I started training on rings about a year ago. I absolutely love them! Great for building shoulder stability and they force you to use your scapula properly. Great for building your biceps and forearms. You can learn the false grip on rings which is imperative for getting a muscle up. Finally I think rings are much safer than a fixed bar because they allow you to move in all planes of motion. Oh and I almost forgot, I traveled around Europe for two months with my rings and was able to use them everywhere! Very portable. I got mine at Rep Fitness for $39. Each strap is numbered making it really easy to set them up evenly. If you want to develop more strength and see huge gains in your calisthenics, buy yourself some rings!
I agree, the movement and instability certainly makes these a win either way. And you're right, those numbered straps make the adjustments so much easier. They should be mandatory in all designs.
@@Fahad-369 Rings are really for upper body. You could use them to assist you with learning some more difficult sqats like the pistol sqat. For legs I would recommend running, jumping, squats, lunges, ladder drills. Good luck!
@@c.wallacehume5625 Thank You for the pointers. Taken into consideration and gonna kill it. much appreciated. May God bless you and your family with a happy, healthy, long, fulfilling and successful life.
I made a DIY trainer using cam straps, PVC, & paranoid for foot loops as well as cargo tie down anchors & lag screws for mounting to floor joists. I hope you have a video onnthe Bowline as I was considering making something similar for an even smaller & lighter trainer for traveling or as you said throwing in a pocket or such for training outside! I don't leave my wooden rings outside so a cheap PVC & straps/rope are perfect for hanging from a tree & using for me & my kids to train & play w outside!
Personal preference is the key. I don't got to park or train away from home and if I occasionally do train away from home I just go basic body weight training. I've got a set of rings permanently setup, I've got a bag of resistance bands. I've even got a Fortress Power Tower (which is pretty good, I must say), Swiss balls etc. But rings are my jam at my age and circumstance. So, what do you like? Go with that! Great video as always Matt. PS I'm 60 years old, so I just do what I want as I feel it and not stress the rest!
I always had trouble with the width o the rings since i like keepin my feet close together, that and the rings were hard against my Achilles. Maybe padding them with towels?
Finally got my hands on a set of those a few months ago. Like the wooden handles. I like wood handles, which is another potential win for rings and I don't know why straps don't use them more. Maybe because they are a more expensive build.
Hi! I first saw about your video on reddit bwf about hamstring curls and subscribed and watched some of your videos! I bought a cheap suspension trainer and it comes with the attachment so it can be used with a closed door inside the house which made my setup easier and cheaper than buying rings (rings are less popular, hard to find and more expensive in my country). Since we are all stuck home because of coronavirus, I like that I can finally do rows, upper back exercises, hamstring curls with my suspension trainer! I would appreciate more suspension trainer content!
Way to take action there MertBegkan. I have a decent amount of suspension stuff, if you look under my Grind Style Calisthenics playlist. But you're right, there's a lot we can do on a door so I'll be sure to post some stuff in the near future for ya
I use my rings for hamstring curls, no problem. And rings are best because all the amazing gymnasts use them so even though I can't do much, they inspire me of what my potential could be so I'm more likely to want to use them. :-)
Buy both, and you're set While rings may add slightly more stability demands due to not being straight handle, they seem (to me) more sturdier and stronger than plastic handles in suspension syraps
I'm glad you made this video. I was wondering about your thoughts on the rings but it was never really important in comparison to other questions I had, so I always forgot to simply ask. Also, since many folks will be buying into s. trainers for the temp sessions away from the gym, they would be best served by the info in this video. Personally, since I've been working with your DIY Prussik trainer 2.0, I've never bothered moving away from it. Though, I am thinking of upgrading to the cam trainer and building one for my mom to send to her, since she is finally getting back into fitness again. As for costs, when one thinks about the up front cost, it really depends on a few variables: do they like DIY, do they expect to use these only a few times, do they expect these could be a great addition to their gym routine, and finally, how much would each month at the gym cost in comparison to a complete, portable gym like either of these options?
