For intersex people -- those born with sex characteristics outside the traditional definitions of female and male -- the stakes to appear "normal" are high. Drawing on her personal experience, Susannah Temko reveals the shame, prejudice and harm faced by the intersex community, as they're forced to conform to a binary understanding of sex that ultimately hinders their health and well-being. She calls on us all to discard outdated notions of biological sex and accept the complexity within humanity.

I am an older intersex woman, and because I was surgically "normalized" (made male) after birth. Chromosome testing was not known in those days, and when puberty came around, I developed into a female. It took many years until I could hab the initial surgery reversed, and could begin to live my life as the female I am.
I am so happy for you young folks that you have a chance to live your life the way it was meant to be lived.
I think I'm intersex my boobs are so big and I bled while taking a bath today
This must be the best presentation I’ve ever watched. And I totally agree; fix prejudice, not healthy people.
I can’t grasp the courage it takes to stand up and talk about this....amazing person!
money
@@bananabanana6490 👎🏾 very tacky inappropriate response
The only reason it would take “courage” to do this is because of all of the stigma we as intersex people have been slapped with from the medical professionals and others. There’s nothing really to be courageous about when you’re literally talking about who and what you are and proving that it’s very very normal and that we aren’t the problem we’re literally just like everybody else. She is amazing though
So I am I
Yes to more intersex awareness. ❤✨
I cried at the end, it's really important to accept each other. I didn't know exactly how it is to be intersex. Much love.
And conversely intersex people don't know how to be male or female because we have no experience of being either, yet we are compelled to impersonate what we are not for the continued comfort of the majority, who might if they learn about our existence come to question religious teachings.
As an intersex person, I am glad about the increased awareness.
@Martyr4JesusTheChrist Satan will reveal himself to you on Friday.
I mean they're right in a way, doesn't A Diamond need medical help with their daily life? I was born with a condition too (not intersex) but I need medical help to live a more "normal" life. Sorry if I misunderstood, English isn't my first language.
@@madi2203 no. I don't. Intervention should only happen when there is a *physical* reason or if an individual would want that themselves. Not force it on parents and children to make me "look right" even as they destroy healthy sensation and functioning.
@@a_diamond I didn't mean surgery necessarily, more like medicine. Thank you for replying, this is all very informative.
@Martyr4JesusTheChrist you literally have no idea what issues being intersex does or doesn't cause me other than other people's uninformed superstitions. As such, excuse me if I don't take your advice. Please go troll elsewhere.
What a beautiful, articulate, intelligent woman. How could anybody “dislike” this video.
All this person is doing is asking to be respected and accepted as she is.
Everything she says is wise.
Hitting “dislike” is showing that there are so many people who can’t accept who this person is. The prejudice is heartbreaking.
Thank you for this presentation. It was revelatory and incredibly courageous.
I don't think most people disliking are doing it for prejudiced reasons. I think a good number of those people are doing so because this video is not necessarily under the category of Technology, Entertainment, or Design. If you subscribed to TED for those topics and instead you regularly get biology or other unrelated topics showing up in TED stream it could annoy certain people.
Personally I really liked this video and thought is was informative.
Absolutely love her courage and tone.

@@eliopacheco Susannah definitely sounds like it could be a male name..
Idk about y’all, but this had me crying in my truck.
As usual the comment section is awful, but this talk was great. The intersex/DSD community is horribly misunderstood and under-represented. Everyone deserves bodily autonomy at the very least; non-essential surgery should never be performed on those unable to consent.
A lot of the more recent comments are, thankfully, far from "awful"

