- How hard do young rugby players train in England? This week on episode 3 of ‘The Academy’ the boys take on the might of the unbeaten Sale Sharks.
Leicester Tigers are steeped in the history of Rugby. Winning three Premiership titles and back to back European titles in the early 2000s, the club is a giant of the game. Over the last two decades they have produced some of the best rugby players on the planet and their identity is the embodiment of the English rugby ethos: hard-nosed, fast-paced and at times ruthlessly brutal.
The club have a strong tradition of producing home-grown players. Tigers legends Martin Johnson and Graham Rowntree were developed from a strong youth structure and Tigers recognised very early that an Academy system was needed to develop players capable of playing professional rugby. In 1998 the Tigers Academy was established with players such as Harry Ellis, Sam Vesty and Louis Deacon among the first to successfully come through the system. In 2002, Tigers were rewarded for their pioneering work with RFU Academy status.
The programme has produced more than 100 age-grade internationals as well as producing British & Irish Lions caps Tom Croft, Dan Cole, Harry Ellis, Ollie Smith, Manu Tuilagi, and Ben and Tom Youngs. RugbyPass goes behind the scenes of the programme to see what it takes to become a Leicester Tiger; going on a journey with Academy hopefuls over the course of their championship. Love the approach the coaches have on those boys, The boys are well coached! The communication is on point and the manner how they talking to those boys. Coaches are calm and you can see the effect it has on the boys. Well done boys and even better coaches. Some of those boys will be in the senior team in the new future!
The training and mindset is as brutal as I would expect from English rugby.
Can’t wait to play these guys next season 😋

Just checked - 25% of first team squad are ex-Academy. In Leinster 80% of ist team squad are ex-Academy. Many of the current Academy have already played Pro14 and a couple have played Heinekin.

Call me dumb but why do they have letters and not numbers?
It said in one of the previous episodes it's because that's what they used to have before the RFU enforced numbers and then they stuck with the tradition of letters for the academy

This may have been asked before and many apologies if it has been answered but what has made Leicester stick with Alphabetical numbering? Its quite confusing for both spectators and officials.

@@IestynSymonds69 I was referring to the 1st team. They and Bristol used to use letters and confusingly Tigers lettered from loose head prop, Bristol Full Back. The league introduced compulsory numbering, not because of tigers and Bristol, but because Quins started using squad numbers. They've used it as a marketing strategy ever since. The ABC club!!!

How many of te current squad are ex-academy? How many in the current 1st 15?
20 in the first team squad, and out of those Cole, Ford, Calum Green, Tuilagi and Youngs x2 are first 15 players
No youngsters in those 6 - doesn't say much for the pipeline, which is surely the earmark of a successful academy

Can someone explain the letters on the back of the jersey? Obviously is their name? But why?
No not their names. Old Leicester traction they had letters instead of numbers so 1 is A 2 is B etc. Leicester used to do it but it got stopped in the early 2000’s I think because they wanted to standardise things. Bath use to never have a 13 shirt because it was unlucky.
