its now fixed with a beta Google play services apk i just downloaded , www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/google-play-services/google-play-services-11-5-05-release/google-play-services-11-5-05-038-163818272-android-apk-download/
Thank you soooooo much. I got rid of my wifi to safe money living in a metropolitan area, and working 12hr shift. I have been trying to utilize my hotspot/unlimited network for months now. Thank you again for helping me continue to get out of debt. Awesome video!!! 😍👍🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Thanks, this is exactly what i was looking for and it worked. Just used my old phone (which has no service) and my new phone's hotspot. The only extra step i had to take was download the chromecast app on my old phone.
Success. Initially I had a little trouble but I put on my thinking cap and figured it out. I could not have done without this tutorial though. Other videos had me lost in the sauce. Thank you so much!!! Many blessings to you and yours ol chap.
You my friend are a legend! !! Just gone on holiday and my 7 yr old girl really wanted to watch the 1st jurassic park which I have on my tablet and couldn't connect to chromecast. .....until I watch this video! Thanks dude x
This is just what I was looking out for.. wanted a tutorial where I can connect my Chromecast when I don't have working WiFi and only my mobile data.. great thing of this video is a guest mode explained which was missing in the other videos which I watched to have a solution to my problem.. I m now happy..such a great video and explained in detail.. cheers!! Thank you
Thank you so very much. Very straight forward. I am going to try this tomorrow. I knew there had to be a way to use my mobile data, I would have never have guessed to use a second phone, DOH! The wifi signal in this house is too far from the router. You are a golden God!
Thanks for the video. Searched the internet and this is by far the best instructions on how to use your phone without Internet connection. Now I can use my chromecast.
Sweet! Thanks man! I only had 1 phone so I followed the exact same steps but instead of using your wife's phone I used a PC to setup the Chromecast. After that I use my Xperia Z3+ on hotspot mode and it works flawlessly! Thanks again
superb video jeo george... from last couple of days i have been searching ways on internet to connect cc through mobile but no one was as clear as you are in the video... thank you so much... you are a saviour for people like me who dont have router at home... i hope this same method will work on cc 2 and updated cc app called 'google home' ;-)
hey man thanks for the upload. Wanted to ask...once using cellular data will it be noted as nornal data or tethering data ? tethering data is limited with all data plans within the UK
Unfortunately, I do believe that, in this arrangement, it would be considered tethering data. UNLESS... you do screen mirroring of all data from your phone onto your Chromecast. If you mirror your screen to your TV as an alternative to using the cast function within Chromecast-ready apps, then I "think" this would be normal data and not tethering data. My particular carrier, here is the US, does not distinguish between the two types, so I've never had the need to find out for myself. So, I can't be definitive in my answer to you, but I hope you are able to find out for sure!
thank you for the help! I was trying to connect with my cellphone no result then found your video and even though I don't have a second cell I was able to do it with my tablet.
You are welcome. My wife and I were just in Costa Rica last week, and we stayed in a cabin with no wifi--only a weak cellular signal. In a few short steps, we were able to hook up the Chromecast to the tv in the cabin and watch the videos we had just shot on our trip. Even though all I wanted to do was simply mirror from phone to Chromecast, an internet connection from a wifi network has to be detected by the Chromecast (why, I don't exactly know), so the technique in the video was essential in getting this screen-mirroring set up to function properly.
one more thing, technically you will have to have a data connection to your phone in order for this technique to work properly, and we all know how expensive that can be in a foreign country if not properly done. Let me know if you need help deciding how to obtain cellular data while in Mexico without breaking the bank (if you haven't already).
Great vid for solving my problem...I recently bought a 7 Series BMW with Executive seating and rear mounted monitors. I have DirecTV/AT&T with unlimited data plan and Hotspot capability on my iPhone 7+ and did not want to pay another cent just to turn on BMW's Hotspot service via AT&T. So ur vid helped me to utilize Chromecast via my iPhone's Hotspot and project content from my iPhone Apps to my rear monitor via the HDMI port. Fantastic setup...however, Netflix requires me to enter the Chromecast Pin number each time I start the car to watch vids thru Chromecast...how do I turn this off? Hula, UA-cam, etc. don't ask for the Pin...Also, turning on my rear Media option and selecting HDMI automatically connects to my Hotspot. any who...great job presenting ur material...I used my wife's iPad and my iPhone to set up...tried several weeks to figure this out until I came across ur vid...thx
Kevin Seibert question, you wouldn't be mistaking the NETFLIX PIN for the Chromecast PIN, would you? I know that if I've set parental controls on Netflix, I have to enter a pin Everytime I want to watch anything on Netflix...
Thank you for this video, I have tried for a year to connect my devices to my tv. It was clear and easy step by step instructions to follow. Two questions "how connect or cast other devices? " such as the second phone used for initial chromecast setup? Does the Wi-Fi. or hotspot have to be turned on in order to cast? Thank you again for the video God's Blessings
Geraldine Bryant yes, for Chromecast to work it has to be connected to a wifi at all times, whether through your home wifi router or a hotspot. this video is to show how to do the hotspot method. as long as the hotspot is activated on the first phone, then ANY phone can be used to cast to the Chromecast. don't hesitate to ask if you're still having trouble with how to do that....
When you say that other phones can cast through the hotspot phone, do you mean only screencasting or also streaming from Internet (e.g. Netflix) through the hotspot? In the latter case, I'm assuming that would burn data.
Hrairoo555 right, casting from Netflix, etc from the second phone would use cellular data from the HOTSPOT PHONE (1st phone). interestingly, screen mirroring burns through the SECOND phone's Cellular data.
Hrairoo555 sorry, I meant only for apps requiring data. you could cast, say, a movie that is saved to your phone's onboard storage through screen mirroring, and that scenario would result in NO data being used from either of the phone's cellular data plans.
for screen mirroring only...is that what you are asking? it is possible to screen mirror with all data to your phone turned off, but you have to very briefly have your mobile data turned on in the beginning to initiate the screen mirroring. then, u can turn it off and leave it off to ensure that you are not burning through any of your data. I'm not entirely sure why a momentary internet connection is absolutely required for this, or if anyone has figured out a hack for this yet.
