Elvis is alive he's in the Philippines. He manages a pool hall and pawn shop.. They serve good fried chicken there..
The Washing Machine song made me burst out laughing. There's no way they were trying to play this straight.
no, Elvis is not dead.. he just went home.
Eric Hudson I love that line.
I worked at a country radio station in Pawhuska Oklahoma in the early 1980's that had a lot of Orion albums and promo singles in their music library. Shelby Singleton couldn't get big stations to play his records (because most were junk or reissues of ancient sun material) so they targeted the small stations that weren't so selective. I doubt they were ever played on the air.
Elvis is actually in a cheap, shoddy retirement home and has JFK as a roommate.
Bubba Ho-Tep is a great film.
Bubba Ho-Tep?? What's that?
I thought you were making a reference to the film as it features the aforementioned characters in a retirement home.
Check it out, it's a great Bruce Campbell film. :)
They live three's company style with Michael Jackson too.
+FrankChickens
Joking.
Gotcha :-D
My dad wasn't known for crying, but he xame close to it when he told my mother and I that he died.
Ben, I am speechless. This is just the most perfect episode you've ever done. It has it all.
This video's title reminds me of one of many random phrases that the Pittsburgh Penguins NHL team's radio announcer Mike Lange says when a Penguins player scores a goal. "Ladies and gentlemen, Elvis has JUST left the building!"
I hated that he died on August 16th. Completely overshadowed my 7th birthday and every birthday since.
Sarcasm included for your pleasure. ;-)
25:43 Jeezuz! It sounds like Elvis when he was on the can having his heart attack!! Push, Elvis, push!!!!
Great tribute to the King of Rock n' roll. Btw, have you heard of the Australian cartoon Little Elvis and the Truckstoppers? I won't spoil the whole series but there was an episode where the main character "Little Elvis" hated his own birthday because it fell on the day of Elvis' death and his parents, who are big Elvis fans would cry on that day every year.
Oh, I forgot that even existed. I used to have it on VHS.
Oh cool! I just happened to stumble across that episode on UA-cam when looking up Australian shows lol.
I’ve seen this show a couple of times, but dubbed into Spanish.
That intro gave me goosebumps. 10/10
0:26 KTLA of Los Angeles, a VHF-TV station whose antenna was in the right location to hit San Diego during the day. They had well-known bit actor Tom Hatten host movies and Popeye cartoons on the weekends in the 1980s. They also ran stuff like the "Dynaman" parody show (the same stuff that ran on "Night Flight") and other odds and ends.
17:16 Ghost Elvis!
MrJohndoakes I grew up watching an analog VHF station like that. It had the electrical noise in the picture just like this KTLA clip.
MrJohndoakes nothing like classic KTLA.
MrJohndoakes I grew up with those KTLA Sunday morning Popeye cartoons. AWESOME CHILDHOOD!
I learned from comments about KTLA uploads from the originating source, MicroJow's UA-cam channel, that it was originally owned and operated by Roy Rogers. Is that correct? Anyway, it's because of MicroJow and contemporary news bloopers compilations that I know of KTLA (KTLA seeming to be chock-full of news bloopers these days), and MicroJow's also where I learned about another SoCal feature, i.e. Cal Worthington.
@@ladyi7609 Wikipedia says it was originally owned and operated by a Paramount Pictures subsidiary called "Television Productions, Inc." and was a DuMont network affiliate in 1947-48, before becoming a Paramount TV network station for the short number of years that over-the-air network existed. It was an independent station afterwards and it was owned by Gene Autry and not Roy Rodgers, as part of Autry's Golden West Broadcasters group from 1963 to 1982. It was one of the first superstations thanks to microwave satellite uplinking, and it was included in a lot of early cable TV packages.
Don't know if this has already been referenced, but in the early - mid 70's there was a performer called Alan (never used his last name), whose claim to fame was being the very first Elvis impersonator, and this was years before Elvis died. He had a surprising amount of success (maybe for all those folks who couldn't go to see the actual "King" in concert), before finally retiring, feeling that the Elvis impersonator market had become oversaturated. He released a few records, and used to appear on the Jerry Lewis labor day telethon. Just learned he died a few years back. Hopefully he's serenading with Elvis in the Great Beyond.
