- Some KitchenAid mixers are even more notable than others. Chef and thrift store enthusiast Matt Degen found such an example, explains why, and shows you what to look for.

What a great find. I would have thought that someone at Goodwill would know this is worth much more than $30. You are so lucky!
Thanks. Funny story: Believe it or not, I passed on it at first and did another lap of the store. Then it was like, “That’s a Hobart for 30 bucks! Get it!” It’s a wonder it wasn’t snapped up by someone else in that time.
@@IWantToCook What? You passed it up at first? Wow, just wow! haha!
TorBoy9 - No shade on the workers there...but they routinely price trash as if it was treasure...and treasure as...you catch the drift! It takes a lot of life experience with a broad range of manufactured items to develop a sense of their current value. Most workers there don't have a clue, which is why those of us who do can often find wonderful values.
Not where I am at Naples, Florida. I stopped going to thrift stores, goodwill, Salvation Army, and all because they price their stuff so high you better off buying new or eBay or direct.
I was blessed with a 24-year-old workhorse today! I requested on Freecycle, which took months, but eventually, someone replied! 😊🙏🏻✨️
Epic!! May it enable and inspire some glorious recipes 🙌
Great find. I use a 60’s Hamilton Beach Scovill stand mixer in my kitchen.
Another great machine. Thanks for watching and happy cooking 🙏
Wow what a great find! I need to to visit my thrift store more often!
Thanks and happy thrifting! 🙏
Thrift stores are great but most of the time it’s nothing really interesting.
Great find Matt, thanks for sharing. It's come up nearly new looking. Look forward to more content. 🙋♂
Thank you!!
My 1968 KitchenAid. mixer is still going strong. It goes to the Hobart shop yearly to have the head cleaned and repacked with lubricant. I saw an article that said an early 2000 KitchenAid was worth around $1000, but haven't been able to verify that.
Fantastic! Way to keep it going. 🙌
I bought a Hobart kitchen aide in the early 80’s. I have used it several times a week for 30+ years! It’s still going strong!
That’s fantastic! Happy cooking 😀
Thats a great find! I hope you did a re-grease job on it as that old grease in there isn't lubricating as it should and can harm the gears...
Good to know! I’ll search for a how-to video, well, on UA-cam! 😀
It looks fabulous. I am extremely envious. I always knead bread in any new device as I think that's a good standard to use. Bon chance.
Glad you found that mixer! Always cool to find good stuff that lasts forever. I still have the freezer my parents bought in the 60s. Never had to have it serviced.
Had no idea about Hobart, so I'll look into it for future reference. Right now I have a $54 standmixer/blender combo. Besides the price it saves a bit of space which is a major premium in my tiny kitchen that is badly designed but can't do anything about. Still my cheapo off brand Chinese thing is pretty cool and allows me to keep on baking with arthritic hands.
My sister was a baker at a local cafe and bakery, and she gave me a KitchenAid stand mixer she wasn't using anymore for Christmas. Obviously, you can't beat free, but you've got quite a find there!
Love the history of the mixer !
Thank you!
That's awesome! Congrats bro!
Thanks!
Great find! How about trying a simple, easy bread recipe in the mixer?
Great suggestion! Thanks :)
Amazing thift find!! I would like to see either freshly made noodles or italian meringue.
Fantastic!!!
Kitchenaid k5ss were made between 1978 and 1986. Before that there was the k5a which were made from.1936 to 1977.
The k5ss means it is solid state speed control. It is universally considered the best kitchenaid ever.
Wow! Thank you for the info. This makes this score even more special.
Thank you for that tidbit of info! I just found a lift bowl KA5SS, marked only *"Heavy Duty,"* instead of "Classic" or "Artesian" and have been combing the internet looking for information on it. Your comment is much appreciated!
Btw, I found this 5 qt lift bowl KA5SS with all the attachments at a local thrift store just a few days ago for an out the door price of $75, goop and grime at no additional cost 🤣 and scooped it up instantly! Immediately scrubbed it up when I got home and it looks and sound like new!!! I'll regrease it and replace the gaskets before I use it but, for now, it graces my kitchen counter as it's sisters, three lift head mixers in pale yellow, pale green and white, look on in envy! Thrifting is definitely the way to go. The prices I've paid for them were from $95, $60, an amazing $12 and this lift bowl KA for $75.
Who needs groceries when you can buy a KA instead? 🤣
amazing find! i've gotten lucky finds in every category except the cookware at my local thrift stores. ross, tjmaxx, marshalls and homegoods are where i've found some great clearance items on cookware.
Thank you! It’s fun to go in never knowing what you’ll find. Cheers!
Just watched a third video, I'm liking the content, already sub"d!
FYI
You mentioned mashed potatoes on your new mixer (I love my pro HD). At Halloween, I boiled carrots with my potatoes. Orange mashed potatoes! (I know, sneaky way to get picky eaters to eat carrots!)