Sir, wondering if there is a chromecast app for windows 8/10 that could be used on laptop instead of the 2nd phone. Ie connect laptop to the phone hotspot, and then cast from the laptop?? Or maybe use a tablet as the casting instead of the 2nd phone?
Saxophonelady yes, you should definitely get this to work with the setup you describe. my wife has a Windows 10 computer and Chromecast is built in to her Internet Explorer browser right out of the box. my old work computer runs Windows 7 and you can even get that to cast to Chromecast if you install a plugin.
Would this procedure need to be repeated if I switch the Chromecast back to the WiFi connection, which would be my default? I'd only want to use the hotspot method while traveling and I might not have that 2nd phone for setup.
Yes, generally, the pairing procedure must be repeated everytime you want to change the wifi source that the Chromecast is paired to. But, since this video was made, there have been some changes to the Cast app (now called the Google Home app), which apparently enable you to change the wifi source within the app itself. There are other diy UA-cam videos that show how to do this.
Joe George Did not find any video pertaining specifically to switching between wifi and hotspot. What search terns should be used? Also, I now figured out although you said I can turn data off while casting, I had taken that to mean disable the hotspot. But now I know I have to leave the hotspot on and turn mobile data off!
Hrairoo555 right, the Chromecast "must" be connected to WiFi signal at all times. but, the wifi signal doesn't necessarily have to be connected to the internet.
Thank u thank u thank u!!!!!!! I already pay for 2 iPhones 1 iPad 1 Galaxy s5 1 tablet and $50 for hotspot on my account so I didn't want to buy wifi for $50+ a month and u just saved my wallet thank u again!
sure, you would just have to do a reset to the Chromecast and run the setup procedure with the different WiFi network. then, of you want to get into work with the hotspot again, you'd have to do another reset, rerun the setup procedure again, and so on.
To my experience, there has never been a problem. As long as your cellular data connection is good, it will function exactly like it would if you had it configured to a traditional landline wifi network...
JonashGrande balingan890 as stated in an earlier reply, I'm using Google Home app version 1.26.30.8. sounds like you are having some more advanced connectivity issues. Might I suggest contacting Google technical support. Thanks!
i hope this still works!! all the other comments are from 3/4 yrs ago. and every other video that i've found said that you cannot cast from the same phone that is producing the hotspot.
Hi. Bought CC 15 days ago and this method was working fine for me for 15 days. All of a sudden it stopped working with my mobile hotspot. I tried reset CC and repeat the process but it won't work. One time set up is done but does not work with my phone hotspot after that. CC shows as a connected device in my mobile hotspot but dosent cast/connects. Pls suggest. Thanks!
SUDHANSHU SARIN Same problem for me and other people too! Like in the video it worked for me for months. But now it seems that Googe have disabled this feature...
00grow I like to help but I haven't experienced the same problem so I'm afraid I can't be much help. only thing I could suggest is to try to reset everything, reboot everything, and try again (as you have). it hasn't been disabled for me and I can't think of a reason Google would purposely remove this ability, so there must be some glitch. sound more like an issue with your phone
BANG i found out.. All tricked by google... Google play services update is the culprit. Go to settings, apps, Google play services and uninstall updates to factory settings. Everything should come back and working!! Just don't update Google play services.. the side effect is that some apps like gmail and local cast won't run unless u update play services. Let's see if there is a workaround for that!
Yes you´re right! That solved the problem for me and other people too! But unfortunately (as you already noted) some important apps doesn´t work after that process... So i hope that google is going to fix this issue in the near future! - I can´t understand why the heck google is doing such a stupid move!? But okay perhaps this is only a little error... I really hope so! If not i must switch to amazon....
hello joe (: do you still reply to comments? I have a question. I understand that the secondary phone is used to activate the Chromecast but once the set up is ready.. can the device giving out the Internet connection be used as a hotspot AND be able to cast a screen on the tv at the same time or does the screen casting only available to the secondary phone? I plan on purchasing a chromecast for a family member /: please reply, I don't know who else to go to and I'm a bit embarrassed to ask this to an employee that will give me the "you can't afford wifi?" look.
dsaintil I agree, excellent alternative to bringing a dish to a tailgate (but only as long as the increased network congestion at a sporting event doesn't thwart your plan, so do keep that in mind.)
Just out of curiosity, will the functionality of this method be depending on the cell signal at all? Will this work if there no WiFi and very minimal cell service (very remote area in countryside)?
excellent question. connecting your Chromecast to your wifi hotspot will, in theory, have nothing to do with cellular service. but, getting content to stream to your Chromecast once you initiate a stream to your Chromecast will definitely be affected.
@Joe George Why it needs a data connection? We have all the hardware devices that we need - chromecast , mobile with hotspot and the TV ? It is only between my TV and my mobile right ? What role does a data connection play here ? How much of data is required to play, say a 700MB movie from my mobile to the TV ? (Data Connection being so costly than a wifi)
G lakshmeepathi hello, not sure I understand your question fully so bear with me. the data connection is simply what enables your mobile phone to be connected to the internet. if you want to cast content locally-stored on your phone, no data will be used, but if you want to play anything that it streamed directly from the internet, obviously a data connection is required.
Cool. You said no mobile data will be actually used for locally stored data. 1) Does it mean that even with my mobile data off (with just hotspot on)/no mobile network signal(with just hotspot on), mirroring would work ? or 2) Mobile data also should be on but since neglible amount of mobile data will be used even for locally stored media, we are under the assumption that mobile data is not needed at all ? By mobile data, I meant mobile internet from telecom providers. Sorry for the verbosity.
G lakshmeepathi yes, you got it...I think it's important to this of as this: streaming video from internet uses LOTS of mobile data. casting local content uses NEGLIBLE amounts (if any at all). thanks!
G lakshmeepathi forgot to mention... mirroring, IN THEORY, works with just a hotspot and mobile data turned OFF. your results may vary, though, as for some reason this confuses the chromecast, for reasons not completely known to me.
We have to keep trying different ways. With data On Off. Technology and compatibility is not so transparent. We often face a situation where we have to buy the product and then find out if it works/compatible with all the other devices and works the way we thought it to work !! All I wanted was to mirror "without internet". Let me try unplugging internet cable from wifi router as well with mobile data off. Thanks for your help. When you tried with hotspot, was your mobile data on?
