    Special thanks to Anjali, our volunteer reporter from New Delhi. So are you going to start reporting about what's happening in Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Eastern Russia as well? The continent of Asia is massive and contains a multitude of distinct cultures, that is, its a (Western) geographical construct which doesn't reflect the diverse and distinct societal, cultural, or economic groups within Asia itself. Something to consider before extending your coverage.

    It's impressive that most of these Indians can actually see and acknowledge what is happening in their countries. I saw so many people who don't even want to talk about the "bad part" of their countries because they think its shameful thing. But first step for fixing problem is acknowledging there is one. Good job Indians!

      sam water All of the Chinese in the video accept that pollution is bad, but it's a consequence of development. Why is that wrong? Have you seen photos and videos of London, Tokyo, New York, and LA as recent as the 1980s? China has developed industry and has to suffer with the resulting pollution. Using the industry and manufacturing capabilities they acquired, they can begin to clean up. India has little industrial capacity and yet still suffer from the same thing. India's only going to get worse while China's gonna get better in the next decade.

      The smog in Toronto is not nearly as bad as it was during the 1970's 1980's. It used to be that you could barely see the buildings downtown from Q beach. That and you definitely wouldn't want to even wade in the lake. Things have gotten much better over the years, but that is in large part due to most of the manufacturing jobs going over seas and tighter rules on set on what factories have to do to treat the pollution they release into the air.

    It is very interesting that the Indians know so much about the pollution and how well informed about it they are. Also, a majority of Indians are fluent in Hindi & in English because they are taught it in school which is why you can just walk up to them and ask these questions in English.

      Majority of Indians aren't fluent in Hindi and English though. Urban India is English friendly.. As for Hindi.. @FZ Channel No, I have an Indian friend whose dad grew up in a small village in Kolkata in the 70s and was taught English in school from a young age, and despite not actively practicing it among his friends (they spoke in Bengali amongst one another and at home the vast majority of the time), he still became fluent in English (although still retaining the accent and some pronunciation discrepancies). Through sheer hard work and education, he made it out of that vikkage and to America, and he wouldnt have survived here without his English

  • @CO-iz7wp
    @CO-iz7wp 6 років тому +193

    One thing I really admire about Indians and their culture is they understand the need to be well informed, and it's reflected here. I mean, they may not have all the facts(in fact, unless it's their area of expertise, they most certainly would not), but they work with the information they've been exposed to and try to think practically. I liked how even those that seemed to think that much of the problem was due to crop burning, gave concession to the farmers that they hadn't been educated on, or did not have the facilities available to use alternative methods, and seemed to feel that this needed to be addressed instead of simply just blaming the farmers. It's so refreshing to see this kind of discussion. And for the sake of the Indian people and their environment, I hope the government really does act on this.

    • @ThatGlobalDesi
      @ThatGlobalDesi 6 років тому +5

      Thank you for such an insightful comment. I feel our education system is quite fucked as it is in terms of providing quality learning so Indians tend to take it upon themselves to read, stock up on knowledge, and be as well informed as possible. This was a surprise that even I got when I moved back to India after growing up in the States.

    You can see the stark difference between Indian and Chinese response. Though the pollution may be same but the answers are so different. While Indians have no problem in acknowledging the pollution Chinese always gives excuses and deny in many instances. The difference is probably due to freedom of speech in India while in China speaking like these Indians could land them in prisons as such statement can be interpreted as anti-national.

      You shouldn't draw too many conclusions from message boards like this one. It has become very clear over the past 4-6 years that certain countries (China and Russia) invest quite a lot in provoking hate, dissent and disinformation by using bots and trolls on major internet platforms and social media sites. This includes UA-cam.
      Of course there is racism in the world against Indians. It isn't all bots. But China is very busy trying to assert dominance over India in all sorts of ways right now and that includes causing all kinds of dissent online. Keep the citizens distracted and they won't pressure their government to act externally against external threats. That's the strategy.
      Every Indian should be talking about THIS - not petty things like childish racist comments made online. (That includes childish comments like the anti-British one made above. Anyone (real or bot, real Indian or fake) still complaining about Britain in 2021 is a worthless distraction. The same goes for anti-Indian comments, sexist comments, etc etc...)
      - Spread the word - The democratic, free world needs a strong India.

