I’m gonna become an academic weapon real soon. No one really taught me how to study, and this 40 minute video is exactly what I need to succeed in college right now. I cannot thank you enough for this video. (Jun is literally that guy- He’s an academic weapon, has a girlfriend, a dual degree Dean’s List student and most of all, one of the biggest guys in the gym😮‍💨) .

Yah, same I didn’t even know how to study all through Hs, I pretty much just reviewed class notes and asked for help, I got by but barely, in college I feel the work load increase, I have a lot of dreams, but no way to even attempting to accomplish them without these techniques, I been in “study tube” for abt a yr and only found Jun a couple months ago, revolutionary 🎉Good luck on your journey

"Academic weapon" So you mean just passing the lines that teachers/superiors set for you like literally so many students out there and all it takes is just the willingness to put in the effort

    Summary of vid:
    There's four stages.
    1. Priming --> Understanding the big concepts within the subject before the class is starting on a new topic, how everything is connected.
    Steps for priming (13:04):
    - Gather all the material about the topic (slides, textbooks, etc)
    - Skim resources while making a list of key concepts (terms, headings, images, repeated words)
    - Research the unfamiliar key concepts on the list
    - Compare the concepts and create groups based on their similarities and differences.
    - Make those relationships related to you through connecting it to prior knowledge or personal experiences.
    - Draw up a diagram of the concepts divided in their groups.
After understanding the topic, taking a short pre-test (5 min) will deepen your understanding.
    2. In-class notes --> Listen to the teacher, don't focus on writing down every little single thing.
    - Add on groups to the diagram you made (diagram II).
    - Add key observations (points you don't know how to fit into the diagram)
    - Active recall questions to practice with
    3. Post-class immediate review --> 30 minutes before bed
    - Clean up diagrams and questions
    - Go through questions and identify the harder ones
    4. Revision
    - Creating another diagram (diagram III)
Then, study with Active recall. There are different techniques: Blurting, Feyman technique and mock exams. Use spaced repetition and breaks.

00:03 Priming is the first stage of the learning system and involves understanding the big picture of the topic before going into classes.
02:37 Understanding the function and relationship of different pieces in learning
07:40 Chunking information down and organizing it based on relevance
09:51 The priming stage helps analyze how different concepts come together to solve problems.
14:29 Annotation enhances understanding and memory.
16:49 The three parts of in-class notes: annotating, key observations, and active recall questions.
20:36 The guide to academic success covers evidence-based revision techniques, productivity tips, personal advice, and career development tips for students.
22:31 Active recall is key to strengthening memory and understanding
26:38 Personal choice is important for color selection and creating relationships between groups.
28:36 Deliberate effort leads to meaningful learning.
32:21 Practice tests are the best resource to narrow down what to study
34:13 Utilizing active recall and various techniques can help improve learning efficiency.
37:58 The speaker encourages viewers to share their thoughts and questions in the comments.

Among all of the learning system videos out there, this video made it a lot more easier for me to understand and apply to my studies real time!! Like I really like how you provided an example on how to utilize your syllabus. It is direct, simple and very easy to understand. Unlike other videos, it makes me fumble on how to apply it. Now I easily grasp the concept and excited to incorporate it into my daily routine now that a new semester is coming soon. Thanks for the valuable tips Jun!
Hoping to more students find your content and finally learn the learning system that they deserved!

    small recap (for myself):
first: priming (per topic, not class)
    - keywords >> chunk >> diagram
    - short pretest
    second: in-class notes
    - add on diagram 1
    - key observations (don't add on diagram if you don't know where it fits)
    - active recall (questions)
    third: post-class immediate review
    - practice active recall questions
    - identify weaknesses (make habit of reviewing before bed)
    fourth: revision
    - diagram 3 (reorganise and simplify 1+2)
    - blurting 1-3 times with breaks (good start for a.r.)
    - feynman technique (use analogies, etc)
    - (timed) practice tests (correct when done or really stuck and be stricter)
also, jun thank you so much for making this video!! i already knew about all of these methods, but no youtuber really explained how and when to use different methods. testweek (in the netherlands, year 11) is coming up and i'm going to start today, thank you so much ^^

