    Easily the best tutorial on butterfly photography I've found on UA-cam. Well done and thank you.

    I have found that using a monopod can be very useful in certain situations. Again, you can rock back and forth smoothly whilst composing/shooting the butterflies.

    Love the tip of rocking back and forth on manual focus whilst taking a few shots. Definitely going to try that one

    Very interesting. I have given the best of my equipment to my granddaughter who is studying photography. But I do still have my Canon 50D and Canon 300mm F4 lens. So thanks for your video and advice. I should now be able to take better butterfly shots.

    I tend to prefer showing a bit of the habitat, but sometimes that isn't as well received these days. Everyone is using a smart phone, and looking at images on small screens, so I try to make sure I do a pretty even blend between that and close focus shots.

    Paul some good tips. You talked about using a 100mm macro lens OR a 100-400mm with an extension tube. I would like to suggest you use both or a similar combination. I start off with the 100mm at first light when you can get up close and shift to the 100-400mm when the butterflies get real active and you have to keep your distance. Extra weight but more keepers.

      I love that idea - good common sense. Yes, that's a good way of working.

      LOL that’s exactly what I do! I’ve been using my 100-400mm also to practice butterfly flight shots. It’s been winter here in Oz, and last month I was getting up at dawn searching for sleeping cold butterflies covered in dew drops!😍

    My favourite butterfly lens is my Canon EF-S 55-250mm F4-5.6 IS STM. Of course it only works with APS-C cameras (which is all I ever use), but it's very sharp and extremely flexible.

      @skakdosmer 4 роки тому

      My avatar, however, was taken with my Canon EF 50mm F1.8 STM and cropped a bit. But no extension tube was used.

    When a butterfly has reached it body temperature it often closes its wings. To tempt them open again i often use my own shadow across the butterfly to gently cool him down for a minute. You have to do it slowly otherwise the movement will scare him off. This often works for me anyway.

    Thanks Paul good tips as ever not sure if people are as interested in butterflies as birds, but I know a number of nature photographers that do a lot of macro like myself at this time of year. So you would think these videos would be quite popular. Anyway well done for getting it out there!

      @@PaulMiguelPhotography Just put one up on the Marbled White, half my usual views great comments and only thumbs up. Still no real momentum yet I suppose its a long haul on UA-cam! This latest one was near home and it took me ages because I could revisit and it rained and blew a gale for a week in between, actually my longest production yet on my doorstep!

    Absolutely loved your photographs. Great tips that hopefully will help me with my attempt to photograph butterflies. May I ask the LED light, is it stand alone or does it attach to the camera? Would you be kind enough to share a link to the product? Many thanks, now binge watching your videos. 😂

    Paul you forgot say use 1.4 extender if you are I canon user or telconverter for Nikon user turns a 105 macro into a 150 ish macro works great

    • @kristianvrum8979
      @kristianvrum8979 Рік тому

      AFAIK the canon 1.4 extender can only be used with Canon lenses from 135 mm and upwards, unless you put an extension tube of minimum 12 mm between the extender and the lens.

    Hey, I don't know if you will see this, but do you have a recommendation to give about what camera would be good for beginner?

    • @PaulMiguelPhotography
      @PaulMiguelPhotography  2 роки тому

      It is very difficult. I would think about how you will use it yourself, specifically. Are you going to hand-hold, use a tripod etc. Are you likely to crop your images? What is the budget? All those things help to decide.

    Paul.....really enjoying your macro videos. Noticed your hand held panel light to supplement lighting in the field when shooting macros for butterflies. Can you provide me with a manufacturer and the name of a supplier for such a light? I have been looking for one. I would appreciate any information you can provide. Thanks, Jack Keep up the great videos!!

    • @PaulMiguelPhotography
      @PaulMiguelPhotography  4 роки тому

      Hi Jack and thanks for the support. I'm planning to use that in a vlog so I'll try find out which one it is. I got it from ebay - it's a slimline version.. I don't even know the make! The best ones are where you can alter the strength and change the colour temperature. You can get different sizes, you probably need at least 96 bulb.

      If it fades at the back it might be a problem if sun shining from behind. They do do that. You could try hang som material over.
