The process can be very long and often you do not know if you're still being considered or not.

The process can take 4 months to a year of hiring process depending on the agency.
first you fill out an application do not apply to departments adding to their pool of candidates apply to actual departments hiring.
make sure all your information is correct.
start working on your fitness now that will be one of the major separating factors that guarantee you a position
The process

application - basic information nothing to crazy
fitness/written test - both hold equal weight and are usually a pass fail, however top scores are usually guaranteed a spot if the pass all the other hiring processes.
panel interview - 3 to 5 different ranked officer asking scenario based questions be honest but be smart obviously do not say anything illegal or incriminating if you make a traffic stop a would not give a ticket than just say that unless it was serious crime.
background investigation - is the longest part, be honest on your forms if you got a speeding ticket 10 years ago put it down, if they find out and you lied it will disqualify you. They usually go back seven years for contacts and references to include housing, neighbors, and so on. Illegal drug use is big unless its marijuana, if you have not used in a few years you are usually good everything is a disqualified.
Polygraph - not all agencies have this but most do, this is why its important not to lie even being to feverous when doing this will get you screen a deceptive, which is a fail. If you want to know more about passing a polygraph then leave me a comment below.
Psychological exam - very long plan on about three to four hours and it is between 200-400 receptive questions to make sure you answer consistently if there are any question the psychologist will ask you to explain your answers, just use common sense. Ex. - (Why do you own guns) I competitively shoot or I am a hunter.

This was such a helpful video! I just graduated with my Bachelors in English and Political Science, with a Minor in Legal Studies. I did super well in school, and planned on going to law school. Instead of going straight into law school, I decided I instead wanted to save up some money and gain some actual real-world experience. I work at a District Attorney's Office as a legal assistant now. Since I have been gaining more experience with criminal law --working with troopers, deputies, and city police every single day as I handle discovery-- I am starting to believe that going into law enforcement might genuinely be another career path for me to seriously look into. Despite my dad being a retired member of law enforcement, I truly never gave the career any thought. However, I feel as though my analytical skills that I obtained with my English degree paired alongside my gov knowledge through my Poli Sci degree would pair really well together in a law enforcement context. I unfortunately just missed the deadline to take the NY state trooper exam, but have signed up and been approved to take the Conservation Officer and Park Police exams: given that I also extensively studied environmental policy, and they are being offered in Sep.
I've been working out in the morning, as I have familiarized myself with the physical requirements that most departments test for and done extensive research on the rest of the steps of the hiring process (mostly due to your other really helpful videos!)
I would love to end up with a State or Federal career, and I am just looking for some advice. I feel kinda silly for not thinking about law enforcement as a viable career until I literally started working in a District Attorney's Office, but here we are.
For context, I am 22; just graduated college in May; and, I am a woman. NYS has started the 30 by 30 initiative --striving to have 30% of law enforcement be women by 2030, so I hope this also helps my chances at getting a call for conservation officer/park police.
If I do not get called, what should I do? Is there anything else I should be doing right now in order to prep for a State or Federal career? Thanks so much for even reading this much!

I wanted to take the time and collect my thoughts for your response. You have gone above and beyond most individuals who would like to get into law enforcement. There is a lot to cover here so I will try to do my best and hit each point. Let’s start with your degree, less than 50% of police candidates have an associate degree let alone a bachelors. Your political science degree will be considered a relatable education so thats another positive.
You prior experience in a DA office will make you stand out significantly in law enforcement and even seem as step back to some police departments (this is not a bad thing). Additionally, fitness is a factor but it seems you already are squared away there as most do not even work out when they know they are applying to police departments.
Now finally your age and the fact that you are a female will put you as a must hire if you complete and pass all the hiring phases. What I am trying to tell you is you would be a highly sought after candidate.
Someone with your ambition and drive may find normal uniform patrol a little tedious however you could quickly promote and apply to special units.
Now to talk about federal verse state, I can go on and on over this topic, however lets hit the high points state is always good yet limiting if you ever want to move. Federal carries the best benefits in my opinion, and you can carry your salary and years with you if you ever transfer agencies. As for conservation vs state let me give a little of my background, I started law enforcement in conservation with the National Park Service (best job ever). I transferred to another federal agency in DC where my career exploded in a good way. Instructorships, OIC of a Special Weapons Unit, Lead Protection for Presidentially appointed Agency Directors, Counter Surveillance etc. Either one you will love just make sure it is a job you feel passionate about.
I currently am going through law school because I wanted to continue and grow. This would not have been possible without the law enforcement experience I gathered.

