Jason, I bought a Lexus GX 470 in 2004. It was a really practical vehicle--13 MPG and used premium gas. I traded in a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee that was a bit problematic, as Jeeps tended to be in those years. A couple days later, a dealership employee called and said my Grand Cherokee looked great (which it did) and he was thinking of buying it. I asked him what he did in the dealership, and said he was a mechanic. I told him that the Jeep was perfect for him.
I remeber thos early hrand cherokees. My best friend had one. Some little issues but he drove it for 10 years and over 300k miles. Then bought another one and did the same. They served him very well. I know very little about lexus as they have never been anything that interest me personally. But with toyota prices today lexus is looking much better
As a 2012 GX 460 owner, that has a lot of money invested in into it, I will not buy the new GX 550. I prefer the new mid grade Land Cruiser over the new GX. Toyota has stated that the Land Cruiser was designed with the customer modifying or building it out in mind. The GX was built to be good at daily driving and off roading. The new E-KDSS in the Overtrail helps it achieve this goal. But, it makes it harder for the customer to build it into the vehicle they want it to be if that vehicle includes more ground clearance. For those of us that, like me, live in southern Texas and want to see Forests, trees, and mountains, we have a long way to drive to get there (Land Cruiser has 10 more mpg) and want bigger tires and more ground clearance (easier to lift without E-KDSS) and wouldn't mind having the hybrid system for a second starter battery and powering almost anything while camping. I would get a Land Cruiser Land Cruiser without the expensive package you added to yours. the mid grade Land Cruiser allows you to purchase a vehicle with all the off road goodies but not the more expensive "luxury" packages that brings it to Lexus prices. Few reviewers have made this distinction that of all the videos I have watched about the Land Cruiser, only one Toyota employee has made.
Great points. But 95% of people buying either of these are not modding them. And 95% of them will do nothing more than light duty offroad. So for 95% of people the 550 would be the smarter buy IN MY OPINION but based on the stuff I showed in the video.
@@Jason-Samko True, and we only got the newer "cheaper" land cruiser option because enough people complained that Land Cruisers were too expensive. If I only wanted a daily driver that I could sometimes off road, I would favor the GX. But, having a poor mpg GX now, I won't consider it for the longer trips I will make.
Nice, I'm out in the deserts of California, short drive all those places you mentioned-but im like you, won't buy a new Lexus-i have a 2000 LX470 I take all over the Mojave Desert/Mtns, rivers, ect- plus having the V-8 is nice!
If we’re going to compare new Land Cruiser to new GX 550, then GX 550 should be the obvious choice based on engine size. I rather have a TTV6 in the GX than the 2.4L 4 cylinder hybrid in the LC. You really wonder what the potential longevity and reliability of a 2.4L 4-cyc hybrid engine hauling all that weight on the LC. 🤔
Was thinking about the new LC for my wife’s next vehicle in a couple years, but also found the Lexus to be a better buy due to the engine/trans, towing, seating, etc. I showed it to her and she said she wouldn’t drive the Lexus because it’s “douchie” lol.
I’ve been saying this since they released LC pricing and 4Runner reveal. The GX Overtrail is the value option of the lineup. Not cheapest but best value. No battery hump. Only negative is premium gasoline.
Neither of these vehicles are something I'd own personal or have any interest in. But given what I'm seeing and learning about them, I'd take the 550 over the lc personally.
I didn’t hear you mention one important fact…the GX550 Overtrail has E-KDSS, Which is way better than a cheesy front swaybar disconnect. Let’s see, better looking, better power, way more luxurious, better towing, E-KDSS… 🤔 Lexus! Also, anyone that knows about Land Cruisers, knows that’s not really a Land Cruiser. Unfortunately, they don’t sell those in North America.