Just today I saw Elvis, Jimi Hendricks, Salvador Dali and David Bowie in a VW beetle at the local McDonalds drive thru.
Thank you. Thank you very much. I have been held hostage for forty years by HCPentz. He wants 10 million dollars and then I'm free. -Elvis Presley
How much do we need to pay him to keep you?
Can't wait for the song poem episode! Good stuff as always, Ben.
Love Archive episodes on topics likes these. Contrary to what you might think, your little history lessons are actually my favorite part.
im stupidly glad to see an entire oddity archive devoted to this subject
I'm no Elvis fan, but this stuff is fascinating. Well put together video.
Do you have a copy of "Having Fun With Elvis on Stage"? It's an album that consists of nothing but Elvis's between-song-banter, no music, just that. It could be a good episode of Ben's Junk IMO.
there are two sequels to it, as well
That song poem episode sounds amazing.
Ive always been looking for a copy of "Heartbreak" hotel on 8 track! Cant beat the Elvis conspiracy theories though!
I like how most of those Orion albums have a "collectors edition" sticker on the packaging. As if Orion had a dedicated fan base and the most common version has more songs than a supposed "normal edition"
Very good I always enjoy your videos this was cool good job
I'm bingeing your entire back catalog of videos after only just having discovered your channel and when I landed on this one, I knew immediately where you'd gotten the first clip you showed; I actually just fast forwarded to the credits to double-check that and I was right! It's from MicroJow, a channel I've been subscribed to for years. I remember happening upon that particular upload and being stoked to actually see the breaking news bulletin for the very first time, given how I wasn't even born until after Elvis passed away. BTW, my dad bore a striking resemblance to Elvis -- well, a Native American Elvis, anyway. He'd have been way too young and way too "stuck in South Texas" to be the real article, BTW, and died over fifteen years ago anyway, so.
Nice Lasko 16" Oscillating Pedestal Fan. I got an identical one in my room right now. (also fantastic vid)
26:04 Can somebody get that Elvis impersonator out of the wind tunnel? 😂
27:39 It sounds like the intro to Jailhouse Rock is mashed up with the first two notes to Any Way You Want Me (That's How I Will Be) repeated twice which dosen't quite fit at all.
Tumbs up for Eilert Pilarm! The true king of Sweden.
12:25 I’d be willing to bet the letter regarding the movie deal is real; the letter is signed by one David Dortort. He was the creator of two popular Western series, The High Chaparral, and most famously, Bonanza.
27:50 I thought this was the Happy Days theme at the start instead of Jail House Rock lol
elvis presley was my 1st rock n roll superstar i'd ever heard at the age of 1.cause of 'jailhouse rock'.same way john lennon wanted to be a rock n roller himself cause of e.p..the beatles were my 1st rock n roll superstar band.
I can come closer to believing Andy Kaufman is still alive than Elvis. :-)
Andy Kaufman is Donald Trump.
On the "Is Elvis Alive?" book: You know you've not convinced anyone that Elvis is still living when the audio track of the interview fails to match much of its transcript.
On the "Orion" stuff: Good luck getting the words of "Washing Machine" out of your head; that song is bound to spawn so many deranged mental images that you can't keep track of them.
On the Elvis soundalikes: These all made me realize how hard Elvis Presley's voice must have been to duplicate, even before he succumbed to a heart attack at such a young age.
On the "Tribute to Elvis" album: It is well-meaning, but the vocalists sound totally disengaged from the words they are supposed to utter, the lyrics are nothing to write home about, and the third song excerpted here sounds like the bastard offspring of Marty Robbins' "My Woman, My Woman, My Wife" and Skeeter Davis' "The End of the World."
Can’t believe I didn’t realize that is Andy Kaufman on the box till now . To quote a line from Gerry Anderson’s super car “ well now who’s the fool ?”.
...so is it just me, or does the "mystery voice" on the tape sound suspiciously like a slightly slowed down recording of Lee Majors?
rdfox76 I hear was paid 6 million dollars for doing that recording.....