Thank you for the video...I followed your instructions exactly as you explained and it worked for about a two weeks or so until I tried to reconnect it off my phone and its now saying " cannot find a nearby device". I'm confused...My hotspot network says its connected to my chromecast but I can no longer cast because it cannot find my chromecast device. It cast fine with the main phone I set it up with (friends phone) off my hotspot network but cannot do it with my own phone. I did the initial setup again and everything but still doesn't find the device off my phone. Any advice? Please help!!
Nynounchka Gracia unfortunately this error is due to a recent update to Google play services: www.androidpolice.com/2017/06/05/latest-google-play-services-seems-broken-casting-using-android-hotspot-wifi/
Can I do this for a friend and then delete the Google Cast app on my phone without his ( or my ) future casting being compromised ? Or, better still, just do a factory reset and reinstall my Chromebook settings ?
Piers Lort-Phillips absolutely. in your example, you can do anything at all to your phone you wish. it won't effect your friend's ability to control his Chromecast in anyway, if set-up was done correctly.
Sir mere pass HTC 816g mobile model hai....usme screen cast option b hai but screen cast krne se discount show krta hai.or phone ki screen LED me cast nhi hoti..please help me
hey joe, can u answer me a question i found out my mobile network gives me unlimited data to use on my phone but the hotspot feature has its own data tariff which is not unlimited. now if i get it all set up and as said in your video and i open youtube and press the cast button i found it uses the hotspot data and not my phones unlimited data and now I've expired all my use of hotspot for this month. if i like mirror the whole phone screen and then open youtube do you know if it will use the hotspot data for the video or the phones data? I'm guessing that using the cast button on youtube app itself just tells the chromecast a link to whatever youtube video you want to watch and the chomecast itself downloads the video via the wifi network its connected to (the hotspot) but I'm thinking if i just mirror the whole phone screen to the chomecast the youtube video would be downloaded to the phone itself using the unlimited mobile data i hope that all makes sense to you but i cannot try this myself until i can activate my hotspot again when i get more hotspot data
I follow what you are saying, and I completely agree with your logic. it's really a great question and one that I hope that someone with more knowledge on the matter will be able to step in and answer more definitively because I would only be speculating when I say that casting (using the in-app cast button) would set up a true tethering situation whereby the Chromecast connects directly to the internet courtesy of the phone's hotspot...in contrast to mirroring whereby the phone is just doing it's normal thing, and just HAPPENS to be duplicating its audio/visual output to an external monitor via a peer to peer WiFi connection. so, just like you said, determining which device is actually "doing the work" would, in my mind, determine if it is a tethering situation or not, and MY GUESS is that mirroring would NOT count against your tethering allotment. i myself just have a straightforward data plan where all data transfer is metered the same whether consumed by the phone or passed along through tethering, so i have to treat all usage the same i either of your scenarios. plans are different from carrier to carrier (obviously). and, i realize that some carriers dont offer mobile hotspot at all. but anyway, I certainly would like to defer to an expert that is familiar with your carrier's policies. Sounds like you are planning to set up your own experiment and will find out soon enough, so keep us updated!
by the way, I can attest to the fact that screen mirroring is 100% an interaction between the phone and the TV, and has nothing to do with the internet. it is a fact that you can trick your Chromecast to accept screen mirroring from your phone with your phone completely disconnected from the cellular network. just another reason why I'd find it hard to believe that your carrier would consider mirroring a situation where your Chromecast is data tethering using your phone's mobile hotspot.
+Joe George thanks for clearing this up for me. Yeah atm because i have no data left for the hotspot it doesnt even allow me to turn it on to try it out but hopefully using that method will get around the limited data issue. Cheers
+GeeVonMumble yes, there is one very quirky thing at play when you first try to initiate the mirroring. it's almost like a small amount of cellular data tethering is required just to get the phone to recognize the Chromecast as an available screen mirroring device to connect to. but once you initiate the screen mirroring, you can TURN OFF COMPLETELY your cellular data connection and the mirroring will continue to function all day long, until you disconnect the mirroring session. then to get it to mirror again, you actually have to turn your mobile data antenna back on momentarily to facilitate the connecting of the two devices again (but then, once again, can turn mobile data back off). I'm not really sure exactly what's at play here, but that's the way it is! weird. if you have completely exhausted all your tethering unfortunately you are out of luck, it would seem, until your next billing cycle.
chad gerstmeyer it is a built-in feature of the Google Home app itself (first option on the left-menu called "Cast screen / audio"). and, depending on your phone, it might be a feature that is a native feature of the OS, such as on a Nexus or Pixel phone.
I found it but nothing happens. I know Chromecast is working because I have watched a couple of UA-cam videos on TV. I just can't get it to display my phone screen.
Only thing I can think of is reboot everything and retry. You have definitely found the correct option -- should definitely work if the option is available in the app and the chromecast is configured and operating properly.
Thanks mani live in the boonies and only have my hotspot for Internet. I came home from buying the chrome cast and was annoyed because it wouldn't work. ( last night bought a rocket fish hdmi microusb which does not work with my tv 65" vizio 4k and or Asus Zenfone android) extra pissed when the chrome cast wasn't working. Anyway will try this tomorrow thanks for the video.
So once you use your mobile hotspot on device 1, to set up the Chromecast with device 2, you then go back to device one with hotspot and just mirror the screen. device 2 is never needed again correct? just for the initial setup? what if device 2 ever wants to mirror to the same chromcast dongle, can it just turn on hotspot and mirror like device 1 or will it need to be setup like the first time as well? hope that makes sense. 2 devices using the same Chromecast at any given point without the other device being present.
yes, all the scenarios you pointed out are possible. it must be noted, however, that the device producing the hotspot is always required. device 2 is strictly optional. if you want to use device 2 (or any other tablet or smartphone), just make sure it's WiFi antenna is turned on and it will detect the Chromecast and you should be able to connect without a problem. device 1 (hotspot) can work with the Chromecast completely on its own without any other device. it can work by mirroring the screen (if the device supports mirroring), or by casting with Chromecast enabled apps. basically, it is fully functional.
