    Back nearly 4 years ago, when I initially watched this video, it made me very depressed for quite some time, and despite the years passing, on the occassions it poped up in my feed, I still felt "hurt" being reminded of it. Not because of the nihilism, but because accepting the optimistic part automatically meant accepting the pessimistic part as well. Specifically if in the end, your mistakes, faults and suffering are voided, then the same is true for the opposite, all your struggles, victories, and goodness is also voided, I couldn't simply accept the positives and ignore the negatives.
    Perhaps because while I knew on an intellectual level that we (humans) are still part of the universe, on an emotional level, perhaps out of habit, we still differentiate ourselves from the world. When we say "the universe is large" we take the point of an observer, an outsider, similarly as to one might claim "humans are destroying nature", without being consciously aware that we're also part of nature, like a smoker knows smoking is bad, but still smokes.
    It took me a while to accept, on a subconscious level, that I'm part of the world/universe, which helped resolve my conflict. Despite the universe eventually ending, and nothing 'good' or 'bad' we do ever being remembered or having any sort of lasting or objective meaning, it doesn't mean that what we do in our lives, our successes and failures, don't matter. I'm not saying they have any actual greater meaning in the grand scheme of things, but simply that they have an impact by virtue of existing. And thus we, being an equal part of the universe as any great star or speck of dust is, have the ability to give meaning to something, simply by willing it. The apparent nothingness or lack of meaning given to us by the universe, is simply the default state we must accept in order to give ourselves the freedom to simply exist, and if we so chose, give personal meaning to what we wish to, because after all, while the universe as a whole doesn't care, the part of the universe that makes up 'you' does, and that's enough.
    After figuring that out for myself, I was able to understand and appreciate what this video truly had to say.
    ... So, I came back to leave a like :)

      This concept always freaked me out. I took points in time and thought about them later as a kid. For example when going on vacation for 2 weeks, I’m thinking beforehand that this time will pass and there’s a future me thinking about how I thought this 2 weeks ago. You can just connect these 2 time points and be like whooop and the time past, nothing you can do, if you just think about the 2 points it’s like in an instant. And if this short time frame passes you can just extend it to however long you want. You can do this with every birthday. Until you’re on the death bed, and thinking how you thought about it with 12.
      Why is now now?

