  • We are back at The Blue Note Grill mixing on the house sound system which consists of a Yamaha MGP24X (16 chnl.) console and JBL FOH speakers. There was a great crowd on hand the entire evening.
    A look at the console setup, sound check, and the "beckwith" performance.

    Nice work man thank you for taking the time. Are the gates on the board our external hardware ?

    • @stageleftaudio
      @stageleftaudio  3 місяці тому +1

      Thank you for your comment. The gates are external. They are connected to the "insert" points on the input channels for the drums.

    So you compressed the kick and snare around 10 o’clock with the one knob comp? It sounds best there?

    • @stageleftaudio
      @stageleftaudio  Рік тому +2

      Yes, it worked out well at that position... with the type of mics being used, along with how hard the drummer was playing, and where the gain was set for those channels. Those one-knob type of controls do a fairly good job, but they may not always function the same when placed in the same position.

    Please explain the sidechain on MGP, does it work well enough, or should you use a compressor/composer?

    • @stageleftaudio
      @stageleftaudio  Рік тому +1

      The "insert" points work well. That board has a compressor available for half the channels; which we rely upon to help control the dynamics. The 4-chnl gate was used in the "insert" points for four of the drum mics. Therefore, the drums had gates and compressors on them.

      @@stageleftaudio Thanks for reply, but I meant like voiceover function. One channel mutes another channel. It should be on MGP but not on MG. Used when speech is to lower the volume of music, among other things.
      It is possible that you are not using that feature.

    • @stageleftaudio
      @stageleftaudio  Рік тому +2

      My apologies! I mis-read your question; I "converted" side-chaining into an "insert". The 4-chnl gate used in the video supports side-chaining, but I don't use it.
      The MGP console does have a ducker (another term for side-chain). I have never used that feature on that console. If the ducker works like it should (and provides tune-able parameters), it would be THE choice to use for something like "ducking" the bass channel when the kick-drum is hit.

    Love your setups very much.. Follow always... But would like to ask why insert the kick drum mic

    • @stageleftaudio
      @stageleftaudio  Рік тому +1

      Thank you for your comments. For the kick drum, are you asking about the insert of the gate? If so, the gate controls the residual noise level of the kick. It helps "tighten" the kick and greatly reduces any potential feedback from that microphone.

      What I wanted to ask was why insert the kick drum mic Inside the drum instead of on a stand outside,?
      Kindly assist me sir

    • @stageleftaudio
      @stageleftaudio  Рік тому +1

      Ah ok. Placing the mic inside the kick drum brings out the resonance of the kick drum, which makes EQ'ing (if needed) of the drum easier to manage, but also allows for the drum beater to be picked up (which is the "slap" that is occasionally heard). Also, it keeps the stage clear of short mic-stands that the performers could trip over. Placing a kick drum mic on a stand at the "sound hole" works, but it usually requires some EQ correction (on the kick drum channel) to manage the low-frequency issues caused by air pressure (from the kick drum) flowing around the kick drum mic. As well, sometimes, the "slap" cannot be heard when the mic is sitting at the sound hole. Sometimes we mic at the beater side... this is the best spot, but requires some work getting the mic and mic-stand positioned; also, many drummers do not like having a mic sitting close to their feet. To keep it simple, we usually place the mic inside the kick-drum.

    And would also like to ask, how do you control feedbacks on such small spaces

    • @stageleftaudio
      @stageleftaudio  Рік тому +1

      Feeback control starts with ensuring the microphones are positioned in a manner that they won't pick up direct sounds from the monitor speakers. Next, setting proper mic gain, then applying (if needed) subtractive EQ to the microphone inputs.

    Can i see how you connect the gate?

    • @stageleftaudio
      @stageleftaudio  3 місяці тому +1

      Each channel of the gate connects to a separate input on the console. The console has an input on it called "INSERT". This is where the gate is connected. The gate is connected using a special cable called an "insert cable".
      In one of the previous videos I did at the Blue Note Grill, I cover how the gate is connected... unfortunately, I do not recall which video that is.

    • @stageleftaudio
      @stageleftaudio  Рік тому +1

      The CX line of amplifiers are good, but they are not designed for live sound. Those amps are 70V systems used for things like paging systems in offices, or background music for shopping malls, or retail stores, etc... They are designed to be used with voltage-tap speakers. If you look at the back of the amps, they should show "70V" on them. Unfortunately, they are not designed for passive speakers.

    Do you not group backing vocals?

    • @stageleftaudio
      @stageleftaudio  Рік тому +2

      Not with only two additional singers. I usually group when there's at least four additional singers and none of those singers have any solo parts.
