    Great idea. I came here for just this!! After watching you l, I can't help but offer one little piece of advice. Maybe after you're done with the checkerboard, doing a diagonal cut in the middle similar to when you're round the edges? That would open a small hole up and allow you to break off the surrounding ones a bit easier.
    That's only a theory though because I have not done that. Beautiful work though!!

    I just used a large bean can and charcoal. Burned it about 5 times and it was effortless

    Cut again at 90 degrees then diagonal ,then clean up with chisel.🙂

    Just a thought. I watched another fellow cut timber lengthwise for a different project. He advised to not cut as deep and make several passes to cut into the stump. The sawdust bogging up and additional resistance slows the chain. Your method of burying the blade deep and moving across appears easier on you, but his might be faster and easier on the chainsaw. Really helpful video though.

    I bought a 16" long drill bit. Going to try drilling about 50 holes ALL the way through a 16" tall log (about 1" apart around the perimeter) and then using reciprocating saw toconnect all the holes together and the big round inside should just come out.

    I do this but for bird nesting boxes too. Suggestion....... instead of all the bashing with the sledge hammer, try using the saw on a tapered angle and the pieces come out freely as wedges. AND - safety FIRST- keep your kids away from you whilst a live saw is in operation.... you'll live to regret it if a kickback sends the blade into one of them.......Put your brain in gear man.....

      Hey Jim. Thanks for the tips. But not sure where it was unsafe with my boys....

      @@VincesDIYs Here in Australia a "safe work area" must be maintained when using a chainsaw, this is standard procedure as:-
      "5. Do not allow other persons to
      be near the chainsaw when
      starting or cutting with the
      chainsaw. Keep bystanders
      and animals out of the work
      area."
      in general this is a minimum of 30 feet or in confined areas at least 10 feet and visible to the operator.... You will remember this after you witness a saw sinking into someones body. Safety cannot be overstated...
      I have many saws and at 71 and a lifetime of experience, I still wear my safety gear, including cut resistant chaps.
      Jim
      PS - I lost a son to a industrial accident which was preventable if a safe work area had been maintained.... by others.

      Fair enough! I believe I was being safe with my children - we were not falling trees etc. But I have since bought chaps and more safety gear. Thanks for the advice.

      I think he's suggesting more cuts ,at angles chipping away with chainsaw going easy on the blade ,Sounds,correct and safer..🙂👌

    Great project, thanks for sharing. Bummer about that one that split though. Maybe I missed it but what kind of chain are you using, is it ripping chain? Those are some really nice chips coming out!

    • @VincesDIYs
      @VincesDIYs  4 роки тому +2

      Just using full chisel chain on both, but a skip chain on the larger saw. You really see long shavings when cutting with the wood grain.

    Nice video. Can I use green wood to make this? Or will I have to wait for it to dry first?

      I think green wood should be fine, mine was relatively fresh. Just may crack a little in the future.

    I made a few myself. After you cut the checker board pattern, it will be less efforts if you put a piece of burning coal in the centre and use a hair dryer to burn the hollow.

    • @VincesDIYs
      @VincesDIYs  4 роки тому +1

      Nice idea! I guess it may take a bit longer but definitely less effort :)

      @@VincesDIYs it doesn't take long. With the hairdryer on max, it's like a rocket stove. The charred inside gives it a rustic natural look and provides protection from rotting.

      I used old tree stumps with their bark naturally peeled off. After I made the hollow, I slightly charred the body in open fire, then fine-sand the surface, applied a coat of vegetable oil to bring out the contrast in sanded. Afterwards screwed a metal flower pot stand bought from dollar store. I put them around my deck and my wife was impressed.

    5:00 you could of just screwed that back together. in fact whenthe log is split in 2 or more pieces it's very easy to hollow it out and then just screw a piece of plywood to the bottom, could of saved a lot of work!

    What type of chainsaw blade are you using? Mine really struggles to cut in a perpendicular angle .

    • @VincesDIYs
      @VincesDIYs  3 роки тому

      Bar and chain are listed in the description. Make sure to keep downward pressure as you cut - don't push in the log with the nose, especially with the top half.
