I'm an artist, and my best friend is a nurse who works with geriatric patients. I've often told her I sometimes wish my life's work served humanity as directly as hers does. When i heard the bit about how art in hospital wards makes the patients feel a little better, it reminded me that we are both serving humanity in two, very complementary, ways. Thank you for making this wonderful video.
as an engineer I am very very very aware of the importance of aesthetics in my work. I would say, now that you've acquired this information it is your duty to try to work to get those hospital wards more beautiful. The results of those studies, if you read them, were not small. They were immensely significant. Statues, wall art, natural beauty such as flowers etc and even the colors of walls all are known to reduce pain and hospital stays somehow aiding in our psychological wellness and in healing speed. I hope you can use this to start a movement, no movement is small. A hurricane often begins with a gentle breeze.
@MARES OF TRACE - The emergency department of Cape Cod Hospital has many beautiful, large oceanscapes by a single great artist. They are all appear to be originals (not those glicees). and the placement isn't random, but well thought-out and consistent. They did an excellent job utilizing artworks. [I haven't been to other areas of the hospital, so cannot comment further.]

+Shivam Bansal The Same Rule of Beauty Applies To Everything. Edit: It's Just Like What Bill Gates Quoted:"..A Win-Win Situation." Everyone Gets A Taste of Beauty 🙏
Can absolutely vouch for this. My city is absolutely gorgeous, and I think it really boosts my mood. One time I redecorated my bedroom to look more unique to my tastes, and I suddenly found myself in a better mood than before. This exact principle is why I want to study interior design, I think the way it changes our mood is just so interesting.
This entirely explains why I adore flowers. They are absolutely nothing more than beauty for us to witness and enjoy growing on this earth *for free* The way their colors/shapes tantalize our eyes, the way their smells make us feel happy and relaxed, their abundance in fields all in uniform. Truly, they are fruits of the earth. Seriously I'll never get over how something so natural and innocent can come at no cost.
i don't even feel that much of an affinity with flowers personally but this description really made me smile. i love learning about how simple things can make people so happy :-)
it has to do with round edges and not having many sharp corners. i learned that by watching my lilo and stitch dvd as a kid so many times that i watched the "how its made" thing and found that out
I live in a desert region, when it rains the smell and the noise of the rain make me happy, while other people don't like the rain, in my region we almost contemplate it
i live in a place with close to 250cm of rain - i still die for it because it rains for like 4-5 months of the year and it's so hot otherwise (also it makes everything look nicer aha)
I live in a rainy region of my country, it rains several times, as it is a big city, the sky is very cloudy, there are days when I can barely see the sun
To me, rain makes me happy. Not just because of the sounds, sights and smell, but because of the fact that even with all that rain pouring in front of my eyes, it isn't even a fraction of how much is truly pouring. In a weird way, that comforts me.
The fact resonates with me, I feel tired/depressed after working in a bland environment for long time, I have to go out in nature for breaks even if it is just backyard, when I do so I feel a bliss as good as being high. The other way around I go work in Cafe, parks etc. Anyone else have similar needs?
I do! :) When I am searching for a new job, I always focus on the esthetics that goes with it - how the office and building looks like, would it be nice to commute in there, would my colleague have a pleasant nature etc. Being from Prague it keeps me wrk almost only in the city center as the suburbs are sad (full of bland blocks of flat, really depressing).
I feel like this is why moving around furniture in your room feels so nice (how all the new configurations and patterns are new and refreshing, giving you a chance to once again realise the beauty of the patterns and symmetry coinciding with your furniture)
The reason I watch this channel is because of the animations they have, they clearly spend their time to make their animations as beautiful as possible. -also for the knowledge-
Then ure no better than 5 yo . clearly the animation is the tool to explain the information. Maybe cartoons more suitable for u , beautiful animation and i doubt have any information.
Wow, I never realized that beauty is a mechanism rewarding you for looking around when there isn't necessarily anything important to look at. If you're inclined to just look around all the time, then you're more likely to discover important things when they are there, and finding the world around you beautiful does the trick
@COLBY MOODY Yeah, and you took too long to reply, a-hole 🙃 You're still carrying out the joke weeks later but it's not any funnier than the first time.
@@RosheenQuynh Just ignore that ungrateful peace of garbage. Their minds are not capable of thinking outside the box. Btw, loved how you analyzed this video, it truly is amazing how our brains are built to notice such beautiful things around us.
2 days ago YT instantly recommended me this video when it's released but I just shrugged and said "eh I'll watch it later". I guess I'm scared of beautiful things :D