1.16.7 here. if you think an update has broken something, you could try to revert to an older version at apkmirror.com. that's what I use anyway, and sometimes that approach works for me.
i found a solution to the error when trying to use the chromecast without wifi, i have to turn it off (the t.v) and when turning on try to tap in wifi zone (tethering) that is working for me now.( Not always.
what app was you using to do this cause i was using google home i did everything right but when i tried to use my primary phone with the hotspot it said couldnt find my device to cast please help
Terrace Forney yeah, seems that a problem with an update to Google Play services is still preventing this method from working. supposedly, Google is working on a fix.
doing all these. do you still need to have mobile data avalible when you use your chromecast? lets say you go to a meeting room without mobile signals.
I haven't tried it with a complete lack of mobile data, since there has never really been a time I've done this setup with a very poor cellular connection such as the scenario you describe... But I do know that Chromecast, for whatever reason, requires a momentary cellular connection when first connecting to the hotspot. Right after first connecting, you can turn off the mobile data on the hotspot phone and still do screen mirroring (but of course, only screen mirroring will work with this method).
Not sure of the technical reasons for the delay; probably some type of wifi lag. It's never bothered me or, to be honest, I've never really noticed a lag until you just brought it up. I went back and watched the video and yes, looks like there is a delay of maybe a couple tenths of a second... probably pretty standard, but barely enough to notice. And by the way I have never noticed any audio/video synchronization problems which would be way more annoying than a screen-mirroring output delay. And yes, I just tested my new Chromecast (latest generation) and it too has a few tenths of a second lag.
+Joe George +Joe George Great, you've tested Chrome Cast 2. My questions will be related. I meant the screen mirroring without router, does that work for Chrome Cast 2 as well? What makes Chrome Cast 2 better than 1? Is the delay caused by not using any router? Wow so many questions i hope you're willing to answer those. Thanks for answering the previous questions.
+Blizaack ! all good questions. honestly, I have absolutely no idea what makes a 2nd generation better than gen 1. they both have performed identically for what I have used them for, which is UA-cam videos/occasional screen mirroring/occasional movie, etc. I think the wifi antenna is supposed to be better on the gen 2, such that casted videos start more quickly, but I haven't really noticed. I actually think the form factor of the gen 2 is uglier, too, with it not being a stick anymore, but who cares it is behind the tv. also, the lag actually exists no matter what the wifi source is (whether mobile hotspot, or in home router--in my house anyway)...
Galaxyskypro Sky the phone you are using to configure the Chromecast......talking about the "2nd phone".......I'm assuming the wifi antenna is turned on, correct? If it's not turned on, that's the only thing that could be preventing it from not "finding" the Chromecast.
I'm not an authority on this topic by any means, but, if your wireless carrier actually distinguishes "hotspot" data consumption from ordinary mobile data consumption... then (I think) any content delivered to your Chromecast would burn through your "hotspot" consumption.
thanks bro this really works but after 3 weeks it unconnected and now I can't do it anymore , it only start working for my other phone which have no data , do you have any suggestions?
Unknown User check out a few comments down (particularly a post by Sunhanshu Sarin) and some of the other recent comments; could have something to do with a recent Google Play Services update
Joe George yes it is the update I just tried uninstalling the google service updates and it work for 5 min till it said you need you update blah blah but thanks anyway for tip
every phone is different, but on my device (moto nexus6 with Android 6.0.1) it is under settings/wireless & networks/tethering and portable hotspot/setup wifi hotpot. there, I can set my own password for my device's hotspot the other devices will have to enter in order to connect.
Will this work if you have a Wifi Hotspot and a cell phone. I want to buy a hotspot for when we travel and use my chromecast with it. I don't want to use my phone as the hotspot. T-Mobile has a great deal with there hotspot 6gb per month with unlimited streaming of videos, NetFlix, UA-cam, Hulu and yada yada for $35 per mon.
yes, it sure will work. once you do initial set up of any Chromecast, it will thereafter always look for the wifi you set it up with. so, as long as you always have your mobile hotspot running when you fire up your Chromecast, it will function. you will then be able to use any phone with your setup.
Hi, what if I have a wifi in my office but a username and password log-in is required after connecting to the wifi in order to access to the internet? can I connect my phone to this wifi and setup the chromecast to connect to the same wifi network? Will it work for screen mirroring with a hotspot from a cell phone without any cellular data?
if I understand your question correctly, then yes, you can connect to your Chromecast this way in order to bypass the need to connect to your hotel's wifi altogether. in fact, I had this very issue in mind when I made this video. in most hotels, you have to enter the password on a landing page in your phone's browser rather than in your phone's wifi settings, and AFAIK, it makes it impossible to connect your Chromecast to the hotel's wifi. with my method, you never have to connect to the hotel wifi, so this is a non-issue. also, screen mirroring does not eat through your cellular data allotment other than whatever data you are consuming for the content. for example, if you are watching live sports streamed over cellular data, and mirror it to your Chromecast, then of course, you will burn through your data allowance from your carrier. but, if you have a movie SAVED on your phone's onboard memory, and want to mirror it to your Chromecast, then you will burn through NONE of your data, which is great.
now I realize you after talking about your office, and not a hotel, but my explanation above applies the same to hotels, office buildings, hospitals, or whatever.
im trying to do this with my laptop and phone, i turned on my mobile hotspot on my s6. and i downloaded for my laptop. once i get to the point that i am setting up the name of my chromecast, and configuring my laptop to the chromecast it trys to disconnect from the hotspot and conect to the chromecast, but that means there is no Internet connection!! ughhh im so frustrated =(
Hmmm, that's a strange one. The only thing can think of is reboot everything and try again. Especially your laptop. It sounds like that is where the problem is...
Joe George thanks so i set up everything like you said but i cant cast but i believe you ive done this before but with an android i would just turn on my hotspot and it would work but now that i got an iphone it wont work im not sure whats wrong
JonashGrande balingan890 sounds like your Chromecast is not paired to a wifi network or a hotspot. Either that, or your WiFi on your phone is turned off.
just depends on whether the app is Chromecast-ready. I don't subscribe to either of those in particular, so not sure. if an app is not Chromecast-ready, it can always be mirrored as an alternative.