I have been looking at Northern Arizona University's Park Ranger certification program, and am also very interested in working for the National Park Service! I am only concerned about the job's seeming reliance on seasonal workers, and the fewer amount of full-time positions available (again, this is only from what I can tell through googling.) It seems like an awesome way to get my foot into the door, in terms of going Federal.
After reading your response over and over, I cannot stop thinking about how going Federal would truly be amazing. I am currently also looking to apply for US Park Police. Federal seems to just have much better benefits and upward mobility, as you note. I have been looking on the USA Jobs website almost everyday to scope new opportunities out. So, my plan for now is to finish applying for US Park Police, and continue to look for Park Ranger information.
I hope that law school is going very well! Your comment has given me so much hope for my future and I'm really grateful for it!

Going through the process right now for a big agency here in NY. Background investigation is on going, only thing I’m worried about is my prior job before is being written up for lateness, and 2 parking tickets. But I was honest and wrote those things done, wasn’t trying to hide anything. Take my written psych coming up on the 6th, wish me luck man thanks for the great video!

I got hired on the spot. Walked in the department and they said congrats your hired. Did paperwork and then took a drug screen same day. Next day did physical test and stated the academy the following month
Congratulations on your appointment. For those that read the comments this is called a conditional hire. They extend the offer based on the conditions you pass all the requirements such as a physical and background check. The fact that they offered early is great. This is why now is a good time to become a police officer. congrats again and as always stay safe.

Congrats on going through the process. No need to be worried you are sitting much higher than many other candidates. Speeding tickets don't amount too much.

I can 100% confirm to just be honest during the oral and BI. NOBODY IS PERFECT and they know that. I was so worried because I had terrible credit from the military and when I got out, I didn’t get hired for a while and my child support went into arrears. I didn’t think I would get hired. However honesty went a long way saying listen I was irresponsible in the military that was 10 plus years ago and as far as child support, there is a difference between choosing not to pay it and not being able to. I made a point to show how I’ve since paid off a lot of debt and have been paying my CS for years on time and even extra towards the arrears. Who I was then doesn’t reflect who I am today and I didn’t have an issue. 🤷🏻♂️

Thats reassuring that they worked with you. I had my share of neg incidents as well in the military almost 13y ago now, have been told no in a couple BI so I was contemplating not trying anymore. I’ll stick with it.

Well dressed folks waiting to go in, nervous as heck. Everyone
comming out would be bombed with questions, on what was asked. Inevitably, that person would warn of a "trick question", and "the answer". What I learned from this, was to be honest,
never guess, and just be myself. Truthfully. That is how how I excelled. The fear and nerves were gone. Explaining past behaviors ,with honest "grew up late" answers. The truth.
But you would never believe what the biggest obstacle was, for me....After being top of every list, even before graduating my police acadamy. I was called "very rare individual" for scoring so high,out the gate. yet, I never got my own badge. Too sick to talk about what happened..

26:05 so what if I really do own more than 4 firearms but it's because I'm big on 2A, enjoy building them, and have 1 to (legally and licensed) carry, a couple for hunting, a couple for home defense, and a couple just to shoot at the range? Is there a good way to articulate that where I don't get flagged as a gun nut?
This is where I would go with something along the lines of, I grew up with the firearms or with firearms training, in multiple disciplines such as conservation, safety, and sport. as I grew and realized I was going into law enforcement I figured it is good to have a better knowledge of firearms so I can handle them safely if I come across them in the performance of my duties. That's why I continued to grow my knowledge.

I’m 29 and seriously considering applying to become an officer, but I have questions about drug use. I smoked weed from 2010 up until 5/14/22. I quit because I wanted to turn my life around after learning my wife had an affair. I’m planning on waiting to apply after I’ve been clean for a full year, but I’m concerned about other drug use from my past as well, and wondering if it will disqualify me.
In high school and college, I experimented with MDMA, mushrooms, and LSD. I stopped doing those drugs for many years, until 2019 when i did LSD once with my wife while on vacation. I haven’t done anything but weed since then.
Obviously I will need to be honest about this history with drugs, but how detailed should I be? Do you think should even bother trying to become an officer in spite of my drug history?

