The glider was incorrectly rigged leaving the pilot with no control of the glider :-( This shouldn't normally happen; if the pilot had performed proper pre-flight checks this would have been avoided. Hang gliding isn't very forgiving of mistakes!
Sir, many thanks for your attentiveness and concern for others; a true credit to the sport. Thanks also for the link and clarification. Fly safe - fight gravity!
I was in the same situation. It was 1980 in Tzaneen, South Africa. We were a group of ~5, (Hennie Prinsloo, Bokkie Luger, Colin,Drew and I, Ters) flying off Wolkberg/ Cloud mountains. I left last after a thunder storm passed. The guy in front was a heavy chap Drew? also a champion water polo athlete. He left about half an hour earlier. (He was forbidden to join us because of his team's upcoming championships). Any way I jumped off (3000ft above the floor ) and followed an eagle in a fantastic thermal. Just as I though I am going to have the flight of my life, I saw Drew approaching end finals over the magnificent Transvaal bush veld, heading for the plowed field. Unbelievable, his left wingtip hit the very last tree, and the glider spinned 180 deg. There was no one near and the cars were very far from getting gown there. I had to go down, fast! They say height is money in the bank and that aft'noon I was rich. Unfortunately I had to spend that money very fast. I flew to right above him, still perhaps 4000 ft up and just could not get down. I did wing over after wing over, stalls upon stalls. Aerobatics galore. Fantastic feeling however it felt that whatever I do, I just could not get that glider down. Eventually I landed at about the same time first car arrived. Drew's arm were broken in two places. We braced it with a T-shirt and rushed him to the Pietersburg hospital, some 80/ 90 kilometers away. No Heli- casivacs for us. This is Africa! Man those were the days.
Well done on spotting a fellow pilot having difficulty, from watching this video it looks like you either saved a life or prevented him further injury and suffering before more help arrived, there's one or two negative comments here aimed at the lack of action in the video...fools who don't fly. I bet your heart was pounding, plenty of action in this video if you know how unforgiving the sky is.

I have thought rigid wing gliders suck ever since flying my Delta Wing 6D with Icarus 1’s at Sylmar 30 years ago and seeing my buddy John Morrison in a body cast after his accident. So glad this pilot is ok!

Aren't you supposed to leave your glider with the nose pointing down towards the ground to prevent it from flying off? (remembering from some hang gliding guidebook I read in the library back at uni 28 years ago!!!)
That's one way, the other option is to turn the glider the other way around with the nose up pointing 45 degrees from down wind. That keeps the sail out of the dirt!
Cool. Thanks for confirming! My memory is still working fine then! :oP I'm hoping I'll have more time next year to finally try out hang gliding and get my license to fly... I've always wanted to do this!
He set it down correctly in the vid. You set them with keel (tail) to the wind. The old dorito-shaped delta gliders from the 70-80s got set nose-down though typically.
Um, I don't really know what you mean dude.......if a hang glider was to have enough structure around the pilot to protect him, the extra weight and drag would stop it being able to fly / soar. Even motorised trikes don't really protect the pilot due to weight restrictions. Sail planes add a little protection, but they fly so much faster that it would help only a little bit. (And need to be towed up by a plane due to their size & weight)
Most of us carry mobile phones. Can't use them from the air but when I got to the scene and made the initial assessment we were able to alert emergency services and pin point exactly where we were with GPS. Got to love this technology!
Gliding takes a certain character - you have no power and are at the mercy of the winds and your own wits. Glider pilots have a true understanding of trading energy for altitude. People wondering why he didn't just drop out of the air have to realize that the higher you are the more your potential energy is. That potential energy will be traded into kinetic energy when changing altitudes (or you can change kinetic to potential by gaining altitude). You can't just trade a bunch of altitude and hope to land - your speed upon landing will be so great that you will end up injured, or dead, next to the guy you are trying to save. When the video was published the accident was being investigated. Some of the earlier comments answered your questions but I'll happily answer again. So why didn't you face the A frame of your kite in the direction of the downed pilot so we could all see just what it was you were doing before the car arrived?
Wasn't really thinking about framing of the video at the time; that was the fastest way to secure my glider and get to the casualty. Positioning the glider in that direction prevents the wind from getting under the wing and flipping it over.
Did you find the cause?? I once insisted on a crashed glider beinng checked before anyone moved it, thank god we did as we found the cause. Stopped it hapening again too. glad this guy was okay as was the chap I was above apart from broken legs and cuts and brueses. I will add he latter flew with two plaster cast on, we had to more or less throw him on take off and catch him on landing, stupid I know but he did enjoy that flight. he still flys to this day..Cheers pete
Shit! Kudos on you, pilot. This is a great demonstration of airmanship. Would love to have details of the accident (flap problem on the rigid?). But I suppose the pilot wasn’t in the best mood for tales. Glad to hear he’ll recover!

Can a glider land any time he/she wants? How does a glider "put on the breaks“?
A glider can land by simply flying away from areas of lift. In this video, flying away from the hill sufficed. A hang glider can get down faster by flying fast and increasing drag. I did all of this in the video but it still took a while to get down!

Yea, not high. But still, deployment would have reduced his ground speed / impact.
If you have an uncontrollable glider it's time to toss.

Could get down even much faster than that with spirals and wingovers, but this looked like rough air and he went for the safest way! Also seeing someone crash isn’t the best motivator for aerobatics.
Were you on Kingston Ridge?
Yes, commonly referred to as Swanborough by the local pilots.
If you fart in one of those hang wings can you still smell it?
Downwind you would I reckon
video games have proven that if you roll upon landing, you'll take no fall damage .
GTA V much
Ironically, the other common fall damage negator is, in fact, hang gliders. xD
Why your connection with glider looks rotated?
There's a slight twist in the hang loop where I have extended it. The crab often twists through 90 degrees because if it.
So I take it that this glider can not be controlled by weight shift?
What a hero
I wonder how the proliferation of wind turbines on ridges is affecting the safety of this sport, not to mention all the tarnished scenery.

That's the safest way to quickly park the glider so it doesn't blow away by the wind. Down wash from the helicopter was another thing!
did he get ill during the flight or something?
There was a problem with the glider and the pilot had no control.
This video shows pretty much nothing.

Details of the cause of the accident was published in the BHPAs SkyWings magazine: morphfx.co.uk/mobile/hang-gliding/diary.php?date=29Sep2013#mediaId=220
Did he shit on himself in mid flight???
good landing
If God wanted us to fly he wouldn't have given us scuba diving fins...
- a very lucky man until that medical bill arrives.
Hello people, do not understand what happened to him, for I speak not this indioma,'m Brazilian. Who can tell me what you hear will be very grateful. You can leave the comment I translate!
Jim Baker Ok Jim Baker!!!
Not after he gets the ambulance bill

A Video of a NON-Crashing Hang glider with a helicopter at the end - What a load of crap
Jason Sage Lol, someone else crashed. If you were paying attention you would’ve seen, but you were too busy complaining.
I was paying attention you condescending PUKE, did you see a crash or a crashed kite? I used to fly these things - its a disappointing video...
And you're an accusatory piece of work. At least my disdain was for a video, you attacked me personally for an opinion...
At least I can fly one of them fuckers without crashing.
It's just a video of a dude flying and then landing. Nothing more.