Aw, she is such a lovely person. I have much empathy for her plight. I was not born intersex per se but my earliest memories in this male life was that i used to be a girl and proudly announced that to everyone and gladly feel a part of the group when chatting among women when someone walks by and generalizes the group as ladies( i accept it as a compliment)
you need some therapy
You gender expression is valid and those guys that commented otherwise are assholes. You're doing great :)
Gender is a construct. You acted like you wanted to act, and that is pure and good. And it sounds like you do now, too. I hope some day everyone can feel just as free to take part in groups they feel they belong in.
@John Strickland. Thanks for sharing this here. Have you explored that part about your past? From what I hear from my intersex friends, Some intersex people don't remember the interventions in their childhood. And on the other hand, some transgender girls are deeply convinced in their childhood that they are just girls and then only "learn" later that their body is male and they're supposed to be boys.
@Jack dude, if this is just attention seeking, just like don't pay attention, maybe?
Just watched Emily's TED as well. I'm glad to have learned more about intersex individuals. I never thought that something as simple as "M" or "F" on a form would cause many people a difficult and stressful existence. Thank you for opening my eyes.
Those rights you discuss about not being operated on your genitals without your consent should be given to boys undergoing circumcision.
This is extremely true, as well as in other cultures that practice genital mutilation. In many cultures, women will have their clitoris/clitoral hood removed or partially removed. It's horrible to do anything to someone's body when it is not necessary for a healthy life.
@Purva P You have never heard of religion?
@@nevarran The bible says it's okay to own slaves, should that be legal again? Religion isn't an excuse to harm others.

What an incredible woman. I don't know much about intersex people but this talk brought me to tears. I too have never felt good enough for various other reasons. I feel inspired after listening to this.
Thank you for this insight. I knew very little about intersexuality, and what I thought I knew, did stem from the idea that a person should be either a male (and look like one) or a female (and look like one). I kind of feel like a ‘broken specimen’ because I have not been able to carry a child. Doctors could not explain why and kind of ‘left it at that’. Knowing what that has done to me, my self image, self esteem, my relationship and later on recognizing how this has influenced me in my well being and my life choices; I cannot begin to understand what life has been like for you, Susannah, and all other people like and unlike you, dealing with intersexuality in any way. To think of how frequently and severely you would to explain that you are you and that you are not faulty, sick, disabled or defective because of that. I am sorry you had to go through all that. I am gratefull you did this ted talk, as it was helpfull to me. I hope to be able to be helpfull and respectfull to someone dealing with this if and when they decide to speak about their experiences with me.
please @ all the biology teachers in the world, play this in your classroom each and every year to each and every class, THIS IS IMPORTANT
At my high school they taught the general principle of this in freshman year biology
Very informative, thank you so much for sharing your inspiring story.
Do not try and fix something that isn’t broken. Go Sue!!! Came for the incredible talk. Stayed for the incredible pink pant suit. 🙌🏼
Would you say that to the trans community?
What I have learnt from-
The video: Very good things about the intersex community and that they exist, deserve rights and shouldn’t have surgery to “fix” them without their consent when they’re old enough :)
The comment section: people are dumb asf
Sounds like parents are selfish and making decisions .
Same thing with circumcision they don’t get consent when old enough. Watch change my mind only 2 gender than make a conclusion
Sadly, I'm not sure there is much of an intersex community (or at least - if there is, I can't find them). Given the "1.7%" statistic, facebook groups around intersex have very few members, and the intersex reddit is very quiet.
At this moment, 558 people down-voted this video. So I am supposed to understand, 558 people watched this video and chose not to learn a thing. This tells you much of the stupidity of some humans. SAF. Best wishes to all intersexed people. I will fight for your rights to be you unaltered by the stupid people around you.
It’s similar with the rest of the LGBT+ community, there’s so much scientific evidence yet some ppl either refuse to understand and/or just push their own agendas
It's a biological condition, yet just wait for the trolls to say that it's a choice.
No its not

@@at-tegreatest3739 Intersex is literally when there are physical differences to the persons genitalia. Suppose you didn't know that?

Thank you so much for talking about this topic and sharing your personal story. When I was a girl and adolescent, I love watching Wonder Woman, Six Million Dollar Man, Chips and Incredible Hulk. I love also Harry Potter.
This topic should be shared widely since this applies to most people. I'm pertaining to the Population of intersex. A lot of them are obviously blended with the other categories. There should be a way where they could easily get assistance in order for people to accept them without being judged or criticized. Just like the 2 sides of the coin. We could help them have a positive life. Anyways, I'll watch more vids. I don't have to explain everything hahaha

