      The car is probably overclocked, the brakes aren't up to speed with high latency, and without ABS he has to PWM the pedals like crazy.

    Not covered: Some radar guns can detect the tiny change in the radar signal caused by there being a tuned circuit on the receive end (your detector) -- so they can detect your detector -- helpful if detectors are illegal in your area so they can catch you for it...
    Then the detectors got a level smarter and detect radar then immediately detune their antennas so that they don't show up as damping the source. Radar detector detector circumvention.

      That is only effective if the lazy-ass traffic cop wants to take the time to adjust his speed gun. Most cops are just sitting there hiding behind parked cars eating their donuts trying to just make it to retirement. Do you really think a typical traffic cop will take the time to wok that hard?

      That sounds like complete and total BS. There's no way in hell a radar gun could "detect a tuned circuit" and there's double no way the radar detector could "detune" itself like that.

      @@VTX-Live It's real and people have been fined for it. I knew someone that got pulled over for it and while slowing down he took the detector and put it in a box and slid it to the back of his van and they still knew he had one and had been using it.

    I didn't know these were still a thing. They were all the rage when I was a kid, but haven't seen/heard of them since.

      Yeah that happened in my municipality too...until someone took them to court because they ended up with a screw in their tire, ended up with a blowout and messed up their rim which caused an accident and killed a 5 year old. Supposedly confiscating and destroying the unit would have sufficed...Some say it was worth a kid's life.

      Weta Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Quebec Police (Sûreté du Québec), and RCMP across eastern Canada use Spectre radar-detector-detectors (RDD). Spectre RDD will notify the officer if a radar detector has been detected near-by. Penalty includes a minimum fine of $350 in Manitoba, $170 in Ontario, and $650 in Quebec, and the radar detector will be confiscated.

    Hey Linus, police officer here. My department actually doesn't train us in stationary radar any more, just Lidar. The two main reasons being that it's not easily picked up by detection equipment and it's significantly more precise (radar beam width is very wide, a bit over 30 ft wide at 100 ft. Lidar beam width is much narrowed, specifically 3ft at 1000ft, so around 100 times narrower). Radar is still used but more when it's integrated into the car in what's called moving radar, the radar is in a fixed spot in the vehicle and connected to the calibrated speedometer, which is then used to add/subtract the speed of the police car from the reading depending on whether the vehicle you're detecting is moving towards or away from you.
    Also there are Lidar jammers out there as well, however if I'm not getting a good hit off the license plate I can always move the reticle left/right to one of the head/tail lights.

    • @CGR89
      @CGR89 9 років тому

      Also speed detection doesn't work from the side of the vehicle, only the front or back. The radar wouldn't detect a change in frequency, nor would the Lidar detect a change in range. The cosine effect states that the greater angle you are to one side of the vehicle you're detecting the lower the speed reading will be. While it means the speed detection will always be slightly lower than the motorist's actual speed (unless you're directly in front of the vehicle), however this always favors the motorist.

    Here in Western Australia they use camouflaged laser cameras, usually rear facing. They'll send you a $100 fine in the mail (usually takes 2 or 3 weeks) for doing 5kph (3.10mph) over the speed limit, usually on highways/country roads.
    And they do it all in the guise of road safety.

    I have had this discussion with numerous people and found two basic groups.
    Those who understand radar detectors are passively receiving listening devices. And those who believe the radar detector is actively emitting "some kind of beam" that detects the presence of radar.
    Funny how the latter always say things like "yeah i don't think so" or "thats why you have to send them in all the time to be caliberated" or " well how else could it work".
    My detector's (Max2 HD) ability to log and store frequencies for realtime or later filtering so very helpful.

