I'm not sure of the route they would follow to get back onto the Paddington-Reading line, but some of it may not be electrified, so diesel mode could be needed for that.
The connection at Acton is not electrified. I travelled out of Euston on one of these. We were on diesel power until just before Ealing Broadway on the down relief.
I noticed they're using diesel mode instead of electric mode despite Euston station being electrified and the similar Avanti 805s and 807s though

@@adamcutts2174 Part of the diversion route is not electrified. They are probably not cleared to run on electric on the WCML either.

Looking at google maps, I'm guessing they were linking up via Willesden Junction?

The great western mainline isnt closed, paddington is just closed due to engineering works
