  • Spring is here, and it's time to build your own garden boxes! In this video, Davis Walker and Doc Jones from the Homegrown Herbalist School walk you through an incredibly simple, budget-friendly method of building your own garden boxes. We believe in keeping things straightforward - so we're here to show you that you don't need to be a professional carpenter to get started with your gardening project.
Whether you're a beginner gardener, renting a property, or simply someone looking for an easy and affordable gardening solution, this guide is for you. With just a few basic tools - planter wall blocks, rebar, a level, a tape measure, a hammer, and some two by sixes - you can build your very own garden box for around 50 bucks!
Throughout the video, Davis and Doc highlight the advantages of this simplified garden box over larger ones, discuss the ideal wood choices, and even share a neat Japanese technique for preserving the wood. This is essentially a Lego game for adults; you can assemble and disassemble these garden boxes with ease, making them perfect for those with a transient lifestyle.
So, don't let the lack of tools or experience deter you from starting your gardening journey. With this video, you can build your first garden box in just a matter of minutes. So, let's get those green thumbs working and start growing!
Remember, every big garden adventure begins with a single box. Happy gardening!

That's how I built mine 2 years ago, but I made mine 3 boards high and made 2 rows with a middle walkway that turns right for 8-feet of more beds on both sides and the end cap. It's really adjustable, and nice when you aren't sure where you want permanent beds yet.

“Shou Sugi Ban” is the method! I only know because I’ve been wanting to try it for awhile now. I love the idea of using it for garden beds!

Thank you for the upload Gentlemen! I'm on it tomorrow to make one as I love new garden growing projects. I do not have any grow boxes. I do use my old Beehive boxes and they do work well but I think one of these would be a nice addition. Thanks again.

Do you burn both sides of the wood? All sides of the wood?

How about coating with linseed oil or something like that to preserve the wood? Any cons to this?

Good to see you out of the office Doc. Maybe you can suggest a few herbs to put in our new garden beds. Have a Great day!

Very helpful. QUESTION: Can I legally buy the Brigham Tea tincture, living in Washington State, without the fed going nuts?

Can you build this on concrete with a weed barrier on the bottom. We don’t have much open ground.

I bet you could. The only issue may be slow drainage? Over time would be a lot of moisture in the concrete. But you absolutely could do nice size, but smaller container gardening, to allow for better drainage, such as with big pots. But you could also build similar smaller boxes, but with drainage catcher underneath, or not. I’m growing multiple herbs in a long plant hanger, hanging off the exterior stair rail. It’s nicely lined with all natural coconut husk, allows for optimum drainage which herbs like. Have fun and success growing.