This honestly is one of my favourite videos you guys have made. I've quite recently finally connected the dots. The circumstances on my life have been very good. I won't go too much into detail but in general I have everything I need. And a lot of things I want. But I still feel really depressed for some reason. I will be soon moving out of my apartment and one idea where I would move would be my summer cottage, I had other options but they were much more expensive so I rather did not take them. So I went there for a week to prepare for me to move in and testing how feasible is living there. I enjoyed the time there, I was much less comfortable there yeah since it lacks most modern comforts. But I was happy there. Once I returned to my dull concrete box of a apartment I immediately felt my mood drop. It was like a train hit me. A few days later i thought about it and realised most likely it's the environment that's causing this. At that moment I realized, no matter how much modern comforts I have no matter how much material belongings I have, no matter how much money I have I will never have a happy life if I live in a ugly environment.
Me, trying to convince my principal and parents to allow students and me to decorate the school and our house in russian, using a video on english from channel with an german name. Hello from the MotherLand Russia.
@@MrLlama-bz2yh Really? In my country, it is common that every year, the graduating students paint a wall of their school. Doesn't matter which theme (need to get the ok from the director beforehand though), or what kind of graduation they have or if the wall is inside or outside the building. In my old school, they even painted on the floors of the school grounds and on pillars. Only exception are, of course, the parts of a school building that are put under monument protection. For my old school, that was just the outer facade and inside the decorative parts and stucco work. No problem painting on the inside walls and even ceiling around them.
When my father showed me gold and told me its value I felt nothing but when I see a beautiful cloud passing during sunset I chased after it just to take a glimpse. Yes, beauty makes us happy.
if your father showed you that as a child then its understandable but if you're an adult and get happier seeing clouds than gold then you're mentally underdeveloped because recognizing the value of money is one of the biggest parts of maturity
As a professional artist I've given this a fair amount of thought. Beauty is the process of creating a discernable pattern and then breaking that pattern but only far enough to create tension between opposites. The more you can break the pattern without actually breaking the overall pattern the better you are at it. In the end no matter what kind of art it is the final product has to interact with itself in such a way that nothing can be added or taken away without ruining the harmony inside the work. The harmony is the dynamic effect of opposites creating tensions in ways that go round and round. Music exists in time. Painting in a space. Literature in patterns of meaning. They all depend on composition. It has to do with how our brains work, probably because of the kind of patterns we find in nature which are similar to this in effect. I'm sure that wasn't very helpful, sorry I'm not a writer. I think it's a coincidental side effect of our massive ability for pattern recognition.
I thought that was very well-described. It works this way in dance, too. Dance forms tend to come from repetitive practical tasks (dances based around picking fruit, for example), but what makes it a dance rather than a task is the variation within that original theme that inspired it.
I think you have captured this -dare I say - beautifully. Without the break in the pattern, there is nothing to draw our attention but if there is no discernible pattern at all we are just left confused and frustrated.
@@Jasper-nk5fo Beauty in words, beauty in music, and beauty in movement, all part of this comment thread, yet somehow completely absent from the video. No mention of beauty other than that experienced visually. @Hugo Maritz even used the musical/physical concept of harmony to describe the whole of a beautiful piece of art. It's hard to discuss beauty itself without leaving the visual realm, but Kurzgesagt did it in this video.
i hope this video inspires more people to make art & others to stop being rude when someone wants to pursue art. it IS useful, a world without art is literally depressing according to *science* ❤️
When you mentioned "eye tracking software shows people keep focusing on details and ornaments of architecture," I started to notice myself doing it; interesting.
Sidenote: It is mostly due to moving lines and dots appearing on the "pretty" building - at least in this particular case. Our eyes tend to be attracted by movement. It has an evolutionary basis as it helps to detect animals in the wilderness. My guess is that folks in Kurzgesagt used this phenomenon to let you experience their argument about beauty in just a few seconds. This feeling makes you remember their argument and video for longer. And it really is super clever when you think about it! ;) Well, the amount of work needed for these videos amazes me every time I see them. Keep it up (but with birds, please)!
The eye tracking software was developped for marketing purposes. When you want to sell a product, the design will define if it is visible enough amongst others. You can rent a "fake market/lab research" where someone is asked to wear the eye-tracking device, and it will help to define if your product is visually catchy enough. If the person didnt look at your product at all you might consider redesigning it
Need the birds. I plan on donating, and I heard I'd get my own bird if I did. I want to see it die by horrific ways in your videos........ Uh... I mean, I want to see the birdy in your videos...
yeah the ducks were at the backstage contemplating paintings and the intro wasnt really with the subject this was more ethical/esthetical than astronomic (also it was really sciency, obviously).
"Beauty is nothing tangible, it only exists in our heads as a pleasant feeling". As long as you feel confortable with youself, you can consider yourself a beautiful person.