      Humans!!....Don’t be ignorant if you are a thinker , Everything is a proof of god, our consciousness is a huge one,
      { Think deeply with logic and be honest to yourself and then reject or accept, understand and don’t bring hatred. }
      What is aiming there is a creator!!
      The balance of everything is a huge sign and aim that there is a creator.
      { your eyes, nose, lips are balanced }
      { Day and Night are balanced }
      { earth position in the solar system is balanced }
      { the colors of nature is balanced }
      [ see why the water has no smell either no taste or color, because every single alive plants or animals is from water }
      ( Just imagine water is blue )
      { the whole universe would be blue us animals, food, plants }.
      This could never be random, very impossible, and now the only argument you could bring to that is evolution select and choose just base on it instincts. I could agree on that point but We could both agree that the cells that created us and this life creation pathway have a specific guidance and a coding genes.
      The question will still remain the cells came from where, who created these complex cells that created our all life from the base to the sky? The coding came from where ?
      If your answer is that we actually don’t know, and you say you are a realist person and you don’t want make a step forward to take a side to an answer about it.
      { DON’T CONTINUE READ. cause you are not truthful to yourself… and you want to not bother yourself to the truth or trying to avoid this truth as much as possible - please don’t run from the truth, or atlesat consider it, i know it is hard - not easy to just change your life by changing your belief, god will hold you’re suffering if you let him }
      If you a man of logic, Our Consciousness in particular came from somewhere, you may say the cell, but from where the cell get the consciousness ?
      Who created the heavens and earth in your thinking ?
      I say it is God, the one, the powerful, the first.
      You know why god should be powerful and the first.
      Cause that is the most logical answer.
      Let me justify.
      The first suggestion is there is no first and no controller and owner, then our universes are infinite and they are never ending, an infinite chain, but though they create by an accident a dying universe and that is conformed scientifically and it is without any purpose.
      The other suggest is that god exist, everything is perfect, he is the first and created us for a purpose, and sent messengers to show his message with huge signs.
      You may say there is a lot of gods.
      All of these gods are either Idols that human did create by there hands and say it god, or animals like cows that we eat. And finally objects that humans thought they are stronger than them like the moon or sun and choose them to be gods.
      *All of them are vulnerable and won’t hear you or speak to you or help you in anything and you could try.
      What’s makes The one I am calling for special ?
      { He is Allah, the Creator, the Inventor, the Fashioner; to Him belong the best names. Whatever is in the heavens and earth is exalting Him. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise. }
      There is two ways to accept an idea, in my opinion one is a dark no point way, and there is a light faithful way.
      It is all about what you choice, what is your destiny. What you really deep down truly think ? Don’t let emotions and bad thoughts take you to a dark way.
      The only true god said..
      ( We will show them Our signs in the horizons and within themselves until it becomes clear to them that it is the truth. But is it not sufficient concerning your Lord that He is, over all things, a Witness?)
      That’s a challenge you need to see by yourself : -
      See {👇🏽}
      SMALL SIGNS
      God said:
      ( [He] who created death and life to test you [as to] which of you is best in deed - and He is the Exalted in Might, the Forgiving.)
      ( And they say, "There is not but our worldly life; we die and live, and nothing destroys us except time." And they have of that no knowledge; they are only assuming.)
      ( And when Our verses are recited to them, they say, "We have heard. If we willed, we could say [something] like this. This is not but legends of the former peoples." @ And [remember] when they said, "O Allah, if this should be the truth from You, then rain down upon us stones from the sky or bring us a painful punishment.")
      HUGE SIGNS BLIND WOULD SEE.
      *{ And the heaven We constructed with strength, and indeed, We are [its] expander.}
      “This verse support Space expansion”
      *{ Have those who disbelieved not considered that the heavens and the earth were a joined entity, and We separated them and made from water every living thing? Then will they not believe? }
      “This verse support the Big Bang and the fact that nothing can live without water”
      And another sign.
      Iron, I guess you know that as new science refers that iron isn’t natural to the earth, and didn’t not form in earth, but came down to earth from outer space. And scientists have found that billions of years ago, the earth was stuck by meteorites. These meteorites were carrying Iron from distant stars which has exploded on earth.
      Imagine what Quran said and hope you may be one of the ones who reason.
      Surah Al haded ( which means iron ) ( 25 )
      { …,And We sent down iron, wherein is great military might and benefits for the people,.. }
      And another one.
      { The Sky }
      It protects us from the sun radiation, freezing of space, and protects life on earth by warming the surface with heat retention.
      The protection proprieties of sky was discovered by scientific research in 20th century.
      Surah al anbyaa’ ( 32 )
      { And We made the sky a protected ceiling, but they, from its signs, are turning away. }
      Mentioned 1400 years ago,
      That is the book I am quoting from it to prove god, put these huge signs.
      Yahweh, god, Allah, The only, Elohim.
      { He is Allah, the Creator, the Inventor, the Fashioner; to Him belong the best names. Whatever is in the heavens and earth is exalting Him. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise. } Quoted from Quran.
      Jews, Christianity, muslims all received the same message which is to worship the only true god, Christians themselves don’t follow their book so that is why they say Jesus is god and a part of god “ the 3 in 1 god ” they put partners though god is one which is the father “his name in Christianity” and Jesus never said to worship him, he is a massager just like the one before him eat and go to sleep.
      What do you see?
      Who would have mention that in your opinion?
      Is it the prophet, who can’t read and write, living in a desert and was a Shepherd and even though he didn’t even mention his name in the book { that claims it is the word of god [ The Quran] except few ?
      The last guy who I talked with, said it is a mysterious texting.

      Hey, man. I suppose I can say I relate to how you feel. I have been dealt a heavy blow by a number of people I considered as loved ones, people I trusted and relied on - which has affected by psyche and rendered me depressed over the years. It's a really bummer, truly. One thing I found though, in the midst of all this noise, is that pouring my pains to Jesus makes me at ease. It may sound corny, but it is true.
      Humans can be harmful, and hurtful, but I have only experienced bliss and peace when with Jesus. My depression may come as a wave on a random occasion and totally rub me off course, but Christ has always been my anchor - and better than anyone has been able or is able to do.
      My encouragement to you would be to hold your head up and to out your trust in Jesus and cast your heaviness on him. Self-help scarcely helps, I bet you can tell, so consider Christ to look after you and help you through.

    I watched this video maybe 6 months ago. It both made me more depressed and less depressed (like one of the top comments said) but, as someone who has struggled with depression and suicidal thoughts for as long as I can remember, this video and it’s underlying message about “we might as well enjoy the time we are here” ... this changed my life. I carry this thought with me everywhere I go because it keeps me alive. I realize, if I’m going to kill myself, all I’m doing is ridding my opportunity of having any chance of a good time and a good LIFE. Nothing in all my experience and therapy had quite got through to me like that message did. I know this is really personal and kinda corny, but I just really felt the need to leave this comment. If the creators ever read this, thank you for this video, truly, from the bottom of my heart. It’s kept me alive, but also more optimistic than I’ve been in a long time.

