Good stuff guys! Similar speed to Thomas and I switched from a 3W to the 17* UW last fall and haven't looked back. Gets up without spinning up, and plays neutral so it's easy to work, and handles changing conditions well. It's been a real weapon. 👍
The UW wood is one of my favorites in the bag.. easy to hit, long and easy to work the ball (high , low , draw, fade) and also good when you have to hit a ball out of the semirough....love it 👍🏽🏌🏼♂️😃
Knowing that Thomas also struggles with a 3Wood on the fairway makes me feel so much better about myself👍 It looks as though Thomas has now found his solution👍👍🤞🤞 I struggled for years trying to find a 3Wood that I could hit off the deck (as we say in the UK) and I Failed miserably, so for several years, I haven't carried a Fairway wood in my bag. But this year I did some testing at a Fitting centre and thought that I would end up with a 5Wood. However, the new Callaway Rogue ST MAX-D 16deg was perfect for me as a senior golfer👍❤
I love my 19 degree UW!!! built it with a Ventus Red shaft and it’s been a high launching but SOFT landing 235 club for me! would love to play the 17 degree if it acted like a 3wood but I haven’t tried that yet so thanks for the video guys!
I've got the UW in 19 degrees with the stock Hazardus shaft in regular. Love it. Straight and longer than my 3 wood (Ping SFT - 16 degrees). And I can hit it from the FW (I can't with the 3W)
I have sold all my drivers and fairway woods and gone with a 300 Mini and the Callaway 19 and 21 UW and its been a game changer !!!! I might try to add the 17 a 1/2 longer since the 17 and 19 are stock at the same length .
I couldn’t hit fairwoods either until I realized I have to still hit down on them… not like an iron mind you but the INTENTION is still a downward blow. Fixed me right up though. Oh, and I just ordered the Apex 19deg to replace my 2 hybrid. :). Good stuff guys!
Thomas I swapped my 3 wood for the same club thanks to Tyler at Wilmington . And it’s so much better and flys straight. Great choice. I could tell you wanted to keep hitting it.
The utility woods are an amazing product by Callaway. I have the 19 degree and its my favorite club in the bag....off the tee and fairway way better than a 5 wood or normal hybrid!
I just g0t this club, turned down to 16 degrees and plus 1/2 inch shaft. Its simply amazing. Long, reasonable spin and easy to work. I tee it low, hit like a hybrid and it travels like a driver and the spin does not seem to hurt. My st190 3 wood is,now forsale. Great video guys.
@@howardtacub5026 harzdus smoke, black, 70g stiff. It carry my driver 260 ish and rolls out to 285. This club can often match the overall distance and with a lot less dispersion.
I have been thinking of replacing my TM 3HL M1 with the 17* UW. I already play the 3hl at 42” so I don’t think the 41.5” of the UW would be a big deal. Especially based on how far I hit the 19* UW. Strongly consider both a 17* and 21*
Thomas has a quick tempo and transition in general. His problem with three wood lies in that. If he just went for "feel" of swinging slowly he would hit it fine. 4th swing where he said, "might be a little better" and it was great was just that. way more time in transition and patient. It's hard with a long three wood in your hand to do that but it's the key.
Thomas I like the idea of the 42 in shaft upgrade . I have the 19 degree which plays more like a 5 wood and love it . Would it be a good idea to get the 17 degree as well with that shaft length to fill in the gap ?
Jesus! What a promotional video for the Callaway UW! I’m afraid to just order this 7° weaker than my driver cause it may go just as far, or even further than my driver does! 😂
Another great video, I am thinking about trying the Apex UW 21 degree but am unsure about my gapping, how much further did Thomas hit the 17 vs the 19 degree that he has previously tested, my 15 degree wood carries approx 275-280 so I am looking for a 255-260 club that will be mostly used for approaches into par 5s.
Can you really use this club approaching greens? The land angle is 38 degrees and back spin is like a driver at 2600. The distance is great. Looks more like a 3 wood replacement for tee shots. I would be curious to see 19 and 21 degree numbers are for land angle and spin.