    "Doppler" is not a specific band of frequencies; it is only relevant as the term for an observer experiencing frequency change/ shift, as a frequency source passes by.
    This, in simple terms, occurs because the wave "compresses/decompresses" as the source travels past the observer.

    that slow down thing worked for me*. cruise control is the best thing in the world for that. also music. if i don't listen to music i tend to feel the haste bug's bite a bit more strongly because i focus harder on getting to where i want to be, and that is usually better done faster. won't lie, i recently did a strech of 300km in less than two hours. who could blame me, i literally took the road just to give my sister a freaking 400km ride, and then had all the way back to do. i took some good, wide back roads and floored it. the trip back was over an hour shorter thanks to that. funny thing i was doing 180 kph like the whole way, and a whole group of some 6 cars more or less kept with me for the most part of it. they were like they only other cars on the road, and they were all doing at least 180 too. i'd leave them behind but every time i slowed down by a bit for 5 minutes they all caught up. wtf!

    Here in Australia the police will park a van car or 4x4 with a camera that takes photos of the license plates and if you are speeding you will get a ticket with a photo of the vehicle the driver is driving. If your car or vehicle by someone else you have to let them know who was driving the vehicle. I was on a public transit bus going through a speed camera and I saw a flash and the driver got done for speeding going downhill at 80 km/h in a 60 km/h speed zone. Speed cameras do get the vehicles coming the other way with a double lane road with an island in the middle on the road. The flash is on it's front or rear bumper and that depends which way the vehicle is parked and the vehicle can be an unmarked police vehicle.

    Sorry to tell you that a radar detector does not pickup ''doppler frequencies'' but the original signal from the police radar , be it X/K/Ka bands.
    You are right if you say : the returned signal from a moving object contains a doppler
    shift which is analysed by the police radar and transformed in a speed readout.
    A K-band radar would display 50 mph when the Doppler shift is 3600 Hz.
    Good work all in all : being caught is expen$ive.

    So i'm glad you made this. i'v been wondering for a long time.
    Can radars pick up your speed accurately if they are driving towered you?

    • @frollard
      @frollard 9 років тому +1

      +chris raines Well, yes. They detect the speed difference between the source and the target. Then they just hook up to the in-car speedometer to subtract any police vehicle speed from the result.
      say they're doing 100km/h toward you, and they detect a gross speed difference of -250km/h (a closing speed is negative). The gun adds the +100 that the gun is moving toward the target and gets the -150km/h absolute net speed of the target. busted.

    Here in NJ police have LIDAR. However, in order to shoot at license plate, officer has to be standing still, perpendicular to traffic, and within 1/4 mile of intended target. most drivers should be able to see that well in advance.

    I always thought it was the changes in light frequency, hence doppler effect or red shift. when an object is moving towards you the light shifts toward the red end of the spectrum, and that was how they calculated the speed galaxies where moving. learn something new everyday as they say.

    The worst problem regarding laser detector, is that by the time you've been targeted, they have your speed. so even if you could react it would be too late. That said though, the held models are difficult to keep steady so they continue to paint you with the laser until an accurate measurement can be made.

    What about LIDAR detectors, though? I got a ticket for 90 in a 65 almost a year ago in La Mesa, CA, and the CHP used laser. I think he gave me a break though - I may have actually been going 100+. A friend got one for 105 and his ticket was ~$2k whereas mine was a bit over $400 or so. Also in my case, 25 over, was the max I could do traffic school and get the point taken off my record.

    In the city, I dont really understand why people want to speed stoplight to stoplight. Often they are timed, so if you drive at the speed limit then you dont have to brake every time. See it so often where I am going the speed limit and cruising through the city with ease while some idiot in a BMW goes 20mph over the limit and has to break at every light where I barely have to adjust the gas.

    • @MrNateSPF
      @MrNateSPF 9 років тому

      +Azivegu Gosh, my city had perfectly timed lights for a long time. Then the county government pulled rank taking over control of the lights and effed everything up :-(
      But your comment reminded me of a time long ago when I was trying to help a guy explain this to his wife. Even expanding that she is spending more on gas & maintenance as well as increasing the chances of not making it to the destination just for the slim chance of saving a few seconds on short trips.
