Amy, your moving quilt display system makes me laugh every time. It must be fun to live at your house!
It has its moments 😝. Thanks for watching.
Please, please don't ever change the "sliding quilt system" it is a PERFECT antedote for the overly technical society we live in. Also reminds me of something my dad would do. Thanks for the video. Enjoying your channel quite a bit.
Thank you so much. As long as I can convince my guys to help me I’ll keep it up!
“Because I’m extra.” This quote will make me smile all day. So completely relatable! Thank you for being extra too and sharing!
We gotta stick together! 😝😝😝
I love your easy, very pleasant, informative presentation style. Thanks so much for sharing your creativity with me. 🎶💖💐
You are so welcome! Thank YOU for being here!
You should patent the Toby sliding quilt system. :)
For quick patterns, I have a few: I love the Film at Five quilt. It is a free scrap quilt pattern on the wedding dress blue blog with fantastic instructions including excellent pressing instructions. It unifies pretty much any combination of colors. You use scrap 2.5” squares or you can strip piece units and subcut into sets of 5 2.5” squares. You add a background fabric like white or black or whatever will set off the colors of your blocks. It makes a beautiful quilt. It does have some pieced sashing so not quite as zippy as some, but if you have just a little more time, it makes a really high impact quilt and is a great scrap buster.
Another thing I like to do is surround a gorgeous panel with a wide border of 2.5” squares. Again you can strip piece and subcut to get strips of squares and mix the units up to make it look more random. Pat Sloan’s March 2023 block a day pattern was also a really fast sew. I cut and pieced 48 blocks in a single day last weekend. If I needed to rush I could complete the quilt this weekend. Adding 1 inch and 3.5 inch (finished) borders makes it a really nice sized throw at around 57 x 73.
Lastly, I love the It’s Sew Emma birthday cake quilt in the Perfect 10 book. It looks complicated but is very easy to piece. The book is available from Fat Quarter Shop in print or digital pdf form and is full of pretty, quick quilts. I don’t always cut and piece their way, but the blocks are easy to convert to whatever method you want to use (although fabric requirements might vary). I use my own stash rather than layer cakes. Because layer cake quilts are inherently scrappy, it is easy to add fabrics and add blocks to make the quilts larger, so for $14, I definitely recommend adding this book to your quilting library. Save money -just get the book and skip the set with the creative grids perfect 10 ruler- the smallest marking increment is 1/2”. That may be fine for the quilts in this book but why not make the ruler more usable for other projects? Ugh.
Those are all great ideas. Thank you so much for the detail - I’m a details girl! I have the perfect 10 book and the perfect 5 both are great and it’s so Emma patterns are impeccably written and easy to adapt. I didn’t cat Pat’s quilt this year but I’ll go check it out and the film at 5 is a new one to me that I am excited to explore.
Thanks so much for watching and for sharing!
Adorable “fancy sliding quilt system”
I always have a chuckle (or more) during your fun videos
😊 thank you
Yellow Brick Road for any size quilt is super fast.
It seems that Everyone except me knows this pattern. It looks awesome. Thanks for sharing!
The best display system 👌 I've ever seen and I love the patterns. 🎉 go to the help.thank you.
You are so welcome! Thank YOU for watching.
I love to use fabric cafe 3 yard quilt pattern books for all my charity and quick quilts. I Normally can get one done under 5 hours. That includes long arming it. I find myself at times scraping up their patterns to make it work for me.
Those ARE great! Thanks
My go-to is the disappearing 9-patch. It’s so versatile.
I love it too. Thanks so much!
Your son upstaged you in this video! He has some serious guns to hold up his arms for as long as he did! What a trouper! 😂
Totally! He is amazing! Thanks for watching.
Have enlarged one block ( Missouri star) for a baby quilt. Using a large print to give it interest
Thank you for all these quick quilt ideas Amy! Love all of them. ❤ I am a one and done quilter usually but when I need a quick one I use my Fabric Cafe 3 yard quilt books. 🎉
You are so welcome! Those 3-yards are fun quilts. Thanks for sharing.
These are great. I make most of my quilts for charity so quick and easy and scrappy are my favorite kinds! One of my favorites is the free Moda Love Charm Quit pattern. It’s a star made of all squares and HSTs. I made a king-sized one using a layer cake… It’s 64 blocks (about half HSTs and half squares) and took me maybe 2 hours to piece. It was so simple to sew for HUGE impact. And you could make it any size by just changing the size of your starting square. Thanks for sharing!
Wonderful. I’ll check it out! Thanks for sharing.
Fat quarter shop isn't allowing me to download the free quilt pattern.
