    Stumbled across this. Being from Liverpool myself, I particularly appreciate this. Of course, they were both superlative singers. Sadly, I never heard Rita Hunter live, but I did hear Alberto R at ENO and met him afterwards in an Italian restaurant next to ENO. Utterly charming, and loved his strong Liverpool accent which reminded me of my childhood. Lovely man, who never lost touch with his roots.

      I encountered Alberto at a London Wagner society meeting. He displayed a wickedly irreverent sense of humour and such a sunny, boyish persona that is seemed when he played the young Siegfried he wasn't really acting at all!

    So many treasures to be found here! Thank you, Mairwyn, for all of the care and love and skill which you invest in this most worthy endeavour! Her esteemed colleagues are likewise honoured by their presence here as we remember Dame Rita's art in this larger context. They were giants! We are humbled. ❤

      They were indeed giants. As big as the gods and goddesses they portrayed.

    Mairwyn, thanks a million for posting this superb performance. Goodness gracious, we love your mother’s singing! I heard her at the Met in Götterdämmerung, March 18, 1974. It was her second performance in the house. Not only did she have the blazing high Bbs, Bs, and C, she had great middle and low notes. There have been very few sopranos who sang that role with the beauty and STEADY ease your mom sang it. Brava, dear Ms. Hunter. All best greetings from Delaware, USA!

    Dear Mairwyn, so many fond memories of hearing your mum in Sydney (Brunhilde, Abigail, Norma, etc). Met her and you and your dad then. Rita was living in Mosman at the time. So loved her voice and amazing charm.

    What wonderful memories this brings me. l am a declared non-Wagner fan. But l went to this concert because l knew it was going to be wonderful, and it was more than wonderful, it was sublime music-making. Remedios as Tristan, Elkins as Brangäne, John Shaw, Bruce Martin and Sir Charles conducting, what a night it was...l, the non-Wagner fun could not contain myself, by screaming bravos!!!
    l cannot believe that Rita sang lsolde before. Her voice was made for the role.
    This should have been recorded and realised to the public... You are not going to get a much better Tristan than this one. Bravi tutti,

    Hunter and Remedios in Tristan and Isolde was always for me "the one that got away" from ENO back in the day. The Antipodes were clearly luckier that those of us in the UK! Many thanks.

      She was going to do it. Her autobiography reads that she had a massive clash with Reginald Goodall and backed out because of it. Originally, these Tristans in Australia were going to be concert performances of Siegfried, but the AO changed it to Tristan.

      @@ritahunterlafavorita Yes, indeed. I have the autobiography which she signed for us at the Henley Festival shortly after publication! It was a present for my late mother who was a great fan. But it gave my wife the opportunity to tell her that she remembered the pantomime performances in Bolton. There is no doubt Goodall could be (how shall we say?) abrasive but the whole generation of UK based singers that emerged from the Goodall's Covent Garden Valhalla speaks to his impact on singing Wagner: no Bayreuth bark there. Having said that, how anyone followed his beat remains a mystery to me, particularly with the constant subtle rubato: orchestral rehearsals involved far more detailed talking to individual sections than many managements were prepared to pay for! I am guessing your mother could hold her own (being from Liverpool and all?) but I fear that, in the end, we all lost out.
      It is simply great to be able to hear these two great singer together in these roles. I have had to wait a long time!! Somehow I have to find four hours to listen to the whole thing. Once again thank you for your efforts.

    I saw them both, but never together! Imagine! I have the recordings at least!
    I actually met you once! I waited at the Liverpool empire stage door to get your mum's autograph (i knew I'd have to run at the end for my last train!) and you were with her. It was Twilight of the gods and Ken Woolam was her Siegfried, John Tomlinson was Hagen.

      What I have to say also is I’m not certain people can understand the emotion for a Son/Daughter of these amazing people when it comes to re living this, listening again then sharing it on channels dedicated to their wonderful parents who are no longer with us…

      @@RichardRemedios 100% Since starting this UA-cam journey in October last year, it has been a joy to do it, but it is hard work. Not the editing. Not the remastering. Not the graphic design. None of that is hard. The emotional journey is the hardest part. You and I were there for it all. Reliving it when they are gone is hard. They are no longer here to share this platform and see their Legacy continue. They aren't here to give us praise for what we do. We have to rely on what we remember. We have to rely on what we felt at the time. It was and is a "Magical Place" but it is sometimes painful to go back there. But we do it because, if nothing else, we were taught that even though it might hurt sometimes.....the show must go on

      I appreciate that it may be as tough for you to make this choice as for a parent to choose between his children, but do you find that you have a preference between this performance or your father's "live" Tristan in English with Goodall and Esther-Grey? I realize they're within a year of each other! FWIW, I find them both thrilling. Looking forward to your reply with much thanks.

    What a treasure. Thanks so much for this. Your mom sounds magnificent as she always does, just stunning singing and artistry. Alberto Remedios for me was THE number one Wagner tenor of his generation. NOBODY could touch him.

    • @ritahunterlafavorita
      @ritahunterlafavorita  Рік тому +2

      Many can't touch him even today! There was always magic in the air when these two performed together. It wasn't just in their singing. I was throughout the whole theatre. Right down to the foundations of the venue they performed in!

      @@ritahunterlafavorita Yes I completely agree 100% with you. That ENO Ring Commercial recording has been a cherished part of my collection since I was a kid and to me is possibly one of the most "beautifully and yet still heroically sung Ring Cycles" out there to easily stand beside the Solti and Karajan Ring recordings. Each with it's own flavor and style. Thanks yet again for everything you do. We all so appreciate you and your dedication to you mom's spectacular voice, artistry and legacy.

      Really appreciate your sentiments about my Father, I might be bias but agree, especially between 1968 and the early 80’s, if you put the word English in there, arguably the Best Wagnerian Tenor since WW2…

    Hello there, the guidelines you've laid down in your UA-cam channel are a tad forbidding but since you''re Rita Hunter's daughter, I suppose it's only fair to set them that way. I heard a bit of this. Your mum was a stupendous singer. You're right that it's no point comparing her to so-and-so since she never intended to surpass so-and-so but among collectors and connoisseurs, your mum has gained a place in the ranks of the great singers of old. Collectors and connoisseurs will eagerly hunt for your mum's work. Are there any surviving performances of her singing Isolde in English? She sings it well in the original language, of course, but I think it would have been even better when she sings it in English.

    • @ritahunterlafavorita
      @ritahunterlafavorita  Рік тому +2

      She never sang this in English at all. She "nearly" did, but it was not to be. Sorry about the guidelines. I just cannot handle trolls LOL and I have zero tolerance for them :D