@ RedDelta .. running 6miles 5 days a week an doing lots of calisthenics and still don’t look ripped !! But have lost an maintenance the 49lb lost .. What am I doing wrong .. I have been at it since February ??
Matt can you make a series of videos with the FOCUS of fixing body posture??! Many people are away from there desk job or working a lot less so it's the perfect time to fix posture imbalances!
I have the Monkii Bars 2. I mainly bought them for rows but my current living situation has me using them for pull-ups and chin-ups because the ceiling is too low to use the bar (my head hits the ceiling). I don’t really enjoy using anything other than a solid bar for vertical pulling but it gets the job done for now.
ring I haven't tried it, but it might be more comfortable to rest your foot on the strap itself instead of the ring when using your foot Also, it may be good to attach a strap to the end of the strap
Hi Matt, great video quality as always. Will you be reviewing the T2 Iso-Trainer anytime soon? I got an early bird special on mine and am excited for it to arrive.
I like rings but the suspension trainer seem better in my own opinion. I hate the rubbing of straps on the arms. Definitely wear long sleeves if doing dips and push ups with rings to avoid burning your arms.
Yea, that's why I just keep my arms pressed into the rings when doing dips. I figure it's best to keep the pressure on so the arms don't rub and just stay still on them
Hey Matt, I bought a ring long time ago and love it. I would like to convert to a suspension trainer (handles). I see a few products online but not sure which one is good. Do you have a recommendation for those suspension handles with carabine?
I tried suspension trainers in the gym but somehow it did not make me feel like I am in control. With the rings there is a great satisfaction for me to master every movement. And post workout I feel like Yuri van Gelder. Check him out 😎
lol! Is it wrong to imagine the olympic judges are watching when I would use rings :) That extra control may very well be due to that contact on the forearm I was mentioning before, that and the lack of the rotating handle. You wouldn't think a rotating handle would make that much difference, but it is a moving part which can feel a bit less connected through the motion.
Maybe you're doing a too strong wrist flexion during your biceps curl (something like a false grip), which activates your forearm even before your first rep. Try to have less flexed wrists, or try a neutral grip (hammer curl for example)
I have used both and I like rings a bit better. A couple months back I got some wood rings, 1.25” thick and they feel much better than the various plastics. I like that the ring straps are separate for pull ups, dips, holds and body rows, and other things. And 1.25” diameter rings feel better than 1” and build grip strength. The suspension trainers are more compact for travel.
not too much, Ring training.com was a nice design but not sure if they are still in business. Rogue rings are also quality, but you can't go wrong out there.
Muscle ups and all things you do without contact to the ground, such as handstands, skin the cat, even dips etc. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, it depends on what you are going to do. Why should I limit myself ? For ground work and leg training, I mostly prefer ST, for all things in the air, I prefer rings, as they easily allow changes in grip and direction. If I only could chose one however, I would go with rings, as they are more versatile overall. There is a reason why rings are one of the oldest training devices and still exist.
I've had folks do muscle ups on my Grind Straps in the past, but not sure if that's more possible with that model because the handles lock in place under load.
One advantage of rings is that you can do press-ups on them without being suspended. They can be used as essentially unstable parallettes. ua-cam.com/video/Kjaa1OOxAtE/v-deo.html
I used to have the same attitude, and it is probably mostly true. In fact, i used to get a ton of questions from people asking me about NOSSK and I would tell them they must be crap at that price. But as I always say, an opinion that's not based on experience is just a guess. Lesson learned
The biggest mistake in getting fit is listening to VShred. Whyyy does he appear before people with actual information? 😢
Ad Guard!
I love the rings for push and pull movements, monkii bars for everything else. Can’t beat a rotating handle for everything else.
I’ve both and use them for different exercises but my TRX is definitely my companion on every trip.
I would like to ask you a question, is there a way to stop the TRX from rotating?

Ring diameter for my larger hands are much too small. My rule of thumb if you wear x-large size gloves then the standard G ring will be uncomfortable.

Rings are my weapon of choice
Just be careful where you point them......

But why i feel my forearm during bicep curl on these instead of biceps.
Simple, that's your weakest muscle in your pull-chain. So just stick with it and your forearms will catch up with the rest of your pulling moves.
