Dude, thank YOU. I'm 10 times a better guitarist than I was a year ago because of you. You're carrying Tony's flame and it's getting hot in here. All the love.
Your channel is like one big TR tribute. Tony will live on in every TR lick we learn from you playing on acoustic guitars around the world! where the soul of man never dies :)
Marcel, Thanks for sharing. I know above all, the word is a better place because You, Tony and others cared enough to share. I am a new bluegrass fan. I am a fan of all music but Bluegrass seems to strike a cord for me. I feel its important for us to know where one another comes from, it helps understanding each other much better.. Peace,, BBBG
I came up in the southern rock era, outlaws, almann bros. etc., Smoking electric guitar slingers. Acoustic guitar was Fogelberg , Paul Simon, strumming Eagles tunes kind of strummy chick songs sensitive campfire stuff. lame for a young man. Then I heard Tony Rice, acoustic playing with Swagger. Ballsy playing. Changed my taste immediately. Pivotal players in my life were Parker, Trane ,Leibman and Tony Rice. Never stole even 1 of his licks and that guy still had a huge influence on my playing. I'm an old guy now, God fearing man and pretty well aquainted with folks passing away. I get it totally that that's all our fates. But when some people die, even if we don't know them personally, it seems to take us all 1 step closer to our own death. So always take the high road , be a better man today than yesterday and pass along this great gift of music we've all been blessed with.
Love you Marcel. I've only been into bluegrass for about 3 years out of my 32. And I promise I'll play it from here on out, for sure. Your Tony Rice licks always inspired me. That's why I like grass.
Well said, Marcel. I first found Tony Rice music early 80's. Followed him ever since. Have many of his records. Saw him live several times. Had my kids with me at a show at the Birchmere in Alexandria, VA in 2002 when he was playing with Peter Rowan. A waitress invited my kids backstage to meet Tony along with Peter and Vassar Clements. They all have his autograph on napkins. Thank you for all the work you've done to bring Tony's amazing talent to more people.
Never forget the first time I heard Tony, his live version of church street blues. Been a big fan ever since, and greatly influenced by his guitar style. RIP Tony
Sad news. Though I am a gipsy jazz player I have a lot of respect for the great bluegrass players like Tony, Doc and Norman. Keep up the good work Marcel and lets keep Tony alive through his music!
It's been a difficult year, so many of my heroes and friends have gone on to the Big Jam in the sky. God bless us all. Good to see ya Marcel... hang in there
Hey, Marcel, Firstly, thanks so much for the "Swing 51" transcription. It is singularly poignant to me as the first transcription, more precisely, the chord changes, I had was given to me by Tony himself. Back in the late 70s, I was working for Guitar Player magazine when it was still in Saratoga, California. One of the editors, Dan Forte, was tight with David Grisman, and he always got us all backstage at the Great American Music Hall in SF to see the original Quintet. I saw Tony play with them several times, and once before the concert, we were chatting Tony up and I asked him about the changes to "Swing 51." He picked up a scrap of paper and wrote them out for me. I still have that somewhere. Also, that night, or some other (it was 70s, after all) we all met Stephane Grappelli when he was playing with DGQ. Great memories. By the way, I imagine you know this already, Rick Ferris of Special Consensus is a true Tony Rice apostle and you can close your eyes and hear Tony in his playing. That band plays the absolutely free Frankfort (Illinois) Bluegrass Festival in July each (not 2020 obviously) as well an annual November concert and Down Home Guitars of Frankfort. One of the finest bluegrass concerts you will ever hear. We will not see another Tony Rice. One or two bars tells the tale. Thanks again for your work. Tom Brislane, Beecher, Illinois tbrislane@aol.com
We are all dealing with this in our own way. I know I speak on behalf of other Tony fans when I say that you carry the torch for the next generation of bluegrass guitar fans. Thank you for your interpretation of his work.
Miss ya man, such a tragic thing that had to end a horrible year. I love ya Man! Let's pick soon! You have done so much for Tony's music, and everyone cares so much about you for doing it!
Thank you for giving all of us the gift of having a chance to learn the legends music, and for that. thank you, Marcel. What a gift Tony was. Hang in there buddy.
