The mount is perfect for me coming from Canon 5D, I was waiting for a good 4K Camera in my price range and was Just about to buy the BMPCC 4K was only hesitant cause of MFT, but now this is my answer. I am still waiting for the "Gotcha" on this camera. Right now the WORST thing I can see about this camera is it isn't Full Frame... and that not that big of a deal for me.
I think that's exactly what they CEO said on the live stream. They felt that those with the old 2.5k machine never really got an upgrade. Those guys are all sitting on old Canon EF glass and not wanting to move down to M43., understandable. A lot of those guys, even guys running Sony FS5s and stuff, even like Panny EVA-1 guys, anyone running true cinema cameras with EF glass has to look at this camera as a viable, economic replacement.
@@BlackWarriorLures Okay but ... Why don't these guys with a lot of EF glass just buy a metabones to go with the bmpcc 4K ? That solution actually gives you the equivalent of a bigger sensor even than the "native" EF mount with super 35 of the 6K, thus more wide angle and more bokeh ... Honestly i would still buy the 4K over the 6K even if i only had EF glass !
@@billyboy_45 Good point, and that's where I have settled after thinking about this a lot more. I use nothing but old FD glass, when it comes to adapting glass M43 is still king. Thanks as always for awesome video! Loving the new studio, and the GhAlex rolloff. :))) Pocket 6K’s major issue in practice is the same as all pocket cameras - if you want raw etc and are happy to use a big rig then you’re most likely going to want other pro features like built-in ND filters and 100% reliability. So many “points of failure” in Pockets! But great for random broll :) Also, 13 stops isn’t enough for scripted pro stuff - in my experience. And Blackmagic color science is still terrible compared to Alexa
Yeah, it would be great if they went with a leica L-mount but they didn't because *check out the heatsink design, you will understand why, and also if they went with short flange distance mount they have to redesign the whole body for heat dissipation which increase the cost. Since they went with similar body, they can shave and replace 30% of BMPCC4K for the new mount and not have a new production line for manufacturing this product* Also if they redesigned the camera, it will look like that new camera from sigma. Using a 1.33 times anamorphic lens or maybe setup will make this camera an 8k camera.
Caleb, you up for upgrading your BMPCC 6K to almost full frame (1.1 crop factor) in the future? A Magicbooster by LucAdapters, specifically made for the BMPCC 6K will hopefully be out in November this year. Plus it gives an additional stop as well, so better at low lights for sure. Just that it won't support exclusive EF-S lenses like the Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 completely (vignetting). We will have to use full frame EF lenses. Link: www.newsshooter.com/2019/08/13/lucadapters-magicbooster-for-the-bmpcc-6k
Sorry. Had the go with thumbs down for the clickbait title. That seems like a personal preference more than a problem. "Huge problem with iphones... they dont use android"
I think the reason for the EF mount is that the flange distance allows Blackmagic to have all those big cooling slots. A shorter flange distance would not allow for those and the heat generated from the bigger sensor and higher CPU power used to process and store the high resolution stream needs to get out in some way.
Ding ding ding, we have a winner! Lol. You can see the bigger heat sink and hear the bigger fan on it. I would rather have that and ef lenses then it overheat while shooting 6k raw. It would have been nice to put PL lenses on it, but let's be honest there is a lot of ef glass and it's going to be what 90% of people put on the camera, even if they could PL.
If you have to use a bigger mount to achieve efficient cooling, then that's simply bad engineering. Look at what Sigma has done with the cooling of the new FP camera. Their solution is genius compared to this.
@@rketv No, but you should definitely watch their Japanese press conference or the short animation they made to show the design of the heatsink. In my mind the cooling solution they came up with in such a small body is pretty cool. ua-cam.com/video/3yrcJOr7lyg/v-deo.html

