    While I'm a homeowner and don't live in the city, I am a landlord and do have a concern about storing these inside. I pretty much trust the PEV's, I don't trust the owners will 100% maintain the batteries properly. Most of these fires happen due to under or over charging them, so it's the human element where my distrust stems from.
    With that said, I do like the idea of dedicated safe and secure fire protected storage for areas like yours. The only problem is space is at a premium in the city, and that means $ someone will have to pay for.

      Hey SS Offshore, thanks for chiming in. As a person whose worked in the real estate development industry and worked on several property management projects in the past, I totally understand. It’s hard to trust some tenants with proper maintenance of fridge let alone trusting them with a scooter lol.
      I mean, that type of work should be covered by the capital reserves of the building and considered an investment for them to help increase property value. As these become more popular in the future, they have to think ahead and change with the times 👊🏼👊🏼👊🏼

      @@Vmaxfodder Most of these scooters and many PEV's in general do not have (easily) removable batteries. Most fires are typically from over charging or battery voltage getting too low, basically BMS failures or user error.

    Came here from your other video and it didn't age well with the Lower East Side Ebike shop fire. Strangely enough I'm the only one at my job that actually uses and E-Scooter / Ebike to get to work so upper management after the recent fire so close to our HQs building was going to ban me from storing my PEVs at our office buildings. Strangely enough a lot of people are fear driven and they just run with whatever bullet points or gossip they hear. One of my biggest counter arguments to this was when you look at electronics do you have this irrational fear. Most people don't even know that their cell phones and the company laptops they abuse also have lithium ion batteries just like PEVs(I showed them one of the tagged decade old laptop marked for disposal with an expanded battery that had warped the casing and then a video of a laptop lith ion battery exploding), I also asked management if they were afraid about the Tesla's with Lith Ion batteries 10x the size of my scooter charging in their garages. Once you start to put into perspective that Lith Ion batteries are just a part of many aspects of your daily life people start to understand. And its good to see that the community acknowledges that its the battery abuse and jerry rigging of cheap batteries, power mods, and controllers that are ultimately causing these fires. In the end I was able to get them to back down but they have banned me from charging any PEVs are work which to me seems like a fair compromise if it will make them feel better. I just don't want to have to lock my PEVs on the street and risk people touching / stealing it I can responsibly charge my stuff at home.

      Thanks for chiming in. I definitely need to stop talking about it because every time I say things like "wow its been great" there's another damn fire... I've definitely have those counter arguments in my presentation that I have prepared for my building. The only other things that I added to the list were sources of fire that are a bigger issue in NYC than PEV's (which seem to be getting alot of press compared to the thousands of fires related to things like smoking in the apartments and poorly made space heaters). The timing of the media coverage is just too convenient with the plan to release congestion pricing in the city lol. I told them "If you really want to talk about safety and protection from fires, I'd like you to work on all these other possible fire sources that are currently allowed in our building."

  • @DT-Nicky

    I really hope you succeed in this and make the entire city both aware of this and the solutions for this. Many individuals will want micro mobility to be banned for arbitrary reasons, but it's not because of fires it's also because of outside influence by auto manufacturers and those who support them in the light and from the shadows.
    The messed up fact is that, during the horse drawn wagons and personal horse, anyone could walk in the streets with no issues and cross wherever they like. Then during the start of the car age if you did that you get either finned or arrested for Jaywalking. Big car businesses lobbied for this to be a law. Now at present we as riders face a similar fate because we are encroaching on their territory. Car manufacturers are feeling the squeeze, from the generations X thru present not purchasing cars and using alternative methods for commuting.
    Making batteries safer is a good start, but in a city like New York, micro mobility, bikes, public transportation and limited taxi services would really revive Manhattan. Cars require way too much infrastructure just to maintain the vehicle, while scooters and bike require very little. Not to mention that E-Bike and E-Scooters are cheaper to purchase and maintain than a car.
    Education is key overall but because of how many individuals have been programed into believing what they are told, we may have an issue.
    Also, for the Karen's who want to ban alternative methods of transportation hold on to that stupidity, because when fossil fuels runs out don't ask us for help, don't get a micro mobility device. Just haul that 3 to 7 thousand pound vehicle to the junk yard and walk. Don't treat us like the bad guys and gals because we're making our situation work. Blame yourselves for not acting like a human being.

It’s funny because the same group of people keep pushing their agenda on us regardless of topic. These same people are the same people that keep telling me, “use a real form of transportation like we used to” or “if you don’t like it then get out of the building”… Its a shame that people like that exist.

    Hi Ivan. Thanks for making this video. I live in the Seattle area in WA state and as far as I know, the issues with PEV fires in homes/apartments hasn't become an issue that's been raised to the local public spotlight yet. For all of us PEV riders that live in urban areas, we're closely watching how the situation in NYC develops when it comes to dealing with PEV lifestyle. I hope that your board takes the time to carefully considers the situation and doesn't make a knee jerk decision to ban PEVs. I enjoy following your channel and hope things go in your favor.