I’m not sure why that’s happening. It works for me both from my desktop and my iPhone. Does anyone else have this issue or any guesses?
I love all of these. And don’t ever change your display system. It’s so great! I make a lot random of 5” square baby quilts.
Thank you!
Love all these fast and easy quilts. Your son did a great job showcasing all these beautiful quilts!
Thank you so much! I agree but I might be biased 😊
My go-to is a disappearing 9-patch. I’ve done it so many times, I hardly have to think about it.
Awesome. I love how that one works with any size starting square. Thank you.
Great video and love the moving quilt system, great job Toby. My go to is turning twenty or yellow brick road. very similar but different size blocks.
Thank you. I have a turning 20 quilt we love!
Wow, that Starry Night quilt is gorgeous! Thanks Toby, you are an amazing quilt wrangler. Take care, be well
Thank you so much and I’ll pass along your kind words to Toby.
Great ideas! Love the “sliding system “
Thanks so much!
As a scrap quilter who does mostly donation quilts, these are phenomenal!! I’m adding them to my collection of patterns…
Kudos to Toby- good help is hard to find 😊. Happy to have found you and your videos.
Awesome. I hope you love them and I’ll pass along your kind comments to Toby. I’m glad you’re here!
First time I have seen your site I’ll be back
I’m glad you’re here!
I am finally able to confidently piece easy squares and 1/2 square triangles but determining how to quilt my masterpiece is overwhelming!
Oh that can be overwhelming! It’s like a blank page when you had a writing assignment in school. Just keep reminding yourself that quilted/finished is better than perfect. Thanks so much for watching.
Loved the content in this video. I cracked up when you said "Bitcoin" was a favorite go to. I've been working on one for two years! It is in my ufo challenge pile and just have a little bit to finish. I think I will get it done this year! I just love that you;re 'extra', puts a smile in my day everytime I watch and can't wait for the next one.
Thank you so much. One of my favorite things about bitcoin is that it will wait for you. It’s not always quick as those pieces are tiny but it is easy and you can do it as you have time or as you have ‘bit’ to add to it.
Love your moving quilt system. You crack me up, and some days, that’s important! Plus you have given me so many ideas for storing and using my scraps! Thank you! Thank you!
I'm so glad! Thank you so much for watching.
My favorite go-to pattern is the disappearing 9-patch. I have made them using 5" squares and 10' squares. I saw Jenny doan make one recently where all her centers were white and I thought that looked better than my just randomly placing the 9 squares together. I, too, like Villa Rosa postcards! And I have recently been enamored with FabricCafe quilts.
Super fun. I love both the disappearing 9 and the fabric cafe patterns. Try a bright pop of color in the center of your nine patch- it’s so much fun to watch it dance around the quilt once divided. Thanks so much for watching and sharing.
Great suggestions! A lot of wisdom in your observations about these quilt patterns - thanks!
I am not usually racing on a quilt, but I am always working down my stash and scraps, especially after absorbing my mom’s extensive stash. And I have very few pre-cuts. Typically, I am making my own ‘pre-cuts’ 2” strips, 2 and 2.5 squares, etc. The patterns you suggested are really perfect for my situation.
Favorites: light/dark crossing Irish Chain blocks, rail fence, half square triangles, nine patch, Buckeye block, scrappy Churn Dash, flying geese.
If I have a bunch of the same scraps. I’ll make a bunch of that same block. Easy to stretch out the number of identical blocks or unify scrappy blocks combining with enough of a background fabric to suit the project size from a table runner to a large quilt.
For leftover stitch and flip or other tiny triangles, I will sew them into half square triangles and then into mixed or matched pinwheel blocks that can be sized up using a blender into larger sized blocks.
Love your channel!❤
Thank you so much! These are awesome ideas I have to look up a buckeye block. My favorite patterns are the ones that are flexible. Kind of like kitchen tools - no unitaskers!
Thanks for being here and for sharing.
I've just started quilting and the pattern I've done is a four patch alternating with a solid square. I make scrapy 6.5" four patches and alternate with a 6.5" white-on-white. My coworker suggested for beginners is to try a brick pattern of rectangles so it's not too much pressure to get things lined up perfectly.
Sounds great! Those are both great ideas. Thank you for watching!
@@amydement. I love it when creators are active in the comments, but how do you have time?
I fit it in when and where I can. If it becomes overwhelming I’ll cross that bridge. But for now… I’m having too much fun to quit!
I’m a beginner. I like using a panel for the center and then doing a keyboard border with coordinating colors. I can see where I started and how I improved but others (non-quilters) don’t notice. I have several projects to do and am looking forward to clearing them out by the end of 2024.