Yeah I'm loving these clickbait titles. Just went into the comments to find what the issue is, decided it wasn't at all an issue for me and closed the tab once I left a dislike
That's BS. I'm tired of people saying a cinema camera BLAH BLAH BLAH. A video camera is a video camera and it should have in camera stabilization and good auto focus. The REAL reason BM did not design it in is due to market segmentation. They are just going after a certain market segment and saving some re-design costs at the same time, while not directly competing with Sony and Panasonic. Why do you think Sony and Panasonic (GH5) don't come up with their own Raw recording cameras?
@@Pierrelager There are professional cine lenses that are EF mount. Canon has a line and so does Tokina. For example: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/981928-REG/canon_ef_cinema_prime_5.html
@@Pierrelager DSLR mount? Do you know how many CINE lenses that cost $8k use EF mounts? It's THE MOST COMMON lens mount between Canon, Sigma, Xeen, Zeiss (DSLR AND Cine lenses). It WAS clickbait, he changed the title and his argument was a terrible one.
@@thecritic2822 I dont Understand why the fact that a lot of expensive lense are EF mount prouves that is a good choice for a mordern camera. The aim of a pocket camera is to be as pratical as possible. So use a mount with a big gap between the sensor and the flange means that you have bigger lense for the same focal lenght. And you can't adapt proprely every lens you want. What do you think about that ?
I'm confused by the mount concerns and by everyone saying it's easier to adapt to mirrorless - I use EF on my Ursa Mini pro and have never had issue adapting old vintage lenses and keeping full frame FOV w/ the magicbooster, etc. Everything that was recommended for and that I used on my mirrorless cams work on this one. Old c-mount lenses (though not FF), old minolta lenses, swirly bokeh lenses, helios, old 4x7 medium format lenses, etc. Magicbooster exists for Ursa Mini & Ursa Mini Pro cams which get FF FOV, so the same could be done here, possibly.
@@Watts24fps I just assumed I was missing something - even before the BlackMagic stuff ever came out, Caleb always said mirrorless was easier to adapt vintage lenses to (as do plenty of others) so I've just been trying to figure out why. The only issues I've run into is a couple lenses have manual aperture levers for film cameras that would block/break the mirror on DSLRs, but I don't even have lenses that do that, or the adapters keep those in check.
Correct me if I'm wrong but you dismiss the merits of a focal-reducer WHILE dismissing the EF-mount because it restricts the use of a focal-reducer? Huh?
His point isn't too far out. A Leica L mount, custom mount with adapters, Sony E Mount would all provide the same ability to use EF mounts (with adapter) as well as all of those systems. Most people will be fine being EF only, but a simple different choice would have opened a lot more possibilities.
@@HotRodHippie I wouldn't call a custom mount a simple different choice. That would take a ton of engineering hours and raise the price of the camera quite considerably. I think making it ef mount is the simples, easiest, and most desired outcome. There are a ton of people (Myself included) using the 4k version with a speedbooster who would much rather be using a native ef mount.
Regarding the EF mount: BM is not a licensee of Canon (as much as I know) which means they reverse engineered the EF mount pins to make the EF lenses work with this 6K Camera. In order to make other lenses work out of the box or to create a BM adapters for the lenses you mentioned - they need to reverse engineer many of them and there aren't lots of docs about it. Perhaps the next version of this camera will support other lenses (after all, if you look at the camera closely, you'll see that most of it is just like the 4K, they replaced the board with the sensor and the front part, venting , and the firmware, everything else remains the same).
EF mount is so widely used that I don’t think anyone should be fretting about BM falling in line with what high-end cine camera manufacturers have been doing for years. This is simply them saying: “hey, you should put big-boy lenses on our new big-boy camera.”
I am a canon shooter with a stack of glass so the 6K excites me! Will probably also continue with Prores as I primarily edit FCPX. I will order the 6K but also keep a 4K as back up/second camera. Great video, thanks
Been doing alot of reading. There is suppose to be a speed booster by a company called LucAdapter (I think)... also a plugin by another company to let you edit braw in premier.
Yes, I was gonna leave the same comment, there is a speedbooster for EF / EF-S in the words for this camera so that will help with the crop factor which is still a bit hefty.
The EF mount is its biggest selling point I think, I have a lot of EF Glas. There is one negative on this camera I think, and that is Battery Life, so you need to buy a lot of Batteries, which is an good mitigation. A thing BM Could have done better is Autofocus, but Me Thinks that is Minor. Comparing it to the R6 from Canon when I Read the Specs Canon R6 - you need to buy an adapter for your EF Glas - it doesn't do RAW - its more expensive - only 4K - Price - Overheating issues? + Good AF + Full Frame BM6K - Battery life - AF + 6K + RAW + Price + EF Mount + No Heat issues
It would have been great to see it with an L-Mount, but I wonder if the partnership between Leica, Panasonic, and Sigma might have been an issue there. Also, and this is PURE speculation on my part, but I wonder if having that extra flange distance makes it easier to cool the system down depending on how they've used that extra internal space. 6K raw is a lot to process, but I might be totally off on that haha! Really interested to hear your take once you've got the camera in hand!
Additional space for cooling is always nice to have but a full frame DSLR mount on an APS-C mirrorless system is just ... wrong. I thought about the L-mount, too. The one company that would probably not be happy with that would be Panasonic in my mind. Think about this beast going directly against the S1H with the same mount... On the other hand, blackmagic waiting lists are loooong. I gave up on the pocket 4k after 4 months.
@@noenken I'm not sure I understand: Why is it wrong to have a full frame DSLR mount on an APS-C mirrorless system? Canon entire cinema line is like this, as well. Is it the form factor you mean?
@@BlackWarriorLures Canon cinema cameras are not designed to be handheld. The Pocket 4k and 6k are. On the 4k you can use a 12-35 Panasonic and shoot documentary all day long with a very compact setup. On the 6k you can't. (Just as an example.)
So many haters. This is a great review, and I agree; an interchangeable mount would have been an incredible feature. That said, if you're going with any fixed mount, EF is the way to go.
Mine is on the way and I am happy with the Canon EF mount as I have 9 L lenses and won't need the metabones adapter. BUT because I also have the 4k I can take advantage of the update. BTW I hope you update your BMPCC video; I will pay for an update!
We just got ours yesterday. 2 other big things. 1) you can't shoot RAW in 4k or 1080p. That's ProRes only. 2) the premiere plugin that everyone is using doesn't support the new 6k raw yet (and I've even heard rumors that resolve is having issues with it at the moment).
If you are going to test boosters on the 4K in the future, please factor in the new Metabones specifically for it, especially the 0.64X positive locking EF mount. Not only does it make it fullframe equivalent, it adds a cine locking mount.
As an FCPX user the biggest detraction for me is all the BRAW only modes. I have to hope (in vain?) that Apple will support BRAW in the next update or, even as a P4K owner, consider moving to Resolve. 6K may open up better post stabilization options but that may hinge on rolling shutter though.
seecraig just use resolve as a color correction tool in post production, edit braw exported as anything else for reference, its really simple and just takes a few more steps
@@sebastianmorales6849 It's the "just takes a few more steps" that's a concern. I'd like to use BRAW in a fast turnaround environment. I settle for 6k ProRes but I doubt Blackmagic has any motive to do that in-camera.
I see your point about braw being the only format for the larger resolutions but if u are shooting 6K why would u want to out put as pro ress anyway when braw has way more flexibility in post, the only other reason i could see is for files size differences. But i feel like it would defeat the point of shooting 6k with out that flexibility. Could just be me tho