You should definitely pursue the career if you feel you can make a positive impact. I know a quite few officers that had some previous drug use and turn their lives around, They are great officers and even supervisors now.
You may just need to wait a little longer to apply three years is the usually for anything other than marijuana. You are still young and have plenty of time.

Hi, loved the video. How much harder is it to apply to a department in a different state than the on you currently reside in? Would you have to go in multiple times or is alot of it done virtually?
Before COVID you usually had to travel. The big rule of thumb now is travel for the physical and written test. And travel for the interview. The rest is usually all phone or Internet.

Definitely not to late, some agencies have a 37 year cut off but they are rare. Being able to write and speak Spanish give you a huge advantage over those who do not. Best of luck let us know if you have any other questions.

Border patrol changed their age limit to 40. a lot of federal agencies the age cut off is 37, however there’s some law enforcement agencies not covered under traditional law enforcement retirement that don’t have an age limit, for example the VA police or military civilian police. The federal reserve bank police also don’t have an age cut off I believe.
@@dsatalino1020 agencies are always changing this however. There are expecting for every rule such as military service or prior law enforcement service etc. Always keep researching to stay on top of everything.
@@armogantraining7164 correct some agencies will consider your military or LEO experience, but customs and border patrol specifically on their job opening announcement accept people before their 40th birthday. The main reason for the 37 age cut off is because of mandatory retirement at 57, however I think because customs and border patrol are so short staffed they were able to get their age limit raised. Also there are some federal LE agencies that don’t fall into the traditional FERS system and therefore don’t have a maximum age of entry, such as VA police and DoD Police. Also federal reserve bank police aren’t technically employed by the government and have a different pension system with no maximum entry.

It's not the art that will be the hurdle it will be the persona of your character that they may have an issue with.
I hope my question and comments find you. Just doing a lot of research right now for my interest in changing careers and becoming a police officer. I am a physician in semi retirement. I am 57, a young 57. What are your thoughts about my age and pursuing a career in law enforcement? I don't believe the physical requirements will be a problem. I'm in good shape, not overweight. I also have a 4th degree black belt in Taekwondo, so I have done a lot of physical fitness over the years. Secondly, you mentioned not applying to departments with a large pool of applicants. How do I find good departments to apply to, so that I may have a decent chance? I live in a suburb 10 miles away from our state capital and there are a lot of smaller suburban police departments in addition to the major city department. Would like to know your thoughts. Your age these days may be less of a factor, I know many departments ask officer to come out of retirement, and even waiving age restrictions so you are ok there if you feel you can maintain the requirements. AS for departments I would say right now not many departments have hiring pools so identify the ones that you feel fit you. I call this a department audit and have all my coaching members go through it.

A lot of departments have it posted in their hiring announcement. Others tell you after your first event which usually is the fitness test. You can always apply but my professional opinion is avoid department like these unless you know they are filling billets.

Nelson denny is a common police hiring exam used by some departments it is a pretty standard exam as for more specifics on the department. I would need to look into them more.

One of my biggest concerns is my eyesight. I can’t see without my glasses, and I had an officer tell me a few years back that if I could correctly it to 20-20 that I should be good. Not only do I have blurred vision, but also a lazy eye. So I basically look like a confused cartoon when my eye goes lazy. I can still see very well with my glasses on, and the lazy eye isn’t always that lazy, but could still cost me. Could this potentially disqualify me??
It could but most of the time if its correct you would just get a medical waiver. What it comes down to, is does it effect your ability to perform the duties of law enforcement.

My hair length is a bit longer than normal and I have highlighted hair but it’s very neatly groomed is that okay during hiring process until I start the academy ?
So this is a really depends question. By most policies as long as hair is neat and well groomed it meets policy. I have found females can get away with colored hair much more than males, however the depends portion is the hiring officials. A lot of department higher ups still are from a time where females wore their hair in a bun and males must be clean cut and shaven. Times are changing but not completely. I know this is not the perfect answer but it really depends on the individuals you work with through the hiring process. I hope this helps a little.

