  • In this video I will share with you my experience trying many drug store, inexpensive shampoos, conditioners and styling products. Drugstore hair products like Elvive, OGX, 3 Minute Miracle, John Frieda, Nexxus and more~ALL the top selling, highest rated, most popular lines. I was BLOWN AWAY at the difference in made in my hair, after ONE shampoo! I realize these may work for some, but I am afraid many do not realize the damage these products could be doing~(quickly) to your hair, causing breakage and frequent unnecessary trims, and even hair loss! This is also true if you use a high-end product that is not meant for your specific hair type and needs~we will do a deeper dive into that and many other hair health issues 😊 Thank you so much for watching!! 🥰 Lisa

Hi Lisa, as I commented and recommended you take a look at the Blowout Professor’s Chanel in your last 2 hair videos. I’ve learned so much about hair from him. And yes! The Harry Josh blow dryer is his go to.
    1. Use products for your hair TYPE.
    2. Do not use drug store shampoo and conditioner. Use a Professional brand.
    3. Use a Wet Brush to detangle your wet hair.
    4. Always use a leave in conditioner and heat protectant before blow drying your hair. Use a hair oil on your ends and mid-length once you’re done with your blow dry.
Ladies, take a look at his videos. Only hair facts. Other great info on why your hair “isn’t” growing. For us Blondes, skip the purple/blue/violet shampoo (these will dry your hair) and instead opt for a purple/blue/violet hair Mask. Hope this tip helps you 🙌🏼.

As someone whose hair used to never grow passed my shoulders, you’re not lying, Lisa. My hair started growing the moment I switched to all Oribe and Shu Uemura products + bought a Dyson. My experience is if you don’t color your hair, drugstore products will work just fine. The moment you start coloring/bleaching, you gotta listen to the professionals and use the expensive stuff if you value healthy hair. You Lisa, are a professional, thank you for making this video. And if you color/bleach and drugstore products work for you, you’re a unicorn 🦄😂♥️

I absolutely feel your pain! I ruined my hair a year ago by using cheap products. While I thought I was doing a good thing by saving money, it cost me so much more to try to get my hair back into good shape. After one year, it is just now beginning to be healthy, and look good again. Thank you for warning us about the dangers of cheap products. After all, they cost us much more in the long run.

To get healthy hair, you need good nutrition, hair vitamins, no stress, and a great, high quality shampoo and conditioner. Hey Lisa, thank you for this video! As a qualified hairdresser, I can attest to the fact that where haircare is concerned, it is certainly a case in most instances of "You get what you pay for".
Products like 3 Minute miracle for example are loaded with dimethicone and hair/scalp occluding silicone and cheap fillers. They make the hair feel nice initially, but weaken the hair over time, make colouring more difficult and do truly nothing for the hair's health.

