I want Josh and Chris to know that these kinds of interviews do have an impact. I am an aspiring writer who can find myself crippled by the idea of rejection (rejection from an agent, studio, audience critics etc). The discussion here really puts things into perspective and reminds me of how important it is to just let my writing be what I love first because that is what the process and expression began as for me originally
Chris, you put your heart and soul into a movie that you were willing to present to audiences in hopes that they would discover the same enjoyment in watching it that you had in making it. It didn't quite work out exactly as you wanted, but that shouldn't diminish the fact that you were able to throw yourself out on a limb and take huge risks in order to try and bring something positive and entertaining into people's lives. We need more artists like you.
I’ve been noticing in recent times that a lot of joyous pieces of art which try to be wholesome or good get met with a lot of negativity, cynicism and hatred. Just the world we live in these days but it shouldn’t stop people from wanting to make that style of art because ultimately we need it.
I've noticed this too. It seems like so many people nowadays want something to be mad about and immediately look for the worst in everything they come across. Haven't seen the movie yet, but I am excited to give it a go when it gets a wider release.
I saw Poolman today and I loved it! It’s like a real film-like a 90s indie! Toronto doesn’t know what they’re talking about! This is LA before 2012!

I'm an artist, I'm 60 and apart from a couple of sliding doors moments where things could've gone either way, I have never been close to even being in the game regarding validation/success. I know lots of peers who ARE successful and lauded and that can be difficult, there is always the inner doubt that perhaps I'm just not good enough. However, ultimately I know I need to do what I do, it is who I am and that I feel I am true to myself and that is what matters. I really like Chris Pine as an actor, he has validation and success ANYWAY. But I also like him as a person as far as I can tell from the other side of a screen. And it IS very freeing to be able to do your thing as a creative from the perspective of love and belief and not dependent on criticism or how our work is received.
Greatly appreciated this thoughtful dive into how personal the creative process can and should be. I'm a writer who is always curious about what people think about my stories, and I'm currently stuck in the middle of several works-in-progress, and this gave him an additional feeling of recognition and support. Thanks.
Fair play & credit to him for doing it. Great question too about taking a risk, swinging the bat etc. Much respect to Chris.

Haven’t seen the movie, heard the buzz, but I’ll say this: Pine had a vision and he went for it. So many movies nowadays are just big budget CG fests, it’s nice to see something inspired and made with a point come out.
I 've always liked Chris pine's movies, but never really connected the why bit until now. He brings a genuine and really likeable sincerity to the table. Thanks for the podcast, a little peak behind the curtains of the movie makers world. Thank you.

i think that one of the absolute and very best flicks of all time is 2008's "Speed Racer", it deserves all the love and yet got lambasted for no good reason, currently sits at 6.1 on the internet movie database but deserves to be at the very top of the top 250 list.

Look at Ryan Gosling, he is 44 years old, he made his own film. Firstly he had bad reviews and now "Lost river" is a cult movie. Don't believe the critics who has not directed their own film.

May be "Lost river" is not a cult movie, but at least it was released in my country (Spain) with Spanish audio on 2015. Not all USA movies are released here and they compete with the european ones. I hope POOLMAN will be released too.

Chris seems like such a great guy and he’s a great actor and he honestly has it all as a total package and I’m surprised I don’t see him in more movies than what I do but maybe he’s just very selective.

Chris Pine is slowly turning into Kurt Russell
I have to say that I have not yet seen Poolman but the trailer intrigues me and in some way I get the sense that it is the lighter side of a movie like "Under the Silver Lake" which is also an L.A. centric movie. I feel as an artist whether a film maker or musician etc, you have to just make the art you want to make in a sincere way and damn the critics. I have also noticed over the last decade how exquisitely snarky and nasty critics like to be and this darkness seems to extend to society in general. Another equation is how many people in the states and maybe even in the world love to HATE on California. They take it as a blood sport, ha. I think that is part of the equation. It also has to do with the pop morays of the day and how that relates to art. I can tell you that most younger people would likely not have the patience to enjoy a movie like "Chinatown" or "Harold and Maude" - people today hyped up by instagram and tik tok swipes have different internal clocks- the pacing of well constructed and told movies doesn't work for them. Anyway- look forward to seeing Poolman.
Don't worry about the reviews. There is no bad art, only people's own twisted perceptions of what is good or bad. There's something to love (or hate) about every movie...except for Dune 2 because its perfect. I look forward to seeing Poolman because I like watching Chris Pine do Chris Pine things.

What exactly is Pine going for here? And the look at the premiere of the film. Looks like a homeless version of what Brad Pitt was doing two years ago or so, or what McConaughey was trying to do in Beach Bum, or a thrift store Jeff Bridges.
The thing is, both Pitt and McConaughey are kinda known as stoners, or "chill laid back cool dudes", it fits them. Same with Jeff Bridges.
Pine never was known to be this guy, it's not his public image at all. He works best when he's slick, focused, smart, stylish. Or thoughtful and he is thoughtful, I've seen interviews with him, he's a smart guy. So when he busts this out just out of the blue, he looks like he had a mental breakdown or hit the bottom, or something. It's like post Hell or High Water, Pine somehow found himself in a now 8 years lasting phase of constantly trying to look more and more like a bum, and I think he kinda reached the bottom with this (which would be genius if he actually was building towards a bottom and subsequent cleaning up of his image, comeback and redemption). Give me back slick and stylish Chris Pine please, bring back Captain Kirk, Jack ryan or Unstoppable kinda vibe and leave the hippies, stoners, washouts and semi-hobos to Pitt, McConaughey and Bridges.
If he has legit drug or addiction issues, which could be IDK, just admit it and go into rehab instead of just wilding like a nutcase in his 40s.
This is why actors need to STOP directing AND acting! That is an insult to the difficulty that goes into directing. It's a ton of work and forethought and stress. Do one or the other. Not both! One person does not have the time or energy to put full effort into both.
Therapy isn’t working.
To be honest Poolman looked like he was trying to do a Big Lebowski/Dude type of thing and it felt inauthentic. It was palpable just from the trailer. Same as Charlie Day’s Being There ripoff film. Both got slaughtered by critics and audiences.
I think artists need to learn from reviews rather than reject them. If you have the vast majority of reviews saying it ain't good...then it ain't good. You need to LEARN from it. Constructive criticism. If you can't learn then you will perish as an artist. Keep crafting your skills. Don't give up. A few bad reviews builds you up if you accept to learn from them. Your ego is in your way if you don't.

Chris Pine is imho charismatic smart likeable and handsome, and the character he plays in Poolman is dumb and off-putting. So it's difficult to watch him act as the character
