I interpret the baseball scene to be a childhood version of the legendary Babe Ruth, who audaciously pointed to the outfield wall indicating he was going to hit a home run (and then did exactly that). The clothing matches that era.
Of course the singing & harmonies are terrific and Adam has outdone himself with the beatboxing. Including the names & songs of country stars is such clever song writing. Austin's braids are a nod to Willie Nelson. The boys playing baseball reference Babe Ruth and even the scenes with them are sepia toned to reflect the era! I love this video & song! Thanks for playing this & your comments. I've had 3 ginger cats - they're really determined!
It is amazing how word order makes a big difference. This was originally "Will you remember my name", but Austin decided he wanted it to be more positive/assertive and changed it to "you WILL remember my name". And the entire feeling of the song changes. The "point" harkens back to Babe Ruth who famously pointed to where he was going to put the ball - with the same attitude as "you WILL remember my name". One of these days I really do need to investigate how much of the lyrics are snips of Luke and Garth's songs besides the references to Friends in Low Places and On my Mind. As for not necessarily knowing who is singing if you don't see them - I still don't always know. In spite of the fact that they have really distinct voices, they are also able to sound virtually identical. Go back and listen to the beginning of Man of Constant Sorrow, when it changes from Austin to Rob - a very subtle change in voices, and if you weren't watching, you might not notice. It happens in other songs, but my brain won't give me any others right now. I'm fairly sure, though, that at least the last part of the descant IS double tracked Austin. It has his 'sound'. Thank you for doing this. Now to wait for you to do Playing with Fire.
I agree on the descant being Austin on overdub. 👍 Most definitely his voice. You were saying they can sound alike; that immediately brings to mind Chance & Rob at the beginning of "Helplessly Hoping"! 😳
Yep, perfectly stated. I'm as close to 100% sure as I can be without knowing that all the flourishes at the end are Austin. Absolutely has his beautiful sound.
I had to laugh at how excited you were about this on the first listen. It is a fun, bouncy one. I think the descant is Austin on a second track. He's done this in other songs (Understand and When Will I Be Loved, for instance) and it sounds more like him than Rob. I think Rob's voice is a little rounder than Austin's. I always think that the part about the DJ is sort of a poke in the eye of all the radio programmers who don't/won't play them, for whatever reason. Which always makes me smile. This was a fun reaction. And some ear scratchies to the beauteous Timmy.
Loved seeing how much you enjoyed this. I was never much of a country fan before I started listening to Home Free, so I looked up when each of them really got famous. The years mentioned in here were couple of years before they really got to be stars. I also think the baseball part of the video is supposed to be Babe Ruth before he was famous. Others have said the verses about each artist have references to some of their songs, but I'm not familiar enough with their work to really pick up on what those are. Austin's hair is a callback to Willie Nelson's braids. I always enjoy your commentary on the music and video components.
Austin is such a great songwriter! This song is so catchy, you can’t help but sing along and move. Love all the vocals by the boys and love beast mode Adam! I can’t stop replaying this song, I’m addicted! Thanks for a great reaction. I love ginger cats, they are always so sweet and affectionate……
Our "Fabulous Five" definitely deserve so much more exposure and fame! But we Home Fries appreciate that the guys continue to stay grounded and approachable even as their stars continue to rise❣️🎼🥰🎶❤ Wishing our Home Free fellas all the success and fame they desire 🤩
Yes, this is the most recent music video from Home Free and the last video from the “So Long Dixie” album. Written by Austin and Andrew Tufano. Home Free dropped a live video of their “Sea Shanty” today.
Listening to your analysis brings even more appreciation of the intricacies that make up a song we truly enjoy. Thank you so much, I learn something new every time I watch one of your reactions. If you would like to check out a really great live performance of Home Free, they just released their "Sea Shanty Medley", live in concert. Thanks again for the joy.
David, I love this analysis brother.....again you point out things that would have escaped me otherwise. I'm still hoping you'll react to Home Free's cover of "I can't outrun you"
You definitely need to go check out some of the other songs from So Long Dixie, which is mostly what the videos have been this year, but not completely. They've been fabulous.
Based on the tone of the voice, I think they may have double tracked Austin for that descant. When Rob comes in later, you can hear the difference in their tones. Austin co-wrote this with a couple others. Austin has also released several original audio tracks on the Releases tab of his UA-cam channel recently that are very good.
To give you a tiny bit of context for the baseball with the “torn” cover, one measure of prowess was to “knock the cover off the ball”. Enjoyed your analysis! Be blessed!
