    For intersex people -- those born with sex characteristics outside the traditional definitions of female and male -- the stakes to appear "normal" are high. Drawing on her personal experience, Susannah Temko reveals the shame, prejudice and harm faced by the intersex community, as they're forced to conform to a binary understanding of sex that ultimately hinders their health and well-being. She calls on us all to discard outdated notions of biological sex and accept the complexity within humanity.

    I am an older intersex woman, and because I was surgically "normalized" (made male) after birth. Chromosome testing was not known in those days, and when puberty came around, I developed into a female. It took many years until I could hab the initial surgery reversed, and could begin to live my life as the female I am.
    I am so happy for you young folks that you have a chance to live your life the way it was meant to be lived.

      The only reason it would take “courage” to do this is because of all of the stigma we as intersex people have been slapped with from the medical professionals and others. There’s nothing really to be courageous about when you’re literally talking about who and what you are and proving that it’s very very normal and that we aren’t the problem we’re literally just like everybody else. She is amazing though

      And conversely intersex people don't know how to be male or female because we have no experience of being either, yet we are compelled to impersonate what we are not for the continued comfort of the majority, who might if they learn about our existence come to question religious teachings.

    What a beautiful, articulate, intelligent woman. How could anybody “dislike” this video.
    All this person is doing is asking to be respected and accepted as she is.

    Thank you for this insight. I knew very little about intersexuality, and what I thought I knew, did stem from the idea that a person should be either a male (and look like one) or a female (and look like one). I kind of feel like a ‘broken specimen’ because I have not been able to carry a child. Doctors could not explain why and kind of ‘left it at that’. Knowing what that has done to me, my self image, self esteem, my relationship and later on recognizing how this has influenced me in my well being and my life choices; I cannot begin to understand what life has been like for you, Susannah, and all other people like and unlike you, dealing with intersexuality in any way. To think of how frequently and severely you would to explain that you are you and that you are not faulty, sick, disabled or defective because of that. I am sorry you had to go through all that. I am gratefull you did this ted talk, as it was helpfull to me. I hope to be able to be helpfull and respectfull to someone dealing with this if and when they decide to speak about their experiences with me.

      You're right intersex isn't transgender, but it can through appearance look like transgender. Further to, many of our community are forced to approach transition services to attempt to correct what we can of what surgeons did to use before we could consent to what was done to us. Then there is the other bunch the presenter up there alludes to - those that don't know they're intersex, but may be drawn to transition to answer a discomfort within, where to give an example of my own intersex variation of which I know most, doctors have determined people of my intersex variation ( the most common) are fifty times more likely to transition than XY/XX Binary. So those that would with ignorance abuse the transgender based upon what they believe are perverse choices, could in fact be abusing intersex people who were ' born that way ' for our only sin to be trying to find some modicum of comfort to support continued personal existence in a world designed to exclude us.

      @Pavor The status of the one isn't relevant to the many? Or, rather, you don't think the methods by which a doctor approaches and treats a patient as well as how said person is treated by their parents, relatives and peers constitutes a number of social situations? "Society has nothing to do with your personal choices or problems" the entire field of sociology would disagree with you. Also, "beholden to all the mess of adaptions" imagine being this anti-individualist. Should we all start wearing gray clothes and reciting passages from doctrine as well?

    • @anentiresleeveoforeos2087
      @anentiresleeveoforeos2087 3 роки тому +1

      @Pavor In this context, yes, it clearly does. How a society approaches one issue informs how it will approach another. It's extremely important that these kinds of situations are handled tactfully and by informed parties because the ramifications of not doing so measured in social, economic and cultural costs (degradation of social relationships, economic motivation, development of depression/dysphoria and suicidal tendencies, etc) are considerable and severe. Do you also disagree with mental health awareness campaigns and services? Or perhaps are you against suicide prevention hotlines? Surely someone killing themselves is a "social issue".
      It's not a 'personal issue' (as vague as that wording is) because there's no such thing. These decisions are made by the parents and influenced by society, the doctors themselves, medical institutions and academia, etc all while the intersex party themselves are young. You'd still be unreasonable even if you expected them to privately deal with it when they're adults but a significant point brought up in the video is that of operations performed on children and the effects of that. Is a newborn, a two year old or a five year old supposed to stand up and object to 'corrective' surgeries?
      There's also the association with gender and sexual issues to think about of which the general population is woefully ignorant about. For some anecdotal evidence of this, plenty of people in this comments section are confused about what intersex actually means and keep confusing it with gender identity. Is it not important to make this distinction and to inform the public about these topics? Or does well over 5% of the population not warrant a mention?
      Nice jab at my supposed country (it's not what you're thinking of). Are you one of those "Western civilization is doomed!" types?

      Hermaphroditism (full functionality of both male and female genitalia) in humans is impossible. • @sb-lx2dt
      @sb-lx2dt 3 роки тому

      It really depends on the condition, and if they’ve had surgery. One such example is a condition where a person develops as a woman but has internal testicles, and their bodies don’t masculinize in the womb because their testosterone receptors don’t work (CAIS). Their internal testicles produce testosterone, but their bodies transform it into estrogen when they can’t process the former. If these are removed, however, the woman would have to go through hormone therapy to replace the estrogen that their testes indirectly “produced” in order to properly go through puberty and live healthily.
