IC-9700 for FM & Repeater work in 2024?

I noticed that the 9700 receives weak 2m beacon signals very well even without any S-meter indication. I such cases the spectrum waterfall does however show a weak spectrum line on the waterfall display.

i agree with you, for repeaters only is an overkill, I use this rig for ssb, FT8 and packet either terrestial or satellites.

Does it easily do Crossbend repeat like the Kenwood’s do? And can it do straightforward Packet? If not, I would say forget this thing.

Yes, complete over kill. I use mine for satellite, Ssb, EME and an IF for QO-100 satellite.
What a waste to use it for FM only