      Inherent to this argument is a framing issue that doesn't take into account the utter absence of free will. There is a certain reason we used to believe that we were the center of everything, which is that this is *exactly* what it had appeared like. We had no control of that. The more we learned about the cosmos, the more we became aware of the fact that it isn't at all about us. This introduced a change in our perceptions of ourselves, one which sacrificed our anthropocentrism to a strong degree. It never was about us, but why does that matter?

      Like, here's consciousness, this massive mystery that also happens to be the only thing that makes meaning and value being literally true a philosophically reasonable position, and yet, you still choose this worldview that everything is just some extension of mechanism.
      It's actually not just stupid, it's actually batshit insane. But, batshit insanity is what you accept when you choose self-delusion.
      I would say I used to be a nihilist who did not choose self-delusion. I faced and embraced the void. I couldn't stand the self-delusional types then either. Actually it's not. It's not powerful at all. It's well narrated and illustrated, yes, but it's definitely not powerful; pitiful is more like it; deceptive would be most accurate.
      This video is simply a catchy promotion of empirical and relativistic skepticism - both of which are self-refuting. In addition, the informal fallacies are all over the place. For example, you don't get through 45 sec. before the author commits a post hoc (after this therefore because of this) fallacy when he dismisses, a priori, supernaturalism simply because we know more about the stars. In other words, there seems to be a claim that after we found out how the stars work we know there can be nothing supernatural at work. Here is a syllogism for this very faulty logic:
      1. If the stars are more than twinkling little lights, then there is no teleological
      explanation for them.
      2. The stars are more than twinkling little lights.
      3. Therefore, there is no teleological explanation for them.
      Not only does this faulty logic beg the question, commit some sort of post hoc fallacy or hasty generalization about scientific knowledge in general but it actually seems to me that the opposite (although not logically air tight) would be more probable.
      1. If stars are more than twinkling lights but instead are highly complex and serve a significant purpose in the ecology of the universe, then there is likely a teleological and intelligent source of their origin.
      2. Stars are more than twinkling lights and are instead complex astronomical bodies that serve a purpose/function in the universe (our sun is a great example).
      3. Therefore, there is likely a teleological and intelligent source for there origin.
      Either way you look at it, belief in the supernatural is no less warranted than naturalistic skepticism. Skepticism leads to nihilism - the loss of all meaning - and as humans we can only survive by seeking, learning, and knowing that we possess meaning. Therefore, optimistic nihilism is an oxymoron. If this is not seen at the beginning of one's journey into nihilism it will certainly be seen in the end.

      ( We will show them Our signs in the horizons and within themselves until it becomes clear to them that it is the truth. But is it not sufficient concerning your Lord that He is, over all things, a Witness?)
      That’s a challenge you need to see by yourself : -
      See {👇🏽}
      God said:
      1- ( [He] who created death and life to test you [as to] which of you is best in deed - and He is the Exalted in Might, the Forgiving.)
      2- ( And they say, "There is not but our worldly life; we die and live, and nothing destroys us except time." And they have of that no knowledge; they are only assuming.)
      3- ( And when Our verses are recited to them, they say, "We have heard. If we willed, we could say [something] like this. This is not but legends of the former peoples." @ And [remember] when they said, "O Allah, if this should be the truth from You, then rain down upon us stones from the sky or bring us a painful punishment.")
      4- *{ And the heaven We constructed with strength, and indeed, We are [its] expander.}
      “This verse talking about Space expansion”
      5- *{ Have those who disbelieved not considered that the heavens and the earth were a joined entity, and We separated them and made from water every living thing? Then will they not believe? }
      “This verse talking about the Big Bang”
      6- { Has there [not] come upon man a period of time when he was not a thing [even] mentioned? @ Indeed, We created man from a sperm-drop mixture that We may try him; and We made him hearing and seeing.}
      If you reached here and you didn’t at least consider believing in God, that’s for you, god said:
      ( Then which of the favors of your Lord do you doubt? {56} This [Prophet] is a warner from [i.e., like] the former warners. {57} The Approaching Day has approached. {58} Of it, [from those] besides Allāh, there is no remover. {59} Then at this statement do you wonder? {60} And you laugh and do not weep {61} while persisting in heedlessness? {62} So prostrate to Allāh and worship [Him]. “
      { Quoted from the Quran : Which claims to be the word of God and that it all correct before 1400 years old }
      Hope that god guide us all to the right path....

