  • This is the Bark River Bushcraft Scout in Magnacut. I have been very impressed with this little knife and with Magnacut. So far it is checking all the boxes for a knife of this size and intended use. A big reason for making this video is in response to the Dutch Bushcraft Knives video where they break this knife. I think this knife needs a video to redeem it and show what should really be expected if you buy one of these knives rather than an opinion formed from watching a knife breaking video with a knife having a one in a million steel defect. DBK did a good job of explaining at the end of their video what the cause of their knife breaking was and that it was not Bark River’s fault but I still wanted to give the knife a fair showing!

i have the mini gunny and its a perfect knife for that category! no brand is perfect but I like how brk actually makes a strong effort to put out the best steels and designs for the categories they participate in.

You convinced me to buy the gucci Desert Ironwood burl with mosaic pins, I already have a functional magnacut beater in the bravo LT, I just love the look of this knife, small enough to be an EDC and be a conversation starter. Not for batoning, just bring an axe.

Ya, I agree GNOMES. My Scout just arrived in the mail, the last of the 1st production run. It's too expensive & pretty to beat on. Turquoise G10, black liners & mosaic pins. My Mora Black & my hatchet will do the tough jobs, the beautiful Barky will slice up camp meals & make people drool.😉

This wasn't much of test- batoning a green twig? What does that prove? Ain't gonna start a fire with that and this can be done with a $20 folder. It could have been a decent blade if BR left off the sharp jimping... A pity they didn't do a run of the ultralite bush crafter in magna, in lieu of the second run of scouts.

Nice test, that blade performed really well. From most of what i see and read, magnacut is supposed to be comparable to m4 in toughness... so even a thin blade should be able to take a decent beating. I have yet to try it out but will soon when my pre-order comes through ;)

I am sure you’ll be very happy with the knife! It’s very similar to Cruwear from my experience so far. Well in terms of the edge fineness and retention. Very impressed so far! Thanks for watching

I been batoning wood with my Scout. 2 to 2 1/2 inch wood is just about no problem really. If the wood is knotty then yeah use a bigger knife or hatchet. I'm confident in the Scout as long as I'm paying attention to if it bends, like you said its very thin. Magnacut is great in this knife but its not a magic steel. It will chip when you hit sand so make sure you pay attention to how "clean" your wood is before smacking on it!

Looks like you are down at the coast. That hard green wood looks like vine maple. I’m in BC too. I’m not confident in my Bushcraft Scout after seeing the DBK failure in the steel. No way of knowing you got a lemon unless you stress it. I’ll stick to my 3V Bushcrafter for now.

Yes im on Vancouver island. I think the odds of having an issue with the steel like they did are so incredibly slim that I wouldn’t worry about it. If there was a serious issue with the batch of steel I think we would be seeing more than one knife with a problem and Bark River would likely stop production in the other knives in Magnacut? I hope I’m right anyways haha! I have a 3V Bushcrafter and it’s heck of a good knife. It’s superior to the scout in pretty much every way other than it’s size for being easy to carry. I prefer larger knives and carry fixed blade most days anyways. No office jobs for me!

Where do you pick one up?
Ebay has one listing made out of horn for 420.
Not sure I'm gonna get that one

I'm not sure where you are, but the tree looks like it could be Blackthorn. Wood is great for things like walking sticks. Really tough. Berries can be made into a jam, though I've never tried that.

I’m in British Columbia Canada. I believe the tree is a black hawthorn. I think they must be in the same family of tree. They look very close to the same tree with different names. I was surprised at how tough it was. I was surprised at how tough it was!

If I were you I'd keep that little thorn tree in mind if you were bushcrafting, building a shelter you could literally use them as nails if you pre-drilled holes for them I bet they would hold stuff together quite nicely 🤔🤷‍♂️

Is "crack point propagation" equivalent to a stress riser? ... The Common Raven, Corvus corax, has the largest brain volume to body mass ratio of any bird species. You might enjoy reading 'Ravens In Winter' and 'The Mind of the Raven' by the biologist Bernd Heinrich.

    • @gravytrainoutdoors
      @gravytrainoutdoors  2 місяці тому +1

Stress risers are the sharp corners that aren’t rounded to diffuse the stress. I can’t remember in which context I was talking about crack point propagation but it refers to fracture mechanics after a crack starts. The stress riser is the point in which the tensile stress bottles up and a fracture of the steel is most likely to occur at.

Knife makers purchase the steel from suppliers they don't make it themself...

Ahhh buddy, you do realize them cukes have a wax layer on them on the skins and it needs to be scraped off or they usually get peeled unless they're farm or garden fresh ofcourse but the store bought ones have a layer of wax on them and I hope you didn't just toss em in that pan with wax all over them lol-ol-ol it sure looked like the wax was still on the blade as you started to slice up them sausages 🤦‍♂️

You could have chosen a tree that was dead and not alive.
