MASH swiped not just from McHales Navy but from F-Troop. There was one episode with Frank in command, they did the whole F-Troop line up for morning assembly deal, Radar playing the bugle badly like Dobbs, etc etc. Sure enough in the credits(I forgot if it was the director or a writer, but am 80%
sure it was the director)there was an F-Troop alum.

I believe, during the Korean War, there really was a "Washing Machine Charlie(s)". It was a Russian Po-2 biplane flown only at night on "harassment" missions. The goal was to deny a restful sleep for the allies. During WWII the Germans called them "Night Witches" because they were flown by women pilots. Because they could use any flat surface for a landing field, they operated close to the front lines, flew for a short time and distance, dropped their small payload, then disappeared. They were very difficult to counter.

I do believe there is some truth to that. There were some NVA assisting the Chinese in let us say other opportunistic operations and those other military folks dedicated themselves to bombing & strafing USA forces most evenings. There is a recorded record of a Washington Machine Charlie stated as being someone employed by or inspired by home ruled Japanese forces having holding thee really old obsolete planes. They talked mostly civilians into flying those night time harassment missions which actually were made up of older Japanese Russian pilots and a few brave Japanese women. However that enigma Called Washing Machine Charlie was a real WWII Jap pilot. The docs were released to some early truthers.... That is documented. Where the records R who the hell knows... But there were actual Japanese harassment squadrons made up of planes not even suited 4 bombardment. The inspiration was to disrupt ppl and or not let our USA troops rest. There R several British intelligence agencies that have also confirmed the same stories. Aussie forces occupied Manila Island in late 1945. They also stated the same stories. Old aintique aircraft flew in low under most radar. Some were piloted by older Japaense women children & men & these unique non military folks hand dropped exploding garbage ordnance. I site March 19th 1944 Cebu City Philippines a low flying unarmed aircraft of unknown MFG flew within ground battery range and was promptly shot down. In the bay a woman emerged from the wreckage of the aircraft.

John Wright starring as Willy Moss, is holding what appears to be a German Luger(P08).
    This is period correct.
The Japanese Nambu had a NOTORIOUS reputation as a SH1TTY handgun, so the Japanese military allowed officers to purchase their own sidearms.
Many Japanese officers during the war bought German handguns.

Yes and no... Actually the first raider plane to get nicknamed Washing machine Charlie was a flying boat, that never made a serious run on the base. Once the disturbance as known to cause some havoc. The Japanese would run any noisy aircraft over islands known to be held by the allies just to cause disturbance. The twin engined night fighters could disrupt bombing activity and carry a payload.