Caleb, you NAILED it with your criticisms. Blackmagic Design (and third parties) could have done SO MUCH with the EF flange distance if they hadn't baked it into the body. Keep up the great work!
Thanks Caleb. I have ordered the BMPCC 6K and hopefully it will arrive soon. When you do your review could you have a look at SSD's for us. Tom Antos had problems with frames dropping on his Samsung T5 SSD at 6K filming.
it doesnt changes the mount option. It's just an adaptors that goes inside the EF mount. Check your facts straight before posting bullshit. The problem with EF mount is the flange distance. So barely any lense option.
@@MsMoeb No other lenses? Perhaps you should check your facts too - I happily use my Pentax, Zeiss Contax, Tair, Mir, Helios, and Olympus lenses on the EF mount.
@@garyking4032 Not to mention plenty of cinema options out there like Sigma, Zeiss, Canon, etc. If you can afford something like Cooke's or master primes, why are you putting them on a DSLR in the first place?
@@MsMoeb There's about 130 million lenses in sirculation for EF mount, that's far more than for any other mount. There's lense for every imaginable situation, and for cheaper price too if that's what you want. And if you miss the full FoV from FullFrame lenses then you get yourself that adapter.
I'd really like to see what the camera is capable of? -That's what's most important to me . I appreciate your comments -the though I wouldn't describe the housing as a major issue for me personally. I'm really just interested in an "entry level" 6K cam/Lens.
The BMPCC 4K is almost impossible to get hold of in UK. There is no stock and waiting times at most retailers, or you can pay a big premium to get one sooner. I just wish BM had addressed the lack of 4K stock and ramped up production of those before releasing the 6K.
This is really the biggest fault, and should have been emphasized more. People still don't have the P4K yet, and here they are talking about a brand new camera and saying it's in stock now. Also look at how fast they got the G2 out, same thing really. It's as if they just aren't delivering the product that they have, yet they've developed two new cameras in the past year? Makes no sense.
great new for both blackmagic 4k an 6k users! thank you for sharing. one suggestion: voice level of speech was way too low in comparison to outro music.
No No No disagree, they have chosen the best mount, the EF mount and the best glass out there and all those vintage lenses on the EF mount just brilliant, I love Canon glass and this camera is just perfect for me, well done Blackmagic for this and keeping the price low, placed my order no gimmicks no see what I have got but sheer video quality at an amazing price, thank you
This is actually a great video camera for me, I’m a canon user thats looking to switch to mirrorless and don’t wanna buy a bunch of new lenses. This will be my new video camera!
So right. Just one thing: you still could be using M39 lenses on top of the EF mount 8:36. A few coins in M39toM42 and in M42toEF. But not FD, not MFT, not boosters...
I really like your reviews i really do. i've been following your channel for a long time now and i love your content. But just to be honest, don't you think you are actually being totally biased towards using EF-Mount because you are a user of Panasonic GH series. So that means you're implying that they should've gone for that. That is because you're actually using that yourself. Don't get me wrong but for normal consumers or you can say people who are on a tight budget, usually go with Canon. No matter what. So i assume majority of the people will definitely have Canon Lenses so it's a great choice to have as a EF-Mount in BMPCC6k.
You are definitely sort of right with the EF-mount. Maybe that was a mixture between BM-tradition, als they offered lots of cameras with EF-mount, and marketings-aspects. EF-mount is really an argument for many buyers, because they think of all their EF-glass. For me personally the 6K is a great addition to my BMPCC4K - I always felt the "need" for a seconds one, but I'm going to add the 6K version, simply because of the 6K. :)
Man everybody talks about Peter Mckinon (and I love him also) and forget about this dude! He is such a good presenter!! Awesome reviews also!! Thanks for this mate!
Great review Caleb! If I may ask, of of the other reviewers mentioned that Sony lenses can be adapted to bmcc4k, I am not aware of an adapter that can do that, do you know if there is one? Or people with a lot of Sony FE lenses should stick with A7S series.. What do you think? Thanks!
Fully agree with you regarding the mount. As a massive vintage lens user, I really need that mirrorless mount option to get the most out my lenses in a super35 sensor, therefore I probably won’t be buying one :(
People railing on the length of the video: blame UA-cam. Content less than 10 minutes for these creators is way less favorable to the algorithm. So if these content creators are going to make a living and continue being able to deliver really good channels, WHICH THEY SHOULD BE ABLE TO DO, deal with 10-minute videos. End of story.
I agree completely on the error in choosing to go EF-only. I keep my original Pocket for two reasons: its wonderful highlight roll off and its ability to use 16mm C-mount and all sorts of other vintage glass. But the updates to the current 4K sound exciting enough that I may pick one up in spite of their harsh highlights. Great channel, btw. You’re a highly trusted source of info.
Any idea where they get that sensor from? Even its no option for me because of the ef mount, i am curious to see the low light performance compared to the 4K. Is there any information out there regarding noise?
Were I to have the cash, the EF mount would put me off the 6K because I can't use my weird lenses. But that's not a problem. I'm not the intended market. The intended market is a more professional and dare I say it, more conventional, user. Are we forgetting that the 4K is hardly a poor camera?
Good point. When I saw the 6k I actually made me look at the P4k again because IO know I can easily adapt vintage lenses to M43. Maybe they thought those who want to adapt already had the "perfect" mount where adaptability was concerned. My guess, and the CEO mentioned this, they had tons of people asking for an EF mount, so they made an EF mount. For adapting lenses M43 is still king really. In other words this is what the 5Div should have been or what the 90D should be. It's almost like they're saying, "This is the camera Canon should be making, but we have to do it because they won't get off their butts for anything anymore."
I think the reason behind choosing legacy EF mount was to limit pocket 6K. Interchangeable lens mount is feature on more expensive Ursa Mini Pro G2 which they don't want to cannibalize obviously. It has option to swap stock EF mount for PL, B4 and F mount.
I have been thinking about getting this camera as a second camera for shooting church services to pair it with my xa50. I already have a number of EF L lenses, and a couple of ATEM switchers. Yes, it is over-kill resolution wise, especially since I would be using it in 1080p, but considering the compatibility with my switchers, multiple connections for audio, and all my existing lenses, and especially the price, this seems like a really good deal. The only thing I would be giving up is par focal zoom function like on my xa50. For a high quality video camera for my needs this seems very economical all things considered. I would love another xa50 but this bmpc6k is the same price with the ability to shoot at 120p. If you have a moment, I would appreciate your thoughts.
The EF mount is not bad to adapt vintage lenses, it is shorter than a lot of the other SLR mounts. There are adapters for Contax/Yashica lenses, Nikon F, Olympus OM etc. Rangefinder lenses won't work but still I think it is a very flexible mount.
MFT has been put on 1.5x before. ZCAM is working on making it work currently for their upcoming S6. It's possible and honestly would be great for this form factor.
@@FTGTapGod Ahh! That's good to know. It could be the best combo of all time. The "superM43" chips like the GH5S are getting so close to APS-C that it seems they should go ahead and jump to S35.
I have the G7, and it's pretty fantastic and you'd probably love it, but idk 10bit on the BMPCC4K is pretty fantastic. If you can get it used for a good deal, then it's super worth it. On the flip side, the G7 used is like $200-350, so maybe buy one of those now and sell it when you're ready to upgrade?
DSLR Video Shooter thanks for replying, and I was wondering if you could watch some of my videos, like the one about Cinestyle, and give me some feedback.