Thank you! And I love the idea of those spooky mashed potatoes. I’ll give that a whirl 😀
I was gifted a broken kitchenaid mixer as the owner had already replaced it with a new one, yearly if you use it alot they need fresh grease in the gear box, in this ones case it needed new gears but it was fixed for 30$, the biggest difference those older kitchenaids are analog, the newer whirlpools use a digital speed controller, the vintage ones are still full serviceable
Great to know! Thank you 🙏
@@IWantToCook Definitely keep this one and repair when necessary. I have a Whirlpool made KA Pro 600 that works great but is noisy. In my opinion, the Hobart made KitchenAid stand mixers were built with better quality.
You will love this! I always wanted a KA mixer for occasional use, but didn't want to pay the high price. I went to a local church bazaar about 10 yrs ago that sold many used items. A table for appliances had a covered (why? don't know) tall item that I thought was a blender I didn't need a blender but was nosy. As I lifted the cover, lo & behold, the same Hobart mixer as in your video! K5ss. Cream color. Perfect condition with the bowl & 3 standard beaters. Asking price was $10!!!!! Wow I snatched that heavy item up fast along w/the quilted cover. If the cover hadn't been on it, it would surely have been bought by the many dealers that raid the bazaars now to resell for profit.
Fantastic! I think it was covered because it was waiting for you. So glad to hear you are giving it the love it deserves. Happy cooking 🙏
Pizza dough
Also thanks so much for the All clad video. A few weeks later I found 2 saute pans and a med sized pan for 13.00 .. all-clad ...at my local Goodwill outlet..they weigh the items you find ..I was so excited 😊
Wow! Incredible scores! Thanks for watching and happy cooking 🙏
In fact, your vintage kitchenaid is better than modern ones, as I understand it. Hobart manufactured them with metal gears. Whirlpool uses plastic gears now, so the new ones don't have the same legendary reliability. The newest modern ones also have electronic speed controls, not the old style mechanical ones.
Good to know! Thank you 🙏
I love thrift store shopping. Unfortunately I had to pay full price for my Kitchen Aide. It is the big one that says Professional, and it was back when all you could get was grey from Costco. It is pretty much as good as new but 20 or 25 years old. I bought it way back when I needed to make icing for a wedding cake, and it easily whipped up the 11 cups of icing sugar. A wonderful machine. May yours serve you well.
Kitchen aid sells refurbished stuff on eBay from time to time. I just bought a 5 Quart artisan model for more than half price off directly from Kitchen aid
You are such a bargain maven and so are we! Good find this time. So tempting when you see a high end $$ item for almost nothing! But it's addictive, and we are running out of counter space 😄! (Almost).
Lol, so true, right? I've had to make a few "rules" for myself, and either re-donate or sell some wares to make room for new ones. Thanks for watching and happy thrifting!
Yo' very lucky. My big dream would be to get a comercial kitchenaid version. Congratulations. Enjoy it. Hugs. Javier
Chef Matt, congratulation !!! Your this KitchenAid is a beauty !!! Can you demonstrate making German sausages with it - the different fillings, not how you stuff the casing ? Thanks !
What a great suggestion! The half-German side of me is especially excited for it. Thanks! :-)
a Sour dough loft would be nice and what a find Hobart still make stand mixer like that one but for commercial baker only.
Congratulations! The Hobart KitchenAid Mixers are definitely better than the Whirlpool ones. I have a KA KSM5 that I got in 1989, made my Whirlpool. Hobart sold the KA line in 1986, but they were still using the Hobart specs during the time my mixer was made. It runs like a tank and I love it. I think you will get many years of satisfaction from your mixer. I notice the whip has had some wires bent, so please be careful to use it only for cream, eggs, egg whites, etc. Sometimes people try to make cheesecakes with the whips, which can bend the wires. I recently got a great deal on a Kenwood Chef Titanium mixer, which included the blender and the food processor (a real food processor, not just a grinder attachment), for only $45 USD. It is 5 years old and the mixer had been used less than 10 times. So, good luck with your "new" KA. Speaking of cheesecake, maybe you'd like to make one with this? Thanks for showing us this.
Thanks for watching and the great suggestion, along with your knowledge. Cheesecake sounds great. I’ve found myself using it more than I thought I would already, mixing up batters, eggs, etc. It’s so handy and looks great on the counter. Cheers!
@@IWantToCook You're very welcome. Your K5 mixer has a much nicer motor sound than the whining of the Pro 600s . Plus, those older machines were built very solidly. Many people wish they could get their hands on a Hobart KA mixer, so you've done very well, especially for only $30! It looks great, too, and you've done a great clean-up job. One never knows what can be found at thrift shops. I got a Lagostina 8" chef's knife for $3 that I like just as much as my $100 Wusthof knife. And a $350 Staub cast iron pumpkin-shaped pot for $15, with the stickers still on it, never used. I've subscribed to your channel, so I hope to see the KA in action. Thanks again.
