  • I try out the amazing Canon 200 f/2 to photograph butterflies, I add a 2x teleconverter making it a 400 f/4 to see what difference it makes. Let me know which images you prefer and which focal length you preferred.
I had a lot of fun making this video and I hope you enjoy it.
    Cheers, Duade

Beautiful shots! Some of my first serious photography was doing butterflies for an exhibit at a local zoo. Just the background there was beautiful, here we're heading into winter with rain and everything gray and dreary. Until we get snow I pretty much hold up inside or we get good clear cold weather and I go out to photograph nesting bald eagles.
Keep up the excellent work. I always look forward to your videos.

After this virus gets under control, if you make it to America in the winter time I'll show you bald eagles by the dozen, snow geese in the 10's of 1000's, hawks and a wide variety of water fowl. In the early summer there are nesting ospreys that in a boat you can within 50 feet of and they almost pose. Not to mention some of the best southern cooking I've ever had the enjoyment of eating.
I'm 63 retired and plan on doing photography until my time comes to an end. Then just in case I'm being buried with a camera and lense.

I do enjoy more of a habitat photo. The one of the butterfly feeding right in front of you I thought it was cropped too hard but I can also see the enjoyment of the subject being large and filling the frame. My biggest struggle is finding the subjects! The other month I found a location that had flowering trees full of scarlet honey-eaters. A couple of weeks later I got a chance to go back and the flowers had all died and there wasn't a single bird to be seen!!! hahaha

Tnx for sharing and taking us along. They are all nice but I like best the flying one mainly because it is rare to capture/see/freeze a butterfly mid air. Some comparison between the 2x v the sole lens would be nice to see the extent to which IQ degraded. It was also interesting to see that narrow DoF which is insufficient to contain a butterfly which is only a few cm in length. I think it has to do with how close you where to them. Did you experience significant AF slow down with the 2x? I think since you mounted the 2x you were only doing stationary butterflies.

    • @Duade
      @Duade  3 роки тому

Thanks Dimitris, the native lens is very fast and a 2x does have a small impact but I was very impressed with the sharpness and quality of the photos. The details were very good. Yes the DOF was narrow due to both the aperture and how close I was, Cheers, Duade 👍

Hi Duade enjoyed your video, prefer some flowers in shot, but liked the 400mm for more detail. What is the closest you can focus with that setup. I use a canon 300mm f4 lens with 1.4 extender to make it 420mm 5.6. The closest i can focus is 1.4 metres. Get great shots although guilty of tighter shots with less background. Use a cropped sensor 7dii as well.

    • @Duade

Chris, thanks for the comment, the front lighting is purely a preference, I find with backlight or sidelight it can get dark heavy shadows on the bird and I like to make the eyes bright and engaging. I laughed about your comment about taking more environmental type photos with your subjects. I focus about 80 percent of my time chasing owls and I run into the same problem with too many close in shots. My solution was to leave my bigger lenses at home and only take a 200mm F/2.8 with me to force me to take environmental shots. What ever works...

G'day Mark, thanks for your input, there were numerous males as you saw but no females that I could tell. Any reason why that is the case? Are there just less females? Great results from the 200L f2 and 2x converter. Though this set up is way too expensive for me, so I use my ef 70-300L IS USM which works well.
However my friend mind has the ef 100-400L mkii and that is great for this type of shoots. Plus it is a lot cheaper !
Butterflies are difficult to photograph as you really do need a good location to get the clean background.
I have some macro images here

G'day, yes, the 100-400 is amazing as it focuses so close which enables really detailed shots. Beautiful shots, aviation is something I have never tried but would like to one day. Cheers, Duade

    Did you use af tracking?

I think this was on a DSLR so I used AI Servo and expanded focus points from memory. Cheers, Duade