I am attempting a first time setup of this method and cannot get it to work either. The chromecast is connected to hotspot and has guest mode enabled. (You don't mention guest mode PIN, and if that is important) I can cast from the "wife's" phone while it is connected to the hotspot, but cannot get the hotspot phone itself to even recognize that a chromecast is present. Anyone else have this problem (and a solution)?
I'm not sure if this is the solution, but by all the circumstances you described, it sounds like a the problem is with your hotspot phone. the chromecast sounds like it is doing its job, and obviously your wife's phone is working, etc. try rebooting your hotspot phone. based on your description, all was set up properly and this should work. by the way, guest mode pin is only applicable here if, say, your wife's phone wanted to cast something to the chromecast but is NOT connected to the hotspot.
Nukeboyt guest mode enables a phone to quickly connect to a Chromecast that is on a wifi network that can't be easily connected to by a guest, such as if the guest doesn't know the password for the network. honestly, there isn't a huge point to guest mode, in my opinion anyway, other than the fact that it makes the configuration shown in the video possible.
Amy McPherson yes, the hotspot has to be on at all times for the chromecast to function. the rate of consumption of mobile data depends on whatever content you are casting. for example, if you are streaming a movie, it could use over 1gb of cell data.
I tried it and it only worked on the second phone. Not my phone which, was transmitting the Wi-Fi. Tried restarting and redoing everything, but my phone can't cast. Help
Phillip Okoth might be a bug with Google Play Services that was plaguing many users recently. See some of the most recent comments below on this thread.
Joe George Unfortunately, my laptop could not setup the Chromecast, and my neighbor's cell phone couldn't detect it. I have the gen 1. Gonna get the Gen 2 and give it another go with the laptop or another friend's phone. This method looks perfect but I think I'm just having technical difficulties with hardware.
Jack Canter yeah, sounds a certain amount of troubleshooting should fix your problem. can your laptop, neighbor's phone, etc, hookup to the wifi network created by your phone's hotspot, and then surf the web, etc?
when you screen cast does the screen on the tv also rotate i wann use this in my car and would be nice if i can get it in portrait mode for google maps and ect... im using nexus 6p learned the hard way that google phones don't support MHL anymore... but this would be awesome to use on my pioneer just needed some answers befor i buy the cast thanks in advance
good question--so go to 9:31 in the video. The simplest answer to your question is that the image on your monitor will always reflect the mode your phone is in at any given moment. so, if your phone is in portrait mode, the image on your tv will be in portrait, with big black blocks on the left and right. if, and only if, the app you are using supports landscape mode, and you rotate your screen to landscape, the image on the tv will also flip, filling up the black space and making full use of the tv screen. hope this answers your question...
+Joe George yeah mhl was dumped, basically because Chromecast came along, which was a bummer but when you finally buy in to Chromecast, it's not so bad. what I cannot forgive Google for is dumping wireless charging on the 5x and 6p. that is why I still have an old Nexus 6. guess I'll wait to see if they come back to their senses this fall...
Thank you... I just ordered the Chromecast... And yeah i just upgraded from the nexus 6 well i still have it actually i always upgrade right around this time when they get a price decrease. But thank you for your video and comments you where really helpful
If you got a lot of use out of mhl, you are gonna LOVE Chromecast. Works identically, only wireless. That's what I should've said in the beginning... you will notice no difference in its function, and on-screen presentation, if you are already familiar with MHL. Cheers man! Stay safe in the car.
it doesn't sound like it. for a Chromecast to function, something has to be supplying a wireless internet connection to it. either 1. in-home wifi, or 2. a mobile hotspot through a smartphone that gets internet through a cellular data connection. #2 is what this video is about.
my hotspot wifi slow down after using the limited high speed data. my question is if my hotspot speed need to be fast in order to watch videos ect. or it just need it to connect to Chromecast?
caballarde 1 hi, a good connection would be very useful for both. Once the Chromecast is connected, the quality of your viewing experience will depend on the quality/speed of your internet connection.
caballarde 1 I'd be willing to bet that it would still work once throttled, but that the quality would be visibly degraded/pixelated or maybe even a few buffering issues here and there.
kikt kikt yes, follow the directions in this video exactly, and you should be on your way. for the very first setup, you will need a second phone. but, after set up, only one phone will ever be needed again. your one phone will both control the Chromecast, and, be the source of the hotspot that the Chromecast needs in order to function .
Okay I'm having problems with my Hotspot if I have hotspot I can connect to my Chromecast but my Hotspot is enabled and it's telling me to call AT&T what AT&T is closed right now I can't talk to anybody how do I fix my hotspot on my phone it's an Android Marvin
Suzanne Ledbetter hello. Did you get the issue fixed? Sounded like an issue with the data-internet service with your carrier. I'd suggest trying to reboot the hotspot phone.
on my phone it doesmt show the caso screen on the top Quico Access butrón, how do you get it yo show? it only shows on the actual app but ir does not Lety me if í done have the wifi on
Martha Gonzalez every phone is different, but on my phone you can rearrange quick tiles by tapping the edit icon (looks like a pencil ✏️) at the upper right of the quick tile screen, to the left of the gear icon.
its now fixed with a beta Google play services apk i just downloaded , www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/google-play-services/google-play-services-11-5-05-release/google-play-services-11-5-05-038-163818272-android-apk-download/
what does it fix?
Is this download safe
Thank you soooooo much. I got rid of my wifi to safe money living in a metropolitan area, and working 12hr shift. I have been trying to utilize my hotspot/unlimited network for months now. Thank you again for helping me continue to get out of debt. Awesome video!!! 😍👍🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
I watched this on a camping trip. I brought my lil 16 in flat screen, but the campgrounds had no wifi. Thanks to you every one had a better time.
That's awesome to hear! 🆒
I don't have any WiFi, but I do have two cell phones. I was stumped when Google Cast asked for a WiFi password. Now I know what to do, thanks man.
Thanks, this is exactly what i was looking for and it worked. Just used my old phone (which has no service) and my new phone's hotspot. The only extra step i had to take was download the chromecast app on my old phone.
