Wow this brought back some good memories of my dad when we went to the Norfolk Broads potterheim when we was younger. In fact loads of your videos are places dad would take us. We lost him just over 3 year's ago now and watching your videos kind of takes me back to our time with dad and the great memories we had 🙏

You went to coltishall not horning, it’s the complete opposite direction. The pub you saw was the rising sun in coltishall.

I love steering the day boat ,its so easy, dont go to close to the edge, as grasses and reeds can get stuck in the filter underneath, we used to find the pubs for a ,pub lunch,

Oooops. As soon as you went under Wroxham Bridge, I knew that you were going the wrong way to get to Horning. The pub you found was in Coltishall. Horning is closer to Wroxham than Coltishall, so you may have had time for a drink. Nice trip though, and great video.

The reason boats travel on rivers on the right is a holdover from the standard maritime rules for vessels, where priority is always given to the vessel on the starboard (right) side, and that if two vessels meet each other head on, both should steer to starboard to avoid a collision, having a default direction to steer to avoid helps to prevent confusion and accidents as both boats try to wildly evade the other. So it's just mostly agreed upon convention so everyone internationally can predict what another vessel may do.

@@TylerTobin8675309 You won't go to jail for sailing your boat down the left, unless you're a big commercial vessel that causes harm and disruption, most you'll get is a talking to from authorities and maybe a fine if you continue to cause nuisance.
I've occasionally had to sail on the left when obstructions on the right and tacking force me to sail, but that's ok cause sailboats have priority.

  • @G1NZOU
    @G1NZOU 2 роки тому +6

I love the peaceful moments when you moor up somewhere out of the way and turn your engine off, just fantastic.
We've gone sailing a few times on engineless yachts, and they're even nicer, all you hear is a bit of rope creaking, and the breeze through the reeds.

The Norfolk and Suffolk Broads is Britain's largest protected wetland and third largest inland waterway, with the status of a national park. It's also home to some of the rarest plants and animals in the UK. The Broads Authority was set up in 1989, with responsibility for conservation, planning, recreation and waterways.

Absolutely fabulous Tim. You brought back some lovely memories for me. We hired a boat about 20 years ago and our son, who was about 12 or 13 at the time drove it while we sat admiring the view at the back. Now he has his own children so hopefully one day we may be able to take them too. I’ve never forgotten the peacefulness when we stopped for lunch and switched off the engine and all we could hear were the sounds of nature - just perfect! Really enjoyed watching, thanks Tim😊😊

Nice video Tim once again. Just to answer your question as to why boats use the right side or "port" side of the river, and from what I learnt when I owned my boat, in the early days of boating, before ships had rudders, boats were controlled using a steering oar and as most sailors were right handed, the steering oar was placed over or through the right side of the stern. Sailors began calling the right side the steering side, which soon became "starboard" an old English term meaning: stéor ("steer") and bord: ("the side of a boat"). It then became common practice for boaters or mariners to pass left to left or "port to port" when navigating on both rivers and at sea. Hope that explains things a little.😎😉👍

I have been taking holidays on The Broads since I was a child (50 Years) not each year but every time I visit Norfolk for a holiday mot on a boat I always hire a picnic boat which has a toilet and a cooker. Last time was 2015 and. It was just over £100 for eight hours but split that by how beer many of you there are(I would recommend no more than 4) but it works out as nice day well spent well worth it. Unfortunately the wildfire seems to have dwindled to hardly anything except a few herons. You. May see a marsh harrier or two above the reeds and marshlands. But where have. all the coots, moorhens greys swans geese and ducks gone? It is very peaceful but too peaceful. There water is probably very polluted with all the boats but don’t be put off you will enjoy your day when weather is good. If it ever stops raining.

    Nice to see the Broads.
Went on holiday in the 70's cruised from the hire boat centre in Wroxham down to Great Yarmouth and back again. Had a few underage drinks in the pub at Stracey Arms which is now a Hindu Temple. Good times.

What has happened to all the wildlife? There are quite a few herons but not a lot else. I last went in September 2020 and saw hardly anything besides the herons. No ducks at all, a few swans at Stracy Arms. I can’t believe how much it has changed since I used to go in the 70s 80s and 90s. Did you find the same?

@@WalkWithMeTim Yeah I think it's kind of this weird limbo where it has very similar protections to a National Park, but isn't at the same time, with a separate act of parliament designating it as a protected area.
      So it's sort of a Quasi-National Park.

Pity you couldn't stop. The rising sun is a nice place to get a drink. Not often people go that way on the broads on a day boat.
