Used to play this song in a band back in the 70's when I was in high school. Yeah, we couldn't just listen to great music; we had to PLAY it to celebrate it. No computers around, just instruments, mics, and amplification. Oh, and the turntables we learned the songs off of. That's how it was.
Yeah! Tom Johnston! How could I get so lucky this morning?! Is it just me, but I like how Tom always plays like he's a leader, and he's not afraid of anything?! Same exactly like the concert they did back in 1972-73.
This performance had 9 Doobie Brothers...probably a record Tom Johnston - Lead vocals, guitar Pat Simmons - Lead guitar, backing vocals John McAfee - Rhythm guitar, backing vocals Michael McDonald - Keyboard, backing vocals Cornelius Bumpus - Keyboard, backing vocals Willie Weeks - Bass Chet McCracken - Drums Keith Knudsen - Drums, backing vocals Bobbie LaKind - Percussion
ahhh....the drug-addled hyped-up tempos !!!!! One of the best songs ever. I love Mike McDonald but The Doobies for me will always be Tom Johnston. The female singer I gig with was born in '71....one night whilst gigging someone asked for 80s rock and I said "Doobie Bros" and she was like "they're pop" (thinking What A Fool Believes etc) ...I had to explain to her that the Doobs were actually a rock band when they started out. :-)
Another cool switch like that is when Stevie Ray Vaughan broke a string on his Strat and had to perform a quick switch while still singing. That video is on UA-cam and is cool to watch. Tom's switch is cool too.
Seen these guys at Chicagofest back in the 80s . It was so crowded that they closed the place from letting people in. One of the best concerts that I have ever seen.
Absolutely right, my friend. NOT The Doobie Bros. without him. imo Honestly, there isn't a song of theirs that I care 4 during the "Michael McDonald era". Miss Tiran P. on bass too.
1:03 Stevie Ray Vaughan done the same thing 7 years later at his Austin City Limits concert while performing "Look At Little Sister". Awesome Guitar swap!
Man does this sound good. Stereo drummers filling up the rhythm and not over bearing, the guitars sounding great, bass is right there, what a job of this sound engineer. 1982? Fuckin' awesome! This shit is ALIVE.
@@jacobcooper5222 .... Oh, I understand. What I'm referring to is that this generation missed out on a time when this music was played in the clubs, HS dances and on the radio__back when this was the music of the day.
Me and my wife watched these guys a few years ago and we were in a balcony and the fans got jumping to this song and we could fell it swaying, it was a blast but i was scared to death,i thought we were going down.
Great video... Doobie Brothers were my absolute favorite band growing up... ! I used to listen their music to get pumped up before my football and basketball games. (HS level)
I normally avoid the Greek. The parking is a nightmare and certain seats get an echo from the hill behind, but I would have paid top dollar to see this show.
Looking at what I see now I am so glad I grew up as a young man in the 70's 80's and 90's. Sure would be nice to be young again but I certainly wouldn't be as happy as I was during those 3 decades. what a fantastic time be alive in the USA it was.
We had to very large speakers in the WNAP (Indianapolis) studio. When I played China Grove, somebody from the accounting department would often come downstairs to ask me to turn it down. Only oine way to play China Grove: LOUD!!! The Doobies opened a PBS in studio concert in the 70s with China Grove. It was masterful.,
Brooks, Dunn, Jelly Roll- I don’t think you understand what this song means to people who have gone/are going through incredible heartache. This has been the worst year I have lived - I’m 69 years old. The words “finding more and more truth in those words written in red” are a life preserver to those of us trying to hang on. Thank you.
Wikipedia is wrong. I have this whole video & remember that Pat Simmons (guitar player with hat on) said during this show that this was their very last concert.
how did the middle front brother move from tank top t-shirt on song#2 to shirt, suit and tie for #3?! haha! I get the feeling this wasn't exactly the same order of songs as the concert!
I don't know how you got that tone out of a Telecaster because I would have bet money it was done with a Les Paul originally. I just found out that it was recorded with a 335.
Does anybody have footage from the 1976 SAN FRANSISCO concert with TOM JOHNSTON, PAT SIMMONS ,JEFF "SKUNK" BAXTER, TIRAN PORTER, MICHEAL MCDONALD, KEITH KNUDSON, BOBBY LAKIND, JOHN HARTMANN, AND THE TOWER OF POWER HORN SECTION?
Tom Johnston looks like an 80s Oakland A’s player with the stache and mullet! Glorious!
Holy Shit! These guys are Rock & Roll royalty, one of the greatest American bands of all time.
Wow over 40 yrs ago. Rock N Roll sure has gone the crapper over the years!
Been taken there by the "DEI" crowd turning popular music into (C)rap.

Doobie Bros & ZZ Top....America's two best bands.

Yes!
Yeah, that was really impressive! Good job by the roadie/guitar tech too!

Tom Johnston changing guitars mid song= EPIC!! haha

Isn't it funny how Tom and Pat sound so much alike. I love both of them! Great Band!

The look on Tom's face at the end: "YEAH, that's what I'm talking about!!" One of the best bands this country ever produced, the Doobie Bros.
You got that right!
I rate the Doobies and ZZ Top as the USA's two best bands. Lindsay Evans from NZ.
This country 🙄
At least tell is where that is!!!
@@sjefhendrickx2257 You have to believe in resilience. It ain't over till it's over.
Absolutely righteous performance. My favorite Doobie Brothers song. Really tight band.
O Wow we like that Music 🎶 ❤🎉
Hello from a big Doobie Brothers fan watching from Italy ,the doobies are the greatest
haha, love how he switches guitars without missing a beat
1:58 "...so long, brother, it's been great working with you..."

Hard to beat this song by The Doobies - China Grove has always been one of my favorites. Thanks for the clip.
This is my favorite Doobie song. See Tommy every year in concert here in Detroit. I'll be there as long as they are.....thanks for a great song.
You gotta love Tom Johnston. He never meant a lyric, he couldn't forget. Rock on, buddy.

Awesome guitar switch....thank god for roadies and techs!
Steve Woan and they're filming this!...guess it kind of works as a real life situation for musicians
+Steve Woan You can say that! Still missing mine..... :)
I'm from this generation and I completely agree with you they have no idea what real music is

they were and still are the best rock band ever.
I rate the Rolling Stones as no. 1.
Until Michael Mcdonald ruined them
I used to live in Montara and the old school house that was next door is where the Doobies used to rehearse. I was so lucky and showing my age!
Best version I have ever heard.
The Best Rock n Roll band in history!

Yes was a Great Concert, Loved the Conga drums and 2 drummers how they split the rolls on stage left to right that night
A Johnston McDonald lead Bros would of been unstoppable in 80s
Amazing bands and songs that endure for about 40 years
Never gets old.

I saw them sometime this century. In 82, I saw them in a reunion setting, with Micheal McDonald.
Makes me want to grab a mike and sing along! ;>)
I think Tommy is asking for a new guitar at 0:29 and gets ignored. At 1:05 he asks again more emphatically and finally gets one.
terrific
Not bad. Wish the music was this good today.
We are counting on your generation to put us back on track. :)
can't stop talking bout the china grove....
I was not aware that Giants' pitcher Tim Lincecum was once in this band !!