I am very grateful for your video. It worked and saved me from returning the Chromecast because of not having wifi. Thank you again.
very welcome
Success. Initially I had a little trouble but I put on my thinking cap and figured it out. I could not have done without this tutorial though. Other videos had me lost in the sauce. Thank you so much!!! Many blessings to you and yours ol chap.
Ima Shopper great, it's nice knowing this video is of assistance to people. thank you.
U r stupid
Thanks for the video. Searched the internet and this is by far the best instructions on how to use your phone without Internet connection. Now I can use my chromecast.
thanks!
Sweet! Thanks man! I only had 1 phone so I followed the exact same steps but instead of using your wife's phone I used a PC to setup the Chromecast. After that I use my Xperia Z3+ on hotspot mode and it works flawlessly! Thanks again
good point! I should have mentioned that any "secondary" device would work (PC, phone, tablet, etc), but didn't think of it.
Thank you so much!! A million times I have tried to figure out how to make this happen or if it even could and you have answered all my qurstions!
Thank you so much for your detailed instructions. I tried numerous other videos but your one was the only one that worked. Loving it!
Michelle Smyth you are very welcome.
Thanks for the video! I don't know why I didn't think about using a second phone to setup the Chromecast.
I couldn't have done it any easier or without this tutorial. THANK YOU!
great to hear!
superb video jeo george... from last couple of days i have been searching ways on internet to connect cc through mobile but no one was as clear as you are in the video... thank you so much... you are a saviour for people like me who dont have router at home... i hope this same method will work on cc 2 and updated cc app called 'google home' ;-)
mufaddal chittalwala awesome--glad it's working for you. I'm curious, do you have an iPhone or Android phone?
Well said my friend, your right about others...they never mention "guest mode".
I've been trying to solve this for month. really thanks a lot for instruction.
best video I've seen on using 1 phone. thanks man
THANKS!!!!!!
hey man thanks for the upload.
Great advise!
Just remember to disable VPN in your phone if you use one. The trick didn't work if I had VPN on. Works well when VPN is disabled.
thank you for the help! I was trying to connect with my cellphone no result then found your video and even though I don't have a second cell I was able to do it with my tablet.
Marisol Casco very glad this could help
Very clearly explained and easy to follow instructions, thank you...
Thank you.
I thought i would have to take it back watched your video & it worked Thank You THANK YOU- THANK YOU.....💖💞
You're welcome!
+Joe George hey is it easy
I'd say so, yes.
+Joe George ok
I love the way u explain this so clear all I needed to hear
Thanks for a great video and your quick response. This will help me immensely when I am in Mexico and Caribbean
Hallelujah! You speak ENGLISH. You're good too!
Thank you again for the video
God's Blessings
Joe George Screen mirroring burns data on the 2nd non Hotspot phone? Even for non Internet apps?
Hrairoo555 sorry, I meant only for apps requiring data. you could cast, say, a movie that is saved to your phone's
onboard storage through screen mirroring, and that scenario would result in NO data being used from either of the phone's cellular data plans.
no wifi period is what we wonna see if that possible
for screen mirroring only...is that what you are asking? it is possible to screen mirror with all data to your phone turned off, but you have to very briefly have your mobile data turned on in the beginning to initiate the screen mirroring. then, u can turn it off and leave it off to ensure that you are not burning through any of your data. I'm not entirely sure why a momentary internet connection is absolutely required for this, or if anyone has figured out a hack for this yet.
+Joe George ok thanks im going to try and see what i come up with.
Got it Bro!!!! I Dunno what I Did , Followed Your u
instructions again step by step and it worked :)
good deal!
I already pay for 2 iPhones 1 iPad 1 Galaxy s5 1 tablet and $50 for hotspot on my account so I didn't want to buy wifi for $50+ a month and u just saved my wallet thank u again!
certainly glad this could help!
Thanks a million buddy!! I couldnt figure it out on my own!
Jennifer Morales very glad this could help
when you say it's permanently configured will you be able to use it with normal WiFi and not the Hotspot after you set it up
sure, you would just have to do a reset to the Chromecast and run the setup procedure with the different WiFi network. then, of you want to get into work with the hotspot again, you'd have to do another reset, rerun the setup procedure again, and so on.
a big thank you from London works perfectly
so cool!
Hi Joe when chromecast is using with mobile Hotspot as you showed in the video there is anything will problem or it is ok that??
To my experience, there has never been a problem. As long as your cellular data connection is good, it will function exactly like it would if you had it configured to a traditional landline wifi network...
what version of google home you're using? and why should i install the googleplay services ? thanks if you could answer Sir.
What app is being used? I cannot find the one thats similar to this video. All i can use is google home and it wont allow me to use my hotspot
00grow hopefully this is already a known issue with google, and they put out a fix with next update of Play Services...
hello joe (: do you still reply to comments? I have a question. I understand that the secondary phone is used to activate the Chromecast but once the set up is ready.. can the device giving out the Internet connection be used as a hotspot AND be able to cast a screen on the tv at the same time or does the screen casting only available to the secondary phone? I plan on purchasing a chromecast for a family member /: please reply, I don't know who else to go to and I'm a bit embarrassed to ask this to an employee that will give me the "you can't afford wifi?" look.
Avabel Noob Hello you won't need the secondary phone anymore once you connect. You can use the hot spot and cast from the same phone.
maria rivera oh what a relief. Thank you very much 😀
You're welcome
Maria Rivera is correct. Only one phone needed after setup, as illustrated in the video.
Thank you!! I'm going to try this method for tailgating.
dsaintil I agree, excellent alternative to bringing a dish to a tailgate (but only as long as the increased network congestion at a sporting event doesn't thwart your plan, so do keep that in mind.)
@Joe George
Why it needs a data connection?
1) Does it mean that even with my mobile data off (with just hotspot on)/no mobile network signal(with just hotspot on), mirroring would work ?
or
2) Mobile data also should be on but since neglible amount of mobile data will be used even for locally stored media, we are under the assumption that mobile data is not needed at all ?
I have hotspot on my phone but I don't have a second phone.
Are there any other options?
Thank you.
Does this setup use your data from your cellular plan? I am thinking it does... Thanks
yes, that is correct. unless you are only doing screen mirroring, in which case it is using practically no data.
