👆 Relic or Brand New, what do you prefer?
Non relic. I'll relic it for the next 10 years !
Im with ya.
Its not the same though. Modern finishes dont wear like they used to
@@tylersdso you want fake wear?
@RichardYu-rj3yl No, I'm just saying I see why people get it. Personally, if I were to get a custom shop, I'd like it to have a thin coat of nitro so I could do it myself.
I prefer throwing my guitar around 😂
Relic guitars should be made naturally. Years of enjoyment is the best way.
To each their own.
Most guitars made today aren't made with nitro, so they will never relic, no matter how rough you are on them.
It's like cheating.
Making people think you put those marks there.
I used to hate the relic, but now I see it as a work of art.
How can you see it as a work of art when every relic is the exact they have the scratches in the where all in the same places on every guitar from fender
@johnkennedy3531 that's not even close to true. Sure some a lot of relics have wear in the same place because they try to emulate natural wear, but they're by no means the same
I don't own relic'd guitars but I get annoyed at all those folks whining about them, to each their own, end of story.
The irritating thing is it adds a new element of uncertainty if you are purchasing second hand. A genuine relicing is very sought after but being able to spot a fake adds another level of pain for a buyer. How do you know the seller is being genuine and hasn't just faked it?
@@exp-eri-mental Just look at what case the guitar comes in and the documentation/case candy that comes with it. Ask some questions and you’ll soon get good/bad vibes for your potential interest. 👍
@@djt6546 good advice!
@@exp-eri-mental well if u play it that’s a starting point
@@SamHollidayV how will that tell you if the relicing is fake or not?
Like them both, but can’t bring myself to pay for something that looks beat up.
I just want a readonably priced guitar that feels good and plays good.
Don't buy a Fender then !
This is the real answer
@@digitalchris6681Squier are quite close to fender quality and the don't cost double
RG550
This is the golden age of well made quality instruments that are affordable.
I prefer old beat up guitars but relics are ok as long as it’s done decently. Honestly relics have been around long enough I just look at it as a finish option like an alternate color. They’re is definitely something to be said about not having all the anxiety around putting the first ding in a pristine condition guitar. To each their own don’t yuck someone else’s yumm!
I don’t mind wear and tear, as long as it’s real...
And 80% of the guitar buying public doesn't agree. So that's settled.
@@sillysausage4549but 87.56% of statistics are made up on the spot… WHO DO WE TRUST?!?!?
Exactly this. I bought an 80s HM squier strat and it had been played by the previous owner a lot. It's got some great light natural relicing and just looks so genuine and real. Im confident it is genuine but I'd be so upset if it was fake.
@@sillysausage4549 I highly doubt that 80% of guitar players are playing relics... 😂 More like 30%
Yeah no kidding, until you realize they are all vintage instruments and cost as much as a nice car.
With a pristine guitar I always end up babying it and playing it less often but with my relics, I beat them up and never have to worry about the resale value tanking because I added a few dings and scratches.
This is my perspective on the $250-$500 guitar range ..we are in a fantastic time of very high quality guitar manufacturing at low prices that are accessible customizeable and can be really outstanding instruments that you can naturally relic by playing the hell out of it with out worrying about every ding and scratch that comes along the way ...I'm precious about the PRS's. And my American FSR strat ....I play the f out of The MIM starts Fireflys, IYV's, Mitchell's, Harleys and Earts...
I like a nice relic guitar. I don’t like buying a used instrument because you never know the problems or what people have done to them. Plus I feel it’s a piece of art makes me play it more. Having said that when I buy a new guitar I try to keep it absolutely pristine.
I love a nice relic, they look and feel awesome.
Since most manufacturers have changed their nitro formula over the last 20 years to be far more wear resistant (adding plastics essentially) I firmly believe a modern fender American nitro strat or gibson les paul standard will never wear in the same way as an old one. That itself brings validity to relics. Manufacturers are missing out on a market of people who would buy a guitar with a thin finish that would encourage natural wear
Real nitro doesn’t take long to age, it’s gonna have a few cracks and chips even before you get out of the store… that’s why they stopped using it in the 60s. You can buy a real nitro Master Built or Murphy Lab, of course you’re paying a pretty penny for a guitar if all you want is something that starts wearing instantly…
I love relic guitars
Both.
Depends on which guitar, and its purpose.
Light relic! I don't like a destroyed guitar, but the feel of a used one is great
I can go either way. I love the look of both.
If it’s new, I want it shinny right out of the box! Hopefully I’ll play it enough that it becomes a relic!😊
Both - i have multiple guitars because i like more than one thing.
This one or the other debate is tiresome
I always thought relics were silly, until I held a few genuine amazing vintage guitars that I can no way afford… If you want one to naturally look that way your sill in the custom shop master built range because the new ones with poly will never age even in 3 lifetimes you and wearing through that stuff… I HAVE LOVE FOR THEM ALL!
