My personal favourite is a homopolar motor, but other things I show in this video are: Playing with magnets, Hanging things, putting a mac to sleep, playing darts, finding wall studs, magnetising a screwdriver, floating things (levitation) and making jewellery.

    • @XThexdemonataX
      @XThexdemonataX 8 років тому +1

      +Hate me Faggot No they don't, the point of my comment was to point out that NAND flash (the type of memory used in all flash drives) is unaffected by magnets and therefore there really is no inherent danger in sticking your thumb drive to a magnet like Evan Coffey seems to believe.
      However I am sure Mr. Coffey believes you should never put a flash drive on a magnet because mechanical drives that use spinning platters that have data magnetically written onto them ARE affected by magnets and he simply confused the two types of data storage.

      +Zach M even though the components themselves on the flash drive are not endangered by the magnet it is still possible to overwrite data due to induced currents by the change of the magnetic field

      It can damage data or physically destroy the magnetic drive, but if you use an SSD, a magnet won't "kill" your computer at any point of view.

      +iBuyNewStuff I dont think it's a good idea to put a flash drive on a magnet, magnets usually tend to ruin anything electronic. might wipe it.

    • @simplylinn
      @simplylinn 8 років тому +1

      +MiningNinjaOctopus Electronics usually don't care about magnetic fields. You should be careful about hard drives (non SSD-drives that is) since those use magnetism to store data on spinning disks as well as floppy disks (who uses those nowdays?)
      Flash-drives don't have anything sensitive to magnets.

    NEVER Hang a usb stick out of a magnet, specially of these strong ones, if you do this over a lenghty period of time you WILL lose data and never be able to retrieve it again. Apart from that, great video!

    • @Newjorciks
      @Newjorciks 8 років тому

      +Guido Freire USB sticks will not be affected by magnets in that way, they don't store data with magnets like spinning hard drives do, so the magnet will NOT affect the data.

    • @guidofreire9530
      @guidofreire9530 8 років тому

      +Newjorciks NFC USB's will "attach" to the magnetic field of the magnet, and when you take it out, the data will become unretrievable (Some companies CAN retrieve this data, but expect to pay a few thousand dollars)

    • @Newjorciks
      @Newjorciks 8 років тому

      Guido Freire Unless the data is stored magnetically or you move the flash drive to the magnet and away hyper fast a lot of times nothing will happen.

    As a voice of reason, I find it absolutely hilarious that so many people are freaking out about the USB! Heads up, if you have a computer/drive that has moving parts, then yes, keep it as far from magnets as possible. But if it is a Solid State Drive/USB aka 'anything that isn't really old,' then magnets are free soil.

    Correction: find screws in the wall. Screws will be in the studs, but the wood is not attracting the magnet. Now, if you find a screw you can assume there's a stud running up and down straight from the floor to the ceiling. Obviously don't drill or nail right where the magnet sticks otherwise you'll hit a nail or screw (likely a drywall screw).
    Source: have worked with stick framing before

    You don't want to use a magnet to hang a flashdrive, or any electronic guys. The magnetics will destroy the software. If the product says magnet safe, then feel free to risk it. Otherwise, you'll probably lose all of the data on your device.

    I don't know a lot about scientific technology nor magnetic technology but the first one the video showed us with the spinning thing. I wonder if you make a bigger version of that and could it produce energy? I may sound dumb. But it looked like it was doing something.

    That motor was cool! I'm going to try that since I already have a good collection of neodymium magnets and copper wire. You can also make a ribbon microphone using the long bar magnets, but it's complicated in a way and requires you buy a transformer. But it's cool, I've made several and they sound great. And just a warning to everyone: these magnets are really fragile and if they aren't put together gently, they can shatter. I know, I've accidentally ruined plenty.

    • @JoshSitar
      @JoshSitar 8 років тому

      Also, something really weird I accidentally discovered about these magnets is if you get one really close to a solder gun which is plugged in, the magnet will vibrate freakishly! This will also happen if the magnets get near a transformer plugged into the wall. It's really strange. Hold the magnet loosely in your hand but hold it so it can't jump out of your hand. Have fun!

    • @iBuyNewStuff
      @iBuyNewStuff  8 років тому

      +Josh Zook I wonder why that is? Must be pulsating currents in the solder gun that generates a field, who knows. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    *ATTENTION*: USING A MAGNET ON A USB DRIVE WILL NOT ERASE MEMORY, ALSO THE MAGNETS WILL NOT RESET YOU MAC, IT WILL *ONLY* PUT IT TO SLEEP. SAME WAY AS WHEN YOU'D CLOSE THE LID.

      I actually made a video about this topic, it's a common myth. Check it out. A USB will not be corrupted from magnets.

    It should be noted that these little ball magnets can be lethal if ingested. Small magnets have no place in a home with small children. Two or more balls in different areas of the digestive tract can become attracted to each other and eventually cause perforation of the intestine which is often lethal because it causes massive infection of the intestinal cavity.
