    This is just my subjective opinion: I have road-tested both sets of monitors mixing down the same five tracks on each. The iLouds are very very good. My jaw hit the ground when I heard them for the first time and for somebody who wants decent backup/cross-reference monitors or monitors to take on the road for location work or writing an album in a hotel room, they are excellent. However, for me personally as a producer/engineer and mastering engineer, if you have the budget, I would go with the Gene's. They have a much flatter, less flattering response, which is what you need for critical listening. I would happily do 90% of a mixdown on the Gene's and finish off in my studio with my Dynaudio's. For mastering especially, they are very good and nearly as portable as the iLouds. In a perfect world, I would have both haha. Hats off to IK Multimedia though and I look forward to seeing what they do in the coming years considering they are fairly new to the studio monitors market although I have been using their plugins for years.

      Conan Liquid awesome, I did stumble upon a review today though saying that the bass collapses on MTMs especially when used at 40 hz switch. Is it true that there are bass problems with MTM or he’s just an idiot?) obviously due to this corona shutdown i cant go into a store and try those for myself so I’m asking you since you sound like a person who knows what they’re talking about

    Guys.
    Go to the store and test both side to side.
    I have both of them now - they’re not comparable. You will immediately tell the difference and understand why one is more expensive. However ilouds DO go much deeper in the low end & I did a lot of great work on them. Genelecs feel MUCH larger in sound though. MUCH LARGER. Genelecs are trickier to understand though, ilouds great strength is how linear all the frequencies are. On genelecs it took me at least a year to somewhat understand how to eq on them. Overall my advice - have both)

    • @log791
      @log791 Рік тому +2

      Not just that. Everyone who doesn't understand the difference should try both of them with classical music. Instruments on Genelec sound like instruments. (More sound? What a ridiculous title.)

      Once you learn to mix on the Genelecs and you have it under your belt, you now know how to mix. You know what frequencies and levels you want to hear at different parts in the mix. The same could be said of Yamaha NS10s but the Genelecs sound way better IMO. That would probably translate to mixing on these iLoud Micros. Personally as I know the Genelec sound, I bought 8010 for my smaller studio and for traveling and they are great.

  • @DSAUDIOreview
    @DSAUDIOreview  4 роки тому +43

    Plastic iLoud Micro costs 1/4 of the price of full metal Genelec 8020D, but suprisingly sounds bigger, fuller and more pleasing, so if you are looking for small monitors to listen to music than there is no reason to spend 4 times as much for Genelecs. If on the other hand you want precision, control and low distortion than Genelec is better choice for you as long as you have the money.
    What do you think? Which one sounds bettter in your opinion? Let me know in the comments below! Cheers!

    After owning iloud micros for 2 years I just upgraded to Genelec 8020D. I backed to backed them a lot before selling the ilouds and the Genelecs are a big upgrade in transparency, detail, soundstage, bass, volume and seem to fill the room in a way the ilouds couldn't even though they are nearfield.
    The Genelecs are incredible for the size and I use them for mastering/mixing and most of my casual listening now ... The iLouds have been fantastic though and you cannot get better for the price in my experience but if you want accurate studio quality sound in a small package then the Genelecs are the way forward if you can stretch the cash. The Genelecs do need a decent interface though whereas the ilouds will sound good even from MoBo soundcards or USB pen dacs like the DragonFly. I now see the iLoud as very high end multimedia speakers and the Genelecs as professional audio gear. I run the Genelecs from an SSL2+ interface.
    I know the figures might suggest the bass is better on the ilouds but in reality the bass is more defined and clearer on the Genelecs even though the frequency response is apparently not as low. I ended up pairing a subwoofer with the ilouds as I wanted better bass but when I got the Genelecs I sold the subwoofer.
    Don't want this to put anyone off buying the ilouds as the value for money and sound quality is fantastic and I have been really happy with them for a long time.

      I'm extremely close to choosing a pair of the Genelec 8020Ds! With that said, however, your comparison is between the 8020D-iLoud Micro. How do you compare the iLoud MTM with the Genelec 8020D?

    • @karls7226
      @karls7226 3 роки тому +3

      @@TheDarius1968 - Hi Darius, I too had the same dilemma.. I was so impressed with the micros for the price/size, I wanted to stay with IK and get the MTM, especially after hearing the rave reviews. The free calibration tools are also a big bonus!
      However, size is an issue for me, the 8020D are as big as I want on my desk and the 8020D handles loud volumes a lot better without distorting (mine go very loud). I also read a fair bit about the MTMs being more directional so you have to be sat exactly in the sweet spot for them to sound good. With the 8020D I can be anywhere in the room and they still sound amazing (even though they are nearfield!) - This is important for me as I use them for casual listening too and they seem to fill the room.
      I never got a chance to back to back them though, so all I had to go on was online comparisons and reading what the forums say but most people who have compared them, seem to prefer the 8020D. I'm very happy with my 8020Ds for my purposes but I'm not into bass-heavy music and I know the MTM has a lower bass response, so that is something to consider too. There are some good "8020D vs MTM" youtube videos and forum posts online.

    I've had Genelec 8020's for nearly 15 years. They are great for mixing a track properly on. I A/B them to KRK Rokits at the time and I could instantly hear why the Genelecs were twice the price of the KRK monitors.
    If you are just listening to music then you don't need to spend so much on speakers. The iLoud speakers will do a great job. If you need studio monitors then the 8020's can be used to mix a track that will translate well onto other speaker systems. That's IMHO
