Hello Simon! Marie de France was a 12th-century French author of verse literature who worked in England under Henry II. She's the first named female francophone author. Her writing is a fusion of courtly themes and folk legends. Beautiful and very weird.
I haven't even watched the video yet but, Simon, you have no idea how much I've needed one of your videos as today has been a *day*. I'm going to get settled in with a cup of tea and open up my BookDepository wish list (no English bookshops near me, I'm afraid, as I live in Europe) to make it bigger.
Such interesting picks Simon! 3 of my books hauled in May, all Australian, all very different. I picked up some backlists for my shelves one was the poetry collection Millefiori by rap poet, Omar Musa. The second was the, newish NF, Fathoms by Rebecca Giggs,( because I started reading the library copy and was so mind blown by the first chapter, I needed my own copy, yet to get back to it). May Australian Release - Bila Yarrudhanggalangdhuray (River of Dreams) by Anita Heiss, was the third. About the 1852 flood and aftermath from an Indigenous woman's perspective, in a town downriver from me. First novel in Australia with a title in an indigenous language. I knew about the flood and the heroic actions by the indigenous men who saved the settlers of Gundagai during the flood. I've also been through Gundagai numerous times and been stopped by more recent floods there when I was travelling through to visit my Nan as a child. I'm reading it at the moment and it's a good story. Happy Reading. :D
OMG you're going to read Bear! I LOVED that book. I suggested it to my book club and we had quite the conversation. We had a first time member that night and it almost scared her away. There's lots of background info on it if you're interested and want to go down some google rabbit holes.
The Night of the Flood sounds very interesting - having heard about that flood all my life - I grew up near the Lincolnshire coast - I’m really intrigued to read something about it 😊 ooh and the new Sally Rooney 👏
Consolation by Garry Disher is Book#3 in his series. Book#2 Peace was longlisted for this year's CWA Gold Dagger Award. Hell to Pay is book #1. I have yet to read them, but they all sound really good! And actually, The Postscript Murders is #2 in her Harbinder Kaur series after The Stranger Diaries.
Interesting what you said about Woolf, I've read a lot of Woolf and I love her and find her irritating in equal measures!!!! I did like Orlando though and I think you'll like it. I love its exploration of gender as performative. Let me know how you get on. G xx
I really love Nigerian authors also. I wonder if you would ever do a video on your favorite Nigerian authors/ the Nigerian fiction you have on your TBR that you're looking forward to?
Thanks for your review. Lots of ideas for new books to read. Looking forward to your podcast with D.S. later in the year. hope your hay fever goes and you enjoy reading in the sunshine while it lasts.
Ridiculously envious of your proof copy of Matrix. Groff is such a good writer. Big fan of Elly Griffiths crime fiction so I hope you like that one. I like the sound of Pondweed. Also I agree with you that books set just after the World Wars are often particularly interesting. Hope you have a wonderful visit with the great Louise.
Cool remix and City of Liverpool shirt thanks for getting it in frame, as it was intriguing. Interesting books, hope you like Orlando. Mrs. England looks lovely.
Oh dear get well soon Simon! I just need to add all of these to my TBR; so many books so little time 😫 Also I genuinely took a sharp breath in when seeing the new Sally Rooney in your hands, I’m jealous! Cant wait for the release day
Definitely try Will Dean’s standalone novel. It’s a difficult subject, but I thought it was fantastic. I haven’t read any of his Tuva Moodyson books yet, but I’ve got two and Black River #3 will be here this summer. I hadn’t heard of Bad Apples. That will be #4 in the series. I also have Ghosted on the way! Hi to Louise! Enjoy your weekend!
I’m reading One Sky Day, although I’m half way through and still not sure what to make of it! I’m reading a perfect Union also this month and highly recommend the standalone Will Dean one!
The Postscript Murders by Elly Griffiths is the second book in a new series of hers. The Stranger Diaries was the first book and I loved it so I’d start there 🙂 x www.goodreads.com/book/show/40796097

Wonderful book haul. I absolutely loved Diary of a Young Naturalist by Dara Mcanulty. He is quite a promising young and new voice.

I've read the first two Tuva Moodyson books. That book is the 4th one in the Scandinavian Noir.

I’m listening to The Intoxicating Mr Lavelle as part of my June #lgbtqi reading TBR.
Detectives Sneezing and Coughing are back. And no one wants them 😂
Have you read
Swimming in the Dark? I just finished the audio today and loved it .
