    In this video, we look at how metals react with water and with dilute acids and how we can use this information to order the elements by reactivity. We then explore why some metals are more reactive than other in terms of their ability to form a positive ion.
    This video is based on the AQA spec. If you are following a different exam board then you should check your specification. The Amazon link above is an affiliate link. Great video sir. May i ask if there difference between GCSE and IGCSE topic wise. In my school im taking 7 igcse subjects and so its called ice. Any idea on what ice is?

    • @Freesciencelessons
      @Freesciencelessons  7 років тому +12

      Yes, ICE is simply a name given to a certain combination of IGCSEs. It's designed so that students take a range of different subjects rather than a narrow selection.
      There are differences between GCSE (UK) and IGCSE. The IGCSE has more topics and more depth. However, there is a load of overlap so you should find a lot of my videos very useful.

    Hello Shaun, what does the aqa gcse chemistry spec mean when it says we need to "recall and describe the reactions, if any, of....[the metals]....with water or dilute acids? What do we need to know about these reactions?

    • @Freesciencelessons
      @Freesciencelessons  3 місяці тому

      Firstly, you need to know the products of the reaction (ie with water and also with dilute acids). Then you need to know how quickly the metals react with these.

    • @hecticentertainment
      @hecticentertainment 3 місяці тому

      @@Freesciencelessons Thanks for your reply. When you say 'How quickly', is that just meaning, "Rapidly, quite rapidly, no reaction", as stated at 3:00 or do we need to know more than just this (the part where it says "describe the reactions" in the spec is making me think how much I actually need to know about them...?

    Hi Sir, I just wanted to ask you about effective revision techniques for science because I am in the process of learning your revision cards and have watched the videos when the revision cards haven't made sense and it is a reoccurring theme that I continue to get stuck when I actually try to transfer my knowledge onto the actually exam questions. I usually get around a B and to push my grade up I need a significant boost and a way of getting around exam questions, because it seems I have a pretty good level of understanding with the content, however i get to an exam paper and really struggle transferring my knowledge. Just to note I am taking my exams this summer and would appreciate any help.
    Thank you

    • @Freesciencelessons
      @Freesciencelessons  7 років тому +33

      Ok this is what I think you need to do. You need to leave the revision cards for a while and watch the videos. The revision cards are great for facts but they won't help understanding as much as the videos and it sounds like that's where you're struggling. Watch the videos first, really get your head around a topic and then learn the cards.

    "A student placed a strip of magnesium into a solution of zinc chloride.
    What, if anything, would of observed, and why?"
    Now in the answer part it says that a black solid would form and that magnesium would displace the chlorine from the zinc. I just don't get why a black solid would form when in the videos online it shows a yellow/orange solid formed.

      On page 40 (bottom) of the AQA Chemistry spec, it tells you what you need to know. You should be able to recall how eight metals react with water or dilute acids and place them in order of reactivity. You don't need to learn the entire reactivity series. They might also give you experimental data on how other metals react and ask you to construct a reactivity series.

      Ah right. Well the C1, C2 and C3 labels really apply to the old spec (finishing in 2017). For the 2018 exams, there will be two papers for each subject (paper 1 and paper 2) but they don't relate to the numbers in the 2017 exams. For past papers, personally at this stage I would not be looking for those. AQA have only released a specimen paper and there are no past papers as it's a new exam. I'll be releasing revision workbooks later in 2017 which will help you with lots of questions.

    Sir, are you 100% sure you don’t have to know the reactivity series coz I have my exams coming up in a few days and my chemistry teacher told me that you have to know it.
    ~just for clarification I’m doing Aqa gcse combined science~

      Lithium is below cause reactivity increases down group one as its easier to lose abd electron

      you don't need to learn the reactivity series off by heart, just gain a general idea as to what's at the top and close to the bottom
