I am in zone 6B/7 lower Hudson Valley, New York. I can’t grow a number of the things that you can, but this has been a fascinating discussion and really all of the principles are applicable no matter where you are gardening. Thanks for a great video.

Thanks for the recommendations. Plants are cheap unless you are an addict!

I tend to plant too close together and end up smothering or crowding plants I’ve spent good money on. You mention perennial geraniums. I’ve bought many but they don’t survive. I’ve bought Rozanne several times, planted in shade and sun; it suffers or is leggy regardless. One thing I’d like to hear more about are short-lived perennials - are there plants that just naturally peter out after a while. Knowing what those are helps manage expectations.

I've given up on every cultivar too. My native Geranium is a better performer in my beds around the porch and large Oak trees. They certainly don't flower all summer but their foliage is nice all season and they self sow only a bit.

Great comment. I’ve wasted more 💵 on heucheras and cone flowers than I care to mention because I fell in love with a great color on a very poor performing plant. Fairly certain Rozanne was a plant award too and it’s a horrible long term performer

Mark I agree crocosmia is a pain . Recently i resisted the urge for more crocosmia and planted spigelia. I absolutely love the flower color and shape and it doesn’t look like crap in July 😂

Instead of the regular akebia, why not plant the variegated leaf version? Won’t that be less aggressive?

Mark I’ve stumbled upon this way to keep rabbits away from lilies. As my drift roses and baptisia have expanded they gave grown over where lilies are planted the rabbits aren’t touching them but the ones that were beyond the coverage are longer with us.

I thought Gloriosa Lily was very poisonous!

There's a lot of plants that are poisonous...just don't eat them. You're not going to die just by looking at it. Relax, there's more important things to worry about.

If you had listened carefully to Mark's comment on Gloriosa being edible. They are not safe at all to eat.

Yes, Gloriosa superba is poisonous and you shouldn't eat it. Mark was confounding Lillium spp. (true lillies) which are very edible, and Gloriosa superba (Gloriosa lillies) which are not. We've updated the video and removed the erroneous comment. Don't eat Gloriosa lillies!