That’s a great idea. Thank you for sharing.
Railfence is my go-to quick quilt pattern for a quilt "in a hurry." Love this video! Thank you Amy
You are so welcome! Thank YOU for watching!
I have to add the disappearing 9 patch... especially for fast Baby quilt. using 6 or 6.5' ruler depending on what I have
Excellent- yes. Thank you!
Great quilts which just goes to show that the pattern doesn't need to be complicated! Thanks for sharing.
You are so welcome!
Beautiful quilts!!! Love easy not so easy patterns! I try to use my stash and scraps but they multiply in the dark! My go to pattern gas always been the rail fence pattern. It was the first quilt I ever made and I still love it!
Thank you. Rail fence works so many ways and it’s fun to play with color and design within the layout - never get bored!
I make string pieced blocks on an 8 1/2” muslin foundation and keep them on hand when I need a quickie quilt. My goal is to get all my strings used by the end of the year. I don’t think is is going to happen. 🤪
That sounds like a great system. Isn’t it funny how you can make and make so many string blocks and then you look at the bin and can’t even tell you’ve been in there! Thanks for watching and sharing
Hi Amy. There are cookie tins on my shelves filled with string blocks, which I sew together in a hurry if I need to. The colours give me joy and keep me challenged on how to mix & match. As always, your video was fantastic and made me smile. A snowy hug from Canada.
That sounds so joyful! Snow not so much. I know it’s because I’ve always lived in the southern us and snow means being stuck in the house, but you enjoy it’s beauty! Thanks for watching and sharing
This was fabulous! You reminded me that I have Bonnie Hunter’s bit coin pattern. Now where did that go?
Oh wonderful! 😁😁🤣
Thanks for all the wonderful quick quilt ideas! I need to make a few of those. Your quilts are beautiful!! ❤
Thank you.
Just Get it Done Quilts has a series of scrap buster quilt patterns that I have been working my way thru .. I do the free patterns on her web page for donation quilts
Those are great! I like that most are awesome for busy large scale prints - that can be hard to find! Thanks for that resource and thanks for watching.
If I need a quilt in a hurry, I’ll often pick one of the 3 yard quilt patterns. I’ll also do a disappearing 9 patch.
Those are great choices. Thank you for sharing.
checkerboard. I like that the simplicity of the shape/piecing allows the fabric choices to shine & allows for variety - I haven't done monochromatic like the two that you showed, I just stick with light & dark. I make a lot of spiderwebs too, very satisfying, but they aren't quick.
Thanks for sharing. My 2” leader/ended UFO from the UFO video is just light and dark as well. Completely random.
Amy, another great free pattern: Sundance (a giant squash blossom). Free from Polka Dot Chair. Super fast and easy. I’m working on one right now.
Sounds great! Thanks.
Your son is a great quilt displayer today! Loved your quick finish quilts… rail fence is my new go to quilt pattern! Sew many variations… but 4 patches are fun too… as are the hst’s…
Have you ever made a jelly roll race with triangles a solid color at the joins??? I love a fun jrr… I’d like to just see how that works ;)
Thank you. I’ll pass along your kind words to Toby. I have not done the triangle joins but that sounds interesting.
Thank you, I need the fat quarter pattern for all the Christmas and Halloween fat quarters I ended up with.
Oh I'm so glad! It's a fun one to make and a great way to showcase cute novelty prints! Thanks for watching!
I need to see a good pic of those lyrics because THAT IS AWESOME! Must do that. This just shows that the pattern doesn't have to be crazy difficult for you to get fantastic results. You're my favorite super hero.
Oh Holly, flattery will get you everywhere! 😋. I’ll see if I can get decent photos with my good camera soon. Thanks so much!
I have used the Crazy Eights by Bits ‘N Pieces. I’ve made a baby boy had girl quilt simultaneously. My daughter loved her sons so much that she asked for one for her (bigger of course). Thank you for this video, as it gave me more go-tos for a quick quilt.
Thanks for sharing!! I’ll check that out. Thank you for watching.
The Star Bright quilt from Swim Bike Quilt is awesome! It’s a very modern quilt with big blocks, so quick to make. Last time I looked it was free if you subscribe to their newsletter.
Awesome. Thanks for sharing I’ll definitely check it out.
You’ve really inspired me! Thank you!
♥️
Found you while clicking around UA-cam tonight and you have SO inspired me! Love them all and am planning on gathering my scraps to start some fun quilts! Thank you and Happy Holidays!
Welcome!! I’m glad you enjoyed it! Thank you so much!