I just got done arguing the same points with a Toyota diehard yesterday. Lol. They denied this over and over..... 😂 Pricing out an LC250 vs the GX550 Overtrail was a 1k difference. Hell, the GX550 is cheaper than a Sequioa. And I'll take that V6 over the hybrid 4. Yes, it's more complex than a NA engine, but it's less likely to shit the bed than the hybrid. And it's got 3 to 4 years in the wild to work out bugs. And f**k moonroofs. Eventual leak spot Great vid. 👍🏻
Sequoia is a lot a lot bigger man. The GX I don’t think people realize how small it actually is. I’ve seen both in person. The GX is basically “cute” it looks so small. Looks like a soccer mom car. At least the LC looks more man car
Yep both of these are not vehicles I have much interest in and honestly don't know a ton about. But my wife likes them both so I have been doing so research. I agree 100%. I'd much rather own the 550 than the lc. For the same reasons you stated
@JokerG16 have not even read the article yet. Thru it in my news folder to talk about if it's worth talking about. If it is worth it it will be out later in the week probably.
I still think the Land Cruiser is the better buy... residual values will be better. Overall cost of ownership. The hybrid is fine. Better MPG for long trips.
All those things are unknown except the mpgs. But both are great vehicles. My money would go to the 550 if I was buying. But I'm most definitely not, neither are in my budget..lol
@@Jason-Samko The Toyota has a lower starting MSRP and thus will probably hold closer to that value long term. Pricing out the base LC LC in Canada with the softex, vs. the Overtrail means almost 25k difference. One other thing, I think the hybrid is better set to hold its value with the rising cost of gas.
@owenperry9937 nothing wrong with thinking any of that. I don't think any of that is true. But neither of us know until 5 or 7 years from now when we see how it goes.
@@Jason-Samko You're right. Multiple ways to think about it, and neither of us is a psychic.... Overall, the Overtrail is sick, I just think the brand cache is a bit too bougie for an off-roader.
I can't stand them. Added weight, added complexity, loss of storage, and more of a pain to sell later on. I have zero interest in a hybrid. I know some people like them and nothing wrong with that. But I want nothing to do with them. And then being forced to get a hybrid in a vehicle with no other engine option is bs.
Comparatively this 550 with the v6 turbo is alot of vehicle compared to the lc for very close price. I can see why this might be a tough decision for people to make
I totally disagree, Lc just looks ten times better. I truly hate the spindle front end. I have owned 5 different Lexus over 20 years. Tired of the ugly front end. I have the Lc Fe coming in this month.
Might not disagree. We had the LC hot Hawaii. So I saw two LC and saw a GX. I might happen to think the LC will end up being more desirable in the end. Lexus is going to dilute the brand too heavily with the GX. Also no wood steering wheel. Those days are gone. I actually asked if the LC’s were available they said no. But said only 9 more on list and then I can score one. I love Lexus. But just not thinking I’m going LC for some reason. Maybe because I have a 200
Guys a lot of this is just all hearsay. I’ve seen both as they landed in Hawaii. The LC looks better in person than one would think. Also the GX kinda looks a little girly to me. The LX600 doesn’t but this GX looks a little too chic to me. The LC at least looks a little more “masculine” to me. You’re gonna see tons of older women driving the GX 😂 and when you pull up next to one you’re gonna cringe and curl up. A lot lower probability a woman owns the LC…. Just saying
4 CYC HYBRID IS THE SETUP OF MY PRIUS BEFORE. SO THE NEW LAND CRUISER IS JUST A PRIUS WITH A LAND CRUISER BODY. WELL GM MIGHT AS WELL BUILD A GEOMETRO WITH A TAHOE BODY.
I had 2 geo metros one I bought new in high-school and one I bout used as a commuter in my late 20s. Both ran to over 200k miles trouble free before I sold the first one and the second on was totaled in an accident.
You must not have shopped a Toyota brand lately. You can’t configure and order either as dealers are “allocated” vehicles and you “take what you get”. Also, maybe consider telling your viewers “why” you don’t like the hybrid system. There’s compelling arguments on both sides but all you offer is “I don’t like it”??
@TRONABORON yep I will fight to not own a hybrid as long as I can. I don't mind the turbos, but want nothing to do with hybrids. Andnin the land cruiser apparently Japan does not want the hybrid either. They get the diesel lc there now! I want that!
@@Jason-Samkofor you a hybrid might actually be good. You trade so frequent you won't have to deal with the downside of long term ownership. That's what bothers me is the "what if". In 5 or 10 years