I was blessed to live and grow up around Tony, I live in Reidsville NC, was born here, I’m now 60, he went to school with my brother. We lived less than 2 miles apart. We had a bluegrass park about 15 miles from our house for years, as we were growing up. Everyone knew while he was young, that he was going to touch lives. He will be missed. God bless
It's amazing to me that Tony inspired people from all walks of life and different countries to be the best guitarist they could be. I never met Tony or even saw him play in person. But I still catch myself crying from time to time. He will be missed.
Both you and Tony are my inspiration and I think you do him service more than anyone I know. Great job marcel, if he were still here, y’all would be great friends and players together. Godspeed marcel, and keep up the work :)
Just wanted to say thank you Marcel im 52 and ive always been a TR fan but not figure out some of his licks or breaks i never could figure out the old home place break then i found your lesson and now since then ive grown leaps and bounds as guitar player and i owe it to you and of course TR hang in there my friend Gods speed
Upon learning of Tony's passing, one of my first thoughts was of you and how devastated you must be, Marcel. Of course, we were all stunned and saddened by Tony's sudden parting but none so much as you, I dare say. Nothing I can say to ease your grief and pain, but know this, that we are all thinking of you at this time. Sincere condolences to you, Tony's family and his many fans. The man may be gone but his musical legacy will live on, thanks to you and his many devotees to "the music."
My favorite Tony arrangement of Lightfoot, and looks like you have it down. I have never attempted any of his tunes, but will watch and learn. Thanks for honoring the Master and his life. I highly recommend Still Inside, his autobiography, and journey of his musical life. A true Legend, and humble soul.
You've shared so much of Tony's music for people like us. Tapping into your Tony Rice musical journey in short I was a budding flatpicker and singer when I discovered Tony Rice long ago but to this day I still play his versions at jams like You Don't Know My Mind, More Pretty Girls Than One, Old Home Place, etc or at home tunes like The Likes of Me, Church Street Blues, and Little Sadie. Manzanita is one of my "desert island" recordings. But as you said even though he had to stop playing and now his passing he left a body of work we can enjoy and for new fans to discover for a long time
I am glad I got to see him live once in Asheville back in 2003-04 (can’t remember exactly)... appreciate your thoughts, and your channel for keeping his music at the top of mind. He is a legend
I would love to play like Tony and know I never will but I sure enjoy trying .Thank you Marcel you will help to keep his music alive .Please keep up the lessons
Thank you Marcel, I've been looking forward to your thoughts about TR's passing , those are important to us, your fans and followers. You are eminently qualified to speak about the man and his music in any way you wish, and I'm certain all of your thoughts are welcome any time. Your love for the man and his music is displayed everywhere in your life I'm sure and is broadcast widely on your channels and social media (which I don't follow much.) I too encourage everyone who is interested to search out the Bryan Sutton video with friends on TR. Thank you Marcel for these many years of true enjoyment and learning, you've captured the essence of great teaching and love for a subject and it's practitioners. I wish you and your family the Very Best and Comfort in these dark days of January, thinking of you a lot all through the holidays. Hoping for a bit of smoked salmon for Sushi cat, comfort food and love to your you and all around you. So glad you got to move back east, loved it when you lived closer here on the wet coast, but completely understand the reasons for moving and the tremendous boost it has given your career. I cherish my vast collection of LP to Cassette to CD to DVD to digital etc of the man and his music, it's been a staple of my life. His music choices and people he allowed into his life guided my musical path and provided decades of enjoyment and comfort, We can all live with the man's creations forever, and wonderful folks like you help us ride that wave. Good Wishes to all your wonderful followers,
Sorry for the late post but I have watched this video since Marcel posted it. I love how Marcel paused at the end of the solo and let Tony's ending run stand alone. That touched my heart when I saw his reaction to that run. Huge respect to you Marcel.
Wow... I guess I should feel honored that I have lived in a different era than you and have been able to experience the “greats” live. Sometimes I forget how things have changed, and although there are new guys and girls coming up that are great, they are just emulating the ones I grew up seeing play live and followed around, and in rare occasions shared the stage with. I think I have only seen Tony 3 times, but each show was completely different. One was 1987 in Winfield, KS, and he had his brother with him and the band just did acoustic jazz. It was so clean and tight. I think he may have spoke 3 sentences the whole concert!