There actually is a speedbooster that is being made for this that goes inside and behind the EF mount in front of the sensor. I think it's called the magicboost. Not sure about the optical quality.
It's a $2500 camera and you want a "custom" interchangeable mount. It's not a high-end camera and is catered to indie filmmakers. It doesn't even have SDI, which I think is an even bigger issue. Canon EF mount is fine and most people already have plenty of lenses that will work and can upgrade from other cameras like the older BMCC 2.5k. Mirrorless lenses are just too new, not mainstream enough and lack options. You can also still get true cinema lens options such as Sigma, Canon, Zeiss, etc to mount. You want PL and want to throw Cooke S4's on? Get an adapter like the Ursa has (if they have one, which they probably do). There's a reason cameras like Alexa, RED and even the Ursa cost much more. You can't get everything. It's already disrupting the market where they can barely keep up with orders and I think people are nitpicking way too much. It's impressive AF! Go out and create and stop worrying so much about the technical aspects that literally won't affect 90% of indie filmmakers.
The mount you're looking for is exactly what they put on the Ursa Mini Pro. You can switch between EF, PL, B4 and F mount. My guess is that they want you to pay the $ for the higher end camera for that premium feature.
Have you heard of or looked into the announced Magic Booster from LucAdapters for this camera? He says he can get it to an estimated 1.1x crop!! With 0.64 XL Metabones, the pocket 4K gets to 1.22x, so that’s really promising! And hey, maybe Metabones will make their own!
Jean Pierre I was going to mention this too! Caleb says that you can’t use a focal reducer on EF but yeah apparently you can, as LucAdapters can do it. But (a huge but) it’s still a crowdfunding thing so far. LucAdapters has shown they can do it tho - with their Ursa one.
@@mrtobycook Yeah, it's going to start as a Kickstarter, but from his posts, it seems he's dead set on making it regardless lol. His pocket 6k is on the way apparently, so we should be hearing more soon! I also have to point out, that Caleb might be right, because the Magic Booster isn't a mount screw on like the Metabones, it goes inside the EF flange...I'm really hoping Metabones is making their own solution as well, competition is always good!
I'm curious what the dynamic range will be when not filming in BRaw, it is a bigger sensor but claims to have the same 13 stops as the 4k. Missing that 6k 60fps in Braw sucks a bit lol.
You better save a bit to get more than 13 stops on 6K raw. There's Helium and Monstro from RED and that's pretty much it. Arri has large format sensor on their new Alexa series and its maximum resolution is 4.5K. Though there's no comparing RED's, BM's or any other cameras to Arri.
Elite Extremophile sure. I what i want is 13 stops in pro ress. So i’d just stick to 5.7k filming (which ever resolution has 60fps) rather than switching from 6k braw to a pro ress just to do slow mo.
Using an SLR mount on a mirrorless body makes no sense... funny thing is, the Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro has a swappable mount system - it does F/EF/PL/B4
That's what I don't understand. A swapable mount would have been better. They should have waited to launch this camera. It's like the jumped the gun really.
Great point about the mount. Would have been even more of a killer if it had an interchangeable mount option. But as it stands, it still is in a class of its own even with its short comings.
Have you thought about adding the new BM Video assist 12g to the BMPCC6K? It will let you now do 4K raw again and not just ProRes inside the camera. Sure, adding $995 but worth it, no?
The EF mount thing I imagine is a compromise they made not only because of potential cooling issues, but also because EF has a lot of cheap cine lenses that people will want to throw on - basically meaning for a majority of shooters there won't be an issue with buying a plethora of add-ons to use the types of lenses that they most commonly use. That said though, I don't see how it would be impossible to create a speedboosters for this mount, though I also imagine it'll be a little while before we can start using Mamiya lenses at their full width.
The cinematography/photography community is so toxical on here and it's funny how people dislike someone's own opinion because it's different from theirs. Caleb is one of the most unbiased review on the internet you can find. Give him a break.
The way you did the multiple budget cameras for starters. Could you do a middle to upper end one? Like 700$-1500$ of cameras for intermediate - experienced .
Blackmagic did the same thing when they went from the MFT BMCC2.5K to the EF BMPC4K (went to a s35 sensor, higher res, EF mount, same body). No-one really cared, besides the fact that they lost a stop of dynamic range. However, in this one the DR is the same, lots of people use canon glass. A speed booster isn't a necessity, especially with a larger Super 35 sensor.
Considering your opinion on EF-mount, I'd actually be really interested to hear your opinion on native MFT glass, since it's also not adaptable. Especially since I feel like the options for MFT cinema glass are starting to get really interesting, with the Fujinon MK zooms now in native MFT mount, Vazen is making native anamorphic lenses, etc.
Hey Caleb, a general question if thats OK. I see you use the nucleus nano on your rigs, and i recently purchased one and had a qustion. When calibrating the motor never seems to bite properly with the gear rings , and i suspect its the rings as they are not the best, so it never really calibrates properly.Do you have any recommendations for rock solid rings that work great with it? Many thanks , and all the best.
Thank you for this review Caleb. I get your point about the mount, however I believe EF is a better option given the large amount of cheap EF lenses I feel this is a very flexible option.
There’s actually a focal reducing array coming for this camera, it’s not a lens mount, it just sits in front of the sensor wedged in for a 1.1x crop, go look at newshooter.com. I wish they used the RF mount so we would use the variable NDs, as if it had internal ND. That’s what the Red Komono is going to do
I saw somewhere that some company announced they will be making a speedbooster for the 6K that sits inside the mount. Sorry I don’t have more info. My main concern is actually the data rates, is there fast enough media available for 6k BMRaw?
I'm a big fan. Keep going strong; your channel is great. I have purchased lots because of your videos. So you do contradict your self on the speedbooster. You tell us how the booster with the extra optic is making images less sharp, but you say make make the mount closer for all of these converters at the end. It just seems a little back and forth at the end. It's just hard to nail down what your ideas are for the new camera that could have been changed. 5:24 (W/O SPEDB) 8:50 (Focal Reducers) Aren't Focal Reducers Speedboosters. I'm a big fan. Not trying to be neg.... just trying to understand. I know how hard it is to make videos and deal with the comment section. Just want to know your opinion.
Last lol I did not know it was a contest 😂 @DSLR Video Shooter are you going to get the BMPCC 6K and if so are you keeping the 4k or do they have a trade in where you can get like Half off or just pay the Difference of what the new one cost that would be cool if they Give you 1,000.00 to 900.00 USD off that would be cool because they can sell the 4k used and make there money back
Thought the Problem would be the price or the battery life with the New sensor. I mean 6k or even 2.8k in 120 should need more Power to be handled. So i would expect a shooting time around 20 to 30 Minutes.
Thanks for the review. I just dont understand why nobody can really get it right. It seems like if they brought a bunch of you pros together to brainstorm you could make the ultimate camera! Instead we consistently get "almost" every time there is a new release.
Hi Caleb, my 6k arrives tomorrow, after cage and power what is the must have accessory for this camera? I have a $500 budget, what would you buy for it?
only porblem i see is ef mount (it should be eos-r mount or their own swap-able) . pro res is stupid option and should be gone completely from any raw capable camera, so i dont mind it. braw is AMAZING. also for your mention of croping in different resolutions, did you even know how arri and red are doing it? exactly the same. there is no full sensor raw readout for different resolutions in raw on any camera. only baked codecs can do it. Not to mention those options (red, arri) cost as an average house.
The part of the video you're all looking for: 7:05

