  • A Canticle for Leibowitz is a post-apocalyptic social science fiction novel by American writer Walter M. Miller Jr., first published in 1959. Set in a Catholic monastery in the desert of the southwestern United States after a devastating nuclear war, the book spans thousands of years as civilization rebuilds itself. The monks of the Albertian Order of Leibowitz preserve the surviving remnants of man's scientific knowledge until the world is again ready for it.
The novel is a fix-up of three short stories Miller published in The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction that were inspired by the author's participation in the bombing of the monastery at the Battle of Monte Cassino during World War II. The book is considered one of the classics of science fiction and has never been out of print. It won the 1961 Hugo Award for best science fiction novel, and its themes of religion, recurrence, and church versus state have generated a significant body of scholarly research. A sequel, Saint Leibowitz and the Wild Horse Woman, was published posthumously in 1997.

It's very nice that you are using many voices!
Those who are hard of hearing, you might find that some of the whispery, elderly voices are challenging.
This is one of my old favorite books. If you know nothing of monastic life or medieval religion, this will be something like an alien world, but you will come away knowing more about Western culture than you'd expect.

Such a great interpretation for such a great story. Amazing acting, you could imagine to be watching a movie with the great actors that contributed their voices. This is a story that becomes sadly relevant once more, since history does rhyme cyclically.
Curiously, this is the ffirst time I know about this book, but I included independently a few similar ideas in my recently published comicbook.

The quality of the production is very similar (I’d say equal) to NPR’s Star Wars audio dramatizations (all three of the original movies were dramatized for radio) from the 80s… if you at all enjoyed the movies, and the qualities of this audio production appeal to you, you’ll probably really dig them… definitely recommend that you give them a listen!

An excellent radioplay of an excellent book.
Even with all our nuclear weapons, we have nowhere near the power of a single vulcanic explosion or meteor strike. When havent the power to threaten Earth. Not even close. Not yet.
Whats more, humanity has repeated survived greater disasters than we could yield, even with every weapon we have ever had time three, or so. So a nuclear holocaust would destroy our global civilization, but not humanity.
The scary thing, tho, is the survivors will know we survived and nuclear war will remain on the table for the next round.
How many rounds of nuclear apocolypse would be required for a knock-out blow?
Earth will abide, of course. And i guess the extinction of humanity is no big deal compared to all the extinctions life has endured. But how long will life have to escape ita Earthly confines? And is there time enough after us for another opportunity to escape?
