I've been subbed to Corridor and Corridor Crew for over a year and just found you had a channel today. Damn, I suck. Thanks for this. IT really helped me understand HDR a lot better.
I didn't know you're back! I was hoping to find a good HDRI Workflow tutorial, and I found a tut by the member of the fricking Corridor Digital crew. Brilliant!
Just found your channel here aside from Corridor. Instant sub. As VFX artists, you and Corridor have completely rewired how I approach scenes as a director.
Thank you Clint! I was asked to shoot HDRIs for a production and I'm completely new to it. Yes! Been waiting for this for a long time! I use custom HDRIs but there are a few tricky things about it! The Dynamic Range for a cloudless sky is problematic, actually, because it makes my stuff in the scene blue, because the hdri catches the color of the sky, while video camera does not and it's blown out.
But this is a good thing. You want the full range of light and color. You just need to composite the HDRI in your 3D program to match it to your footage. I'm actually live on c4dlive.com walking about this process right now. Come hang.

really really well explained. I already knew the process, but the fact that you made an HDRi video, made me really think it was a chrome ball. I thought that you would explain the concept with it ^^'
You can also use a drone! I just figured out that my Dji Mavic Pro has a ¨panorama¨ option. It takes a photo at every angle in a full 360, and also 45 degrees tilt up and down, creating a full 360 panorama!
Hi Clint, Can you explain how you have created that animated reflection plate on that CG Ball. Usually, when we put a HDRI in our dome light, it lights up the scene and we can see that HDRI image reflection on the CG object. But here I can see your movements is reflecting on that CG Ball. Your explanation will help me a lot. Thanks in advance ✌️😁
If you're trying to have it reflect your environment, just take your HDRI from the average middle point of your scene. Doesn't matter how big it is. You can also roll a video and throw it onto cards that your reflective object might reflect. It's how Wren did the first shot of Anime Self Driving Cars, or how I did the couple shots in this tutorial that show my moving reflection.
You could have said “It would be like Frodo marching all the way to Mordor, and at the end he’s like “I am just gonna keep the ring for myself”... which is what actually happened... in history.
Awesome video! May I suggest using PTGui to do the stitching and HDR generation. ILM paid them a lot of money to make a linux version to run on their pipeline. The latest version of PTGui uses Nvidia based gfx cards for accelerated stitching and HDR tone adjustment. It is fast! Also a circular fisheye lens with a Nodal Ninja will speed up the photo taking process if you are using a DSLR.
Solid tips right here. Yeah I read a blog by HDRI Haven and they said 20mm lens with about 40% overlap for best results. They use PTGui as well. But for me that's overkill at the moment, just because I prefer them on the 360 camera anyway.
@@pwnisher True! I used to hack my HDRIs with the Nodal Ninja and a DSLR setup, but nothing beats the convenience of using a 360 camera. I can setup and take a multiple HDRs in the same amount of time I need to take one HDR on the DSLR setup! I personally use the older ONEX and you are right for lighting purposes, they are more than sufficient. I have asked my students to watch your video!
@@weeliano Hi there I have a question that I just posted to Clint, and it would appear you would have the answer as well! would you mind enlightening me as a newbe to this process! Hi Clint can you please clarify a few things for me... The process is very clear and the video is great but I am left with a few questions. With the insta360 are you able to Stitch your Bracketed images together just using the proprietary software? or do you still need to take your bracketed images and create your final HDRI's using Lightroom or P.S. PTGui, or Photomatix? I ask this because I recently purchased a Ricoh Theta SC, for the sole intention of using it to create HDRI's for CG realistic character creation in Blender. The problem I am coming up against is that it would seem there is no way of getting around Photo Shop, for creating the final HDRI! I wouldn't mind so much, but the reality is that I can not justify an Adobe subscription for the sole purpose of creating HDRI finishes! Do you have experience with PTGui and or Photomatix, and if so which do you prefer? Thanks again the video is awesome
Hi Paul, I have used PTGui to stitch together photos taken with a fisheye lens on the my DSLR. I also used the insta360 1st generation camera to take manual bracketed photos and then stitch them together using PTGui. I haven't done it for a while though, what I remember is that you have to export the unprocessed fisheye images from the insta360 from both sides and then stack and stitch the multi-exposures in PTGui, what I remembered with the insta360 is that it is not so straight forward to export to 2 halves. When exported you will have a pair of circular images, if you take a basic 3 exposures, then you will have a set of 6 circular images. PTGui is smart enough to auto detect, arrange and stitch them together. In terms of creating a true 360 HDRI, you are better off using PTGUi compared to photoshop as it offers way more control and export options. The final image is usually a HDR or EXR.
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I’m working on making an HDRI for Horizon Forbidden West and this tutorial got me going in the right direction. I really hope this works because my laptop which is trying to stitch the photos has been stuck at 33% completion for a while now.

@@MorganLBell-bv4me I don't know if you still need an answer but basically for the intro part he put in the scene a plane with his video on (with him moving) so the ball is catching that reflection, you can see that he rendered it without the video right after the video (where there's only the still HDRI reflected even if he's moving). That's a step after dealing with your HDRI environment and camera so that you can mess with the scene and add objects

Very nice, thanks Clint.
Cool. Remember when Corridor used to do tutorials?
Awesome video bro
Dude how did you get yourself moving in the reflection of the cg ball?
I just film a plate of me doing my action then throw that up on a 3d card in my scene.
@@pwnisher Gonna need a tutorial just for this
@@MorganLBell-bv4me I don't know if you still need an answer but basically for the intro part he put in the scene a plane with his video on (with him moving) so the ball is catching that reflection, you can see that he rendered it without the video right after the video (where there's only the still HDRI reflected even if he's moving). That's a step after dealing with your HDRI environment and camera so that you can mess with the scene and add objects