Love the song. Austin braids were a nod to Willie Nelson. Loved Tim’s low notes. The little boys were giving a nod to a great player Babe Ruth who used to point to where he was going to hit the ball. Good reaction David K. They’re coming to England next week I think. 🥰
Thanks for your reaction & analysis. What another great original song! Love the nostalgic feel of this song & the video. They mention a few of the country greats in this song. Also think it is a nod to the great baseball legend Babe Ruth. Austin sings about Willie (Nelson) at one point. Think his braids are an homage to Willie. Love Tim's lower tone in the verse he sings. And Adam is awesome as usual. These guys are so talented & in a league by themselves.
One newer one…”PLAYING WITH FIRE”…..written by Austin….it’s …SMOKIN’….HOT 🔥🔥❤️🔥🔥🔥‼️🎵…the fire dancers kinda help the 🔥heat🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥 Yes…this one is just Great FUN…catchy…makes you smile …. Just Love it 💗🔥🔥💗
The video is so badly edited that it seems to have been done by someone who has never listened to the song. When Austin gets to the climax of the song, he is not in shot at all and in fact there is no reaction to the shape of the song at all. The woman also seems so dead-eyed that any relation to the song is lost.
@@patriciamcl54 I have seen no other comments like this on 'Fire". Having focus off Austin at that point leaves a whole lot more to the imagination that trying to capture some expression of some sort. As for the woman's eyes - who is watching her eyes? She is not interacting with us, she is interacting with her partner and the fire. We are watching her hair float and shine in the fire light, her face in light and shadow, her interactions with her partner and the fire itself - that momentary inhalation every time the fire passes close to them is the high.
Re Adam Rupp, I love his energy. I’m assuming he does not come from a country music background. Because I think he’s bringing stuff from other genres to the freshen up percussion in Home Free’s country songs.
Yup. You'll notice on any of their behind-the-scenes clips where they ask what country song or artist they'd love to do or collaborate with, Adam's eyes glaze over and he changes the subject. Man *still* doesn't follow the country music world and he's in it.
@@lrfcowper Not sure to what extent the whole band is really in the country music world. You remember that they called themselves country just to get onto the SingOff but what they perhaps didn't fully understand at the time was that they were saddled with that label for ever. In itself this is enough to ensure that enormous numbers will never listen to them, while their repertoire is so much broader than country that they have difficulty being taken seriously by the country music establishment. It will be interesting to see whether they make more of an effort to go mainstream by ditching most of the country stuff and leaving the country silo.
I got that impression, too... ALTHOUGH... lol There's always a "but"! 😉 I know Adam really admires the Oaks, he looked totally star struck when they were with Kenny, and just yesterday I saw a pic of him arm-in-arm with Keith Urban and he was looking at him and positively fan-girling!! 🤣😂 So, he must like at least SOME country. 😉❤ On a serious note: I have heard him and Rob say they were never really into country before HF started doing it. For Adam, it kind of makes sense, really. Traditional country drums are fairly slow and almost monotonous if you had to do it like Adam does! The newer country sound tends to have a more fun beat...like Garth, etc. Or if they do a traditional tune, but reimagine it - like Folsom. I kind of wish they'd do more southern rock!
@@leslieoneal4464 Southern Rock and Rustbelt/Heartland? “Seven Bridges Road” and Born in the USA” kind of thing? You must have a specific group or songs in mind.
You may want to take a look at their latest album. All but two songs are original and they have now released them all with studio recordings and videos. CHEERS!!
I don't know much (or anything, really) about musical theory, but I wonder if what you said about the melody being kept simple makes the song something that people want to sing along to? The kind of song that sticks in your head and you're humming it for the next two weeks. Visually it looks like they lowered the saturation, softened it, and added some yellow to give a sense of distance and a feeling of a bright summer day (to keep the low saturation from feeling dark). There was also some lens flare in the "past" segments. The footage of the band is also a little desaturated with a bit of extra yellow - possibly so it doesn't clash with the baseball segments - but less. It also gives a sense of a sunny day with a bit of glare and haze.
I love Home Free's original songs. This is the year they've released a whole album of them (You have a lot of fun to have when you get to more HF's new stuff). My only gripe is their stinginess when it comes to info and credits about their videos. I wish they'd take a page out of VoicePlay's book on that count.
I think that last high was Chance. Rob has a totally different tone at that level. It's also not Tim, not sharp enough. When I first heard this song I thought they had dubbed Austin over himself. It wasn't until your analysis that I considered the others for that.
