Facelift of the E46 and E53 was a crime against humanity with the goofy changes to the headlights. Sure an extra cog in the auto is nice on an E53, but pre facelift looks so much better.

I could agree on e46 side facelift def sucks
But regards to e53 pre and facelift looks good specially in IS body kit

That thing is super clean underneath especially and unmolested. Has none of the suspect and usual oil leaks as almost all of them do. You're on the money there. Really digging your collection of cars, especially all those e38's.

Yeah that’s what ive noticed straight away no common oil leaks etc..
Fingers crossed it will run lol

    I'm convinced that's a headbolt washer

    • @psavel274
      @psavel274 3 роки тому +3

You could be right. Has all the look of a headbolt washer with how thick it is, and the I.D. and O.D. look pretty correct to be one from what I can see on this crappy phone. Maybe possibly a thrust washer from one of the timing gears?? Tough to tell on this phone screen. A quick look at realoem would probably confirm the size of the washer from the specs of it. I would go through the timing diagrams, and long block diagrams to see if there is a size listed. Usually BMW puts a spec in the column similar to size/ length of bolts. They list them so you could source your own without going to the stealership. I bet when all the vanos and timing shit was pulled off they dropped it in there and probably couldn't find it so just said screw it and left it. It may not even be from anything internal in the engine and some dipshit just dropped it in there when the valve covers or timing covers were removed, just from being careless. Could've been doing another job on the car at the same time as the vanos units.

Hello from the States! I just picked up a 03 4.6 a month ago and just did the guides as well as rear subframe bushings, etc etc. I am very familiar with these engines. I hope you have the proper timing tools. Did your car run at all? If it did with that broken guide I bet it was very loud. I would also do a leak down along with your compression. Anxiously waiting for your updates.

Whoever originally did the work on that one half-arsed the job because they couldn't be bothered to go the whole hog and change the big U-shaped guide, or, apparently, the chain. I'll bet the customer got charged for the whole job, though. Unsurprisingly, the work didn't hold. Hopefully it hasn't done serious engine damage...
The 4.6iS is very rare in the UK as, at the time it was available, if you were buying one to use as a company vehicle then you would get taxed to extinction under the benefit-in-kind rules, and the high road tax rates were enough to make even the wealthy people buying vehicles like these to think twice. That, plus the fact that the government was really pushing diesel over petrol at the time means that the vast majority of UK X5s were the diesel, and any petrol version was very much the exception rather than the norm...
It's interesting you say that X5s don't really rust, I've seen a few around my local area that are extremely rusty around their lower areas. OK, they're all higher mileage vehicles and they are, perhaps, a bit more inclined to be used as they were designed to be used around here than in a lot of other areas where they're more Chelsea tractor than farm tractor, but the sills and outer edge of the floor pan can rot out pretty spectacularly...

Pretty car. I love this first model X5. It's like cross country E39 as bigger :) Btw you are right about the differential gear ratio. Though the type on 4.6is is 188k, not the big differential as on facelift diesel has.

Are you worried about the metal flake and shimmer in the oil long term? Or did the oil filter do its job and catch anything that would have caused damage.

My misses wanted an x5 so I just sold our 535d touring m sport an got a very clean x5 4.6 is in black . I test drove it but not far and all seemed ok but iv noticed a clunk from rear I suspected bushes or diff mount it turns out the diff has a lot of slop and as far as I can tell the slop is the clunk do you at all know best and cheapest way to deal with this have you experienced this before . Thanks in advance

@@The777Garage hi yes as far as I can tell . I hold cv flange and rotate the propshaft going in to the rear diff side to side and it has a lot of free play and if do it hard can hear a slap noise from cogs hitting now I'm scared to drive it

Hmm..these diffs are common on 3.0d to go wrong but not really on 4.6is
      They both have 3.91 ratio..
I would drain oil see if its clean..