I got fired from a job 12 1/2 years ago because of stealing. It was a paint company. I got asked to take some paint out for a customer by a manager. I admitted to it since I was told if I admitted to it there would not be a record. Will this disqualified me? I've been at my current job since 2010.
If I am understanding you correctly a manager asked you to give paint to a customer and you did so. After wards you were asked and admitted to giving the customer paint. Which then led to your termination. No this won't effect your chances you will need to explain if they go back this far in your history, I would use the verbiage I just provided you when filling out your questionnaire. In regards to gathering contact information for the background check, I lived in a rough neighborhood during my bachelors degree (needed somewhere cheap and close to the college), however I spoke to only one person my entire two years living there (didn’t even know who lived in my building). Will I need to collect information on them, even though I have finished my degree and moved back to my hometown? Or would information from my apartment complex itself be sufficient?
I would just get references from students or friends that new you lived there and put them down. Make sure you tell them they are going to be a housing reference.
I've been considering for a long time to join the police force. I was enlisted in the USMC for 2 years before being pushed out with a General discharge (under honorable conditions). Do you think this will impact my chances at all? Is it worth pursuing the career. The discharge was longer than 6 years ago I'm 28 now
Couple things jump to mind, first that discharge will not have any negative affect on your application or hiring process. Second utilize your veteran status and military experience to get you further along the list. Lastly if you would like and haven't had any issues after getting discharged you can apply to have that general turn into an honorable. Best of luck let us know if you need any help in your process.

So you can do a few things. I went through my first police academy while on terminal leave from the military. I had a lot of leave saved from deployments. If your good at planning this is another option. Additionally some place allow you to go through the academy on your own and the GI bill pays for it. Another option to apply and take leave on the days you need to complete application process. If you are out in February. It will take you that long to go through some application process. Last you can be up front with the department you're applying to and tell them you still have a couple months obligation to the Marines. They will be fine with that. Good luck your doing it right starting now.

So this depends on if they ask you. Some departments only ask if you have used marijuana in the last 3 years. Don't lie tho, it will catch you on your poly.

Amazing video! I have a question. I used to use Marijuana and did other more serious drugs when I was a teenager up until I was 20 years old. I continued to use marijuana off and on throughout my 20's, but ive since quit for nearly 2 years. I'm 27 now and haven't smoked since then and don't plan on it ever again. Do you think this would disqualify me from becoming a police officer? Obviously I would be very upfront and honest about these things with the interviewers if they asked, but it makes me afraid to pursue this as a career. I'm afraid that admitting to ever using more serious drugs is grounds for instant disqualification, or is that not the case?
While certain criteria can disqualify you on the spot, that is not necessarily the case with marijuana or illegal substance use. Now I would need to know more about the illegal substance use to give a full professional opinion, but please DO NOT post it on here. Big thing when it comes too illegal substances is time away from them that is usually the key factor. You have already taken the right steps on that. If it’s a passion and goal of yours to work in law enforcement than don’t let anyone hold you back. Not me and especially not yourself!
I have a question kind of specific to me. Im only 2 years clean of marijuana. The department i looked at online says minimum of 3 years. Should I still apply or just wait out the year before applying?

Not protecting social media, but definitely updating the way you present yourself to the public. Also the other factor is not sharing your access codes. Let them see your entire social media if you have prepared for it, it won't matter.
I had my car repossessed a couple years ago due to financial/ life troubles, but have since then, been good about making payments on time. Would this be a problem on my background check?

@@artyomlevitskiy6806by articulate, he means that you have to be really honest. Tell them what happened and use good words to explain why you were in that situation. A lot of time, honesty will get you in because they don’t want cops who lie.
Example, let’s say that you got a ticket 2 weeks ago and they asked you. You would say “yes, I did.” Don’t give too much info but just answer their questions. You only give more info if they ask you.
You would be surprised that they will take you after things that you’ve done.
But there are things that you would do that would disqualify you. If you feel like they’re really bad, still tell the truth. A bad cop is someone who lies. Once you get caught, your whole career is done. So be careful.
Do you think it will hurt me that some friends and I took a man's debit card from his car when I was 15 and took some money out, but our parents caught us and we returned the money and he didn't press charges. Then some friends and I snuck through a window and took some items from a building, they weren't worth a lot of money. Nothing on my record as we didn't get caught. Yes it will be a negative mark but your articulation will play a bigger factor and it will be up to the department to review it. It does not sound like an immediate disqualification.

I am an RN but I want to become a police officer for several reasons. I was wondering, do you think the process would be easier for me, as I made it through nursing school and I met the licensing requirements for my state for an RN license?
This will definitely help with the mental toughness side of the process. As for the background review it will not really have much of an impact, other that you have details you will need to place on your background packet.