@Danette Mannion , I hope you dont mind me jumping in to give you my experience with Nexxus. About 25 years ago my sis won a trip for 2 to vegas she was kind enough to ask to go along, i really needed to get my roots done, I had been bleaching my hair for about 10 years at that time, I ended up going to a very expensive place in the tower i worked in , in Toronto
Well didnt this woman literally burn off about 3 inches of my hair and it was turned to yellowish straw. we were leaving for Vegas the next morning. One of the first things I did after we checked in was go to the conerige and ask for the best salon they knew of, i went to that salon and explained what had happened, they said they would not touch my hair at that point and said to use the nexxus repair products. There was one specific product that the woman showed me in her hands if you rubbed the product between your fingers it kind of developed a string between the two fingers. So, i bought everythings she suggested and even just one shampoo and this treatment i FELT a difference!!
At the end of Lisa's video she touches on something very important which i have only discovered in the last several years. When brands like Nexxus, Redkin, Biolage and a few others that had up until that time only been available at a salon, became available through walmart and drugstores I bought myself some nexxus as i had lived through another hair debocle.
WOW...i bought what i thought were the exact same products i bought several years prior in vegas...they were absolutely not the same, i know as i used every bit of the products i bought in vegas and i saw the immediate difference it made vs this new batch i bought at walmart about 10 years later.
I then found my hair saviour, an amazing stylist who became a good friend, i told her my story about the nexxus and she then explained to me that the "professional" series brands that began to be sold through drugstores etc were NOT the same formulas as the same brand sold in salons. I was like WHAT? I had seen it with my own eyes so I knew something was up but if she had not told me i am not sure I would have even thought of this.
Lastly, Lisa also touches on a great point that basically all beauty products are owned under three or 4 main umbrella companies, and yes there are situations where you might find a drug store product that looks, smells and even preforms like a higher end product and these become the "dupes" we all here so much about...except, when you try those out for yourself...its been my experience that no...they do not perform exactly like the higher end product.
Bottom line is the old saying, typically, you get what you pay for. Now, there are some major price bands between a GOOD salon product and then the BEST on the market. I think there is a good, better and best in the higher end prodcuts and if a budget isnt available for the better or best, than try to go with the good and dont let the teenagers ( or in my case) your toddler use it for very very exoensive bubble bath, lol...totally my fault for leaving it where it was.
If anyone has read this far, well thanks for sticking with me through my Ted Talk :)
ok, i said I was done but i HAVE to add this one thing, I have used a wide variety of salon products for quite a long time everything from Kerastace to Orbie and the whole various line oif Olapex. I live in Canada so many of the awesoe products Lisa talks about I dont end up trying because they dont ship to Canada and/or shkipping is like a month of tuition at school. During the Black Friday sales Colleen Rothchilds ran a really good sale, I finally went ahead and bought the shampoo, daily conditioner and the hair mask.
      WOW, WOW, WOW.
One shampoo, just one and I immediatly felt a differece in my hair.
We also have extremly hard water and we have water filters on all of our showers, but in looking up the filter we use i saw lots of complaints about hair and women (and men) saying that their hair was so so so hard to comb out and tangled even when using the water filter on the shower. Well
this has been a problem for me since we have lived in this house which is coming up on 8 years. I literally despise shampooing my hair because it takes me a solid 15 minutes before the shower to just brush out the tangles, then even tho i was using what I thought were good quality deep comditioners in the shower. ( brands like Briegeio and other Sephora brands). Then I finally got the Collen Rothchilds set. ONE shampoo and the changes were incredible. I could EASILY comb out my hair which is about to my bra strap at its longest lenght>
ok, that really is it. I am a huge CR fan now and hope i never have to be without her products :)

I totally agree with you on drug store hair products! My favorites are virtue hair, oribe, Truss and olaplex. I have the shark hyper air dryer and I agree with you about the ergonomics, but it’s still a good alternative to the dyson if you can’t or don’t want to spend so much on a hair dryer. I’ve gotten used to it and it’s pretty fast so it’s not bad. Plus the shark is only $180 at Costco - I got it on sale there for $150.

I could never get my hair to grow past my shoulders & if it did, the ends always looked so pitiful & thin. I have fine hair, but a lot of it, plus I hair highlighted hair. I’ve been using the Pureology Strength Shampoo & Conditioner for about a year, and let me tell you, it has worked wonders for my hair! My hair is thicker, healthier & down to my waist- and I still bleach my hair! My hair is so much more stronger too. It absolutely does matter what products you use on your hair!

Once you use good products you cant go back, I never could find drugstore products that I ever really liked. I have some good ones that work on my hair and I have to switch around every two washes because using sulfate free all the time makes my hair crunchy and waxy and I will also go in with a sulfate shampoo at least once a week to get the gunk out. I love It's A 10 silk shamp/cond , their serum and miracle leave in potion. Also love Pureology hydrate line, Moroccan oil (brand) hair oil and a product you turned me onto many years ago that I love is the Alterna Caviar cc cream. I have found so many great products from you, cant wait to see what other great ones you find. Need a dupe for Loreal Shining Peach lipstick because its been discontinued. Great video Lisa!!