Ty for covering this unerrated but very important topic. Beauty has rational and objective value. As a person that suffers from major depressive disorder, I can also tell, that beauty one of the strongest and longest lasting antidepressants there are, even when everything else fails.
now this is the kind of ad i want to see- related to the video, shows off something people who click the title/thumbnail will actually be interested in, and is for a display of art/cool thing, not an online service or mobile game. I understand war of the clash-vikings might pay more but it's great to see better ads.
I’m an going to school to become an architect and this is so applicable and inspiring. The most inspirational things always tend to be patterns, symmetry, balance, and things that remind us of natural forms. It’s crazy that feeling that we all naturally have for this can be traced back to the DNA we are composed of.
You will have problems in school, teachers will hate you for liking beauty because in their minds anything is beautiful, especially innovative and ugly architecture.
That’s a part of it but I think beauty is beyond scientific explanation, things can be beautiful in a very unexplainable manner, for example one may consider looks (not faces but expressions) to be beautiful, beauty comes from a realm outside our own and we get only an infinitely small glimpse of what true beauty it.
My mom traveled a little before she died and after it was like she finally saw the beauty in the world and started to appreciate it. It just breaks my heart that it was Death that made her finally see it, but if that’s what has to happen to her or any of you understand it is your loss, not ours.
Kurzgesagt never change, never leave. Yours are the most pleasant educational videos. Sometimes the information is lacking, but that's a boon, since it's meant to inform about general subjects, and inspire curiosity. And despite the slow general pace, you can feel the deep level of understanding, effort, and informed research that goes into it. It has the feel of a mastered subject being explained on simple terms. I love them so much, I always gush to people about the year 12,018, and you gave me a term for the philosophy I had come to on my own but didn't know it, optimistic nihilism. That's why I say, never stop, never compromise. I'm a fledgling educator, and when I have the means I intend to donate and contribute to you whole-heartedly to give back for what you've given me, and inspire my students to love knowledge, truth, and learning.
As an art student, the more I could describe why something looked beautiful (form, color, light, composition, etc.) said paintings looked more beautiful as well.
For anyone wondering what happened to the intro and the birds: it was because this is part of an expo about beauty, a professional one in a real establishment, so they can't have any birds or the intro in the video, hope i cleared things up!
I remember being a naive high schooler watching- drawn to the title from an interest in flintknapping and a love for the channel. It’s weird to think that these videos are what I grew up on- I remember being blown away by the universe egg Philosophy video. So thank you for making me who I am
It’s not easy to talk about something beautiful and then proceed to create a really beautiful thumbnail. Which is also in style with the cannel’s branding. I was in genuine awe looking at it
The last time I was hospitalized (for 14 days) a good friend brought me two posters that I could hang on the walls. The walls were bare and white so it needed colour,- and the posters were lovely and colourful. Ten years after I still have them. They remind me of the the hospital and my good friend. :)
"your happiness depends on how beautiful you think the City you live in is" Me, living in cologne, where 90% of the old and beautiful architecture got destroyed in second world war and was then replaced by shabby, ugly, cheap post war houses: Well that's unfortunate.
Try living in Edmonton. We have no old architecture and a lot of houses look the same or very similar. I suppose we do have a fair bit of nature in the city, though.
@@tylermech66 hahaha yeah that's actually true 😂 if I want to see beautiful architecture there is still something left, or I can go to another city that was less destroyed
@@tylermech66 I mean Boston and Philidelsphia can look quite nice, but you are right the further west you go the worse it looks. Hope you like concrete parking lots and decaying strip malls.
The subjective aspect of beauty is in meaning. If you can relate to something that makes it subjectively beautiful. And then there's more intersubjective stuff like symmetry and such. But both modes are needed for genuine beauty. Falling in love is a combination of both. Listening to music that is well arranged while also relating with the lyrics on a deeply emotional level is also a moment of beauty. That is also a combination of both modes.
I always thought those old hospitals always were depressing, They treat the illness but don't cater for mental health, while people are stuck in there with their sterile boring environment.
Imagine living somewhere in the Eastern Europe or Russia with their standardized old soviet-time blocks of flats. That could be the reason they look so gloomy most times.
Alone [EU] Not sure if this is common but the Polish flats in my hometown are painted with bright colours and patterns. There is a lot of green, trees line the street and there are parks throughout with nice gardens of flowers. People are pretty happy actually. I'd say the resting bitch face so common in eastern Europe is more of a cultural difference, we can be pretty judgemental.
“Beauty isn’t tangible, it only exists in our heads as a feeling” ah. Breaking down the illusions of our confusing physical plane. It’s wild how often I see traces of philosophy in science, and science in philosophy. The harmony between the two brings me an unexplainable joy