      So what is wrong with that? That’s the beauty of it. If you feel like my sentence makes any meaning to you then you can accept it or just deny it. World is balanced in belief and facts so we have to think about that too and don’t shove our belief of nihilism to others. You are quoting people in your comment because you think that their opinion matters to you, so they matter to you. As said earlier it's upto you to put values in whatever matters to you. But don't shove your opinions of what matters to you must matter to others, that is religion."
      Also, you are shoving nihilism down my throat with your quotes. I am not a man without purpose and belief. I am a man with purpose and belief that gives my life meaning because I think they do so(optimistic nihilism). I am not giving my life a meaning and belief because somebody said so in a quote. If you are saying total nihilism with no optimism is bad then I might disagree to some extent because not all cases roots to nihilism are bad.
      For example:
      we know from science and carbon dating that humans were first found around 1.4 to 2.5 million years ago.
      after human invented computer it's not even 2 centuries old and it already took us from a vaccum tube to a point where you have apple vision and neuralink time where we are capable of reading human brain signals and provide very high quality Augmented reality to users. Given another 1000/2000 years, that is a very very very small amount in a timeline of what human have already lived, we will reach a point where we will be able to simulate full brain and maybe we are already living in a simulation. So, if I believe in that fact then what is wrong in that. You cannot prove you are not in a simulation. I might be a person on the internet that your brain simulation is simulating to give you a sense of belief that you are having a conversion to someone. I may not be real at all.
      So, just straight out saying nihilism makes no sense is really absurd to me. It will depend what is your cause of accepting nihilism. Straight up saying something doesn't makes sense because it goes against what I belief is not what something I agree with.

      optimistic and pesimistic nihilism are the same, what changes is youre preception of them, we all know that we are a mere speck of dust in the whole universe so lets appreciate what we have and try to improve our society the best we can. That might sound contradictory but think about it, we are all just appreciating our time alive.

    The one thing I struggle with is the end. I know everyone dies, everyone’s story comes to an end as all stories must.
    Some peoples stories end sooner than later, some peoples stories are cut short…Some peoples stories last lifetimes.
    But the fear I have, is when mine will end. I’ve come to reason with my mind that I will die. Maybe sooner, maybe later. And that disturbs me greatly.. and many times I wish I didn’t understand what death is. I’d rather that everyone goes to a beautiful place in the sky, but I do know that it will be nothing. Empty, and nothing. There is nothingness in nothing, you will not know you are dead. You won’t feel pain, but all your memories, and who YOU are as a person. Who you’ve built yourself up to be, this idea of what you are, and who you are, are gone. Everything in the world that you have come to surround yourself with will have never existed. Your mind will be gone, and soon your body.
    I for one CANT come to peace with that, though I try. I spend my nights wondering why? Why should anything I do right now or later matter when I will be dead.
    I’d rather just do things that make me happy, why do I have to go to school? Get a job? Work my whole life? If it simply ends?
    We are on a rock, in a solar system, in a galaxy, in the universe. We are so small, our lives are SO small. And I find it intresting how people get caught up in their own lives, don’t they understand all this ideology that we have made up about what is right, what is wrong, what shouldn’t be done- doesn’t matter? Your opinions will die eventuality with you. So why does it matter if a biological women transitions to a male. He is so small to you, and to others. He isn’t bothering anyone, but people feel the need to have opinions on it? When this small matter has no effect, none, on the world?
    Nothing matters, and in that, in a sense- everything matters.
    Just some thoughts I thought I would write down. If you have opposing views, or agree, id love to discuss with you.

      @sandromestvirishvili3546 Рік тому

      Yeah.. we know all of us will die, it is inevitable, and we can't understand that, I mean our brains can't understand concept of death since our consciousness only exists in existence. If we really try to think what we were doing or feeling before our birth, it will create same sort of existential dread as in case of time after death. It was like.. boom and we are conscious out of nowhere, like all the billions of years or infinity if you wish, have passed before, it did not matter. Same will happen after death, but difference is that there won't be snap moment anymore, just.. well, can't really say how it will be. You are right that we can't "fix" this problem, no matter how much time we spend thinking about it. Our daily lives are far away from such ideas, we are so involved in many little things that we rarely think about such ideas. If now we are contemplating about our existence and meaning, tomorrow we will wake up and do regular things, because that's what actually is important, to stay alive at least, and then decide to have some sort of goal in our lives. I am pretty sure no matter how many years pass, every time I watch this video, same feeling will arise. Just right now I wanted to delete this comment, but then realized that it does not matter at all, so let it hang around here, I guess that's what optimistic nihilism is :)

      No, but think about it. We are the only conscious life that we know exist. Nothing else knows what it is or is self aware. Since we are a part of the universe and can look back on it, we can be considered the self aware part of the universe. It doesn't need us, but it's cool that it has us.