They had a Japanese Elvis impersonator on _The Gong Show_ last night (it was on the ads for the show).
I agree with many of the other comments, great work on this episode! However, regarding the covers of "Jailhouse Rock" ... WHERE'S JAKE AND ELWOOD WHEN YOU NEED THEM!!??!
The "Elvis" on that sounds a lot like Ral Donner who performed the narrative on the documentary "This is Elvis". Donner died in 1984. And on a side note, if i remember correctly, Bill Bixby "hosted" that "Is Elvis Alive" commercial in the heyday of the late-night infomercial
I had an old room mate who was REALLY into Orion (the performer).
I got stung❤❤❤
26:55 Why breaking a heart, when braking is more effective
That "Elvis" on that tape sounds like Mr. Plinkett doing an Elvis impersonation.
15:26 Gene Smith also likes Wourther's Candies
I had the sneaking suspicion when I saw the thumbnail for this that you were going to reference *that* book and tape. Back in the mid 80s my great aunt (who I was staying with at the time) bought a copy of it and we listened to the tape. After a few minutes I came to the conclusion that it was nothing but a shameless attempt by the author to promote the book itself and it seemed fake as all hell. I'm glad to know that even back then my instincts were spot-on.
Elvis the King of Rock is now the God Of Rock
It seems like a lot of things surrounding the theories that Elvis is alive liked to call themselves "The Elvis Files" considering I can't find anything on the tape at all beyond an upload of the video on UA-cam.
Check out Eilert Pilarm for one of the most iconic impersonators. ;)
25:03 What your favorite Elvis sounds would sound like if they were effectively terrible.
Alt Title: Everyone recovering On August 17th 1977
THE BOOK was in 1988? I remember it. also i swear a few years later that they did the VOICE PATTERN TEST on television and ....IT WORKED!!!
I miss the Don and Mike show for their Elvis Death Day shows.
Edit: Eilart Pilarm!!
Elvis died on the way back to his home planet.
23:15 That's just what they want you to think.
that should be, "you aren't anything but a hound dog."
As of today, ebay has that Elvis tribute 8 track you had that was messed up. I. Just typed Elvis tribute 8 track. I was just curious to see if they had one.
Actually, not long after this episode, a viewer donated another copy. It's currently sitting in the Record Ripoffs candidate bin.
Respiratory ailment ? So that's what it's called when you're trying so damn hard to shit that your brain explodes ? Good to know. I'm going to have to dig up my old PDR.
Ohhhhh fuck? Hahahahahahahahaha....Poor old Beefheart needed to be a bit more safe as milk to compete with that.
He probably heard it and got a bout of bongo fury.
28:29 I'll bet the Shaggs did, too.
27:33 Burning low
I purchased that book because of it's appearance in an earlier episode and man is it a huge tinfoil hat mess.
The Green Meanie lol best comment ever !
Haha, it's true thought! The parts Ben touched on are only just the beginning of it's problems.
Man, the 80s was full of denial!
God, that last album is the exact kind of crap that my dad would love. It's embarrassing.
Someone tried to drown the VHS of truth but failed!
28:00 Poor man's Elvis meets poor man's Tijuana trumpets
The "-sploitation" suffix? Isn't this Cinema Snob's territory?
I have an LP by Elvis Presley, Jr. :p
There's a documentary about Orion on Netflix (I think it was Netflix) it was pretty good.

NEW EPISODE
Looks like the 1-900 industry predicted the Atlanta film production boom
Elvis in the window? Hell, no...it was Nicholas Cage looking for conspiracy clues to find the Presley treasures.
People need to let this man rest in peace. Jesus Christ...
17:14 Do you believe in ghosts? I do.
14:41 -- Yes or no, is Elvis dead or alive?
75% YES
25% NO
31:00 check out the book WORST ROCK AND ROLL RECORDS OF ALL TIME
Sorry. What were Ben’s annotations during the supposed interview? I have heard that album of random concert chatter and I believe Elvis’ voice was deeper there than on that tape. What is the real explanation behind the interview?