Two years ago, I cut my strong Callaway Epic Sub Zero 3-wood to play 42.5" - it made a huge difference. I would suggest trying the same. I play mine open at 12.5-degrees and love it as a straight, non-drawing tee club on tighter holes.
I wonder if changing the 7 gram weight will not only affect swing weight but forgiveness too. My 17 deg has a 2 gram weight, and my 21 deg that I just got has a 7 gram weight (haven't tried the latter yet but will soon).
I am going to test this club this week to see what it does against my current callaway epic max 3 wood which I hit well and like - with the mmt shaft cut 0.75”; and against my callaway super hybrid 2021 (18 degrees set at 19) with the Aerotech shaft and which I also got well. If I go for this to replace one or both then I would cut it 0.5” and go with the mmt shaft. My irons and wedges also have the mmt shaft. Can’t say enough about that shaft as well as the Aerotech.
The UW is a great club. I loved it, but got rid of it to get another wedge. I spent the winter going back and forth over my bag setup and went with adding a wedge, but I could easily go back to the UW. The problems us golfers go through. SMH.
This year, with my used 2017 M2 driver that I purchased, everything hooks left. It doesn’t matter how I adjust the loft up or down. It has a regular 56 gram graphite shaft. When I hit a 3 wood off the tee (one from a starter set) it flies straight as an arrow. So it can’t be my swing. It must be the club/shaft is not matching well for me. Club fitting in my future.
It could very well be your swing or even your grip or stance. The face of the club could be too closed at impact or the lie could be too upright. Could be any number of things but the driver is a different swing than the other clubs. Fairway wood is more like a hybrid swing than a driver swing.
As someone who has been watching 3 wood reviews and looking for a new one, Thomas has crushed both the TSi wood series and also the new Stealth series. This is a neat idea but doesn't have the height or spin to hold a tournament level green which I know is your goal. Just a thought 🤷♂️
Without seeing strike data I'd have to presume that the mavrik is probably too flat for you. I've seen those heads as low as 55* lie angle. It's just hanging the face open. Could be shaft but I doubt it. Your path numbers scream tight draw and start line is good something is happening in lead deflection though that's holding the toe down for it to cut like that.
I finally just acquiesced and went Ping G425 Max in 5 wood with a 3 wood shaft and 7 wood. I simply can't launch a 3 wood. My 5 wood goes around 230-235 carry and rolls out to 245-250. I've tried almost every 3 wood out there and none are any longer carry and all fly lower and less consistent than the 5 wood.
Many have said the Cleveland Launcher XL Halo but a huge difference with the Apex UW is that it's hosel is .335 so it accepts fairway shafts not hybrid shafts at .370
I mean that 3 wood is just the wrong 3 wood for him. Wrong shaft, wrong head, you're not closing it well. Maybe it's too flat too. I have a hard time believing he can't hit a 3 wood. Something about the weighting of the mavrik is wrong for him.
It's not even close. I know what I'd do... I have the 21 and 17 UW. I love them both.

What’s your swing speed with that club? I’ve been thinking about something similar but no way to test or get fitted for this near where I am. Thanks.

Could you test srixon clubs? Minjee Lee carried her srixon fw ~235y with a regular shaft to reach the par 5 15th hole.

One who like callaway apex uw mostly will love KASCO Power Tornado FG Forged Superhyten. About the same length with apex uw but with more distance.

If you never want to hit from the fairway to hold a green this is great for a tee ball. Definitely need more spin to hold a green

Nice comparison that proves out some of my Mad Scientist builds.
I am curious what Wing Weight you have the 17* set at.

would turning up the loft as well on the Mavrik close the face and make it more upright? (you did mention the spin going up so I get it)

that's my 4 iron length...pump some iron my man
You must be carrying 3 wood 290 and driver over 300 carry? Better sign up for the tour lol
So how did Thomas do with the UW on the course? Did the club turn out to be as great on the course as it was in the studio?