I have fine hair and I have to be careful with it too. My favorites are Colleen Rothschild,Olaplex, Virtue and Alterna Cavier. I alternate them. I think I’ve heard you say you didn’t like Olaplex but I love it. I’ve tried several Kerastase products and haven’t been that impressed. I guess we all are a little different and have different hair. I love my Dyson which I’ve had at least 5 years. I’ve bought many of the styling products you’ve recommended and like them all. I have been on a mission for about 1 year for a shampoo and conditioner --JOICO I used for years that worked for my hair was discontinued.. have tried tons of high end under the sun and The Pureology hydrate is a winner for the product, but the packaging is a deal breaker to repurchase and the jumbo size is way too expensive even with Ulta sale . ( For one thing if too much product comes out, you cant put it back in the container. ) Just tried one of the most advertised GRO hair systems and first use my hair was a total rats nest and felt horrible. I am now trying Necessaire shampoo and conditioner. So far a winner and not super expensive. Also just binge watched your suggestion, Blowout Professor. Good information.

Recently my daughter bought the Suave shampoo/conditioner with Keratin Infusion. Oh my gosh, it made my hair feel so clean and silky. My hair is no longer frizzy. As for hair growth, I take vitamins called Alive for women 50+. My hair now grows very fast. Great video ☺️. As for high-end, I use Alterna caviar shampoo and conditioner. I got the Colleen Rothchild hair mask after you mentioned it in one of your videos and love it! Want to try her Serum but was fearful it may be more like an oil..... thanks for doing this video for us! You saved us all time, hair trauma and $!

I also switched my hair products to Kevin Murphy rehydrate me and the repair masque. Not drugstore but oh so yummy to use. Love your channel so much Lisa! Thank you for all you do. Thanks for the info Lisa. I use 99.9% salon/high end products on my hair but I occasionally dabble in drugstore products. I’ve heard many professionals talk about how bad they are but never a decent explanation of why. You covered all of that in your video and detailed why those products are not good for your hair. I know that UA-camrs who recommend cheaper products may get more views, but I’ll take honesty and integrity over popularity any day.

As I’ve grown my hair long, almost to my butt, I have learned the value of good hair products, being kind to my hair, heatless styles etc. I used to never use many products but I’ve recently added some things in, including oil, and I can’t believe the difference. I only wash my hair 1-2x a week and with good products and treating it well-it is great!

Lisa has made some vids on the product (not for a while tho) but it seems to me that the last video I saw that lisa talked about Monat I think she said that it is still in her rotation and she named the specific prodcuts she likes, her husband and Dad I think still use the mens line, come to think of it, I am pretty sure that was in her last empties video. I think Lisa just recognizes that she has a very very diverse viewer base and monat for many reasons just isnt going to be for everyone, and i applaude Lisa for recognizing that and while she still might use it she recognizes that she has a very diverse viewer group so she tries to speak to all of us :) thats just my take and I am pretty sure she mentioned the products in her empties if you do a search you should be able to find her last empties video.

Loved this video. I remember getting that Suave Moraccan stuff and threw it out right after I did my hair with it. The worst stuff ever, at least for me. Even some of the more expensive products do not work that well for me like Brigeo (sp), Colleen's is okay, any Redken, Paul Mitchell. It was so disappointing. I tried the Living Proof line and my hair responded pretty well to some of their line. I know I have already said this but I used that darn Oribe and my hair has never been better. Unbelievable. Very expensive but I try to get it on sale and I don't have to use as much. Love the hair talk. Before I forget, I absolutelu cannot stand the Olaplex stuff. My hair was like straw after using that junk. It just goes to show that everyone's hair is different. Love all the comments too and recommendations from your viewers.

