  • Hello! And welcome to the sixth season of Retrograde Amnesia, where we’re covering the original release of Final Fantasy Tactics and The War of the Lions. In the opening, information-loaded episode, we’re determining who is playing which version, ignoring Tactics Advance, pronouncing “Ivalice,” buying the mobile version, leaving Quest en masse, framing Tactics as another attempt at an Ogre, adding a sense of swashbuckling heroism, valuing 60fps, calling Matsuno for help, canceling a sequel, listening to commercials, reading old game magazines, applying elite hacks, hot-seating a past playthrough, getting lost in the Epic Center, relating Ogre Battle to IVF, and spawning Chris’ origin story. Be clever. Be ruthless. Be dead. This fantasy becomes reality: today.

FFT was my first Final Fantasy game. The plot was like if Shakespeare wrote a video game. I've also always just said Ivalice as "Ihv-uh-liss" as a kid.

I first encountered this game in the living room of a friend of a friend. I was tagging along and we were having drinks, and then I noticed it while looking over his game collection. I hadn't heard of it or seen any promotional material, so I asked him about it. This was well after FF7 (which he had in his collection) and just after FF8 released and I was making my way through it.
"It's really different. It's kinda weird," he said. Since we weren't really doing anything, I asked if I could put it on and while the conversation continued I made my way through the tutorial. As we all know by now the intro has a lot of story, and the text moves pretty slow. I found this pretty frustrating because I read fast and usually button mash to get through text. I even thought the game might have frozen a couple of times. But in retrospect I'm glad because this forced me to get into the flavor of the writing.
It was a weekend, so we had nothing going on and I actually got plenty of time with the game. This was the first tactics game of any sort I had played, so despite being very familiar with Final Fantasy a lot of this felt very new. By the time it was time to leave I was pretty engrossed with the game. If the guy whose house it was was my own friend I likely would have asked to borrow it. I remember my friend trying to talk to me for the rest of the evening and I just kept thinking, "Shut up dude, I played a great game today!"
The next day I found myself driving to various rental stores to see if they had it, until I found one a few miles away. The rental periods back then were only three days, but I marathoned the game almost to the end. I took it back and checked it out again, only to find that my build was completely inadequate for the end boss. I'd only employed one save file for the entire game, so I tried and retried that final battle about 50 times but never was able to beat it. Finally I took the game back in defeat, but it stayed with me. A couple of months later I was shopping for a game and the store I went to had a brand new copy. I took a long look at it, and then bought it. Took it home and started again from the beginning, with a better understanding of the mechanics and learning a bit more along the way (and using three save files this time). I managed to complete it this time, and I remember when I beat the final boss my blood was pumping like when I played Contra. This all happened in between Disc two and three of FF8 but I really fell in love with FFT

I've been listenting to the podcast for a few years but every season that's aired since I discovered it has either been for a game I hadn't played or a duo of games which I had only played one of (need Konami to materialize that Suikoden remaster so I can finally play Suikodem II). Excited to finally listen to a new season week by week (chapter by chapter, beat by beat)! Final Fantasy Tactics is one of my favorite games of all time and I'm excited to hear you guys experience it!

Had to back out for a couple seasons due to a crazy hectic work schedule and not having played the games you lads were playing. I like to at least watch the game cutscenes on UA-cam if it's a game I haven't played but I was knee deep in making video essays on Final Fantasy XI, Chrono Trigger fan games (if you want some good content you might want to check that out), and working 60 hours a week. However, I'm happy to say I'm back on board for this season having played Tactics multiple times in my life. Looking forward to all of these episodes. Cheers!

So excited to be along for this journey! Very curious whether the mechanics will click for Eric. Also whether the mechanics will get in the way of the fantastic story for him.

Episode 1 of Scenario Busters: Final Fantasy Tactics! Lets gooooooo!
I've never played the tactics games. The most exposure to the story I've had was the Return to Ivalice raids in FF14, if you count those(i don't)
Also nice job not changing the background boys haha. Even the youtube thumbnail wasnt changed earlier but it was when i finally got around to watching it so you get a pass there. Here's to a good season.

I haven’t played FFT since they refuse to rerelease it currently for some reason, so I won’t be listening to this season. But one day they will make it available and it and the podcast will 100% be my jam
What I do know about this game from Theatrhythm is that it has good music. And apparently several points where an unprepared player can just get totally stuck, so good luck with those
