BMW Top Box - 49L - "Old style" On a New RT

  • This is the old style top box that BMW sold as an accessory for the K1200GT, K1300GT, and the previous generation R1200RT. Thankfully BMW has not changed the luggage racks on their big tourers, so therefore this box still fits just fine on the new 2016 R1200RT.
    If you have a new style RT, your dealer will most likely suggest a new style box (like the one on my K1600) , but this older version is much less expensive, is lighter, much easier to put on and take off and has the same capacity. Also, since these are not big movers like the new boxes, your dealer may have old stock that they would be willing to sell at a discount.
    I also included the keying of the box, since this is a pain for some -- but really this is easy and quick. Taking an old cylinder out of this box is an exercise in frustration, but it can be done.

    I have a K1600 GT that came with this style box and I love it.
    When traveling, it is so nice just to turn the key to pop the handle, lift it off, and carry it into the room.
    This one also seems to be a lot more steady than the K1600 GTL factory case.

    BMW has another top box which is refrigerated for your adult beverages. It has a solar panel on top of the box to generate the needed electricity. You should check it out.

    I have an ‘18 RT and bought this box and key cylinder. I figured, for the $700 savings I could lock it myself and I very definitely prefer to have the ability to easily remove the top box.

    Brilliant, Chris. I'm box shopping this morning for my new to me 2018 RT and of course, it's boxless at this point. I don't necessarily need one but my GF demands one due to the backrest feature and her wide assortment of traveling hair dryers, curling irons, and makeup mirror. You just made my ebay search a hell of a lot easier. Thanks much.

    Regarding inner bags though, ever since I tried them back in 2009 & realized how tidier things can be, specially with larger boxes that can accommodate more stuff, they've become for me a standard accessory with any motorcycle purchase.

    I have used both boxes and I think the old one is a bit bigger inside. Case in point; with the "classic" case, I could place the helmet upright on one side of the case. With the new one, the helmet would need to be placed on its side for the lid to close properly. Thus, taking up a little more room.

    I followed this video and it was perfect. Pay close attention to the added screen shot wording where he writes the message about the 7th tumbler. I messed this up because I wasn’t clear in which end to count from. If you mess this part up your key will be stuck in the lock and you’ll be sad. His directions are clear but a better warning about this one critical step would have helped. I ended up having to remove the guts of my box 5 times to remove the key barrel and line all the closing and locking racks. Very frustrating

    interesting that you're back to an RT. I love my 2014 after 5 years on a GoldWing. I loved the wing, but the RT isn't as bulky, handles better and is a joy to ride. A great touring bike with some pizzaz.

    • @kiki231000
      @kiki231000  8 років тому

      +Michael Kallelis You are correct. Having ridden an RT hard through the mountains i really developed an appreciation for a well balanced tourer. I think if i did less back road riding i would stick with the K16, but since my riding is more varied, and i typically flip bikes every 3 years, i wanted to try the new design RT. The K16 handles curves just fine, its just a little more work.
      The Wing riders i meet who flip to BMW's are varied, but , like you, are very clear on what they want.

      Well, the RT has been good so far. My only complaint has been the odd tire wear on the Metzler's. After 7,000 miles I'm changing to the Michelin's. I'm riding the RT from Seattle to Boston this year (4,000 miles) and I'll get a good feeling if this is my forever bike or not. Keep up the videos!

    My desire is to purchase a sport tourer, but right now, money is tough, and unemployment is looming. However, I did find a very nice, low mileage 2006 K1200GT. I can only hope that after getting back to work, I'll be able to afford it.
    Anyway, I was thinking that I'd like a top case to go along with that bike, and looking around, I went to Shad's site. Apparently, Shad makes the top boxes for BMW! So, while it won't have the BMW logo on it, you could get a very nice case, up to 50L in size, that should mount directly to that rack on both the older bikes, and the new RTs. Plus, for the 50L Shad box, AdMore also has a very nice lighting kit for running lights, turn signals and braking lights, all for less than the cost of a new BMW top box!
    I just hope I can find the money to get the bike. :p

      +Gary C you will be very happy with the K12. My main riding partner runs a K13GT and he adores it. The SHAD is the number one alternative choice for these bikes. I have tried GIVI and SWM as well, and although they were perfectly functional, neither had the insulated inner liner that comes with the BMW box. Good luck with your employment situation-- hope to see you on the road.

    • @kiki231000
      @kiki231000  2 роки тому

      You can access the release pin but it is very difficult. You remove the "coin screw" plastic cover beside the latch cut-out inside the bottom half . At the end of the plastic housing for the lock cylinder down in that hole is a spring loaded tab that faces down --
      however, if i recall, you will need the key to align the tumblers in order for the cylinder to come out.
      so you may be out of luck regardless.
      If that's the case, carefully drilling out the cylinder may be your only choice.

      good question. BMW recommends NOT taking it apart -- its glued and riveted (from what I can see) , and you may have difficulty putting it back together and keeping it that way. That being said-- I have never taken one apart so I really don't know.
      The recommended course of action is to remove the little coin cover inside the lip , and use a long bent pointer to release the spring retainer

    • @kiki231000
      @kiki231000  8 років тому

      +Arnold Terkel yes-- as a matter of fact this is a common problem when people attempt to re-key or remove an old cylinder. There is a short-cut that many owners have used and it apparently works very well
      ua-cam.com/video/CCJ677blYzM/v-deo.html
      I have never tried this method, but those who have swear by it. I believe the person who made the video built the tool out of a piece of hacksaw blade. But clearly it works well. Once the old cylinder is out, the rest is a piece of cake.

    I just bought this box for my 2010 1200RT. Looks great and fits perfect. The best news is I bought it online from the UK for $533 including shipping! Here is the link to the store and the box. www.bmw-motorrad-store.co.uk/bmw-top-case-49-liter-for-r1200rt-k1200gt-and-k1300gt-color-aluminium-matt.html
    Now for the bad news. Man, I wish I had watched your video 3 hours ago. I took the new box and lock down to my local locksmith to key match it to my existing key. Well, they proceeded to key it an install in the box. Now the key is stuck in the lock in the box and won't come out. :-( I'm hoping they can fix it without destroy the key or the box.

    • @kiki231000
      @kiki231000  8 років тому

      +Mark Metz it is a challenge, but you can get that out. The locksmith most likely used all the slots and didnt leave the empty slot. Normally you can get the key out, and then use the pick tool
      ua-cam.com/video/CCJ677blYzM/v-deo.html
      Since the key is stuck, you will need to have a long drink of cool water, and attach a piece of wire to a long thin screwdriver and go into the case through the little twist cover in the video. Its challenging, but you can release the retainer this way by inserting this wire in through the hole on the side of the cylinder (the hole closest to the back of the bike).

      +kiki231000 Thanks for the info. After several hours they managed to get it out and fixed. The key looks a little worse for the wear but still works on all the locks on the bike. Great video! I recently purchased the deluxe, powered topcase from KFM in Germany, only to realize the power socket wouldn't fit my wiring harness (since I didn't have central locking). Oh well, the entire box, plus the extra brake light only cost me $1050, as compared to $1600 at dealer. One problem, is the dealer added a lock cylinder for me, but it won't turn. They claim it has something to do with it being designed for central locking, but I think they just keyed it wrong. After watching, I'm guessing they put something in slot 7.