I'm currently close the end of my background investigation process with one department and just got invited to start the background investigation process with another department that I'm even more interested in. How do I proceed without messing up?
As I mentioned in the other comment, you want to stay in the process at both and then see which makes you the offer, if you get both than you just choose the one you want more.

Not in the typical sense. You do need to go thorough a police academy often held on local college campus. It's is full of physical training and law enforcement studies plus graded practical scenarios. Hope this helps.

It is sometime called other things but it allows you too work along side and learn from real police officers on the force. That's not an issue they run national checks. If your talking about your background interview you need to complete. they may allow you to go zoom ever since covid, but they may ask you to come in person. This depends on if you submitted electronically or physical forms. Physical if it been pass a couple years and they are not a hiring pool it's gone by now. If it electronic it remains on the server. Unless the upgrade and archive it.
Is the written exam and the civil exam the same ?
Yes different states and departments have oversight governing what criteria the must meet for the police hiring process. Some require a state civil service exam. Ashely, this really depends on if you are only applying to positions through NTN or if the department requires you to apply through that database. I always encourage my coaching members to stay way from hiring pool agencies or pool applications for multiple reasons. In order to give you the best answer, do you need to apply through NTN.

I have no background in law enforcement, I’m 21, go to college full time and work full time. Will they still allow me to take the physical exam and the other steps before they make a decision or will they make a decision just based on my information like work history and education etc or does everyone get a chance to do all the exams and physical tests before they decide if they want you or not.

I went back to school in 2020 and also started working out at the same time. I since then have lost 70-pounds and I am about to finish my 3rd associates degree. I also started working with mentally ill kids once a week to help better my resume, but I am still struggling to get moved on into a background process. I was a troubled teen and was expelled from my high school my sophomore year. I quickly got my act together and was reinstated back into my school district 5 months later. I did good my last two years of high school and graduated in 2014 and never got into trouble again. I have applied to about 12 agencies in the last 3 years and have been non-selected 10 times and DQ'd twice. I am not sure what is holding me back and I feel like I am doing everything right.

That's the typical some departments go back further but not usually. This applies to most things, however felonies and violent incidents will always be pulled and reviewed.

Most marijuana use is given little though as long as it has been three years or more. Since your 20 and you need to be 21 to be a police officer. The timeline should work out perfect for you.

@@Noneforsale yes, that's pretty similar it depends on your departments fto program some are 6 months others are 1 month I have seen the trainee work with multiple fto's and others just the same one the entire time. When I would fto a new officer it would be based on the San Jose model. This is a pretty standardize fto program. Some times I would switch to 8 hour shifts Monday thru Friday. Others I would have the training on my shift for panama schedule 12hr shifts.

It's called Panama Schedule. On Mon. Tues. Off Wed. Thurs. on Fri. Sat. Sun. Then off Mon. Tues. On wed. Thurs. Off Fri. Sat. Sun. and it keeps going back and forth. 12hr days and one is an 8hr day

I went through the agility test, they took pictures of my tattoos and I was getting my paperwork Notarized when I was asked a lot of questions about it. Are they strict on credit checks?
Not too much, you need to be able to have a public trust clearance. So really as long as you do't have and major delinquent accounts where civil action is being taken then you should be fine. But they will run a credit check. Right now how they need officers much weight won't be put on that however.

Marijuana is not that serious of a drug nor does it really affect background much. However If you’re under 25 ish years old and you did this it shouldn’t be any issue. They will not hold it against you as seeing it as a maturity problem. If you’re 30 or older this will affect you more than likely. I work for a DAs office but assist in background checks and we just refused a guy who’s 37 who just graduated the Academy who quit smoking weed just before the Academy. His 80 page background packet was pitched in the trash immediately and we never even opened it. How old you are and when you did it last is what’s significant. Regardless don’t let that stop you from trying.

A year?? that's a short time. The whole process of becoming an Australian Police Officer may take around 5 to 6 years, including four years of education, 3 to 4 months to process your application, and then 3 to 4 months for the hiring process (depending on the police department). After that, if you get selected, you will spend about six months in the Police Academy, and then serve 6 months to one year of probation period. That's why most people start their training at around 18 years of age.
If you count college in the process. It's the exact same here. We do not count higher education as part of the process for training purposes. Great info, thanks for the post.

Traffic enforcement is not even 12% of all policing contacts. It’s the actual minimum of what police actually do. Our agency makes 147 calls for service per traffic stop and that is about an average for the state of Texas.