I love and appreciate the video. Tony's passing was a shock. I was reading the book "Inside" The Tony Rice Story and I remembered I had some pages I printed out and added to the book from Tony's wife Pam who shared some private stories how Tony courted her and often spoke to her through his guitar. Tony was more than a guitar player, as that's how he communicated with his fans and his family/friends. Everything that I play on guitar is reminiscent of something I picked up from Tony. That comes from a very transcendent and influential source that is very special. RIP Tony!
Every time I have my guitar in my hands, I find I'm either sounding somewhat like Tony or trying to figure out how not to sound like Tony, but there's no avoiding him. I'll never play like Tony, but I can't imagine what the acoustic guitar would be without his seasoning. His playing has somehow managed to flavor every aspect of my musicality. Thanks to Tony for altering all of the music I will ever create.
Marcel I just discovered and subscribed to your channel yesterday. I don't know how I didn't come across you earlier but I'm very excited to be viewing your videos as a fellow bluegrass picker and upright bass player. As you were playing Shadows I could see the emotion and loss through your eyes of our fellow picker Tony. Hurt most certainly brought me to tears. The first song ever heard Tony play was The Old Home Place which I still play with my bluegrass band to this day. From then on I was hooked. Thanks for sharing so much of your soul and look forward to many more of your videos and perhaps meeting someday. You are an inspiration!
PS Marcel: My favorite Tony Rice vocal is "John Wilkes Booth" on the Native American album, a song by Mary Chapin Carpenter. The lyrics are just superb and the guitar breaks perfect. Tom Brislane
Thank you so much Marcel. You’re as instrumental a part of my bluegrass journey as anybody alive. Tony’s the master but you’ve always been my teacher. My first note for note was a break from “dust in a baggie” but Tony’s break from “cold on the shoulder” was next. Always know how special you are to us mortals and keep up the good work.
Being shocked by Tony's passing I've been checking the internet since trying to find out any information about his situation. Like you I really appreciated and enjoyed Brian's tribute to Tony. We got to hear the true impact he made from his piers and close friend's. Flux had a nice tribute here on UA-cam with a lot of great pictures of the fella were all gonna so sorely miss.
I'm a guitar geezer, who has known of Rice's genius from so far back that I would be ashamed to admit to the time involved. I have always wondered why as a culture we are so wedded to pop fame versus real ability in music. I guess I'll never have an answer to that one. But, one good thing comes out of his untimely passing; something of an awakening to the value of his music, and the music of others who keep doing the "right" thing, that is making REAL music. Robert Jackson
Thanks Marcel. For everything. The first video I ever saw on your channel was breaking down “that one,” Tony Rice lick. I was overjoyed to see that someone was actually able to break down such a big part of his sound. Through the years since, your channel has only deepened my appreciation for Tony. You’re the best
Thanks for posting this, Marcel. I only found out yesterday and was so saddened. I've followed Tony since Blake & Rice and JD Crowe & the New South. A giant. You have done so much with your videos of his work, by the way.
Marcel- thanks for all you do,it makes a big difference to a wide range of kids, adults and communities all around the world. Think of that . Tony Rice managed to convey such a wide range of human emotion that we crave through his music. You've managed to unlock and share and now teach anyone this reservoir of joy, laughter, sadness, faith and inspiration to be a human. Your style of teaching is magnetic and flows quickly.you make it fun to learn.A rare talent. Through your efforts not only do we learn to play but you also give us Tony. - Thanks and don't stop!
I was learning rock guitar when in '84 my uncle played me some of Tony's early recordings from the 70's. I thought his acoustic playing was way cooler than what I was learning, and all I needed was an acoustic guitar! He's been my guitar hero ever since. I was lucky to get a personally signed copy of his biography at Bass Mt. Bluegrass festival a few years ago. RIP Tony.
Hi Marcel. Thank you for all you do on this channel. This channel will only grow in importance as we transition from studying the best alive to honoring a legacy.