  • @anangelsdiaries
    @anangelsdiaries 5 місяців тому +1

In the thing that I did accidentally as I went along (or sometimes purposefully but then stopped), priming is probably the most overpowered thing you can do. And it really doesn't have to be complicated, literally just reading the lecture notes in the bus as you're commuting, or the night before and taking notes of the questions you had as you read is already pretty good.
While I don't take notes, I will try to implement the jotting questions for review thing because that sounds like a great idea. Even without taking notes, just asking lots of questions and interacting with the material as its being taught makes it so I don't feel like I have ever felt bad for not taking notes (eg: trying to guess what the teacher will say, ask yourself why things are done this way instead of that way, see connections with past things you've already learned).
Amazing video, there's a lot here that I will steal for next semester, hopefully I can reduce my study time.

Hi Jun. I'm not a student but still watching this video, my line of work requires continuous learning. But recently I have a hard time learning, and brain fog.
I realized we have similar methods in learning when I was in college, except I didn't do efficient notes.
I didn't do the massive connection thing. I do it on small scale when I need to memorize topics.
I reflect what I learned for the day everyday, so I don't cram the night before an exam.
Mind you this method works! I did well back in school. And yours is definitely an upgrade.

Thank you Jun, my first year in undergrad at Stanford was really difficult because I didn't have much structure or clue about how to tackle so much information being thrown at me at once and how to properly synthesize and apply this information. This quarter I've done much better using your techniques and am really confident going to final exams.

Wow this video left me with motivation and a realy good feeling. You just have such a motivating and structured way of explaining things. Everything makes sense and feels dooable.. just a day later I started with the technics and i am impressed! I'm behind in class due to a chronic illness and an surgery, but following these steps make me feel like I understand everything faster. Espacially the Priming Step turned out to be the best thing ever..I feel like I have an overview..an idea of where I'm heading and why and which things are more important than others. Can't thank you enough☺️ I will definitly follow you for more of this content!

Thank you so much June! I know you said you will so please please please do a video on how to actually prime and build your diagrams with a university course extent content. I find I am having trouble just figuring out how to even approach the vast information taught to us in so little time (60 slides per lecture, 2 lectures a week, 6 sets of slides for 3 weeks) so if I am priming for 3 weeks ahead I don't even know how to condense all that into a single diagram:( I'd be extremely helpful from all of us watching to see a practical example from someone who is also in the sciences and takes heavy load courses :) Thank you and keep killing it!

I think this video has already helped me a lot and i think a video about each step breaking down each of these steps would be great. Maybe another video about how you apply this to your own studies. I get the fashion example but i think different examples may help more.

I need to be more patient. Should have waited 2 days more for the discount ^^ Thanks Jun Yuh for creating your book and putting so many vids out. Your video comes at the right time as I needed more information to grasp more of your info in the book. I am still at chapter "Active recall" and as it turns out it is really difficult for me to strafe away from the details and focus on the big picture/concept. I am used to write everything down and basically just copying the lecture/book. However, I have begun to ask more questions and using the colour codes. Thanks again

Hi Jun, thank you sooo much for your video, your tips are amazing❤
I'm starting to try out your tips, although it's a bit difficult (I've been the type of student who tries to write everything down for years, so it's hard to change overnight).
Anyway, thanks again for this precious gem, you might have saved me countless hours in the long run 😊
Update: ok, I think I have a question for fellow college students out there.
Most of my professors give lectures without necessarily referring to a book, they might recommend 3 or 4 titles and then it's up to you to find the information you've got to learn... so my question is: if during the lecture you're not writing down what the professor says, how can you make sure you still access the information you forget which might not be on the book?
I've thought about recording classes, but having to listen back to a 3-hours recording to find the 10-seconds bit of information you were looking for is definitely not a way to optimize your study time... I know there are speech-to-text apps out there, but they are either expensive, or they don't work very well, especially with technical terms, so that would still require plenty of time...
Anyone else having the same problem here? What would you suggest?
Update: I've started taking notes for one of my subjects by organizing them in a table. There are two columns, one for questions and one for answers. As the lecture goes on, I write the explanation dividing it in rowz and add questions, and if they're incomplete I review my notes after class, so at the end I have both active recall questions ready to be answered and easy-to-access answers.
(I know most of you probably don't care, but I hope this comment can help someone)
    P. S. If you had the patience to read this far, you're a legend❤