I live in a desert region, when it rains the smell and the noise of the rain make me happy, while other people don't like the rain, in my region we almost contemplate it
I heard rain is supposed to sound like your mother's heart beating when you were in the womb. It makes some people feel calm and protected.
i live in a place with close to 250cm of rain - i still die for it because it rains for like 4-5 months of the year and it's so hot otherwise (also it makes everything look nicer aha)
I live in a rainy region of my country, it rains several times, as it is a big city, the sky is very cloudy, there are days when I can barely see the sun
In some parts of Africa, people pray for rain.
@@adity.atiwari yeah it makes everything look soo much better. It's like a natural filter for contrast and saturation.

Wow, I never realized that beauty is a mechanism rewarding you for looking around when there isn't necessarily anything important to look at. If you're inclined to just look around all the time, then you're more likely to discover important things when they are there, and finding the world around you beautiful does the trick

Finally, a light vid from you guys that doesnt give me an existential crisis

In my old school, they even painted on the floors of the school grounds and on pillars.

Same, about 99.99% of all my happiness comes majority from beautiful things
Really? I love the look of (pure, 24k) gold. The beautiful, saturated, shiny yellow color is simply mesmerizing.
if your father showed you that as a child then its understandable but if you're an adult and get happier seeing clouds than gold then you're mentally underdeveloped because recognizing the value of money is one of the biggest parts of maturity
@@deyokes5562 we are talking about beauty not about value, gold is always valuable, but it is not always beautiful
I found your comment very helpful, thank you!
Beauty is somewhere right between chaos and order which is also where you find meaning. Goes right along with Jordan Petersons philosophy.

Indeed. I played this over and over just for the narrator & music :-)
And it really is super clever when you think about it! ;)
Well, the amount of work needed for these videos amazes me every time I see them.
If the person didnt look at your product at all you might consider redesigning it
the beauty of this animation makes me feel delighted

That’s a part of it but I think beauty is beyond scientific explanation, things can be beautiful in a very unexplainable manner, for example one may consider looks (not faces but expressions) to be beautiful, beauty comes from a realm outside our own and we get only an infinitely small glimpse of what true beauty it.
My mom traveled a little before she died and after it was like she finally saw the beauty in the world and started to appreciate it. It just breaks my heart that it was Death that made her finally see it, but if that’s what has to happen to her or any of you understand it is your loss, not ours.