You need only one phone to use phone WiFi hot spot, where did they get the idea you need two phones?
Excellent video - very well explained thank you
Very detailed and nice tutorial
Can I do this for a friend and then delete the Google Cast app on my phone without his ( or my ) future casting being compromised ? Or, better still, just do a factory reset and reinstall my Chromebook settings ?
Piers Lort-Phillips absolutely. in your example, you can do anything at all to your phone you wish. it won't effect your friend's ability to control his Chromecast in anyway, if set-up was done correctly.
Thanks Joe. Worked like a dream. Glad I found you. Cheers
Lort-Phillips
Sir mere pass HTC 816g mobile model hai....usme screen cast option b hai but screen cast krne se discount show krta hai.or phone ki screen LED me cast nhi hoti..please help me
Excellent tips, this really works! Thank you!!
hey joe, can u answer me a question i found out my mobile network gives me unlimited data to use on my phone but the hotspot feature has its own data tariff which is not unlimited. now if i get it all set up and as said in your video and i open youtube and press the cast button i found it uses the hotspot data and not my phones unlimited data and now I've expired all my use of hotspot for this month.
if i like mirror the whole phone screen and then open youtube do you know if it will use the hotspot data for the video or the phones data?
I'm guessing that using the cast button on youtube app itself just tells the chromecast a link to whatever youtube video you want to watch and the chomecast itself downloads the video via the wifi network its connected to (the hotspot)
but I'm thinking if i just mirror the whole phone screen to the chomecast the youtube video would be downloaded to the phone itself using the unlimited mobile data
i hope that all makes sense to you but i cannot try this myself until i can activate my hotspot again when i get more hotspot data
What app are you using to mirror the screen? I want to watch Kodi from my phone. Thanks
chad gerstmeyer it is a built-in feature of the Google Home app itself (first option on the left-menu called "Cast screen / audio"). and, depending on your phone, it might be a feature that is a native feature of the OS, such as on a Nexus or Pixel phone.
Joe George sounds good. I will try that. thanks for the quick replies!
chad gerstmeyer sure thing, hope it works, it certainly should.

2 devices using the same Chromecast at any given point without the other device being present.
yes, all the scenarios you pointed out are possible. it must be noted, however, that the device producing the hotspot is always required. device 2 is strictly optional. if you want to use device 2 (or any other tablet or smartphone), just make sure it's WiFi antenna is turned on and it will detect the Chromecast and you should be able to connect without a problem. device 1 (hotspot) can work with the Chromecast completely on its own without any other device. it can work by mirroring the screen (if the device supports mirroring), or by casting with Chromecast enabled apps. basically, it is fully functional.
will you need 2 phones every time?
For me not working anymore, after updated the app on my mto g3 TE. do you know what version of he google cast app are u using?
1.16.7 here. if you think an update has broken something, you could try to revert to an older version at apkmirror.com. that's what I use anyway, and sometimes that approach works for me.
i found a solution to the error when trying to use the chromecast without wifi, i have to turn it off (the t.v) and when turning on try to tap in wifi zone (tethering) that is working for me now.( Not always.
can i ask ? uhm what is that app you're using to connect to chromecast and the exact version of it?
JonashGrande balingan890 the Google Home app. My device is running 1.26.30.8 currently.
what app was you using to do this cause i was using google home i did everything right but when i tried to use my primary phone with the hotspot it said couldnt find my device to cast please help
Terrace Forney yeah, seems that a problem with an update to Google Play services is still preventing this method from working. supposedly, Google is working on a fix.
Wow brother, thank you so much. Awesome. It works 👍👍God bless
rene ramire great to hear it works, cheers
doing all these. do you still need to have mobile data avalible when you use your chromecast? lets say you go to a meeting room without mobile signals.
Joe George thks george
The display on your TV from your phone seems to be little bit delayed, what causes that?
Does that work for Chrome Cast 2 as well?
+Blizaack ! oh, and yes, both gen1 and gen 2 work identically using the method I'm demonstrating in the video
+Joe George Brilliant, thankyou so much Joe, i guess i know what I'll be buying. Your answers are very helpful.
I have chromecast ultra. I do everything you said, no devices found. Please help.
Galaxyskypro Sky the phone you are using to configure the Chromecast......talking about the "2nd phone".......I'm assuming the wifi antenna is turned on, correct? If it's not turned on, that's the only thing that could be preventing it from not "finding" the Chromecast.
Thank you for your video it works very well...
very glad it could help.
thanks dude!!!!! you just made my day😀😀😀😀😀
great to hear
can you update the video...I'm trying to set it up with my laptop.... should I only use a second phone?...
D Rey the computer can be used instead of the second phone. the second device is needed for setup purposes only.
Thanks Joe, it worked!
great!
Now that you the Hotspot on and your stream content, does that streaming waste the cellular data or the Hotspot data?
Joe George yes it is the update I just tried uninstalling the google service updates and it work for 5 min till it said you need you update blah blah but thanks anyway for tip
question. it is asking for a WiFi password, but I never did set one up. I have look in my phone and I can't find it.Help!
every phone is different, but on my device (moto nexus6 with Android 6.0.1) it is under settings/wireless & networks/tethering and portable hotspot/setup wifi hotpot. there, I can set my own password for my device's hotspot the other devices will have to enter in order to connect.
Thanks!
Hi, what if I have a wifi in my office but a username and password log-in is required after connecting to the wifi in order to access to the internet? can I connect my phone to this wifi and setup the chromecast to connect to the same wifi network? Will it work for screen mirroring with a hotspot from a cell phone without any cellular data?
if I understand your question correctly, then yes, you can connect to your Chromecast this way in order to bypass the need to connect to your hotel's wifi altogether. in fact, I had this very issue in mind when I made this video. in most hotels, you have to enter the password on a landing page in your phone's browser rather than in your phone's wifi settings, and AFAIK, it makes it impossible to connect your Chromecast to the hotel's wifi. with my method, you never have to connect to the hotel wifi, so this is a non-issue. also, screen mirroring does not eat through your cellular data allotment other than whatever data you are consuming for the content. for example, if you are watching live sports streamed over cellular data, and mirror it to your Chromecast, then of course, you will burn through your data allowance from your carrier. but, if you have a movie SAVED on your phone's onboard memory, and want to mirror it to your Chromecast, then you will burn through NONE of your data, which is great.
now I realize you after talking about your office, and not a hotel, but my explanation above applies the same to hotels, office buildings, hospitals, or whatever.
thank you
im trying to do this with my laptop and phone, i turned on my mobile hotspot on my s6. and i downloaded for my laptop. once i get to the point that i am setting up the name of my chromecast, and configuring my laptop to the chromecast it trys to disconnect from the hotspot and conect to the chromecast, but that means there is no Internet connection!! ughhh im so frustrated =(
Hmmm, that's a strange one. The only thing can think of is reboot everything and try again. Especially your laptop. It sounds like that is where the problem is...