I like my guitars to be fresh and new out of the box, through usage, and love they’ll reach the look of a relic from my playing style and habits. Then when the instruments are passed to my children they’ll have a reminder of their father when I’m no longer around.
"When your young, if you don't love brand new you have no heart. If you don't love relic when your old, you have no brain." Churchill's Ghost.
Both are amazing hard. To choose
I greatly prefer the look of new guitars over inauthentic relicing. However, the feel of the Fender Relics is fantastic! I had a relic'd Jaguar that was one of the best feeling new guitars I've ever played.
Relic fan here. Why? Because there is no way I am ever going to play a single guitar hard enough and long enough to get that appearance. I’m a church musician who doesn’t slam my guitar around in dive bars or other live shows. The rock hard poly on most modern guitars also won’t relic like old nitro. It’s pointless to say, “jUsT lEt iT wEaR nAtUraLly” like this is 1960 and finishes were extremely thin nitro. It’s simply not possible. The only guitars with the natural “heavy relic” were ride or die solo guitars that were hammered on night after night. No one playing in church has ever “naturally” removed a guitar 😂 but that’s just my context.
Journeyman is the sweet spot for me. No deep wood damage but a beautiful subtle wear.
I think vintage Les Paul's look better than the vintage Strats imo,
I like both. But i love the 100% percent stress free playing of my relic guitar no worries about the accidental scuff, scratch, dings or ... uuh "dongs" as you put it 😂
i like both :)
I want a guitar that has been reliced by natural wear and tear… not because someone wants to create the illusion that they have put in more work than they have.
I don't like glossy necks so I tend to lightly relic the neck of most guitars with fine sandpaper to create more of a satin finish. On a heavy relic guitar the deliberate rusting of the hardware always worries me - surely that must affect the performance of the tuners, bridge etc. I reckon if I bought a relic I'd go for road worn rather than full relic.
I don't like the relic'ing of the Rory Gallagher Strat, but I love the specs on it for that price. It's something I would put up with to get those specs.
I never really understood the idea of buying a new guitar and paying extra to have it beat up (even cosmetically), I don’t mind if I get dings in them from playing them.
If you want a used guitar that’s scuffed, that’s different than relic’d new guitar . But some people love it, so that’s fine by me.
The neck of a relic is the nicest part. I also like that there’s no worries about scratching a relic. That said, I like both.
Ive got a early 70,s strat owned from basicly new ,its beat every scar a story ,dont play it much lately im on a les paul kick these days but that old strat is family
There’s a place for both 🎸🎸💯👌👌😎
The older I get the more I like a perfect condition well playing guitar.
If relic guitars didn’t sell they wouldn’t keep making them. That being said I feel the fender custom shop over relics them … I’ve had a white strat with a maple neck for 20 years, gigged and played a lot, only now are the dot inlays wearing out and some minor belt scratches… but anyways buy what you like !
I wouldn't buy a high-dollar relic'ed re-issue guitar. I like that NOS kinda thing for those and I'll relic them on my own. But I don't mind buying a used guitar with some wear on it if it is still in good shape.
All that being typed, I don't hate on anyone: it's your money and time! 🎸
I like both...if I like the guitar, I like the guitar.
I hated relic guitars until I found myself buying a really nice one. Hate comes from lack of knowledge, most of the time.
I would love guitars to have a more fragile finish so that u could buy a new one and wouldnt have to wait 30 years to get it to have character. Thats why i love maple necks. They love the gunk.
I’ve got an ESP JH signature back in 2013. It’s been in a hardcase all its life and is just now starting to check the paint slightly. Compare that to my Pro Jackson Dinky limited run black n white crackle 2014. It looks like the day I bought it. They have been kept next to each other for 10yrs now. And both played the same amount.
I prefer acoustic guitars but I always try to keep my guitars pristine. I am not opposed to a relic, as I am getting older.
I mean, when the wear is natural I tend really to really like it
I have both. On my Fenders, i prefer them lightly reliced. Gibson and PRS like them untouched.
There is nothing quite like putting the first smash in a brand new guitar. It's almost as good as having someone open a door into your new car.
💯 EVERY ding, dent & scratch
is a memory.🤘🥳
With five older brothers I grew up wearing “relic-ed” blue jeans. I never understood why folks paid money for jeans like that in a store off the rack. NOW they are in style, sure!
I love relics simply I don’t give a shit if I hit them on something or scratch them. Only I love the wood in my hand not plastic tacky
I like mine to look and feel road worn. New poly finishes are indestructible, so buying with a worn it feel makes sense to me with poly. Nitro is a different story, let it break in over time naturally :)
I agree. Let’s be nice. Respect each other’s preferences even though we may not like them for ourselves. I have a relic tele I’m selling but I like the guitar. Just found one I like a bit better that isn’t relic. But the relic had nothing to do with it
People who don’t like them mustn’t own one or played one much. Once you go aged you don’t go back lol
I’d like for my guitars to relic over time as I play them
If it's a pro ii, I will take it no matter the state. I won't pay double the price for the relic though.
