Major, major respect to the pilot and captain! I was a Surface Warfare Officer in the U.S. Navy for 12 years, and was navigator aboard a ship that was 438 feet long and 48 feet wide. Watching him make that turn and get lined up for those bridges is mind-blowing given his size. Wow!
That’s Captain Paul Berger and his Interlake princess. She’s my no. 1 girl. I live in Silver Bay MN having moved from a Duluth in a place that overlooked the harbor and canal. The MM is my wind magnet. She is one tough lady but her captain is outstanding.
We are blessed to live in today's world of affordable high resolution cameras, drones and free internet content. I mean where on the TV world you would expect such a marvelous, fantastic view of theses giant lake ships in cold winter ? This was epic to the highest level.
I was a Quartermaster aboard the USS Lexington, in 1971. We had to go into Mobile Bay, in Mobile, AL, to get aa refitting of piping throughout the ship. After getting hung up on a couple of sand bars and having to backup, to refloat, we made it into the docks. Once there, they wanted us to back iin. In trying to make the turn, the tugs pushed us into one of the old docks and we destroyed it. They were going to build a new one anyway. Destruction, compliments of the US NAVY.
@@DoorCountyDronebyMarkEvenson Hi Door. My only complaint was that I could actually see the entire vessel frame by frame. Is there a longer vessel :-) Great post. Many thanks.
Stunning drone footage. Y'all nailed it. This really shows the perspective of how large these ships are and what tight spaces they have to maneuver through. Add in the ice and you have serious drama. Nice production. Appreciate the radio calls. Only quim is that the music was a tad loud. Really good job. Thank you.
I just noticed the length of the Miner and it's snailpace speed through the bridges is like waiting at a RR crossing for a slow moving mile long freight train.
WOW is that' must be something to see. Man those ships are huge. We go to Door County frequently but we never get to see the ships coming in or going. Would love to see that. GREAT footage.
I was the first vehicle on the first bridge waiting, not knowing it was coming through until I reached the bridge and it started lifting. What a surprise :)
Chapeau à l'équipage, c'est une manoeuvre difficile surtout à vide avec la prise au vent. J'imagine que par fort vent latéral, même avec des propulseurs d'étrave, c'est impossible.
I would think there is potential for significant wind load on the sides of those ships. That is, I bet they are hard to control in tight spots like this on a windy day.
Man I don't understand how that ship doesn't bump the sides of those tight quarters when there's wind. 1000' feet of steel sides are basically a gigantic wall to catch the wind
They do have bow thrusters and sometimes stearn thrusters to help them. The Mesabi Miner only has a bow thruster. They also have to deal with currents through the channel. If the wind is to much they may have a tug or two help them out. Thanks for Watching!!
@@DoorCountyDronebyMarkEvenson No problem! And I hope I didn't come across critical, it's more amazement in how skilled the captain & crew are! I have a hard time with a 20' boat in high winds lol
super!!! please write what this vessel is for, what is the big lifting boom for? I watch your videos very often, but I can’t understand what this ship is transporting. very grateful if you answer.😊
I have an extremely dumb question, but please don't be too rough on me for asking it..... what do the bridge operators do all winter when the lake is basically iced over? Are there icebreakers going through? Just asking.
The Coast Guard icebreaker Mobile Bay is stationed in Sturgeon Bay and will help keep the channel somewhat opened all winter so the various boats can be moved around during the winter. It also works in the bay of Green Bay to keep it opened for ship traffic that runs down the bay into the city of Green Bay
Cool watching her come through the bridges and the far one closing behind her.
Great post, really gives a perspective of the size.

That's called threading the needle. I'm sure that Captain been there, done that a time or 2 or 3
Yup. They get lots of practice threading the needle. When the Mesabi Miner goes through the Soo locks it only has 30 inches of clearance on each side.
That's impressive

that is a large ship in a not so large space!
Yes
I would think there is potential for significant wind load on the sides of those ships. That is, I bet they are hard to control in tight spots like this on a windy day.
Yes they can act as a big sail. They might have to get a tug assist if it is to windy. Thanks Again!!
The key is powerful bow and stern thrusters.

Talk about threading the needle!!! Wow.
Wow!
No room for error on a ship that large/long
I'd assume there absolutely must be bow thrusters in a ship of that length. ?? Can't imagine rudder alone.
Yes, both bow and stern thrusters.

2 Miller Lites from that bridge being gonzo.
I'd hate to be on my way home, having to poop, when that thing comes along, and the bridge opens. Yikes.
that ship has such a blunt front end,
it should be more angled
Nope. The ships are designed for carrying capacity .