@@HolyGuardian25 dude I'm pretty sure you don't even know what intersex is
I just gave you a link with percentages of birth defects classified as intersex, it's not common at all
So what does it mean do u have both make and female parts
Gingers are as numerous on Earth as intersex people. I don't really consider that rare. We need to stop being so worried about what's in other people's pants!
There's way more of us than intersex people.
@@EuropeanQoheleth To be fair... red hair is a lot more visible than intersex conditions. We don't tend to advertise that our external genitalia, internal genitalia and/or hormones are "different".
intersex is different to what is going on with the trans stuff going on today. Of course, somebody born intersex (either both genitalia, or mis-matching chromosomes) should never have surgery to fix them...unless as an adult. How anyone can argue against that is beyond me.
What I understand by trans is people who feel comfortable with a certain effect but got an other. What is the difference their body still feels fine functioning a certain way but got too much of something they don't feel fine.
You're right intersex isn't transgender, but it can through appearance look like transgender. Further to, many of our community are forced to approach transition services to attempt to correct what we can of what surgeons did to use before we could consent to what was done to us. Then there is the other bunch the presenter up there alludes to - those that don't know they're intersex, but may be drawn to transition to answer a discomfort within, where to give an example of my own intersex variation of which I know most, doctors have determined people of my intersex variation ( the most common) are fifty times more likely to transition than XY/XX Binary. So those that would with ignorance abuse the transgender based upon what they believe are perverse choices, could in fact be abusing intersex people who were ' born that way ' for our only sin to be trying to find some modicum of comfort to support continued personal existence in a world designed to exclude us.
What I'm trying to understand is Why the down votes? SMH This is valid and very informative. Can you imagine how difficult this is for people born this way? Empathy is Priceless.
empathy is priceless, because there is a global supply deficit
@ PhantomsDesire : _"Why the down votes?"_ Fear.
@Pavor are 1% of intersex people part of the society?
@Pavor The status of the one isn't relevant to the many? Or, rather, you don't think the methods by which a doctor approaches and treats a patient as well as how said person is treated by their parents, relatives and peers constitutes a number of social situations? "Society has nothing to do with your personal choices or problems" the entire field of sociology would disagree with you. Also, "beholden to all the mess of adaptions" imagine being this anti-individualist. Should we all start wearing gray clothes and reciting passages from doctrine as well?
@Pavor In this context, yes, it clearly does. How a society approaches one issue informs how it will approach another. It's extremely important that these kinds of situations are handled tactfully and by informed parties because the ramifications of not doing so measured in social, economic and cultural costs (degradation of social relationships, economic motivation, development of depression/dysphoria and suicidal tendencies, etc) are considerable and severe. Do you also disagree with mental health awareness campaigns and services? Or perhaps are you against suicide prevention hotlines? Surely someone killing themselves is a "social issue".
It's not a 'personal issue' (as vague as that wording is) because there's no such thing. These decisions are made by the parents and influenced by society, the doctors themselves, medical institutions and academia, etc all while the intersex party themselves are young. You'd still be unreasonable even if you expected them to privately deal with it when they're adults but a significant point brought up in the video is that of operations performed on children and the effects of that. Is a newborn, a two year old or a five year old supposed to stand up and object to 'corrective' surgeries?
There's also the association with gender and sexual issues to think about of which the general population is woefully ignorant about. For some anecdotal evidence of this, plenty of people in this comments section are confused about what intersex actually means and keep confusing it with gender identity. Is it not important to make this distinction and to inform the public about these topics? Or does well over 5% of the population not warrant a mention?
Nice jab at my supposed country (it's not what you're thinking of). Are you one of those "Western civilization is doomed!" types?
I'm researching so I can write my intersex character correctly. I am so grateful you spoke on this.

I hope that people watch this and if they have an intersex child that they give that child time and a choice to make their own gender choice. Also doctors need to stop calling other doctors in to gawk at people who are different for "medical purposes".

@Martyr4JesusTheChrist
Have you not LOVE for this person?
For surely, if you walk in his path, then you love this child of God.

