How much hay do the highland cows need?

- This year we were able to get almost half of our hay needs from baling our own pasture. In this video we talk about how we determine how much hay we need for the cows throughout the winter.

Lots of blood sweat and tears to say nothing of time and money. I give you my best wishes. I am so impressed by those that can put in that type of effort and commitment to fulfill their dream!
I'm amazed at the knowledge farmers and ranchers have to know to run their business.
I'VE NEVER SEEN THE COW TO HAY RATIO DONE LIKE THAT. WOW. THANKYOU SO MUCH FOR THAT INFO. THE THINGS I LEARN FROM YOU CHANNEL. GOD BLESS AND MAY YOUR FAMILY HAVE A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS.
I am wanting to raise Coos. While I wait, I am learning everything possible. You have no idea how much I appreciate you sharing valuable information. Thank you and Merry Christmas.
Yes, these cows are much different than other cows because of the horns. I watch Adler farms and his are just babies right now. Walker Farm Fam has full grown ones, and they tend to whip those horns around so look out. They probably in most cases don't mean to hurt someone but they could easily swing their heads if you aren't watching out. Thanks for sharing and have a Merry Christmas and safe New Year.
Rhett, thanks for the info vid. I’m not a farmer, but always interested in learning and understanding the various lifestyles that make up our world!

Rhett, these videos are great. So much information. Do the left over bales keep ok for next Winter? Merry Christmas to the family & stay safe🎄🎅🏼 Take care & cheers 🐨🦘🥰
As a general rule hay whether in bake, rolls or loose deteriorates over time. The denser the bale the longer it lasts. Hay stored in sheds/barns lasts longer than hay in the open. Hay wrapped in multiple plastic layers lasts longer than hay wrapped on thin net mesh. Hay exposed to moisture rain, snow, ice, mud does not last as long as that kept dry. Hay which gets badly wet or lays in water may get mouldy which is highly dangerous. Hay which is several years old can be used as bedding or garden mulch if no longer suitable for stock. Old old hay can be fed to stock if necessary as long as there is no mould but the animals will not be keen to devour it.
@@susanmarsh4351 heh Susan, thanks very much for the info. I’m not a farmer so it’s interesting to find all this out. So much more to farming than people realise. Take care😊

Merry Christmas
Congrats on your new handling system
Retired now family had cows before round bales were popular we baled and purchase have in smaller 100 lb +/- bales depending on quality hay old fashion bales at least in my mind less waste from weather made easier to figure how many bales to feed there also another factor to remember pregnant cow need more eating for two lol and how much for yearlings not pregnant we fed twice daily
Just an after thought when would put up the small bales either in barn or field stack we would salt each layer of bales to for 2 reasons 1 to draw moisture out of the bales to prevent mold / mildew and risk of spontaneous combustion 2 salt in the hay when feeding make sure cows are getting salt and encouraging to drink water
That's a lot of hay. Never gave winter feeding a thought as other than maybe a week of snow we have sunlight almost everyday, summer is out bad time out here in the desert, everything drys up and dies. I always dreamed to have a hobby farm but after watching several channels that have different animals in large quantities there's no way I can manage it alone. So I'm downsizing to just enough chickens to keep me fed in eggs and meat.
God bless you and your family and your farm. Merry Christmas 🎄
Happy holidays to you and your family!🧑🎄🙏😻
Hi 👋 there from McMahons Creek, Victoria, Australia 🇦🇺
Hello there!
Loving the Highland Cattle. They would do well up here and I’m sure there’s breaders nearby. Thanks for your video feeds 😊
I like in the sticks, alpine National park rain forest but just have my Staffordshire bull terrier and my gardener, “Wiggy “ my poled Dwarf Nigerian goat
When your fold increases consider getting a scale for the soot. Then you will have a better idea of how much they weigh. Have a Merry Christmas 🎅 🎄.
Do you belong to FBN?
Is that my favorite cow tender who looks like Kid Rock 🤭😉🥰😍
Yay for fresh hay(;
Great figuring!! Lol
Did you name it copper ?
What they actually eat? What they play in? Both? 😄
Hello @lindaarnold5683 I'm impressed with your comment, I would like to be friends if you don't mind. What part of the world are you from?...Costachel.
Our highland cattle get hay all winter
❤❤❤❤❤❤
This is typical overspend on a tractor , mower and bayler
Not when that person is a full time farmer and farms a few thousand acres
👍
🥰❤