I'm not a fan of making many patterns more than once but I've made this one a couple times now. It's a 3-yard quilt "Sew Quick" I love how fast it comes together and is only 3 yards for the top.
The 3-yard quilts are really great and I love that they have options and directions for making larger sizes as well. Thanks for sharing!
Your quilt holder is the best!!
Thank You!
I’m “extra”too. I loved this video. You are a delight. Everything in the scene is intriguing as well as your cool assistant.😆 I’m definitely becoming a subscriber. I’m new to quilting and I love it. Thank you.
Wow, thank you!
I make big half square triangles and combine them Willy nilly
That sounds like tremendous fun. Thanks for sharing.
St Louis 16 patch is my all time favorite quick, easy and beginner favorite quilt no matter the age of the recipient.
Enjoyed seeing all of these ideas and saved a few to my OneNote program for reference.
Thanks bunches.
I’ll have to look that one up - sounds interesting. So glad you enjoyed the video. Thank you for watching and sharing.
Beautiful quilts. I also love LG scale prints. Fabrics today are so bright, Beautiful, and so well made. I'm a new quilter but my go to is the race quilts only because they are quick and fun to make.
They ARE fun to make and I love a quilt that shows off beautiful fabric. Thanks for watching.
Terrific eye for picking fabrics! Just beautiful. The checkerboard is my winner in all this!!
Thank you
Thanks for this video. Most of us don’t think about about the ‘what ifs’. A very good idea to have predetermined a few patterns that are simple to make and fast, when you need simple and fast!!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching.
hello from Qaqortoq Greenland. Enjoyed your video!!
Hello there! Thanks for watching!
How do I see the ‘clip’ of your sister-in-law’s reaction please?
Oh I’m sorry, I was a bit unclear. I don’t have video of that as she asked me not to film (she’d had a travel day that started at 4 am). But I can add a link to her instagram post into the description box. Thanks for asking because it totally should have done that.
All of your quick quilts were fantastic---love your sense of color. Thanks for sharing how you make them yours! The sister in law quilt was a standout. Love a surprise in a quilt!
Oh thank you!
Quilts are delightful! Bold and confident color/print combinations. Love the light blue HST one.
Thanks so much!
Great helper.
Thanks 😉
Three Yard Quilts are my go-to quilts.
Thanks for sharing - those are great.
Have you ever tried to make a bargello quilt using a panel?
I have not tried that but I’ve seen some beautiful quilts using the technique. Thanks for watching.
My quick go to pattern is the disappearing scrappy 9 patch
Always great fun!
my favorite is the disappearing nine patch no seams to match
Always a good solution!
Disappearing 9 patch with 6in blocks
A great go to!!
Thanks this is great! You’re very sweet!
Thank you!
I like HST and jelly roll race for a quick quilt.
Always good choices!
Love your channel, subscribed!
Awesome! Thank you!
Just started to make a quilt what is a jelly roll 😊
A jelly roll is a group of 40-42 strips from a single fabric collection. They are 2.5” wide. They usually come all rolled up like the ones I show in the video. Thank you so much for watching.
My arthritis neeeeeeds Accuquilt strip cutters
I know exactly what you mean. I love when technology makes it possible for us to continue doing what we love! Thank you for sharing and for watching.
What is your go to size for a gifted quilt? My planned quilt would be full or queen. But they take A lot of time!
Oh good question. If it’s not a baby quilt - which I usually make rather generous - I make a throw size or for tall folks twin-ish.
Thank you
Turn and flip and 2 rows of large flying geese
Great idea. Thank you!
What an awesome quilt show! Thank you for starting my morning off perfectly. I just added a few more to my list. My go to is Yellow Brick Road. I sat down one day and made a chart for all the cut pieces so I can go super scrappy if I want. Happy Quilting!!
Oh no now I have another to try! 😜. Thanks for your kind words I am glad you enjoyed the video.
4:51 shows and starts video for quilt.😢
Thanks for that. I haven’t learned how to do timestamps yet.
Wish i had access to a long arm, i only quilt as you go
Quilt as you go is a wonderful technique, I'm glad it makes quilting possible for you. Thank you so much for watching and sharing.
Your assistant is the best! Lol
Thanks. I think so too 😊
I like to do the St Louis sixteen patch with 2.5 inch strips that are about 22 inches long. Fast and easy when strip piecing. My son is named Tobi too.
Awesome! The quilt sounds very cool and Tobys unite (mine it TobY) 😊. Thanks for sharing!