I found a KitchenAid Hobart K45ss today at my local goodwill for $27!!!🎉🎉🎉
Whoa!! Score!! 🙌🙌
I would like to see you make homemade white bread with yeast in your kitchen aid mixer.
Great suggestion! Thanks 🙏
I think my grandma bought her KitchenAid mixer in the 80's, maybe earlier, I wonder if it said Hobart.
There’s a good chance it is!
Thrifting For The Win!
I wonder if it has an original motor. Neat find.
Wouldn't be surprised if it did. These things were built so well. Cheers!
Oooh!
JEALOUS
Cool! As for inaugural usage, how about anything that involves whipping up egg whites? Do you know about Castella cakes? Portuguese but the Japanese claim it as their own. Anyway, it is a light, delectable treat that pairs nicely with coffee or tea. Basically Portuguese sponge cake.
Thanks for the suggestion -- that is a new one to me, and from a quick Google search they look delicious. That's one of the wonderful things about cooking and recipes: There is always something new to discover, cook, and try. Cheers!
Was this for the whole machine including the bowl, whisk and dough hook? Or just the motor body?
If you got an original for the whole set, your chef angels looked out for for you!
This included the mixer, bowl, whisk, and paddle. Only thing missing was a dough hook.
@@IWantToCookGo with the 5qt. Spiral dough hook. It works much better than the one that originally came with your K5-A mixer.
For creaming sugar, and butter, together smoothly I recommend the 5qt. Metal Beater Blade by New Metro. It really cleans the sides of the bowl, and mixes your ingredients well.
Alright Matt, how many days a week do you find yourself at a thrift shop exploring? You seem to find all the good stuff and just wondering if you work part time in the thrift shop to find these deals. Ha.
Lol, believe it or not I’ve really scaled back. Nowadays I’m lucky if I hit a thrift twice in a month. I think the key is, I know what to look for. For example, I can scan a rack of pans and know what kind they are by their handle. I also intentionally shop at thrifts in wealthier areas with lots of inventory turnover. But beyond that, it’s often just luck. And that’s what makes it fun.
@@IWantToCookExactly! Hit more affluent neighborhood thrift stores and get familiar with telltale signs, like handles! Also, know what days their sales are on and hit the store the day BEFORE because a lot of people will put off their shopping till the actual sale day!
Another hint is to scan the store from one direction then double back from the other direction. When shopping, a different perspective sometimes alerts you to items you may have missed eyeballing on the first run.
And finally, always bring CASH! At times, the internet goes down and bank cards can't be used! You don't want to miss out on an incredible find just because you have to run to a bank for money!
Happy thrifting!!! 😁
Score!!!
What about dough hook? I can see whisk and cake whisk only
No dice on the dough hook, but I’m hoping another one - new or used - for 5-quart KitchenAid will work on this.
Thrift Store's are the best Eyes open.. !
Absolutely! They can be a real treasure hunt :)
Please make fresh flour from corn, then make corn bread from that
Great suggestion!
Great machine I bough a refurbished k5a after returning the underpowered, over priced, cheap professional 6! That machine will last you forever! Just regrease the gear box over time that grease will dry up! I think they should be serviced every 10 to 20 years! After serving the next thing your going to want to do is decide who your going to leave it to in your will! 😂😂😂
Ha! Fantastic. This thing is such a joy to use. Thanks for watching, and happy cooking :-)
In reality, the gears *should be cleaned and regreased EVERY YEAR!* The gaskets can be wiped off and reused if not soggy, BUT, the *"FOOD GRADE GREASE"* needs to be changed *annually.* If you notice a greasy goop sliming from the silver band that runs horizontally around the machine, check it's color. Over time, the grease changes from a bright white, to yellow, to amber and when completely overused, to a black, dried out mess.
For $11 for a small container of *"FOOD GRADE GREASE"* and a few minutes of tedious cleaning and washing of the gears, you can make your KA Mixer last forever! Skimping on the maintainance will lessen the efficiency, work the machine harder, wear down those $25 (each) internal gears, and lessen the lifetime.
Don't let maintenance intimidate you. It's very simple to do! Many YT videos are available to walk you through the simple, but very important process!
Totally agree that the Pro 600 is underpowered. Just mixing and kneading 2 loaves of plain white bread dough for 8 to 10 mins makes my machine get very warm. So disappointing for such an expensive mixer. Although I do love it and have to admit I've made many loaves of bread, pizza dough, cookie dough, etc with it and it hasn't given up on my yet.......overheated and shut off a time or two but it's still kicking
Carrot Cake?
Yum! My mouth is watering just thinking about that. Thanks 🙏
You really need to take it apart and service it. Needs new grease and oils. Lots of videos on UA-cam
I’m sick over the “new” kitchen aid mixer … hate it ….low power….
Too wide bowls where food blows out top and sides … I did I say HATE it…
Thankfully I’m sending my original to be repaired ASAP…
I hope it gets mended and serves you many more years of happy cooking! 🙏