Remember that time Elvis was a professional wrestler? I do.
I know it is not 10 years already, but, make a Archive about Michael Jackson and the conspiracies about his death (or life after disappearance)!
With Elvis: some people REALLY thought he could still be alive. Its just not the same with Michael. Michael still being alive rumors just never caught fire like that. I would say, Tupac still being alive conspiracy has more traction, but, nothing comes anywhere near the Elvis rumor.
mullet Tupac alive in Serbia
I once witnessed this female Japanese Elvis impersonator. She was really good. Had a great voice, but she had a speech impediment where she couldn't use the letters B,P, and V, so she substituted them all with the letter F. She also couldn't use the letter K, but worked around it by using the letter C. It was barely noticeable. And she just trashed the letter L.
I think that I heard about this medium who could channel Elvis through her pet Schnauzer. I can't verify, but thought to mention.
Elvis' soul is dead too? I though the soul exist on after the body and mind die.
Elvis tried selling his soul to Satan but after losing a fiddle competition to an 11 year old boy, the devil disassociated himself from country music leading Elvis to sell his soul to The Flying Dutchman. Upon death, The Flying Dutchman put Elvis's soul into his soul sack, never to be seen again and killing his soul for good.
@@TheKing0fSting Let's hear it for the soul sack ! lol
I think I want the 9 beh 12.
Elvis, Adolf and Jesus are still alive in an island somewhere.
Where did they tape the interview, a highway??
now you have to do an episode on all the "paul is dead" books (i know, you probably won't)
Elvis is alive? Who knows... Elvis is drunk? absolutely!
Ace’s voice isn’t they bad
Poor Elvis must be spinning in his grave over all those BAD impersonations of him...that is if he's dead & buried.
29:00 ever heard of the SONG POEM thing? there is a movie about it. EVEN REARD OF JOHN TRUBEE "BLIND MANS PENIS"?
32:15 From a hard working butt pirate to a movie star? (I could not have heard that correctly.)
I think that's the lyric. What the fuck!
My grandma actually bought a ticket to an Elvis concert but he actually died before the concert happened. She still has the ticket somewhere, I’m gonna see if we can find it.
Good episode, but I was a bit disappointed when you didn't at least mention a live album called "Having Fun with Elvis on Stage" which is basically just a bunch of out-of-context snippets of stage banter from Elvis's live shows and no music. It was released by his manager, and it was swiftly taken out of print by Elvis himself.
EDIT: Just clarifying that the album was released in 1974, when Elvis was still alive.
15:40 Proof that cousins shouldn’t breed.....
I Can't Believe it's Not Elmer's!
The last two songs sound like The Smothers Brothers doing a spoof.
Otherwise, this was a very tough Archive to watch.
Why would you include the word "uh" in the transcripts?
Because if Ebbis said it, you include it.
"I believe Elvis Presley died in … soul on August 16, 1977", as in his literal soul, or a snarky comment on what most people think of this phenomenon? The Swedish "impersonator" from the intro, if you can call him that, butchers the words of "Jail House Rock" so badly that there is no way of saying you believe his performance to be merely singing the song with a Swedish accent with a straight face. If somebody can be so bad at imitating Elvis so shamelessly, his soul, in a certain sense, might as well have died.
I think real hound dog would sound better. I wonder how many people have hound dogs named Elvis
Akiko wada was best known in the west for singing the Japanese version of the theme to Metal Gear Snake Eater made a Elvis compilation shortly after Elvis' death. It was really awkward because 1. She sings them in English and after listening to it the first few seconds you could tell her grasp for our mother tongue wasn't first class. 2. They changed some of the song lyrics to make it more appropriate for a female to sing however they didn't change all of them and I remember in one of the covers she was singing about longing for some girl (don't remember the name of the song). But the album is cheesy and right up your alley and as soon as I come back from vacation I'll send you a copy
Elvis isn't dead hes just on a secret Island with JFK, Tupac and Biggie
I wonder how many elvis's are alive and well living in mental institutions? We have people that think they are jesus why not elvis?