"If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same."
Every rule has an exception. If you(not we😊) resolve a particular math issue, we hv 2 follow the right rule with consideration to its exception otherwise it will not be right. Every rule has an exception. Intersex is an exception but we should consider them otherwise you will lose your humanity. Again, Every rule has exception.
@Martyr4JesusTheChrist you’re trying so hard to seem smart it’s obnoxiously obvious and why don’t you agree that we love them? Didn’t the bible (which all you homophobes just loooove to quote on a daily basis, using that one mistranslated sentence to deserve whether people deserve to live) tell us to love our neighbour as we love ourselves? Or you don’t agree with the bible but you’re a “martyr for Jesus the Christ”. I’m guessing you’re a martyr because you say these hateful, hateful things and not because you’re a Christian

I don't think these people will be shunned by society. If we can accept transpeople this should be no problem.
Acceptance is a given in a progressive society as long as it respects equality. The moment one group is seen to be given special privileges prejudice will soon follow.
Thanks for enlightenment and raising this subject. It's important to know about other people those are human like us and what ever they got is given by God and we should respect it by all means. I am with all my intersex friends. You are as normal and natural like others or like me. Love you all.

we are just beginning to learn about the categories of human beings. If our instruments and our concepts were refined enough we would be astonished to find that there are as many categories of human being as their are human beings and that each of these human beings is utterly unique and necessary for the well being of the whole. Break one human being and you impair the whole. Why do you suppose the world is so f##ked up today? Look around you. We are breaking one another right and left.
@Martyr4JesusTheChrist I suppose you believe the people that God created to be intersex are also "brain washed" and "mutants" as well since they aren't like you? Is that what you believe? If that is so, I pray for you, and for Satan to remove his influence from your heart

@@nathanielace7534 it can't possibly be too late. Intersex people are telling us they want parents to stop taking decisions on their kids bodies. I think they know better, maybe we should listen to them
Alice Gaiba kids actually do not know better when their brains are no where near developed and decision making processes aren’t even close to fully formed. There’s a reason why there are consent laws. If you encourage 5 year old children to just up and change genders you undermine the whole basis behind consent in the process while also guaranteeing serious mental problems in the future. Real surprising that democratic politicians are pushing these narratives.
@@LeoDeBrowne no one says they have to decide when they are kids. They will decide once they grow up. Again, I'm not saying this. Intersex people are saying that they would have preferred for their parents to wait and let them take the decision as adults

really, there. is a good chance that someone in your school is intersex.
She's referring to hermaphrodite. They've always existed in every species. The child of Hermes and Aphrodite was referred to in Greek legend. I've bagged one when hunting deer. It has to be a difficult life to navigate.
That's what I thought. The term Intersex confused me.
she did go there, but I don't know. I think she may be saying there are varying degrees due to hormones?
The mythological term “hermaphrodite” implies that a person is both fully male and fully female. This is a physiologic impossibility. (I looked it up on internet cause I was curious too, it's an outdated term)
Hermaphroditism (full functionality of both male and female genitalia) in humans is impossible. And many intersex people consider that term a slur as it may be associated with mythological beasts and animals like snails and certain fish (that actually are hermaphrodites) so I’d be careful of how to use it.
Oh, and also the story of how Hermaphroditus became part man part woman is really disturbing given that *[TW!]* it happened because a pedophilic rapist nymph forced herself on him when he was a 15 year old boy and fused herself with him against his will.
I’ve honestly never even know about intersex people until about a week ago. My friend got me into this game that had this lgbtqia+ avatar. The only one I didn’t know was the i. I know now. It’s weird that the moment that I found out about this things pop up around it. Happened before with other things I didn’t know, then I found out and ever since had random encounters of that thing being brought up.
So save it name ? Ip chrome it using info me not 7se chrome app
Love is for all of us without any exceptions
That sounds just like those empty "motivational quotes" that get spammed all over the internet.
Just I am curious if this condition affects development of the children?🤔 Do they need help in puberty like hormone therapy?
It really depends on the condition, and if they’ve had surgery. One such example is a condition where a person develops as a woman but has internal testicles, and their bodies don’t masculinize in the womb because their testosterone receptors don’t work (CAIS). Their internal testicles produce testosterone, but their bodies transform it into estrogen when they can’t process the former. If these are removed, however, the woman would have to go through hormone therapy to replace the estrogen that their testes indirectly “produced” in order to properly go through puberty and live healthily.
Very brave, she is a woman but how we define what a woman or man is can not be drawn from our genitalia.
I love ur accent very much.
