This is going to help me so much. Just started to learn guitar at 56yo and finding it difficult stretching my fingers for chords. So glad I found this exercise. Many thanks 😊
I am from a small city of India and a retired person. One day I came across one of your lesson video. It was soo good that after that I started regularly following your lessons. Will you advice me how to increase my speed on fretboard. 🙏
Does this work? Yes, it does. I've been following Lauren's advice on finger stretching for about a month. Fingers have greater independent reach. Pinky has become stronger. I think I'll begin doing back stretching exercises or simple yoga to strengthen my back for playing guitar. Thanks Lauren.
"I didn't learn this exercise until have been playing guitar maybe for 10 years" thanks that you've released this exercise and made available for everyone. So I dont have to play the guitar for that long just to loosen my fingers just like how long you did.
@@LaurenBateman You are AWESOME, I'm 70 years old, and this old man is totally inspired by your lessons. I will continue to follow your advice. Mil gracias
A most useful video , Lauren . ( Oh those old chromatic runs and scales ) . Just got to practice now . Barre cords are still a little way off yet , as are those hammer on 's and pull offs . The irritating part is that I used to be able to do them . I hate my wrist joints . lol .
Hi Lauren, since I’m petite and have small hands I purchased a 3/4 size guitar. I started playing weeks ago. I’ve been practicing the 2 finger chords (your video) and also practicing the spider exercises. Even with the proper thumb position, I’m still muting the strings and my reach is not great. Also I’m pushing down too hard (dents in fingers). I do daily stretch exercises. I know it takes time and perseverance. Any other exercise suggestions? Thanks again for the great videos ☺
Love your videos Lauren. I’m new to playing and as I practice, my left shoulder (muscle above scapulla) is killing me to the point where I can’t practice for more than 5 minutes if that. It didn’t hurt before so I know it’s from guitar practice. The more I practice the worse it gets. My left hand also hurts so much. My hand is very awkward and trying to move it forwArd so the fingers can reach is making it hurt. Suggestions? Thanks so much. Oh, I have a classical guitar and it’s on my left leg. 😊
Most likely you are squeezing your back while playing. Are you using a guitar strap? That can help alleviate a lot of posture problems, but tension will carry. From our wrist, to our forearm, to our border, to our shoulder, into our backs. Remember to breathe. Keep good posture. And if you feel yourself tensing, you have to constantly remind yourself to relax.
Dear Lauren. i hope you won’t mind my probably very silly question but is it normal to struggle with the one finger per fret positioning? i’ve recently bought a Yousician app and lots of exercises are based on this. it’s almost as if it was completely natural for everyone to be able to do this right from the start but.. my hand simply can’t stretch that far. i think i’m just seeking reassurance from an experienced guitar player that this is not something we are born with and can be achieved with exercises. it seems almost impossible at the moment. i’ve actually hurt my hand today trying too hard, i think 🙂 thank you in advance for your reply. in the meantime i will try doing the walking spider exercises on frets that are a little closer together. thank you for everything that you do. with warm wishes, malgosia
I have just started with the guitar and I'm having trouble with one finger per fret even at the 9-12 or 10-13 frets. I thought I'd be more flexible naturally, but it ain't so.
I was really surprised when I did the second exercise that my fingers moved independently already, though my pinky is the same size as an AA battery so reaching to string six, without moving my wrist, is not going to happen therefore I settle on string five.
You say that chords up the neck are easier to play. I actually have a harder time at around 'C' to play a Bar Chord. I just can't get it to ring out. What am I doing wrong? My action seems to be set-up correctly.
@@LaurenBateman Thanks for replying. I use 12s on my acoustic, sometimes even 11s. I do have a Telecaster too. That one does seem to be ok. I even lowered the action last night on my acoustic (Orangewood Ecko (Live)), and it's still harder to push down on the strings up around 'C', 6th string. I dare not go any further. The Truss Rod feels maxed out. Maybe I just need to keep practicing. I feel like I've finally mastered Bar Chords. Now I want to play them all the time. Thanks again.
I've been playing violin for 47 years. I have very small hands. Yes. They will Stretch. Stretching before and during chord practice helps dramatically in reaching chords without the buzzzzzzzz. My problem at my age is the broken fingers over the past. Adapt, modify. Practice practice practice practice practice practice practice practice practice. There is only Gratification of succuss over time. . There is no instant gratification in music.

You're not alone. It's not easy at all. Why I don't like those 'Big Box' programs. I find they move too quickly and assume too much.

That's a great starting point!
Is this exercise the same as 1st position exercise?
Yes
Hey Lauren! Will this help with those add6 or add9 (Chuck Berry/The Police) chords? Thanks!
This will help with all chords that you feel are too much of a reach.
You are awesome!

Maybe your strings are too thick for your strength level. Try electric guitar first if you have one. Also, most likely the bottom two strings.

Welcome aboard!
What if you have a small hand
I've worked with students with both large and small hands. You can stretch them still no matter how small.

At least 30 minutes every day. Each day you'll get better.
Yes. Even 15 every day helps.
That's Handy, lol.

I just can't make music with a guitar. Strumming just sounds like noises. I'm ready to pack it in.