    Major reasons for air pollution in delhi ncr region are:
    1) Crop burning in agricultural areas of North India during months of October and November.
    2) Large amount of vehicles in and near the city.
    3) Industrial development to the extent of saturation.
    4) Pollutants released from constructional sites.
    5) Almost no rain during winters
    6) Since it is not a coastal area, breeze movement during winters is negligible which doesnot allow the air to circulate.

    Burning crops is definitely a big factor which leads to a severe air pollution, I don't understand why government just let all the farmers do that. Most importantly, if government stop them from doing that, the air quality would be improved a lot and it doesn't cost too much money. That's basically the most effective way to deal with air pollution atm.

    • @kumikones
      @kumikones 6 років тому +15

      Some of the people in the video actually mention the problem. The farmers will burn crops because it's convenient and necessary to their livelihood. Farmers don't have a good standard of living. They are uneducated on the issue of pollution and lack the proper support from the government to justify the tradeoff of not burning crops. It's a bit complicated.

    • @subhashischowdhury6171
      @subhashischowdhury6171 6 років тому +3

      Another politically correct comment.... Pls collect some data about pollution from crop burning, it's effect on air pollution, and collect data of industrial air pollution around metro cities. And also collect data on air pollution by local administration by burning municipal waste just to reduce it's size and few bucks. Do some basic research and you will see that those middle class, poor Farmers are just a decoy to the real problem. You need appropriate infrastructure to reduce industrial air pollution and it cost money to keep that infrastructure running. That's where politicians hold hands with Industrialists. Big donations to party funds, and bla bla bla are very common. Oh sorry this is propaganda don't believe in this. Farmers are the main culprit. Put those uneducated bastards in jail.

    I think the air pollution in India becomes cumulatively more apparent during this season because of an over 50% reliance on a fossil fuel-based energy source - coal. This occurs especially if the energy industry has not begun to apply energy efficient carbon capture/reduction technologies.
    Crop/brush burning only adds to the already precarious carbon loading.
    Like one of the interviewees said, the farmers should also be made aware of their deleterious practice. I think they could form co-operatives, through which they can purchase incinerators that meet acceptable air emissions criteria/requirements.
    We keep on saying "government"... The government "officials" can only do very little, but pass and enforce whatever policies they like. IMHO, "the people" are the government.

      I too share your concern but recent initiatives have given me hope...like government is setting a goal to replace all the diesel/petrol vehicles to electric vehicles by 2030......it has already started ,a majority of buses and taxis are being replaced by electric ones...and the government is trying to make a market for electric vehicles.....similarily you can see govt is trying to switch to solar energy very hard...recently world's second largest solar park became operational in march 2017...and the best thing is that as you can see in the video people are aware of the pollution and that makes govt do things to improve their efforts or they are criticised and voted off..

And even though we were just walking we'd be out of breathe in no time. I remember driving towards Dehli and seeing a gray cloud surround it, whilst the surrounding area had clear blue skies.

    "On Tuesday, the Indian Medical Association declared the situation a “public health emergency.” The current haze comes on top of air pollution so bad it killed 2.5 million people in India in 2015, according to an article published last month in the medical journal The Lancet - more than in any other country."
    And.
    "For Arvind Kumar, a chest surgeon for more than three decades, the situation is adding to a growing health crisis in the region. “I don’t see pink lungs even among healthy nonsmoking young people,” he said in a telephone interview on Tuesday. “The air quality has become so bad that even if you are a nonsmoker you are still suffering.”
    From the New York Times. It is a crisis that a lot of cities all over the world need to work to avoid right now. I live in Park City and we have really clean air, however, when I go to Salt Lake City from PC I can see the pollution laying atop not only the city, but the greater Salt Lake area. I really hope that governments around the world can start focusing on this issue because it effects you whether you are the one polluting or not.

    Is there any effort to increasing "green spaces" to help mitigate the pollution? If more trees were planted along streets, more green parks created in undeveloped or delapidated neighborhoods, and gardens encouraged atop all flat roofs, it might help. Another partial solution could be to begin building earth-sheltered structures with lawns overhead, which would increase the recreational or food crop-growing usability of developed property, while reducing heating and cooling outputs (thus reducing power demands), among other benefits.

    • @nvrguru22