    • @eyebahnrides
      @eyebahnrides  Рік тому +1

      Hey Noel, thanks for watching the video and welcome to the channel. That's one of the reasons, that I really wanted to make this video. It's an uncomfortable topic but it needs to be discussed because the whole PEV community is anxiously watching to see how NYC responds to the fires. There's plenty of videos out there playing off of the "battery fire algorithm hype" that just summarizes whats going on along side videos explaining why battery fires happen. If I were to recycle the content, I feel like I wouldn't be adding anything of value to the conversation. So I decided to share my struggles as a PEV user and share how I'm trying to prevent my building from banning it. If it works, I hope that the community could just duplicate my method to fight for their right to own a PEV!
      Thank you for your words of encouragement and thank you for your support. I hope that I'll be making a video soon where I'm celebrating a win against the AntiPEV folks in the near future!

    What's up Ivan and hope that all is well. A couple of things in my opinions that you can do.
    1. Give them the suggestion of having the people who are PEV owners, Give the management and landlord the information printed on the specifications of the PEV stating UL listings or other listings verifying that these vehicles are legit.
    2. If they agree to build a container within the garage, make sure that they compartmentalize small spaces seperating each PEV.
    3.FDNY specs and inspectors approvals at the cost of the owners of course.
    4.FireSacks are good for ebikes not escooters. I am actually working on trying to build something where a scooter can be stored. I will keep you updated bro and good luck. Maybe we can exchange info if you like.

      Hey Domingo, thanks for watching and thank you for chiming in. That’s what I’m looking to do with the building with the registration. It’ll help us weed out the poorly built stuff that’s dangerous. The only thing that worries me about things like that is it might lead to discrimination issues where someone will feel like we’re discriminating based on what they can afford.
      That makes sense about the garage container. I’m curious to see what you’re thinking of for the scooter. Hit me up on IG. I know firesak just made an xxl one for scooters/ large EUCs but options are always welcome!

      @Eyebahn Rides always bro and if I may say, discrimination should be pushed to the side for them as not everyone can afford things that others can. All that needs to be done is to educate them, show them that banning this without knowing on the chemistry and backgrounds could lead lawsuits that may stem from it (not from you but the owners) This is a hard situation as the same is happening to me with my place of employment as well as my building. My project will take some time but it's a project in place. Going to see if I can get some sponsors from the city, fdny and maybe the people who make the lithium fire extinguishers. I don’t under why landlords and Karen’s think one can just toss a multi thousand dollar PEV away. Never seen this much lack of empathy towards PEV owners. Car crashes cause so much more death and destruction, where’s the same energy towards cars?
    What the city should do is buy (same $ amount as it cost to buy it) back PEVS in buildings where they are banned in a worst case scenario where the building is totally suborn and bans it all. For a city that preaches about equality and fairness for all, it’s ironic how low income PEV owners are also being screwed over.
    I once talked to a guy who works in Long Island from the Bronx and the most affordable way to get to his job site is via escooter and subway. The alternatives would cost him a ton more money.

    • @eyebahnrides
      @eyebahnrides  Рік тому +2

      Exactly, there are so many other things that are statistically more dangerous. For example, those old space heaters that burn down tons of homes a year…I’m not even going into vehicles killing pedestrians and PEV riders.
      I agree If the landlords want to ban it so bad despite them being legal. The city should find a way to compensate us. Where are they gonna find enough room to throw all these PEVs away? Lol they can’t run it over because it’s gonna explode 😂

No, but, notice now, they are targeting stoves with gas that it may cause carbon monoxide poisoning but no where can they see that explosions have occurred due to stoves being left on as well? If you think about it, everything we own has a volatile state and condition. All people need is education on how to use things and explain to people that cheap batteries are dangerous. Also, offer a battery trade in program like they do with gun trade in programs. Offer people money or another battery replacement, even another electric vehicle replacement that meets the standards of UL listings and other certified groups. Smh...

      Thanks for watching the video and welcome to the channel. Unfortunately, there's no "universal template" that we can use to contact the management. When crafting your email, I would suggest telling them that you're aware of what's going on and offer to be part of the solution. Come up with ideas that your specific building would find useful. However, don't offer help if you don't plan on actually helping lol. That would only make things worse for you and everyone in your building.
      Before I approached my building, I did my research and built my presentation around my findings. When the meeting comes up, I'll be offering information on sources of fire that we need to be more worried about and also offering solutions for PEV storage that can be implemented in my building.
      I hope these examples/guideline help with your email/ presentation with your management company.