Beautiful Marcel. I got into bluegrass as a young boy. My first hero was Doc Watson. That lead me to Norman Blake. I got to see Norman a few times in Huntsville AL in the early 90's. Him and Nancy sitting in the grass in big spring park jamming. This lead me to Tony. I have every recording he made. What a loss to the music world. I hope all of us who loved him will keep his music alive. RIP
Thanks for making this one Marcel. I said this earlier, but again- thank you for making this channel, and all the breakdowns and insight on Tony's playing. I learned about Tony Rice through your channel, and I'm so glad that I did. I remember finding your channel by looking for flatpicking techniques, and love Billy Strings, so I subscribed and started learning any breaks from him that you covered. When I finished learning the breaks you covered of Billy's, I was already hooked and started scouring your channel for more to learn, and of course was met with dozens of Tony's breaks, and techniques. The first one I learned was Don't Give your Heart to a Rambler, and just by doing that, my focus on learning to pick like Billy Strings had shifted to becoming a better bluegrass musician altogether. I've improved more than I thought possible in just a year- and I have Tony's playing, and your love for his music to thank for it.
I love all the transcriptions that you do. Tony was a huge influence for all of us. The TR transcriptions that you do are second to none and I have learned many of his songs through you! May he Rest In Peace.
Thanks for the touching video, Marcel. And great playing at the beginning. Now that Tony is gone, I've been even more motivated to learn the tunes of his I've been wanting to for so many years. I learned Tipper a few days ago. Now I'm halfway through your great lesson on Waltz for Indira. You've got an invaluable library of lessons on here. I look forward to more. Let's keep his music alive!
My Grandfather LW Casteen was in Tony's Dad's (Herb Rice) band The Golden State Boys. Tony was always very sweet and kind. Knew my Uncle's pretty well. Met him about 5 times. Studied his music as a teenager and on into my 30's. He will be missed.
Good tribute. Been waiting to hear from you. Thank goodness for recording technology and the wealth of material. We were lucky to live in the same time as Tony. Stay well.
Tony was a man who made me know what’s bluegrass... As foreigner, understanding bluegrass music was difficult but he showed me a way... I am still praying for him and R.I.P From Korea...
Wow! He really was/is important in your life...My friend Fred, who took guitar lessons from Mike Marshall in Auburndale Florida, turned me onto the David Grisman quintet in about 1977. I was absolutely hooked. Wow!! Years later, one of my musical highlights was getting to see Doc Watson & Tony Rice performing at the same festival (telluride) - the only time I would ever see either perform live. A lot of music, a lot of memories. Good memories...
Man that video was so real and from the heart. I've learnt so much from you having only gotten into Bluegrass and Tony Rice about 2 months ago. Thanks for the work that you do Marcel. I can't wait to see your content and hear more of your amazing playing. Tony Rice lives on through all of us - but especially you in my humble opinion. Take care Marcel, all the best.
Thanks for sharing your story about discovering Tony Rice. I look forward to continuing my own exploration of his music with your videos and passion and knowledge. Thanks for what you do.
Good video Marcel, it’s a sad loss, and an amazing legacy. Thank you for providing such forensic insights into Tony’s playing, keep up the good work! Look after yourself.
Thanks for sharing your Tony stories -- he was a legend, an I feel like I know him better from you breaking down his licks, breaks and style on this channel. Peace.
Nice video Marcel, glad you are alright. I wondered about when we would see something but figured you just needed some time. Ironic that I received the shirt you're wearing not long before Christmas. Proud to keep wearing it!
It was Eddie Van Halen that inspired me to pickup the guitar for the first time some 38 years ago, but folks like Tony Rice that inspired me to keep at it and inspired me just as much. Hard to believe these two men have passed. The news of Tony’s passing was tough. Tony will be missed but so thankful we can still be inspired by the music he left behind. Thanks for all you do Marcel, you are quite inspiring too.
Too bad you didn't get to see Tony Rice perform live when Tony was still young and the tunes that have become iconic were still fresh and new, rather than legacy classics - I saw him perform at bluegrass festivals in the 1970 when he was still the hot new arrival on the scene dazzling audiences with his guitar and vocal skills.
The Tony Rice rulz fan group has info for donations. John Dill knows some of the family I believe.
Thank you for this info
I live in the same town as Tony. He was a friend and a very good man.
Tony Rice changed my life. He made me feel like music, and guitar is new again. He pulled me out of a very long rut with music. R.I.P Mr Rice
The look on your face while playing Shadows sums up exactly how I feel. Nice job, Amigo. Blessings.
Man, Tony really felt immortal, time to listen to the pizza tapes for the 50th time this week. Take care Marcel.
I saw Tony Rice live in person at Merle Fest back around 2013. I feel very grateful. Wish I could have seen more.