The mount is perfect for me coming from Canon 5D, I was waiting for a good 4K Camera in my price range and was Just about to buy the BMPCC 4K was only hesitant cause of MFT, but now this is my answer. I am still waiting for the "Gotcha" on this camera. Right now the WORST thing I can see about this camera is it isn't Full Frame... and that not that big of a deal for me.
I think that they were forced to use EF mount because they needed more space for cooling system.
The EF mount is a real plus for those of us waiting to upgrade from the BMCC 2.5k EF.
PLus I'd rather buy a pair of P4k for the price of a single P6k.
I use one of the cheaper glassed adapters from China. It puts right at super35 and couldn't be happier.

Yeah, it would be great if they went with a leica L-mount but they didn't because
*check out the heatsink design, you will understand why, and also if they went with short flange distance mount they have to redesign the whole body for heat dissipation which increase the cost. Since they went with similar body, they can shave and replace 30% of BMPCC4K for the new mount and not have a new production line for manufacturing this product*
Also if they redesigned the camera, it will look like that new camera from sigma.
Exactly!
@@RedHatMedia You got your Sigma FP already and tested it?
@@rketv No, but you should definitely watch their Japanese press conference or the short animation they made to show the design of the heatsink. In my mind the cooling solution they came up with in such a small body is pretty cool. ua-cam.com/video/3yrcJOr7lyg/v-deo.html