It’s true drug store is not good for your hair! Just like you, I tried both drug store and higher end products and it’s so obvious how much better the higher end products are. Just like you mentioned you don’t have to go to the highest end of the product lines. I use Redken products for blonde hair and they’re awesome and you can get great deals at Ulta. Watch for the sales! I did just splurge on some of the Colleen Rothchild hair products that you recommended because I like to try different things that are good for my hair. Just like makeup. So I can’t wait to try that and see what I think. Thanks for doing this experiment Lisa, I really appreciate it and the stress that you probably went through putting your hair through that!! I know how important your hair is to you lol. Lots of love to you ❤

Kerastase volume mouse with Aveda mouse mixed. All this has changed my life and hair . I wash my hair one or two times a week and my hair stays in its style . I wear in a bun at night and take it out the next morning. My curls are there and so much more volume .

I have very fine, colored hair (cover gray) and have found the shampoo and conditioner that work great for me: IGK Extra Love Volume and Thickening Shampoo and Moroccan Oil Light Conditioner. I spray Dry Bar Prep Rally just on my ends, and I use a small amount of Lanza Root Effects spray at the crown. If I use these products and blow dry my hair (on medium heat) I have success with keeping my style fresh for a couple of days. (It definitely tends to get oily faster if I air dry it.) ❤️

I use Renpure coconut cream nourishing 32 oz bottle. I did hair back in the 80s and it makes my hair smell and feel amazing. I use to bleach and highlight my hair, I did stop about three years ago and went back to my natural color a med cool brown, I do use a Dyson blowdryer and have been using this shampoo and conditioner for about 3 years now and my hair is down to my bottom its shiny and looks extremely healthy. I have used high end products I do use the Kenra Blow dry spray. I do my own roots with a root touch up and do a gloss treatment once a month for my ends and use the heritage dry shampoo in between . I do only shampoo and condition only once a week using my dry shampoo once in between. Sometimes you do not need all the high end but do have to pay attention to ingredients. Not all store bought is bad but I do love alot of professional products as well. Amika, Kenra, Purology etc

The best drug store clarifying shampoo is the Neutrogena Healthy Scalp clarifying and shine. My scalp feels so clean and my hair is so soft and shiny. Then I use my Olaplex shampoo right after. I use this Neutrogena about once a week. I never use drug store hair products but this is hands down the best. I have very fine and tangled hair. I absolutely love it and it's sulfate free. I only apply to my roots and then let the warm water wash the rest down my hair.

Lisa, Thank you for doing this study!! My hair is baby fine & blonde, almost the same color as yours but more golden.I get it highlighted every 5 to 6 weeks. I use WEN...& Love it!!! Me & My daughters hair has really grown longer & thicker with WEN!!! My hair tangles & Mats up with reg shampoos & breaks off. I use WEN, Italian Fig, it's very Moisturizing, for my dry color treated / bleached hair. I use it as the shampoo & conditioner, yew& a bit as leave in on the ends. I use oil on my hair, QUAI, or Paul Mitchell Get Skinny oil. I also take St Tropica hair vitamins, which has helped my hair grow & thicken up, I started taking it when my hair fell out terribly after Covid. I will never be without those vitamins, I use St Tropica hair treatment oil, & other products dry shampoo, & they just came out with shampoo & conditioner..which I am going to try! My hair dresser uses Matrix shampoo & conditioner on me & I've bought it from her,but WEN, is much better on my dry, natural curly, bleached hair. TY for doing this Study!!!

I'm 69 and holding lol. Looking over 10 years younger I hear often, due to being consistent daily with a total skincare regimen. Have very long ( Lisa's length) highlighted golden blonde highlights on toffee brown lowlights....pull it to a long side ponytail. Have some layers on the top and sides for framing face. I would NEVER wear it long like Lisa does at my age, but the long side does look pretty. I get compliments constantly. I have thick great hair...Im a lucky girl with good hair genes. As soon as I started eating better, drinking more water, laying low of carbs and sugar and now my golden key, Intermittent Fasting ~~ my hair just started growing like crazy. Ive been growing it long for 10 years ~ just fun!! Yes, I started using more expensive products mainly Pureology and Moroccanoil products. I DO LOVE the Biolage moisture shampoo & conditioners though, which are not drugstore cheap you can get at CVS. Going to try the Colleen Rothschild line next, with the deep conditioning mask~hear how wonderful it is. Thank you Lisa. PS.
