I'm a big fan of Magic Realm, it's still one of the best BGs out there. I hope Dragons Down acts as an accessible route to the same kind of great gaming.
I’m a big fan of Magic Realm, so this was an auto back for me. I thought the interaction between you both was really helpful towards learning the game, now that my KS has arrived. Many thanks.
Thank you, Paul, for covering the game! And thank you, Scott, for sharing the game with. Paul and this UA-cam audience!
This game looks amazeballs! I look forward to looking for it on Kickstarter soon!
amazeballs!
Wow! The combat reminds me of Mage Knight - and I wasn’t aware of any game which came close! I ❤ it!
Great tutorial/playthrough, will definitely follow this project closely.
Love magic realm and this looks great!
I am so here for this game. As a huge Mage Knight fan this looks like just my thing.
Yes, I am very much looking forward to this! 😀
Hey, I'm 46 and I learned to play Magic Realm a years ago, LoL (alone).
I will keep an eye on this, definitively.
Thanks for the video.
Paul, just stumbled across this!. I have actually played Magic Realm several times with two different game groups that were into it. I was still none the wiser with the incredibly cumbersome and opaque combat system. Pretty much everything else clicked and was pretty cool. I’m going to have to dive into this, it seems way more accesable.
Very excited for this one... thanks for the playthrough
Awesome another game I need to keep an eye on love adventure type games.
Curious at approx 26 mins designer talks about “no character can defeat 5 enemies on their own”. Does this mean there’s a disadvantage in playing solo only? I intend to play solo only and hoping there are ways around this.
Great to see how this game has developed from the time this was recorded to the version sent to backers, and a new expansion coming back to kickstarter on 7 Jan 2025 too :)
It got played 3 times at GridCon :)
In Scott's game 'Hellenica', the combat dice use the same 'choose the highest die' mechanism as Magic Realm did. Should have known he was going to come up with something like this…
I’m just discovering this card and it looks really diverse and interesting.
19:40 Will the physical version of the game come with a list of actions, too? Thanks.
Got my copy!
1:22:58 What if no pink cubes were available?… Or are there an unlimited amount of pink cubes available? Thanks.
Any chance you might have forgotten to roll the dice in 1:07?
Is this still accurate?
1:14:4O combat explanation
I own a copy of Magic Realm. It was a game that captured my imagination when it first came out and I finally got a copy just a few years ago. I've spent hours reading the rules and using other guides to try to figure out how to play the game. Sadly, I've not been able to play it since I was never confident that I understood it well enough to play, much less teach it. You mentioned that Scott has taught it to many people. I'd be interested in if he has any materials (text, videos, etc) he uses that could be available or what method he uses to teach the game. Anything like that available? Any suggestions for someone trying to learn the game?
Immediately saw the the resemblance of Dragons Down map tiles to Magic Realm. I'm following the KS page and will be interested to see the project when it launches.
I just got the basic game and ordered the expansions. I am so glad you did NOT go for miniatures. I find they clutter up the board and feel really childish, to me. I know I am in the minority, but minis are such a pain. I don't paint them any longer, and they look lame unpainted. They are a pain to store; you end up doubling the box size. I think if folks want minis there are certainly a plethora of fantasy minis that will work nicely.
Again, thank you!
When you say "you" - I assume you mean the designer. I'm just the guy who created the video and played it :)
@GamingRulesVideos Ha! I got your number. You're the puppetmaster that controls all things!
Yes, please pass my sentiments along, thank you.
The popularity of minis is my windmill to tilt against, alas.
Thats a lie Scott :D I am 28 and know most of the rules of the Magic Realm
14:28 Wow… The game must be an expensive game to begin with, then.
1:00:21 Wow… That die seems rigged! 😞
1:00:43 Finally! 😀
Can’t hear Scott at the beginning of the video :(
Ah, audio fixed! Thanks!
@@JJ_TheGreatYep!
what's the advantage to the human quality of having an extra action in a civilisation if you can just keep taking actions with no risk of monsters appearing anyway?
You can do more in a single turn.
Isn't this a weird amalgamation of Magic Realm and some other games?
Ver much inspired by Magic Realm
6:38 28 y/o here, lmao
I really wish some of these "old school" designers would playtest with people outside of their group, AND hire a developer to come in and streamline.
This game is a game I should love!!!! Looks like a mix of Mage Knight and D&D, yet it looks so needlessly complicated, that it looks more complicated than Mage Knight.
There is zero chance that the rulebook for this game isn't a nightmare with 100s of exceptions, WHY!!!! It doesn't need to be!
Prejudice is the word that describes your comment
I'm sorry the map looks very very bad and turns me off greatly
Can you specify?
Colors?
Too much rigid symmetry?
Not enough landscape in between the paths?
You’re the sort that thinks good graphics make a good game. 😂
@@MasterRaccoon9000no I‘m the sort that finds ugly AI art hard to enjoy
Good luck with gaming in the future. AI will be everywhere
@ I will enjoy it until then. Enough good games released in the last 20 years