    Are they dangerous? Sure. Do they need to be banned? No. Solutions are definitely out there and these types of vehicles are becoming popular so safety and solutions should start to become readily available. We have 6 electric scooters in my house, and 3 hover boards. They are properly used, charged, and stored and we have had no issues to date. Anything could fail at any moment and it be nothing other than a freak accident. I hope you get a good resolution with your building. For my family, our scooters are not so much a vehicle as it is just entertainment. I couldn't imagine paying for one of these as a daily commuter and then told you couldn't use it anymore.

      For those of us that use PEVs as our primary commuter, we’re extremely frustrated by the situation in NYC. You could literally purchase one at Best Buy for thousands of dollars because it’s legal, only to be told by your landlord/ neighbors that you have to get rid of it or figure out where you’re going to store it 🥲.

    Anything with either unbranded cells, or a brand of PEV that doesn’t come from a reputable factory makes me uneasy. That being said, it’s been my observation that a lack of education is what leads to most fires. Every battery fire I’ve heard of in my city has been due to misuse, incompatible chargers, or unqualified modifying of the packs.

    • @eyebahnrides
      @eyebahnrides  Рік тому +1

      Hey Connor, thanks for watching this video as well and thank you for putting up some great points. One of the key things that I plan to bring up during my presentation to my building is using the registration process to educate the owner of the PEV on the best practices for their PEV. We could even let them know that they bought something shady and hopefully they can exchange it for something else. Unfortunately, we as a building, can't assume that a person buying products like these have properly done their homework. After registration and an information session, we would proceed to give them informational packets that they have to review.
      The sad thing here is, if the folks that are so pro banning PEVs would just pay attention to the information the news is giving them instead of the fear they're trying to create, they would see exactly what you brought up. All of it involves poorly made products malfunctioning due to lack of education, misuse, and unqualified modification/ repairs.

I believe both will be great for riders looking to take that next step in performance and comfort. It's going to depend on a few things.
      If you have the space for storage, don't have to carry it around at all, NEED the top speed because of the roads around you, and are ok riding around on something massive, you'll enjoy the Burn E. It the most comfortable scooter I've ever ridden and delivers one of the best packages for those with space.
      If you need the smaller footprint, need to lift the scooter, are ok with 40 mph, and looking for something that is more maneuverable, I would go Klima / Klima max. I think this is a better scooter for city riding and urban commuters.
      I hope this helps and keep an eye out for Friday's video!

    It’s not the consumers responsibility it the manufacturers responsible to make good products. When the samsung galaxy was catching fire did they ban cell phones? No samsung fixed it. To ban ev means you have to ban everything with rechargeable batteries which doesn’t make sense

    • @eyebahnrides
      @eyebahnrides  Рік тому

      Thanks for watching and welcome to the channel! You’re absolutely correct that the manufacturers have to be better and it’s good to see some of them are trying. The only problem is there are so many of these terrible companies making s💩t knockoff low quality products and selling it for a low price. For some folks they have no choice but to go with that because the well made ones are so stupidly expensive. That’s why I’m happy to hear NYC actually pushing these gig companies, that make millions off the back their deliveristas, to help subsidize the cost of repairs for their gig workers.
      I agree. In my presentation to my building Im planning on mentioning a ban on rechargeable batteries affect the very people asking for it because their elderly electric mobility scooters are powered by the same thing. Also, there are more dangerous things like smoking and space heaters that we should be focused on. One of the other apartments literally had a small fire the other day because someone left their space heater on for so long that it melted itself in into the outlet and burned the wall… thank god that person was ok.

  • @katon4525

    I think a great solution is for the city to make an effort to build bike garages! Some of these EV's are pretty heavy and most buildings don't have elevators/ elevators are always broken. Since EV's are here to stay more people are buying 2 or more personal ev's and storing it in the apartment. Which I have no issues with other's storing their property in their apartment but at the same time some of these guys do not understand that they cannot leave the batteries charged overnight.
    There needs to be more education surrounding battery care and storing in order for most people to have a piece of mind. Lot's of people have a hard time following the law so it's understandable that people don't trust other's with ev batteries. More education on this the more people will understand that many factors can cause these fires. I think public garages to store/charge ev's is great for those heavy ev's but also maybe more of a piece of mind.

    • @eyebahnrides
      @eyebahnrides  Рік тому

      Thanks for watching Katon! I agree that both public storage and education would really help us out. I’m not sure how they could implement it but the system they have in Tokyo for bike storage would be an interesting solution. However, this is NYC so I assume it’s gonna cost a ton because of the red tape and the extra security needed because people are always gonna try and steal your stuff.
      I’m glad to see FDNY taking steps to educate people but the city really has to take more aggressive measures. As for the dangers of working on it yourself, the city needs to force the Delivery Companies making millions off the backs of the Deliveristas should help subsidize the cost of repairs for them so they don’t have to risk their lives so they can fix what they use to make money 👊🏼

Under NYC there's over 100 miles (160km) of steam pipes that deliver steam to almost 2000 buildings in the city. ConEdison (the power company) puts up those stacks or chimneys if there are leaks.