Ha! Thanks.

@@thecritic2822 Yep..
Exactly, same here. I use the Ursa Mini Pro the same way. Nit-picking i guess to bring some conflict to such an impressive camera?
@@Watts24fps I just assumed I was missing something - even before the BlackMagic stuff ever came out, Caleb always said mirrorless was easier to adapt vintage lenses to (as do plenty of others) so I've just been trying to figure out why. The only issues I've run into is a couple lenses have manual aperture levers for film cameras that would block/break the mirror on DSLRs, but I don't even have lenses that do that, or the adapters keep those in check.
That being said the RF mount instead of EF probably would've been a smarter move.
As someone with a full complement of EF-mount lenses, I'm glad BM did this. I'm sick of needing adapters to shoot video on Mirrorless cameras.
Correct me if I'm wrong but you dismiss the merits of a focal-reducer WHILE dismissing the EF-mount because it restricts the use of a focal-reducer? Huh?
lol great point. if you want a model with an adaptable mirrorless mount, they have already thought about that... for $1295...
Focal reducers and mount adapters are not the same thing
@@avclaudiom I didn't make a claim; I posed a question.
I would argue that high-end cine cameras default to PL. The middle ground seems to be all EF or E-mount, though.
I am a canon shooter with a stack of glass so the 6K excites me! Will probably also continue with Prores as I primarily edit FCPX. I will order the 6K but also keep a 4K as back up/second camera. Great video, thanks
Ha, your bug is my feature. EF lens mount by default is exactly what I've wanted from a prosumer video camera, as that's where my lens investment is.
It's not thaaaat good software, I've edited with it the last 4 months and it's a lot slower than in DaVinci