I'll take Both for Freehundred, Alex.
Non reliced for me. Why not look like you care about your instrument? 🤗🤗
Imo if a relic is done for a replica, or tastefully (very light, barely noticeable), then it’s okay.
But there’s something amazing about a guitar worn in by you
Both, but its kind of insane to pay for someone to "trash" a new guitar, if it was the same price I would take the one that feels the best.
Honestly, I wore ripped jeans as a teenager so I’m a fan of the relic guitars 😂
Relic ❤❤❤
I like relic, but I prefer to get it the natural way.
The spec of the non relic but with a few dents would be nice.
Ii relic my own guitars over the years it tells the story about me not the factory that relic them.
I don't mind if a guitar looks beat up because it was a done overtime. Character is earned not created with a piece of sandpaper and a scraper
I just want a dull, matte finish look!
I like both. Depends on the guitar. How it plays and sounds is more important to me.
Oh dear. Proper can of worms you’ve just opened! 😂❤
I have nothing against relic guitars, but I would prefer a non-relic guitar. If there was one thing that I would want as reliced, it would be the neck.
I relic my guitars myself thank you 😎
Relic!!! Im a regular dude who plays in the house I will never get those “battle scars” anytime soon so if I like how it looks worned down for a fraction of the price of a original guitar from the 50s/60s then why not
I love the look of relic guitars but I want to do the relic myself I don’t wanna buy one already relict
Both even here!
Non relic'd , I'd much rather be the one to wear a guitar in .
I do not like relics, especially more recently when the relics from Fender have been getting more and more extreme and it's frankly utterly ridiculous and not even what most vintage guitar even look like.
Doesn't matter. Any guitar ends up as a heavy relic for me about a month after I started taking it to gigs and practice. 😂
I’ve never understood it. Who would go out and spend extra money on a beat up car? Or a disheveled house?
Guitar builders go to a lot of trouble to make beautiful guitars for some people to then mess them up. Even worse builders will go to even more trouble to mess one up and charge bucket loads more for the messed up object. This phenomena rarely exists elsewhere in modern society.
If the relic was cheaper than the clean one I'd be okay with it.
Relic
Both but don't relic the hardware
i dont have a reliced guitar to use for comparison. thx pete!
Yes. Both. Yes. Please.
Heavy relic strat is my love
I like the neck to be worn in like they do on the custom shops
Not sure why someone would want a “reliced” guitar…..that is something that is earned on the road not bought
I’d love a battered Gibson LP Goldtop but not a Murphy Lab process
Relic all the way! But a true relic; one that is old and has been through life. Not a new guitar that has been relic. Those are the guitars with true character…
I like a good relic. Cheaper guitars tend to be done poorly in my experience. But a high quality relic job done well can be very nice.
Technically, those are both relics - the pickup covers and knobs are yellowed on the "clean" one. 😉
Non relic, not that I don’t like vintage. The guitar in the icon photo is a 1987 American Standard and looks relatively the same today (I swapped out the pickups for Lace Sensor pickups).
I kinda like relic’d guitars because years of constant use don’t wear my instruments down and they still look shiny and only have minor blemishes, no big dings. So there is virtually no way I will ever have a naturally relic’d guitar, so it’s kinda cool to see and play relic’d instruments.
Sand paper and ice picks aren't that expensive.
@sagittated I said "naturally relicd". You can, or at least I can, tell a difference between play wear and beating it up with a hammer. And to me it just seems disingenuous to beat up a perfectly good instrument to relic it, I'd rather have someone spend their day comparing roadworn guitars to come up with some what believable wear patterns than I would buying a new guitar just to drag it down the road so it "looks cool".
Reliced works well if you take it on the road, they’re often nicer to play and you don’t have to be as precious about picking up new dings and scrapes, but a perfectly shiny and sparkly guitar is hard to beat if you like to show off.
When i buy a new guitar, it's got to be new without scratches, dings&dongs. The relic comes by it self, when using and playing the guitar over the years. In my opinion Relic should be a sign of age and live.
Light aging to open it is fine but Jimi sounded alright without it. I find relic to be 😂
Relicee necks? Yes
Relicd bodies? Mehh... depends on how its done
Buying a relic guitar is like buying brand new jeans with holes in them.
Not really. There’s no utility in jeans with holes in them but there is utility in worn in guitars.
I relic my own
If it’s a quality guitar and it plays well I’ll take either!
Light relic
Non relic
Yes. The answer is yes.
Both for me
