Phil Hanley began standup comedy by performing at open mics around Vancouver, often in between bands at music venues. In these establishments he discovered and honed his unique blending of material and crowd interaction that makes no two of his performances the same. Phil’s style can best be described as unpredictably reflective, delivered with sharp accuracy, and rooted in the grand tradition of joke-telling.
Phil's Comedy Central "The Half Hour" premiered November 14, 2015. Phil has previously been seen on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Late Night with Seth Meyers, The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson, The Pete Holmes Show, John Oliver’s New York Stand-Up Show, and @midnight. He has been showcased at numerous comedy festivals and can be seen regularly at The Comedy Cellar in New York City.

I was in the crowd for this show, he was up there for a solid hour it seemed. This is just part of the show. Most of us laughed the entire time and we really didn't want him to go, as you hear towards the end. I hope him and Steve do a 2 man show!

It’s hard enough to write and perform a 25 minute set, but he just stood there without anything pre-written and killed with 25 minutes of crowd work. That puts him in a tier of comedy professional that very few ever reach. Hilarious stuff!

@@PATISLAV Sure, and in case you have not found the definition, "three sheets to the wind" means that all three of your lines (ropes) that control the sails - two that handle the forward jib sail and one that handles the mainsail - have run through their chocks and are flapping wildly in the wind - you no longer have control of your sails or the direction of your boat
"Five West" can be interpreted as heading 5 degrees toward West from your current direction.
Put them together and it's an absolutely genius juxtaposition of one having a specific direction in life, and another being completely lost

Cowd work IS not easy, it takes special sets of skills combined and that's why many comedians do not do it, or only do it for a few mins. The set can easily go wrong but Phil really has the experience + skills to keep it going as long as he wants. Well done, Sir. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Hands down my favourite comic at the moment.
Was on a business trip to NYC from Thailand and grabbed tickets for Comedy Cellar. Phil's set was early in the evening and he destroyed.... Cant remember laughing so hard at crowd work. Been a fan ever since. Thanks for the metric ton of laughs over the last year Phil!

What a great video. I'm almost 13 minutes in and none of the hitting on a wife or girlfriend until it becomes unfunny. I hope it stays that way cuz this has been a masterclass in working a crowd.
Of course all this stuff is done on the Fly and I realized sometimes one thinks back and realizes they said something stupid they wish they didn't. Very easy to do so I don't mean to disparage some of the past work I've seen where that is definitely been an issue. Overall one of the best to be doing it currently