The EF mount doesnt bother me at all
EF glass is common and cheap. This is a massive benefit for me and many others as we already have tons of EF lenses.
Felix Black correct may get this instead of the R5/R6.
The firmware update will also finally bring controll on a gimbal, esecially focus controll. I think that a huge deal!
Comparing it to the R6 from Canon when I Read the Specs

@@noenken I gotcha.
It doesn't make it full-frame equivalent. 0.5 would.
You want to use different programs with no in between, it doesn’t exist. Don’t shoot raw if you are not using it
I hear ya!!! Really hoping to see Braw supported in FCPX as well.
It’s probably coming very soon on a next FCPX update.
That's what you think BM really screwed up on?
LOL
Thanks Caleb. I have ordered the BMPCC 6K and hopefully it will arrive soon. When you do your review could you have a look at SSD's for us. Tom Antos had problems with frames dropping on his Samsung T5 SSD at 6K filming.
Your main problem just isn't true. Google LucAdapter Magicboost.
it doesnt changes the mount option.
And if you miss the full FoV from FullFrame lenses then you get yourself that adapter.

gotta love watching videos about 6k cameras in 360p

Fully agree with you regarding the mount. As a massive vintage lens user, I really need that mirrorless mount option to get the most out my lenses in a super35 sensor, therefore I probably won’t be buying one :(
The 4k on a speedbooster has a smaller crop factor than the 6k. 1.3 to 1.6....thats very significant

End of story.
and yet, people like you also complained about the mirrorless mounts on the BMPCC and BMPCC 4k.
Sony... I think (color science)
The mount choice is probably due to licensing. M43 is no good for 1.5x so choice may of been limited.
MFT has been put on 1.5x before. ZCAM is working on making it work currently for their upcoming S6. It's possible and honestly would be great for this form factor.
@@FTGTapGod I thought they dropped the S35 M43 mount?
I wonder about the licensing too. But it seems they could have gotten a license for the L mount at least, but who knows.
@@BlackWarriorLures I believe last time I checked they dropped saying it's going to be an official option, but they are continuing to test.