@@amydement. There aren't many Tobi(y)s in this world, they are always good dudes though. I just discovered your channel through your video about Scrap quilts get a unified look, I was hooked after one video and watched like 10 more and have subscribed. Thanks for the great quilty content and advice. I look forward to new videos and watching more of the past videos. ❤
Oh thank you so much!
Deconstructed 9 patch recut and spun into a four patch is super easy and it looks more complex. I also favor half log cabins.
Fun. I’ve just been eying half and 1/4 log cabins with some ideas brewing. I have lots of leftover blocks parts to use as the centers. Thanks for the reminder and thank you for watching and sharing.
I meant disappearing nine patch of course. @@amydement. 1/4 log cabins sounds great.
👍🏻
Loved this so much just subscribed.
Yay! Thank you!
Love all of your quilts and your mobile quilt showcase system!
Thanks so much! Thank you for watching.
Hi there. I love your quilts. They’re beautiful. I like the rail fence pattern for a quick quilt. Your slide show presenter was great. 😊
Thank you so much! He’s quite a good kid.
“French Vanilla” from Its Sew Emma. I’m able to leave some themed feature fabric in slightly larger pieces. And it goes together really well, I modified for the size I wanted the first time I made it. Try a black background instead of white, looks great.
Oh yes! I just made 3 of those for some nephews. I used baseball team fabric for the main print. My only drawback with that one is having to match sashing rows. But it is really fun and works up quickly! Thanks for sharing.
What is the quilt behind you?
It’s a patterns I made up for a specific show. I talk about it in detail in the “Is it Art?” Video. Thanks for watching.
Great and V . Informative and Inspiring video. Thanks
Oh! and thanks to your assistant!
😊♥️
Thank you sliding quilt system. That's great that they're willing to help you show us your talents. I'm new to quilting and getting ready to make my husband a quilt of valor quilt. I see the affects war had on him every night when he sleeps. It's also his birthday in 2 days. So I'm hoping to have it done and hope it comforts him in some way when he has those nightmares.
That’s such a special quilt!! I’m sure your love will wrap him in comfort. 😊
Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Love all your fast and easy quilts. You have a charming assistant too ♥️💜🧡
Thank you so much! I think he’s pretty awesome!
Pat Sloan's All My Stars is my go to. Love your sweet sliding quilt displayed!🩷
Thanks and that’s a great pattern!
I just look for a pattern that "speaks" to me
I love this. That’s one of the best tips I’ve heard and I give to new quilters. Find a pattern that lights a fire in you and it will keep you going! Thank you for watching and sharing.
I used to really struggle with this. Now what I do is keep a wish list. Sometimes I download the pattern (esp if free) and keep it in a folder on my computer. The thing I STOPPED doing was buying the fabric or kit. To me it was tremendous pressure (and expense) and I had to remind myself that there will always be fabric when I’m ready and often something I like more. There is always more fabric. The best advice I have is to let that initial ‘flutter of excitement’ fade - wait it out and work on what you already love. Let yourself off the hook - it’s an imperfect process 😊
My “Go-to” pattern is 5” squares from my stash, alternating prints and solids (or anything that reads solid)…add a border to increase size, reduce number of squares to make smaller. To fancy up, use low volume squares to make a pattern within the colored squares. I am enjoying your videos very much!
Thank you. That method sounds like a real winner!
Love love love 😂
Thank You
Thank you Toby!
I'll pass that along! ;-)
Rag quilts! Fast, eady scrap busters for sure.
No technical issues with your slide show Ty!
Great son
Yes he is. Thank you!
Great video,, I'm loving your channel! My go to is Jordan Fabrics "Carpenter's Wheel". It checks all the boxes. Free pattern download, huge visual impact, only uses large over sized HST`s (think 9 inches or bigger), adjustable (just change the size of your HST's). I can literally finish the top in a single day!
That sounds perfect I'll check it out! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for sharing all these EXTRA beautiful quilts!
You are so welcome! Thank YOU for watching!
Good job by your son! I have a couple handy quilt holders too. Hubby is 6 foot 2 and has a big wingspan. Son is only a bit shorter and has long arms too. Excellent jelly roll quilt, but I like all your projects.
Thanks so much!
Go Toby! You did a great job!
Amy, I don't have a "quick quilt" go-to pattern because I don't quilt in a hurry anymore. But, those strip quilts are so quick and easy while still looking good.
A framed (sashed) nine-patch works well also for quick. (I sew strip sets of three, then cut them across to make the nine patch- I showed it in my Nesting Seams video) The sashing saves time so that you have fewer seams to match up when joining blocks.
LOL.....sometimes I am "extra" too.
Yes! Your art quilts are the MOST - just like you 😊.