Would this work on an iphone ? I cant seem to find the chromecast app only the google home app
ThatWeirdAlex it should be able to. The Google Home app is the correct app btw, not the Chromecast app.
Joe George thanks so i set up everything like you said but i cant cast but i believe you ive done this before but with an android i would just turn on my hotspot and it would work but now that i got an iphone it wont work im not sure whats wrong
i did everything right, but whenever i try to click cast screen/audio. it says no compatible device? any help
JonashGrande balingan890 sounds like your Chromecast is not paired to a wifi network or a hotspot. Either that, or your WiFi on your phone is turned off.
can i cast netflix and hulu from my phone also? if so, will i be able to close the app while it is playing?
just depends on whether the app is Chromecast-ready. I don't subscribe to either of those in particular, so not sure. if an app is not Chromecast-ready, it can always be mirrored as an alternative.
Thank You so much I new it could be done
What is the app called that you used on the 2nd phone it looks like a WiFi picture
kara french it's the Google Home app
It works great but how can I take off screen mirroring so I can use the phone without tampering with what's going on the screen. I use Samsung s7 Edge
to disconnect, just go to the Google Cast app, go to the left-menu, select "Cast screen / audio" and two disconnect.
+Joe George *tap disconnect
It works excellent! Thank you!
Thank u so much! And so easy to follow
If guest mode allows a phone without Wifi connection to connect to chromecast, HOW does it connect?
Nukeboyt guest mode enables a phone to quickly connect to a Chromecast that is on a wifi network that can't be easily connected to by a guest, such as if the guest doesn't know the password for the network. honestly, there isn't a huge point to guest mode, in my opinion anyway, other than the fact that it makes the configuration shown in the video possible.
Nukeboyt yes same issue it pissed me off royally
I eventually gave up. I believe that the author was able to do this, but for some reason I cannot make it work.
Does it use up your hotspot fast? Do you have to keep hotspot on after it connects??
Amy McPherson yes, the hotspot has to be on at all times for the chromecast to function. the rate of consumption of mobile data depends on whatever content you are casting. for example, if you are streaming a movie, it could use over 1gb of cell data.
thank you this absolutely worked for me!
great!
My chromecast makes me use Google home app, I see here you used a chromecast app. Do they both work the same?
It use to be called the Cast App (or something like that) before .. now, the name has change to the Google Home App
@@Joe.George it works, thank you for your video. It was very helpful
Could this be done with a phone hotspot and a laptop connected to the hotspot?
Jack Canter yes, this can definitely be done.
Joe George Yes it can, and that's the odd part. I'll leave feedback on how things turn out. Thanks in advance for any tips or advice!
Pls answer my question Sir, Does chromecast provides Pin automatically?
JonashGrande balingan890 that's correct; it does.
Joe George Oh ok, thank you for quicky response SUB :)
when you screen cast does the screen on the tv also rotate i wann use this in my car and would be nice if i can get it in portrait mode for google maps and ect... im using nexus 6p learned the hard way that google phones don't support MHL anymore... but this would be awesome to use on my pioneer just needed some answers befor i buy the cast thanks in advance
good question--so go to 9:31 in the video.
Thanks man i will...
thanks, worked like a charm
if i have a laptop with wifi but no router, just an old modem, would i still need to do this?
it doesn't sound like it. for a Chromecast to function, something has to be supplying a wireless internet connection to it. either 1. in-home wifi, or 2. a mobile hotspot through a smartphone that gets internet through a cellular data connection. #2 is what this video is about.
cheers man
my hotspot wifi slow down after using the limited high speed data. my question is if my hotspot speed need to be fast in order to watch videos ect. or it just need it to connect to Chromecast?
caballarde 1 hi, a good connection would be very useful for both. Once the Chromecast is connected, the quality of your viewing experience will depend on the quality/speed of your internet connection.
Joe George thanks for the info.i guess I won't be able to do it because my hotspot high speed don't last too long lol.
caballarde 1 I'd be willing to bet that it would still work once throttled, but that the quality would be visibly degraded/pixelated or maybe even a few buffering issues here and there.
Can I use just one phone to connect to chromecast and be its own hotspot simultaneously
kikt kikt yes, follow the directions in this video exactly, and you should be on your way. for the very first setup, you will need a second phone. but, after set up, only one phone will ever be needed again. your one phone will both control the Chromecast, and, be the source of the hotspot that the Chromecast needs in order to function .
scrap that it worked thank you!
Deb Render awesome, any questions let me know
Okay I'm having problems with my Hotspot if I have hotspot I can connect to my Chromecast but my Hotspot is enabled and it's telling me to call AT&T what AT&T is closed right now I can't talk to anybody how do I fix my hotspot on my phone it's an Android Marvin
Suzanne Ledbetter hello. Did you get the issue fixed? Sounded like an issue with the data-internet service with your carrier. I'd suggest trying to reboot the hotspot phone.
hello, do the download for the beta , has any virus or is it safe ,
on my phone it doesmt show the caso screen on the top Quico Access butrón, how do you get it yo show?
it only shows on the actual app but ir does not Lety me if í done have the wifi on
Martha Gonzalez every phone is different, but on my phone you can rearrange quick tiles by tapping the edit icon (looks like a pencil ✏️) at the upper right of the quick tile screen, to the left of the gear icon.
Joe George it doesnt show it on mine, it turns off my hotspot whenbi do it
i tried sending a screen shot but it doesn't let me as pictures