Hey man would you think that I should buy the Panasonic g85 or save up and get the pocket 4K?
Flip out , price and stabilization would be the only reasons I'd go with the G85 at this point.
An EF mount isn't a problem. It makes it more accessible. If you have such a problem with it, get a converter.
When is the firmware update for the Pocket 4K supposed to drop? I am very excited about 2x anamorphic, and the ability use my 16mm lenses. Thanks!
4k 120fps...
That's what we needed
then go zcam
@@AllThingsKen have you heard of Kinefinity
Doesn't that RED Raven do 4K 120?
@@FranklinReid_ Red Raven fully kitted is over 14k.
@@DirectorIllyRock zcam would be the best option. I just preordered the 6k version
I agree with you
Using an SLR mount on a mirrorless body makes no sense... funny thing is, the Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro has a swappable mount system - it does F/EF/PL/B4
That's what I don't understand. A swapable mount would have been better. They should have waited to launch this camera. It's like the jumped the gun really.
Yeah - this came out of nowhere.
Great point about the mount. Would have been even more of a killer if it had an interchangeable mount option. But as it stands, it still is in a class of its own even with its short comings.
also an advantage with EF (versus another mount which requires adapters )is autofocus
Yeah, but is blackmagic's autofocus even going to come close to Canon autofocus.
Have you thought about adding the new BM Video assist 12g to the BMPCC6K? It will let you now do 4K raw again and not just ProRes inside the camera. Sure, adding $995 but worth it, no?
It was a marketing move! Black Magic just made a better video camera for Canon users than Canon ever could at that price!
Thanks. So how the autofocus works? Is it any good??
The EF mount thing I imagine is a compromise they made not only because of potential cooling issues, but also because EF has a lot of cheap cine lenses that people will want to throw on - basically meaning for a majority of shooters there won't be an issue with buying a plethora of add-ons to use the types of lenses that they most commonly use. That said though, I don't see how it would be impossible to create a speedboosters for this mount, though I also imagine it'll be a little while before we can start using Mamiya lenses at their full width.
Thanks for the review. I didn't understand if the 120fps filming in HD is still cropping the sensor or uses the full frame?

Worst title I've seen on one of your videos.
he changed it, I completely agreed...but at least he changed it.
@@thecritic2822 sorry, what was the title before?

Can you please do a video or point me in the direction of some anamorphic lens reviews Etc that could be used with the pocket 4K? Thanks

Since I recently bought a set of Rokinon EF lenses, I’m super glad they went with the EF mount.
I 100% agree, wrong mount... a more adaptable mount is what is needed.
Speedboosters AND variable ND adapters (like ND Throttle) are now out the door...
there is a speed booster by Luc adapter. It turns this 6k cam to a 1.1 crop factor.
Last lol I did not know it was a contest 😂 @DSLR Video Shooter are you going to get the BMPCC 6K and if so are you keeping the 4k or do they have a trade in where you can get like Half off or just pay the Difference of what the new one cost that would be cool if they Give you 1,000.00 to 900.00 USD off that would be cool because they can sell the 4k used and make there money back
LOL
I totally agree, I wish they went with a mirrorless mount. I really don’t understand their logic with the EF
Thought the Problem would be the price or the battery life with the New sensor. I mean 6k or even 2.8k in 120 should need more Power to be handled. So i would expect a shooting time around 20 to 30 Minutes.
Hey Caleb! Are you doing a review/update for the 6k Pro?
Thanks for the review. I just dont understand why nobody can really get it right. It seems like if they brought a bunch of you pros together to brainstorm you could make the ultimate camera! Instead we consistently get "almost" every time there is a new release.
Hi Caleb, my 6k arrives tomorrow, after cage and power what is the must have accessory for this camera? I have a $500 budget, what would you buy for it?

I really think you should do a tutorial on the BMPCC 6K. Love your teaching style. You did a good job on the GH5
only porblem i see is ef mount (it should be eos-r mount or their own swap-able) . pro res is stupid option and should be gone completely from any raw capable camera, so i dont mind it. braw is AMAZING. also for your mention of croping in different resolutions, did you even know how arri and red are doing it? exactly the same. there is no full sensor raw readout for different resolutions in raw on any camera. only baked codecs can do it.
Not to mention those options (red, arri) cost as an average house.