Marcial, thank you for all you do to bring Tony Rice music to us❤
I named my guitar after him, he’s been my number 1 inspiration when learning to play guitar...such a legend 😞
Tony's playing completely changed my view of bluegrass and even country music in general. God speed man.
I came up in the southern rock era, outlaws, almann bros. etc., Smoking electric guitar slingers. Thx for carrying the torch for Tony Rice! I would've never guessed that you didn't see him play live at some point.....
Tony was my friend for over 30 years. He was a so speciL human being.
Love you Marcel. I've only been into bluegrass for about 3 years out of my 32. And I promise I'll play it from here on out, for sure. Your Tony Rice licks always inspired me. That's why I like grass.

That was a very poignant recollection of your discovery of Tony's music. Bless you, and heal with time.
Some people move the world in and around you. Tony was one of those people. His impact makes the loss more tough. My condolences Marcel
Shadows is my favorite song to play right now. Both the gordon lightfoot and Tony rice versions. RIP tony😞

Glad to have someone like you to carry Tony’s legacy
Hey Marcel, thanks for sharing such heartfelt love of TR and his music. You're a good man.
Hi Marcel! Sorry for the loss! Love you!
R.I.P. Tony RICE🙏
Marcel, people like you and Bryan Sutton are a tribute to Tony just by doing what you do. Thanks so Much!
Oh man, i love Tony Rice and the one you play Shadows its so good.. thanks for your channel man , from Montreal
Rest in Peace Tony!
Thank you buddy.. Sad days for sure. Take good care of yourself.
Very lovely comments, Marcel.
Thanks for posting this, Marcel. I only found out yesterday and was so saddened. I've followed Tony since Blake & Rice and JD Crowe & the New South. A giant. You have done so much with your videos of his work, by the way.
Marcel, thank you for all you are doing to further Tony's legacy to people who are just discovering him and for all your fantastic playing!!
Hey Marcel , been checking out your internet lessons for a few years ... thanks again , I’ve been following Tony’s career for years too , what a blow!
My mother and daughter's birthdays are 317! To hear you tell your connection with it was really cool!
I love all the transcriptions that you do. Tony was a huge influence for all of us. The TR transcriptions that you do are second to none and I have learned many of his songs through you! May he Rest In Peace.
Excellent!
Awesome! Great job! Hard song to play!
I thought about you as I was weeping about Tony and listening to 0044 the day after Christmas. ❤️
Rest In Peace Mr Rice
Good tribute. Been waiting to hear from you. Thank goodness for recording technology and the wealth of material. We were lucky to live in the same time as Tony. Stay well.
Tony was a man who made me know what’s bluegrass... As foreigner, understanding bluegrass music was difficult but he showed me a way... I am still praying for him and R.I.P
From Korea...
Goodluck Marcel!
Thanks for sharing. Your tee shirt made me smile.
Rip tony. If I can only play 1/100 of how do you played I will be satisfied.
Thanks for all your hard work, Marcel.
Very nice rendition
Thanks for sharing your Tony stories -- he was a legend, an I feel like I know him better from you breaking down his licks, breaks and style on this channel. Peace.
Nice post. Not nice to lose a hero. Sorry for you and us. Sad time. but music fills in the gaps and cracks left by bad things. Love your videos.
Sad! Thanks a lot Marcel.
Was literally going over Marcel's transcription of Church Street Blues when I got the news Tony was gone
Nice video Marcel, glad you are alright. I wondered about when we would see something but figured you just needed some time. Ironic that I received the shirt you're wearing not long before Christmas. Proud to keep wearing it!
Another legend gone, Peace ✌️
It was Eddie Van Halen that inspired me to pickup the guitar for the first time some 38 years ago, but folks like Tony Rice that inspired me to keep at it and inspired me just as much. Hard to believe these two men have passed. The news of Tony’s passing was tough. Tony will be missed but so thankful we can still be inspired by the music he left behind. Thanks for all you do Marcel, you are quite inspiring too.
Perfect memories!
R I P Tony Rice
Too bad you didn't get to see Tony Rice perform live when Tony was still young and the tunes that have become iconic were still fresh and new, rather than legacy classics - I saw him perform at bluegrass festivals in the 1970 when he was still the hot new arrival on the scene dazzling audiences with his guitar and vocal skills.
